Justice for Kimbo – a group protests to save a dog from possible euthanasia
“We came to stand up for him,” said Kimberly Roman. “There is a rescue group out of Colorado that know the whole story, that have stepped up to the plate and are willing to take him immediately.”
SANTA FE, N.M. —
A group of supporters gathered Sunday in Santa Fe, determined to keep a 3-year-old Pyrenees dog from being euthanized.
Kimbo is currently housed at the Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Humane Society. His supporters say Kimbo is scheduled for euthanasia, in part because he nipped the hand of a person who placed their hand inside his kennel.
“We came to stand up for him,” said Kimberly Roman. “There is a rescue group out of Colorado that know the whole story, that have stepped up to the plate and are willing to take him immediately.”
Dylan Moore is the Senior Director of Santa Fe Animal Shelter Operations. He says there has been interest in Kimbo, but after hearing of his behavioral history, people eventually decided not to adopt him.
“We have had a discussion about Kimbo, and the decision was that we cannot find placement for Kimbo, and he is unsafe in the shelter, and he is suffering in our care,” Moore said. “And in that environment, humane euthanasia is the outcome for Kimbo.”
Kimbo’s supporters believe that he deserves to live. One of those supporters says that a person wanted to adopt Kimbo last week – but was told that no one could adopt him at this point.
“Kimbo is stressed out, but he’s a very kind dog,” said Maureen O’Brien.
“Is Kimbo on a euthanasia list? Kind of,” Moore said. “Is Kimbo’s euthanasia scheduled? No.”
Kimbo’s supporters disagree. They claim that Kimbo could be euthanized as soon as Monday.
“His life shouldn’t be on the line right now,” Roman said.
