Suspect dead after police shooting during traffic stop
Jesus Munoz-Duran, 53, showed a handgun and fired it at the officer, who returned fire., police said.
An investigation is underway by the New Mexico State Police after a suspect died in a shooting involving its officers. Around 8:30 p.m. Friday, an NMSP officer attempted a traffic stop of a gray 2004 Dodge pickup on Manzano Road. Instead, the truck continued driving before stopping at 4 Sierra Vista Drive in Meadow Lake. The driver, later identified as Jesus Munoz-Duran, 53, exited the vehicle and stood by the driver’s door, a NMSP news release said. The NMSP officer told Munoz-Duran to show his hands. Munoz-Duran showed a handgun and fired it at the officer, who returned fire that hit Munoz-Duran, the release said.Life-saving efforts were made by the officer and paramedics. Munoz-Duran was pronounced dead at the scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator. No officers were injured.It was later determined that Munoz-Duran was on probation for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and was a convicted felon, the release said.
