Timothy Busfield attorney ‘quite upset’ with arrest warrant handling

0

The personal attorney of Timothy Busfield criticized the handling of the 68-year-old’s arrest warrant by Albuquerque authorities in a phone call with KOAT on Tuesday, saying, “I’m quite upset with how it was handled.” Busfield surrendered to authorities on Tuesday after being charged with child sex abuse, following accusations of inappropriately touching two child actors on the set of “The Cleaning Lady” in Albuquerque. He is facing two counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor and child abuse. Stein explained that after the warrant was issued, Busfield’s lawyer contacted authorities to arrange a surrender, but Busfield had to drive cross-country as he couldn’t fly. Despite requesting the warrant be pulled, a judge refused, Stein said. “As soon as he got here in Albuquerque, his local criminal lawyer walked him into the courthouse and he surrendered,” Stein added. The Albuquerque Police Department defended its actions, stating in a press conference Tuesday: “We contacted the U.S. Marshal Service just because we understood him to be out of town or living outside of the state so just asked for their assistance in locating and getting him into custody.”When asked about Busfield’s wife Melissa Gilbert, APD confirmed, “She’s not a suspect in our case.” APD said it is not currently investigating any other incidents involving Busfield. Stein commented on Busfield’s state, saying, “He’s obviously distraught over the allegations but he is clear that he wants to use the court system to prove his innocence. He denies 100% any of the allegations against him, and he’s confident that he will ultimately prevail.” KOAT legal expert John Day said both the prosecution and defense likely feel they have a good case in court, saying, “It’s going to be a battle because the defense says these are fake allegations. Prosecution says we need to believe these the two little boys and it’s going to be played out in court and it’s going to be a long, a long battle. We know that much.”When asked if more allegations could lead to additional charges, APD’s Gilbert Gallegos said, “I think it’s kind of hypothetical at this point, so it would probably not be appropriate to comment on what might happen.”APD officials mentioned they haven’t had direct contact with Busfield, who was likely communicating with the district attorney’s office. The arrest warrant also notes past sexual assault allegations against Busfield in 1994 and 2012, with no charges filed in either case.Stein said Warner Bros. investigated the misconduct claims by hiring independent investigator Christina McGovern who interviewed a dozen people on set. McGovern told KOAT: “I conducted an independent and thorough investigation of all allegations known to the Studio at the time. Warner Bros. gave me full discretion as to my investigation. Based on what was alleged, and all evidence gathered, including multiple witness statements, I found no corroborating evidence that Mr. Busfield engaged in inappropriate conduct or that he was ever alone with the on set.”

Crane falls onto moving train in Thailand, killing at least 29 in fiery derailment

0

Bangkok — A construction crane fell onto a moving passenger train, causing a fiery derailment that killed at least 22 people Wednesday in northeastern Thailand, authorities said. Another 64 people were injured and rescuers were still searching the wreckage and giving first aid.

The derailment occurred on part of an ambitious planned high-speed rail project that will eventually connect China with much of Southeast Asia.

The crane, which was being used to build an elevated part of the railway, fell as the train was traveling from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani province, according to the public relations office for Nakhon Ratchasima province, where the accident occurred some 143 miles northeast of Bangkok.

Photos published in Thai media showed plumes of white, then dark smoke above the scene and construction equipment hanging down from between two concrete support pillars.

Rescue workers stood on top of overturned railway carriages, some of them with gaping holes torn on their sides, video from public broadcaster ThaiPBS showed. What appeared to be sections of the crane were scattered along the track.

Thai media reported the train had three carriages, the last two being the most heavily damaged.

Transport Minister Piphat Ratchakitprakan said 195 people were on board the train. He said he ordered an investigation.

Area resident Mitr Intrpanya, 54, told French news agency AFP she “heard a loud noise, like something sliding down from above, followed by two explosions. When I went to see what had happened, I found the crane sitting on a passenger train with three carriages. The metal from the crane appeared to strike the middle of the second carriage, slicing it in half.”

The elevated segment that collapsed is a part of a Thai-Chinese high-speed railway project linking Bangkok, Thailand’s capital to the northeastern province of Nong Khai, bordering Laos. The two-stage rail project has a total cost of more than 520 billion baht ($16.8 billion) and is associated with an ambitious plan to connect China with Southeast Asia under Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative.

In August 2024, a railway tunnel on the planned route, also in Nakhon Ratchasima, collapsed, killing three workers. Days of heavy rainfall were believed to have been a factor in the collapse.

Nick Reiner’s Troubled Past Could Impact Murder Case: REPORT

0

The heartbreaking murders of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner are the focus of a new episode of TMZ Investigates, which aired Friday (Jan. 9) on Fox.

The special dives into unsettling new details about the case — including the state of the investigation, a key missing piece of evidence, and the mental health struggles of their son, Nick Reiner.

The 32-year-old faces two counts of first-degree murder for the stabbing death of his parents in December 2025.

Nick Reiner’s Troubled Rehab History

The documentary revisits Nick Reiner’s years-long battle with addiction, which reportedly led to 18 rehab stints. Many were only 30-day stays — long enough to detox, but too short to address deeper mental health concerns.

READ MORE: Rob + Michele Reiner’s Final Hours: From Party Argument to Family Tragedy

“His first rehab stint was when his parents found him doing both Percocet and Xanax with a friend,” TMZ producer Olivia Heinle said in the documentary.

Dr. Drew Pinsky, an addiction expert not connected to the case, added: “Thirty days for me seems almost meaningless for someone with Nick’s history. What you want is something structured and long-term. Parents have a hard time accepting that.”

Nick also allegedly picked up dangerous habits during treatment. TMZ executive producer Charles Latibeaudiere noted that one fellow patient told him heroin was easier to score than prescription pills.

The Murder Weapon Still Hasn’t Been Found

One of the most shocking revelations in the episode: the knife allegedly used in the killings still hasn’t been recovered.

“This is a critical piece of evidence,” Harvey Levin explained. “If Nick bought the knife before the murders, that suggests premeditation. If it came from the kitchen, it could suggest spontaneity. But right now, that weapon hasn’t been found.”

The absence of the knife could complicate the prosecution’s ability to prove intent.

A Mental Health Diagnosis + Past Outbursts

According to TMZ, Nick was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder in 2020 — a serious mental illness that combines features of schizophrenia with mood disorders like depression or mania.

Before his diagnosis, sources say Nick was also using meth, which can severely worsen symptoms. At one point, TMZ reports, he had a violent outburst that involved “tearing up” his parents’ home.

Where the Case Stands Now

Nick Reiner was arrested on Dec. 14, 2025 — hours after Rob and Michele were found stabbed to death in their Los Angeles home.

He now faces:

  • Two counts of first-degree murder
  • A special circumstance for multiple murders
  • An enhancement for using a deadly weapon

As of Jan. 7, Nick’s attorney, Alan Jackson, officially withdrew from the case, citing “circumstances outside of our control.”

However, before stepping away, he told reporters, “Nick Reiner is not guilty of murder. Print that.”

A Family with Hollywood Legacy

Rob Reiner — beloved director of Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, and When Harry Met Sally…met Michele Singer in the late ’80s.

They raised three children together: Jake, Romy, and Nick. Rob also adopted daughter, Tracey, from his first marriage to actress/director Penny Marshall.

UConn finally wins at Seton Hall, exorcises another demon from last season

0

NEWARK, N.J. — For Dan Hurley’s Connecticut Huskies, 2025-26 has become all about exorcising the demons from a season ago.

No matter how those exorcisms happen.

On Tuesday night, the hardest purging one yet.

Last year’s Huskies famously didn’t get that unobtainable three-peat in 2025, but their chase for a third national title in four seasons is very much on thanks to their latest win, this one a vindicating 69-64 victory vs. Seton Hall on Tuesday. With the win, the Huskies are 17-1 overall and 7-0 to start league play for the first time since 1998-99 — the season of UConn’s first NCAA championship.

Now it’s chasing a seventh.

The path through the Big East looks significantly easier this season vs. last. Still, one the team’s toughest tests came vs. the Pirates. No. 3 UConn was up by 18 points in the second half and seemingly on its way to a cruise-control road win against 25th-ranked Seton Hall. Instead, the Huskies succumbed to the Pirates’ full-court press in the final 10 minutes and wound up narrowly escaping, winning despite 17 turnovers.

“These guys STICK to you,” Hurley said. “They’re very quick.”

UConn’s victory was ultimately aided by the fact that Seton Hall, which ranks near the bottom of 3-point accuracy among all Power Five teams (31.4%), was a season-worst 1-of-16 from beyond the arc. Connecticut was barely better, managing a mere 3-of-17 showing from deep. Seton Hall’s only 3-pointer came in the final minute, when Pirates junior guard Mike Williams III hit a trey to cut the lead to two with 48 seconds remaining. Well-timed, but too little too late.

Kansas upsets No. 2 Iowa State: Jayhawks hand Cyclones first loss just days after Bill Self says 'we suck'

The Huskies’ victory marked the first time in 58 months — since March 3, 2021 — that Connecticut beat SHU on the road. And it did it in escape-route fashion in the final minute. UConn point guard Silas Demary Jr. sank two foul shots with less than 30 seconds remaining to put the Huskies up 67-64. The Rock was thumping.

Then Williams III tried another 3, only to have it blocked by Husky freshman guard Braylon Mullins. A scramble ensued. Who wound up with the ball underneath?

Demary.

He hit two more freebies to give the game its final score. A UConn team beating opponents by 16.6 points on average had to settle for a five-point edge, nearly blowing an 18-point lead along the way. That kind of twist can send Hurley into a fit against many teams and on many nights. But not this one.

That’s because the Pirates are a viable potential NCAA tourney squad, at least in Hurley’s view.

“That’s a team that’s going to compete at the top of the league,” said Hurley, “I wouldn’t want to see Seton Hall’s name drawn next to mine in the NCAA Tournament this year, I can tell you that.”

The Hall’s rise has been one of the surprises of the season. SHU was picked last in the Big East in the preseason, yet no team at the Power Five level has jumped more in KenPom’s ratings from October until now than the Pirates (50 spots: from 93rd on opening day to 43rd after Tuesday’s loss).

Sweet revenge and a win to separate in-league

Tuesday night was about survival, Hurley said, and of course ending the road streak against his alma mater. UConn had lost its last four trips down to the Prudential Center — yes, including both NCAA title seasons under Hurley earlier this decade — and so this victory is surely a balm on his soul.

Though he swears it wasn’t something weighing on him until this past weekend.

“You’re obviously not thinking about it in the preseason. You’re not thinking about it in the summer. You’re not thinking about it in October,” Hurley told CBS Sports in the UConn locker room afterward. “But then when you get to two days out and the media reminds you that you’ve lost four in a row here, and that chip gets implanted somewhere in the brain, you try not to think about that.”

Says who? With the comfort of heading home with a win, UConn senior forward Alex Karaban readily admitted he was thinking about it.

“A lot of anger just walking into this arena,” he said. That anger was channeled appropriately in the first half, when UConn went into the break with a 35-22 lead. Karaban finished with 13 points and avoided an O-fer at Seton Hall for his lauded college career.

“It was never ‘here we go again,'” he said. “It was staying together. It was similar to BYU in a way.”

Connecticut’s win vs. BYU in November was another game that was won because of Demary’s poise late. On the whole on this night, the most valuable player on the floor was Tarris Reed Jr., who had 21 points and nine boards.

“That’s real against those guys,” Hurley said of Reed’s showing against Shaheen Holloway’s team. “I just have so much respect for how hard his teams play. His team may be the hardest-playing team in the country.”

Huskies can win in myriad ways

In a down year for the Big East (where questions linger about if the league can play itself to even four NCAA bids), Tuesday was a chance for Seton Hall to vault its national profile. This was the school’s first ranked-on-ranked home game since Jan. 1, 2022. The comeback was impressive — UConn somehow only took one field goal attempt in the final five minutes, a feat that almost definitely will not be repeated the rest of the season — but the Huskies made just enough plays to get it done.

A Seton Hall win would’ve been better for the Big East. UConn’s on a tier to itself in the conference, though. It’s winning in a lot of ways, including dramatics as of late. Last Wednesday, UConn overcame a 13-point gap with less than nine minutes remaining to slip out with an OT win at middling Providence. There have also been emphatic defeats over Illinois, Kansas and Florida.

The defense is closing in on efficiency numbers that are in earshot of the Hurley’s two title teams.

“We’ve shown some special qualities,” Hurley told CBS Sports. “With our injuries and the schedule, and we’ve won well, but haven’t played as well (lately). Especially at the offensive end and on the backboard, in terms of the turnovers, and some rebounding issues that I think are fixable with this team.”

Hurley said if the turnovers and rebounding get worked out, UConn is as strong as any team in the country with as good of a chance at the title as anyone. And he’s right. The Huskies are 5-0 on the road. That’s a better road record than anyone else in high-major basketball, and only second to Miami-Ohio’s 8-0 mark. (The RedHawks are a college hoops-best 18-0 after their 100-61 win vs. Central Michigan win Tuesday.)

The Huskies have won 13 in a row since their shorthanded loss at home to No. 1 Arizona in November. It looks like this team’s worst-case scenario in the Big East will be an 18-2 run of the regular season. Villanova and St. John’s both are playing well, but beyond that, challengers will be hard to come by.

When UConn lost in overtime at Seton Hall a year ago — vs. a SHU team that would finish with just seven wins — Hurley called the ride back that night a “coffin on wheels.”

I asked him late Tuesday: What’s the term for this year’s trip back to campus?

“Grateful,” he said.

UConn has five Quad 1 wins, tied for second-most with six other teams. But those teams (Arizona, Nebraska, Vanderbilt, Iowa State, BYU) have a lot more opportunities in Q1 because their leagues are so much better and deeper than the Big East.

“There’s not a lot of chances for us in the league this year to get Quad 1-type games games, to get Quad 1 wins, to get to beat teams that are going to be in the field,” Hurley said. “I mean, that’s a team (Seton Hall) that’s going to be in the field, that’s an excellent team. It was actually fun to play a game that we could gain from. I think the group was probably a little bit looser, because it was a game that we could gain from, as opposed to a game that you lose, ow becomes a résumé hit.”

Seton Hall’s improvement is huge for the Big East but also beneficial to UConn in this spot. The Huskies are the league’s only title national title contender. The start of 2026 has been a bit bumpy, but all signs point to a return to supremacy when it matters most. The next two months will be about asserting dominance, taking back the Big East and positioning themselves for another run into April.

Until then, Hurley will surely conjure up a few more demons to hunt.

Ugandan voters face soldiers in the street and internet shutdown before election

0

KAMPALA, Uganda — Ugandans are set to vote Thursday in an election that is likely to extend the rule of the long-term president while raising concerns about transparency, hereditary rule, military interference and an opposition strategy to prevent vote tampering at polling stations.

President Yoweri Museveni, who has held power since 1986, seeks a seventh term that would bring him closer to five decades in power. But he faces a strong challenge from the musician-turned-politician best known as Bobi Wine, a 43-year-old who represents those yearning for political change.

Six other candidates are running for president in the East African nation of roughly 45 million people. Electoral authorities say there are 21.6 million registered voters.

Analysts say Museveni will almost certainly retain power, but at 81 he has become even more reliant on the nation’s security forces to enforce his authority. His son and presumptive heir, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, is the top commander of the military, which Wine accuses of interfering in the electoral process.

Here is what to know about the issues dominating the election.

On Tuesday, less than 48 hours before the start of voting, the Uganda Communications Commission directed internet service providers to temporarily suspend the general public’s access to the internet, as well as the sale and registration of new SIM cards.

The government agency said the measure was “necessary to mitigate the rapid spread of online misinformation, disinformation, electoral fraud, and related risks.” It also cited a risk to national security stemming from possible violence.

The internet shutdown was a blow to pro-democracy activists and others who use the internet to share information about alleged electoral malpractices including ballot stuffing and other offenses that routinely plague Uganda’s elections.

Wine’s party, the National Unity Platform, has urged followers to stay near polling stations and remain watchful after voting as part of an effort to prevent rigging.

Ugandan law allows voters to gather 20 meters (65 feet) from polling stations. Electoral officials are urging Ugandans to cast a ballot and then go home, perhaps returning later to witness vote counting.

The argument over whether voters should stay at polling stations as witnesses has animated public commentary and raised fears that the election could turn violent if security forces choose to enforce the electoral body’s guidance.

“The first step is for all of us to stay at the polling stations (while observing the 20-metre distance) and ensure that nothing criminal happens,” Wine wrote Tuesday on X. “We implore everyone to use their cameras and record anything irregular.”

In a New Year’s Eve address, the president said he recommended security forces use tear gas to break up crowds of what he called “the criminal opposition.”

Wine faced similar setbacks when he first ran for president in 2021. He often was roughed up by the police, clothes ripped from his body, and dozens of his supporters were jailed.

Wine told The Associated Press in a recent interview that at least three of his supporters have been killed in violent campaign events, claiming “the military has largely taken over the election.”

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva has cited “widespread repression,” including the abduction and disappearance of opposition supporters.

Ugandan authorities say the presidential campaigns have been mostly peaceful. Ugandan authorities began deploying troops on Saturday in parts of the capital, Kampala, with armored trucks spreading into different parts of the city and soldiers patrolling the streets.

Military spokesman Col. Chris Magezi said the deployment was meant to deter violence, rejecting concerns that the mobilization was anti-democratic.

Museveni has ruled Uganda for nearly 40 years by repeatedly rewriting the rules to stay in power. Term and age limits have been scrapped and rivals jailed or sidelined. But he has no recognizable successor in the upper ranks of the ruling party, the National Resistance Movement.

Kainerugaba, the president’s son, has asserted a wish to succeed his father, raising fears of hereditary rule.

Kainerugaba is a four-star general who sparked controversy by writing social media messages widely seen as offensive including comments about beheading Wine. He also wrote about hanging Kizza Besigye, an opposition figure who has been jailed over treason charges that he says are politically motivated.

FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH Announce 2026 North America Tour With CODY JINKS & EVA UNDER FIRE

0

One of the biggest names in modern hard rock is gearing up for a colossal return to the road. Five Finger Death Punch have announced the first leg of their 2026–2027 World Tour, a sprawling 48-city U.S. run produced by Live Nation that will celebrate two decades of the band’s chart-dominating career — and channel that momentum toward a cause far beyond the stage.

The tour launches Monday, July 20, 2026, at Freedom Mortgage Pavilion in Camden, NJ, and runs through Friday, October 23, wrapping up at Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow, VA.

Joining Five Finger Death Punch as special guest is platinum-certified outlaw country star Cody Jinks, who will be touring in support of his album In My Blood. Rising hard rock outfit Eva Under Fire, fresh off critical acclaim and ahead of their forthcoming 2026 album Villainous, will round out the bill. Get your tickets here.

Beyond the size and scope of the tour itself, Five Finger Death Punch are once again leveraging their platform for something bigger. Long recognized as one of rock’s most charitable acts — with decades of support for U.S. military veterans, first responders, and their families — the band is expanding that mission in 2026 with a new campaign aligned with Team USA ahead of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.

As part of the initiative, a portion of ticket sales from the 2026 U.S. tour will be allocated to support high-performance training programs for American athletes preparing for international competition. Founding guitarist Zoltan Bathory has selected USA Judo as his beneficiary, while vocalist Ivan Moody will direct his contribution toward USA Cycling’s BMX Racing and BMX Freestyle teams.

“It’s a little-known fact that the United States is one of the only major countries in the world where the government does not fund Olympic and Paralympic athletes or their training programs,” Bathory says. “Our athletes are competing against nations with fully funded teams, while U.S. teams rely almost exclusively on private donations and sponsorships. We believe supporting Team USA is both patriotic and necessary, especially with the Olympic and Paralympic Games coming home in 2028.”

Moody echoes the sentiment, framing the effort as a natural extension of the band’s values. “These athletes represent the best of who we are—dedication, sacrifice, discipline,” he says. “If we can help level the playing field even a little, we’re all in.”

Sources: Kyle Tucker fields offers from Mets, Blue Jays

0

Outfielder Kyle Tucker, the top free agent available this offseason, has been offered a short-term deal by the New York Mets that is believed to be worth $50 million per season, sources told ESPN’s Jesse Rogers on Tuesday.

Tucker, who turns 29 on Saturday, continues to field offers after he declined a $22.025 million qualifying offer by the Chicago Cubs following the season. Sources told ESPN that the Toronto Blue Jays have also made a long-term offer to Tucker, who is one of the best left-handed hitters in the league.

While his past two seasons have been interrupted by injuries, including a fractured right hand and a calf strain that suppressed his second-half numbers with the Cubs in 2025, Tucker and Juan Soto are the only hitters with a 1:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio while compiling a slugging percentage above .500.

Tucker was fantastic in the first half of the season with the Cubs, hitting .280 with 17 home runs while being named to the All-Star team for the fourth time, but he finished with only 22 homers and 73 RBIs in 136 games for the season, although he was the Cubs’ primary DH in the playoffs.

After returning from the hand injury, Tucker struggled at the plate, hitting .218 in July and .244 in August.
