RODDY BOTTUM Reflects On Being Gay In The Hair-Metal Era: “It Was A Really Weird World To Be In”

0

During a recent appearance on the Beardo & Weirdo podcast — hosted by Five Finger Death Punch bassist Chris Kael and comedian Craig GassFaith No More co-founder Roddy Bottum opened up about growing up gay in the 1980s music scene, an era dominated by flamboyant yet deeply misogynistic hair-metal bands.

Bottum, who is currently promoting his newly released memoir The Royal We, described the contradiction at the heart of the era’s dominant rock culture.

“It was the ’80s, ’90s,” Bottum said. “When Guns N’ Roses came out… the look of those bands and the hair-metal vibe — it was a really intense, kind of funny juxtaposition. Those guys were very feminine. Teased hair, a lot of makeup and costuming, but super, super misogynistic.”

He added that the hyper-sexualized imagery pushed by MTV and rock videos at the time was simply accepted as normal, despite its ugliness.

MTV and the videos that we watched were so over the top, misogynistic like crazy,” he said. “It was ugly to women. We can say that now and recognize it now, but when we were in the thick of it, we just kind of took it for granted. Like, ‘Oh, this is what people want.’ Slutty girls — just so many levels of it.”

For Bottum, existing as a gay man within that environment was especially difficult. “It was an intense place to be for a gay man in that world,” he said. “We didn’t start off as that kind of band, but at one point we got lumped into those kinds of bands, and that was a hard place to navigate.”

Bottum also discussed how Faith No More‘s genre-blurring mix of funk, alternative rock, and metal left audiences and industry figures unsure how to categorize the band. “People didn’t really know what to do with it,” he explained.

He recalled how early associations — including a guitarist who was friends with Metallica — led to the band being marketed as metal after Metallica members began wearing Faith No More shirts publicly.

“Suddenly it was like, ‘Oh, that’s how we market this band. They’re a metal band,'” Bottum said. “Which wasn’t really the case. It opened us up to a whole new fanbase, but it sidelined us into this world of metal, which was odd too.”

That misalignment became clear on tour. Metallica and Guns N’ Roses would take us on tour and we’d play, and people were just like, ‘What is this?'” he said. “It never worked.”

Bottum also reflected on coming out publicly in July 1993, effectively becoming rock music’s first openly gay star — a position he says came without many visible role models.

“Not really,” he said when asked if anyone inspired him. “I really feel like I was a pioneer in that regard. Rob Halford didn’t come out until a couple of years after I had. Freddie Mercury never publicly came out. Elton John — I remember hearing him talk about his wife and being like, ‘Wait, what?'”

As a young fan, Bottum said he searched for someone he could relate to but found very few artists who were openly gay. “You’d hear rumors — ‘Michael Stipe is gay,’ Bob Mould — but people didn’t talk about it,” he said. “It was kept quiet.”

The first openly gay musician he personally connected with was Patty Schemel, former drummer of Hole, a friendship that remains strong to this day. “We had that bond,” Bottum said. “We were both open about being gay and in that world of rock. It’s funny for kids to imagine this now, but it wasn’t done back then.”

Looking back, Bottum‘s reflections underscore just how much the culture has shifted — and how isolating it once was to exist openly and authentically in a scene that thrived on contradiction, silence, and spectacle.

Kansas State fires Jerome Tang

Kansas State has fired fourth-year coach Jerome Tang, a source told CBS Sports.

The decision was made Sunday by the school and comes less than four days after Tang’s postgame rant went viral following an embarrassing 91-62 home loss to Cincinnati

“This was embarrassing,” Tang said Wednesday night at his press conference. “These dudes do not deserve to wear this uniform. There will be very few of them in it next year. I’m embarrassed for the university, I’m embarrassed for our fans, our student section. It is just ridiculous.”

K-State is coming off a 78-64 loss at No. 3 Houston on Saturday. Tang had the players’ names removed from the back of their jerseys for that game.

The Wildcats are 10-15 and in the midst of their second-worst season in the past 20-plus years. Kansas State ranks 101st at KenPom and is 1-11 in the Big 12. The team is headed toward a second straight sub-.500 season despite being one of the big spenders in the transfer portal the past two offseasons.

Kansas State will attempt to fire Tang for cause, according to a source. Tang has a buyout of more than $18 million, per the terms of his contract.

Tang went 71-57 in less than four seasons on the job, including a 29-39 mark in the Big 12. He was hired in 2022 and an immediate success: He guided the Wildcats to the Elite Eight with a 3-seed and finished 26-10 thanks to the dynamic duo of point guard Markquis Nowell and forward Keyontae Johnson. Nowell’s 19 assists in the Sweet 16 against Michigan State at Madison Square Garden set both an NCAA Tournament record and an optimistic tone for the Tang era, but it’s been a litany of letdowns ever since.

Online activity of Canada school shooter shows a fascination with mass violence and violent content, expert says

0

The online activity of the 18-year-old behind the deadly shooting inside a Canadian high school last week revealed an interest in firearms, mass violence and a history of consuming violent “gore” content, according to expert analysis.

The shooter, identified as Jesse Van Rootselaar, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, spent time in dark corners of the internet, posting about her struggles with substance use and mental health. Van Rootselaar referred to gore content as “addictive” in posts shared with CBS News by analysts at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that works toward solutions to combat extremism.

She was active on the website WatchPeopleDie, which hosts material portraying graphic violence against people and animals. The site has become a common thread between perpetrators of mass violence, CBS News has previously reported, with several other school shooters frequenting the site. Cody Zoschak, a senior manager at the institute, told CBS News that Van Rootselaar’s digital footprint revealed a visit to the WatchPeopleDie page of 15-year-old Natalie Rupnow, who shot and killed a student and a teacher at a school in Wisconsin in 2024.

Zoschak said these online communities can exacerbate typical teenage emotions like loneliness and desperation. In the digital era, teens feeling isolated can opt into online spaces where they might receive validation from strangers, instead of seeking help within their communities. But these spaces can be a dangerous echo chamber with ill-intentioned strangers, he said.

“The worst influence you could have was the worst kid in your school. Now, the worst influence you can have is the worst person on the internet,” Zoschak said. “There’s a big difference in the degree between those two.”

By comparing social media profile elements and usernames and cross-referencing photos and content posted online, ISD analysts were able to identify accounts associated with Van Rootselaar and pinpoint when the shooter’s online activity began to take a troubling turn.

Zoschak said ISD was able to trace Van Rootselaar’s activity across various online accounts spanning from 2019, when the shooter would have been around 12. Posts began with discussions about video games, and then, in 2021, there was a post with a photo of a gun that Van Rootselaar claimed to own. Around 2023, Van Rootselaar began posting about drug use and mental health struggles. Zoschak said Van Rootselaar had a year of possible inactivity in 2024, with no traceable posts. Then, about five months ago, Van Rootselaar created an account on WatchPeopleDie, which revealed comments made on dozens of gore posts.

In addition, independent media company 404 Media recently reported on a mass shooting simulation game created on Roblox that online sleuths linked back to Van Rootselaar. It was not immediately clear when that simulation was created.

“We have removed the user account connected to this horrifying incident as well as any content associated with the suspect,” Roblox said in a statement to CBS News. “We are committed to fully supporting law enforcement in their investigation.”

The game was in a separate app called Roblox Studio, which could only be accessed by coders and developers, so the game only had seven visits. But these types of games and other grim content have made their way onto the main platform before with recreation games of the school shootings at Columbine, Uvalde and Parkland, according to the Anti-Defamation League.

As Van Rootselaar descended into violent content online, mental health concerns also unfolded at home, with police responding to mental health calls at Van Rootselaar’s family residence over the last several years.

During a news conference last week, police said Van Rootselaar was apprehended on different occasions under the Mental Health Act, which in British Columbia allows police to apprehend someone experiencing a mental health crisis that may need treatment.

Six people were killed at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School — most of them younger than 13. Van Rootselaar’s 11-year-old brother and mother were also found dead at a residence. The shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School was Canada’s deadliest since 1989, when 25-year-old Marc Lepine shot and killed 14 women at Montreal’s École Polytechnique before taking his own life.

Mark Chesnutt Ends Show Early, Scraps 2 More Due to Illness

0

A representative for Mark Chesnutt tells Taste of Country that the singer’s health issues are “nothing major” after he ended a show early this week.

Chesnutt was scheduled to play the Oxford Performing Arts Center in Oxford, Ala. on Thursday (Feb. 12), and he began the set — but a short while later, he ended the event much earlier than planned.

Mark Chesnutt Ends Alabama Show Early

A statement from the venue posted to Facebook stated that “due to sudden illness, the artist was unable to complete tonight’s performance.”

That statement went on to say that they hoped to reschedule Chesnutt’s show, and that ticketholders will have the option to either have their tickets honored for that date or receive a refund.

Commenters on that post wrote that Chesnutt played only three songs before he was forced to stop, and that the turn of events came as a big surprise.

“We all thought he was kidding at first, even his band was shocked,” one Facebook user wrote.

Others were disappointed, but understood the situation.

“Even sick, he sounded better than some artists these days,” one fan wrote. “Looking forward to the rescheduled date!”

“His health is important and he needs to make that a priority,” another added. “Praying for him to get better.”

Mark Chesnutt Postpones More Shows

Following the Feb. 12 date, Chesnutt canceled or postponed two more shows on Feb. 13 and Feb. 14: One in Augusta, Ga., the other in Smithfield, N.C.

There’s no word from the Augusta venue about any potential makeup date in the works, but the Smithfield show has already been rescheduled to March 29.

What’s Wrong With Mark Chesnutt?

Fans were concerned, especially due to the major health issues that Chesnutt has been through in recent years.

But the singer’s publicist tells Taste of Country that the issue that forced him to cancel this show is relatively minor.

“Mark has been fighting off a sinus infection. It was affecting his voice and he wasn’t able to continue the show,” the publicist says. “He should be good to go soon.”

What Health Battles Has Mark Chesnutt Faced?

Chesnutt has faced several serious health concerns over the past five years, including a fractured spine that required back surgery in 2023.

In June of 2024, he experienced a “heart health issue” that required emergency quadruple bypass surgery.

In April 2025, he revealed that he’d been battling an addiction to alcohol for years, and that he nearly died before getting sober in November 2023.

Last October, Chesnutt missed a show in in Louisiana for a health issue that required hospitalization. His reps later said he was suffering from “low sodium count and extreme high blood pressure.”

He apologized to his fans for missing the show, as well as another subsequent planned event, and said he hoped to reschedule both appearances.

The next planned stop on Chesnutt’s tour calendar is for Feb. 21 in Jackson, Miss.

Sources: Seahawks expected to hire 49ers’ Brian Fleury as OC

0

RENTON, Wash. — The Seattle Seahawks are expected to hire San Francisco 49ers tight ends coach and run game coordinator Brian Fleury as their new offensive coordinator, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Sunday.

The decision represents a pivot for the Super Bowl champion Seahawks, who began their search for Klint Kubiak’s replacement thinking they would likely promote from within.

Instead, they pluck from a division rival by hiring Fleury, who has spent the past seven seasons with the 49ers. He joined Kyle Shanahan’s staff in 2019 as a defensive quality-control coach and spent the next two seasons (2020-21) as an offensive quality-control coach before a promotion to tight ends coach (2022). Fleury added the title of run game coordinator last season.

Kubiak spent one season as Seattle’s offensive coordinator before the Las Vegas Raiders hired him to be their head coach after the Seahawks won Super Bowl LX last Sunday.

Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald interviewed four in-house candidates for the job. Among them was quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko, a longtime Kubiak assistant whom he is hiring to be the Raiders’ non-playcalling OC, sources told Schefter on Sunday.

The other internal candidates the Seahawks interviewed were run game specialist Justin Outten, tight ends coach Mack Brown and passing game coordinator Jake Peetz, a source told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

Macdonald was seeking scheme continuity in his next coordinator, and although the coach didn’t promote from within as he initially thought he would, quarterback Sam Darnold and the rest of Seattle’s offense shouldn’t have to start over entirely in 2026. The 49ers run a version of the West Coast offense that Kubiak — who spent the 2023 season in San Francisco — ran in Seattle.

Fleury, a Maryland native, played quarterback for the Terrapins and for FCS school Towson. He began his NFL coaching career with the Buffalo Bills (quality control) in 2013 before serving as the Cleveland Browns‘ assistant linebackers coach in 2014 and their outside linebackers coach in 2015.

He was a football research analyst for the Miami Dolphins in 2016 before spending the next two seasons as the team’s director of football research.

Colombian president accepts rebel’s proposal to have a commission investigate its possible drug ties

0

BOGOTA, Colombia — Colombian President Gustavo Petro said Sunday he would accept a proposal made by the nation’s largest remaining rebel group to allow an independent commission to investigate the group’s alleged links to the drug trade.

The proposal was made in a video published on Jan. 20 video by Antonio Garcia, the head of the National Liberation Army, or ELN. In the video, Garcia said that while the rebels impose a tax on cocaine traders, they do not run any drug trafficking routes or cocaine labs.

“The ELN has no relation to drug trafficking,” Garcia said in the video and challenged the government to allow an independent commission to verify the group’s claims.

In a message on X Sunday, Petro said he would accept the proposal, adding that the agency that verifies the rebel’s claims should be “scientific and independent of governments” and should deliver its findings to the United Nations. Petro also urged the rebels to back efforts to replace coca crops in the northeastern Catatumbo region.

Colombia’s president has long accused the rebels of profiting from the drug trade calling its leadership “drug traffickers dressed up as guerrilla fighters.”

The group’s alleged relation to drug trafficking was one of the issues that stopped peace talks from advancing in the first two years of the Petro administration.

Peace talks between both sides ultimately broke down last year after the ELN staged an offensive in Catatumbo in which dozens of people were killed and more than 50,000 were forced to flee their homes.

The ELN said in January that it would like to work with the government on a “national accord” that would enable negotiations to resume.

But Petro has said that he will only resume talks with the group when it gives up drug trafficking.

The ELN was founded in the early 1960s and has approximately 5,000 fighters in Colombia and neighboring Venezuela.

The ELN’s grip over rural communities along Colombia’s border with Venezuela has increased in recent years as it fills a power vacuum left by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, the rebel group that disbanded in 2017, after signing a peace deal with Colombia’s government.

In January, Colombian officials said that in call with President Donald Trump they discussed the possibility of staging attacks on the ELN with the help of the U.S. military.

SKELETAL REMAINS Supposedly Banned From Future 70,000 Tons Of Metal Cruises

0

The Los Angeles-based death metal band Skeletal Remains have landed themselves in some hot water after reports surfaced from both 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise staff and the cruise’s patrons that the frontman and guitarist, Chris Monroy, was intoxicated and sexually assaulted numerous women while on board.

The original reports surfaced in the 70,000 Tons Of Metal 2027 unofficial Facebook group in which an anonymous user and another woman posted about their experiences. These details were then shared to Reddit, where others shared their own encounters with Monroy.

The anonymous user on Facebook said that: “I’d like to give a big sarcastic shout out to the guitar player of Skeletal Remains for being a total drunk piece of shit who was groping women on the boat. Learn some consent before we ass fuck you next time you come around. Fuck you and your band.” This post is not available to view as the Facebook group is private, however in the details shared to Reddit, the original poster included a screenshot of the original post.

The Reddit user then links a public Facebook post from a woman on board, with a photo saying, “You are cordially invited to fight me,” and the caption reading, “Oh and BTW fuck Chris Monroy. He’s a fucking predator and a wasted piece of shit. First hand account. Stop listening to Skeletal Remains period.”

A Reddit user in the Facebook group claims that other women were commenting on the above posts, confirming the reports with incidents of their own, before another Reddit user comments with their own experience while on board as a staff member of 70,000 Tons Of Metal.

“Posting here bc privacy versus other social media outlets. I was the one who reported him on the ship. He would not leave me alone after I got off of my volunteer shift and went to the casino bar with one of my best friends. Chris continued to approach me and grab me by the waist on my bare skin. I told him to fuck off multiple times. He would then continue to walk by me and grab me as he was walking by several times.

“I then sat at the bar with my friend, and he grabbed my cigarette out of my hand and my drink, and began to smoke my cigarette and drink my drink and grab me by the waist at the same time. I was telling him to fuck off extremely loud and he simply would not get the point. People sitting next to us started to notice and asked if we needed security and I said yes I told the bartender also to call security and they never showed up. I then decided to take action the next day and reported it to the higher ups of 70 K because I knew action needed to be taken.

“It is really upsetting to then hear that his behavior was happening in other instances on the ship and in previous events. Why no one has come forward before me? I’m not sure but there’s tons of video footage of what happened that entire ship has cameras everywhere. As per the security/police team and the information that they told me when they were reviewing my statement, not to mention, that ship also has 75% audio accompanying that footage so if anyone questions this decision made by 70000Tons Of Metal and their decision believe me that it’s official.”
