New Mexico Congresswoman Melanie Stansbury is among 50 Democrats supporting a bill to remove President Donald Trump from office using the 25th Amendment. Stansbury is a co-sponsor of the legislation introduced by Maryland Congressman Jamie Raskin, which proposes a 17-member panel to assess whether Trump is mentally or physically unable to perform the duties of his office. The bill spans 10 pages and would require Vice President JD Vance to sign off on the commission’s findings if passed. “There’s not the political will to do any of this, but does that mean we should stop seeking to make sure we have a president serving our country that’s fit and sane?” Stansbury said. The move comes as Democrats point to Trump’s Iran policy and his recent social media post, where he said he would “annihilate a civilization,” as reasons for his removal. “They’ve started this since day one,” said Amy Barela, chairwoman of the Republican Party of New Mexico. She argued that the effort to oust Trump has no merit. “Let’s go to the annihilation of the civilization and talk about the people and how they have actually been tortured since the last 40 years. And let’s talk about the protection of those citizens, and that the war being over there on their side and not our side is protecting Americans, especially from new nuclear tools and destruction,” Barela said. Political observers have described the bill’s chances in the Republican-controlled Congress as a long shot.
