GOP Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith and Democrat Scott Colom to face off in Mississippi Senate race

0

GOP Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith will face off against Democrat Scott Colom in November in Mississippi, with NBC News projecting that both have won their respective primaries on Tuesday.

It will be a difficult race for Colom, a district attorney. A Democrat has not won a Senate race in Mississippi since 1982 and President Donald Trump won the state by 23 points in 2024. And Ty Pinkins, who was the Democratic Senate nominee against GOP Sen. Roger Wicker in 2024, is running for Senate again, but as an independent.

But some Democrats, including Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chairwoman Kirsten Gillibrand, have suggested that Colom could be a strong candidate. It also won’t be the first time Hyde-Smith and Colom have clashed: the GOP senator blocked Colom’s nomination for a federal judgeship during the Biden administration.

Colom told NBC News ahead of his campaign launch in September that he forgave Hyde-Smith but remained “frustrated with how she votes,” pointing to Hyde-Smith’s support for Trump’s signature tax cut and spending legislation known as the One Big Beautiful Bill.

Trump endorsed Hyde-Smith ahead of Tuesday’s primary, but she still faced a challenge from Republican Sarah Adlakha.

A physician who largely self-funded her campaign, Adlakha launched ads Hyde-Smith of being beholden to special interests, while Hyde-Smith accused Adlakha of being a Chicago liberal and touted her endorsement from Trump.

The primary did force Hyde-Smith to spend some of her campaign funds, spending $2.4 million on the race as of Feb. 18, according to campaign finance reports filed with the Federal Election Commission. Colom has also spent in the race despite facing a nominal challenge for the Democratic nomination.

Hyde-Smith still had a financial advantage in the contest, with $2.2 million in her campaign account to Colom’s $560,000.

Hyde-Smith is running for her second full term in the Senate. She was appointed to the seat in 2018 to replace former GOP Sen. Thad Cochran, and won a special election against former Democratic Rep. Mike Espy, who also served as Agriculture Secretary, to serve out the rest of Cochran’s term. Hyde-Smith won her first full term in the Senate in 2020, defeating Espy again, this time by 10 points, as Trump carried the state by 16 points.

50 Best Carrie Underwood Songs

0

Carrie Underwood‘s best songs weren’t necessarily radio hits.

Sure, top songs including “Before He Cheats” and “Jesus Take the Wheel” rank high on this list of her 50 best, but so too do album cuts that fans can’t forget two, three, five or 15 years later.

What Are Carrie Underwood’s Top Songs?

In fact, you’ll find three songs that barely cracked country radio inside the Top 10, and four more to round out the Top 50 Carrie Underwood songs.

Her biggest hits soared to No. 1 and sold millions of digital copies, but the American Idol winner’s best songs left an indelible impression on the hearts and souls of fans. In sharing her stories, she’s often giving a voice to your story.

Indeed, the very best of these songs are tearjerkers, but that’s not to say all (or even any) are sad.

Find a few collaborations sprinkled throughout this list, but we stuck to songs that feature Underwood as the primary vocalist, so “Remind Me” with Brad Paisley and “The Fighter” with Keith Urban are out.

A forgotten Sam Hunt duet cracks the Top 50, as does her early career partnership with Sons of Sylvia and her once-in-a-lifetime recording with Randy Travis. In fact, “I Told You So” is one of our absolute favorite Carrie Underwood songs, and you seem to agree.

To ignore commercial performances would be selfish, but to assume her best songs are among her 15 No. 1 singles or 28 Billboard Country Airplay Top 10s would be naive.

We asked, we listened and then we poured through dozens of Carrie Underwood songs to create a definitive list of her best songs. Songs she emphasized on tour earn an edge over some others, as you’ll soon see. No. 1 is a live phenomenon.

2026 Kentucky Derby horses, odds, futures, preview, date: Expert who nailed 12 Derby-Oaks Doubles says picks

0

The 152nd Run for the Roses is just a few short weeks away. That means the Kentucky Derby field is starting to garner attention. Among the early 2026 Kentucky Derby favorites already turning heads is Paladin, who is at 9-1. Nearly is at 10-1, followed by Canaletto at 15-1, and Renegade at 16-1 in the 2026 Kentucky Derby odds. Because it is early, however, the 2026 Kentucky Derby field is bound to change as the race draws closer. That’s why now is the best time to find value ahead of the Kentucky Derby 2026. Before making any 2026 Kentucky Derby picks, be sure to see the horse racing predictions and futures bets from SportsLine’s elite horse racing expert Jody Demling.

Bet the Kentucky Derby with the latest TwinSpires promo code CBSSPORTS to receive up to $400 in bonus bets to wager on almost any track by clicking here:

A fixture in the horse racing world who has been writing about, talking about and betting on races for years, Demling has nailed the Kentucky Oaks-Derby double 12 times in the last 17 years. He also predicted the top three 2025 Kentucky Derby finishers in the correct order and called the exacta in last year’s Preakness. Anyone who has followed him on horse racing betting sites could be way up.

Now, with the 2026 Kentucky Derby approaching and horse racing futures odds on the board, Demling is sharing his 2026 Kentucky Derby betting picks and 2026 Kentucky Derby predictions over at SportsLine. Go here to see them.

Top 2026 Kentucky Derby predictions

One of Demling’s surprising 2026 Kentucky Derby picks: He doesn’t have the favorite, Paladin (9-1), winning. The biggest reason is pedigree. Paladin is the son of Gun Runner, who had a lot of success, but not at the Derby distance of 1 ¼ miles. Gun runner was 0-3 at that distance until just before turning 5 years old.

Another strike against the favorite is his trainer, Chad Brown. Despite being one of the winningest trainers around, he has had zero success at the Kentucky Derby, going 0-9. To make matters worse, Brown-trained horses have finished outside the top eight four times, while just three have finished inside the top three. Even though Paladin has talent, Demling sees better Kentucky Derby options available elsewhere. See who to back at SportsLine.

Another stunner: Demling is high on Canaletto, even though he’s a longshot at 15-1. With just one race to his credit, Canaletto is somewhat of an unknown. What he showed, however, was impressive after he dominated at Gulfstream Park on January 25, posting a 1:36.28 time in his 1-mile maiden special weight race, finishing well ahead of Lost Money and Autobahn.

Demling says Canaletto has the “looks of a superstar in the making” and also loves his bloodline. He is a half-brother to Sandman and the son of Into Mischief, who won three of his six career starts. See which other horses to back at SportsLine, and you can make Kentucky Derby futures bets TwinSpires here:

How to make 2026 Kentucky Derby picks, bets

Demling is especially high on a massive double-digit longshot who could be the best of a “barnful of standouts.” Demling is sharing which horse it is, along with his entire projected 2026 Kentucky Derby leaderboard, over at SportsLine.

Which horse wins the Kentucky Derby 2026, and which huge double-digit longshot is a must-back? Check out the latest 2026 Kentucky Derby odds below, then visit SportsLine to see Demling’s picks for the Kentucky Derby, all from the expert who has nailed 12 Derby-Oaks doubles.

STEVE VAI Recorded A Ripping Solo Over A New Version Of VAN HALEN’s “Jump”

0

Steve Vai (and a bunch of other not-SteveVai people) has teamed up with Coca-Cola to deliver a new take on the Van Halen classic Jump, reimagined as an official anthem for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The revamped track arrives ahead of this summer’s massive 48-team tournament, which will be hosted across United States, Canada, and Mexico. For the project, Vai joins an eclectic lineup including J Balvin, Amber Mark, and Travis Barker of Blink-182.

Vai’s signature guitar work takes center stage throughout the track, adding bursts of whammy bar screams, melodic harmonies, and a flash of two-handed tapping that nods directly to the song’s co-writer and original guitarist, Eddie Van Halen.

“I never know what might come across my desk as an inquiry, but this was a taker,” Vai said of the unexpected collaboration. And it’s… very modern in its generally lo-fi and half-speed-ness? I mean, it’s not my thing, but I’m also not gonna turn down a Steve Vai solo.

Originally released in December 1983, “Jump” became Van Halen‘s first and only No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, cementing its place as one of the most recognizable rock songs ever recorded. The track also earned a nomination at the 27th Annual Grammy Awards, ultimately losing the Best Rock Performance category to Prince for the iconic song Purple Rain.

Bam Adebayo scores 83, second-most points in NBA history

0

Bam Adebayo scored the most points since Wilt Chamberlain‘s iconic 100-point game in 1962 as the Miami Heat star went for 83 points in a 150-129 win over the Washington Wizards on Tuesday night.

Adebayo went 20 of 43 from the field, 7 of 22 from 3-point range and 36 of 43 from the free throw line. He added nine rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks in just under 42 minutes.

His free throw makes and attempts both set NBA records for a game. The record for attempts was 39 by Dwight Howard — who got to the line that many times on two occasions. The record for free throws made in a game was 28, set by Wilt Chamberlain and Adrian Dantley.

Adebayo had averaged just 4.8 free throw attempts per game heading into Tuesday night.

Kobe Bryant’s 81-point game stood for two decades as the most points scored in a game since Chamberlain’s game on March 3, 1962. The last player to get this close to Bryant’s mark was Luka Doncic for the Mavericks on Jan. 26, 2024, when he scored 73.

Adebayo started the game hot, scoring 31 points in the first quarter. He had 43 by halftime and 62 by the end of the third quarter.

LeBron James had the previous Heat single-game scoring mark; his 61-point effort against Charlotte happened on March 3, 2014. Denver’s Nikola Jokic had the previous season high in the NBA this season with 56.

Adebayo passed them both in the third quarter — and just kept going. His previous career high was 41.
