A man who was involved in a downtown confrontation last week has died, APD said in a press release today.Juan Ortega, 40, died on Thursday at a residence in the 6000 block of Dennison Rd., S.W. Investigators found narcotics near Ortega’s deceased body. Ortega was recovering from a gunshot wound suffered on July 3, 2026 during a confrontation with another man in the area of Central Ave. and 3rd St., N.W.The confrontation initially occurred between Ortega and Stephen Griego, 41 and also resulted in a bystander being injured. APD officers who were patrolling downtown responded to the shooting and shot Griego, killing him.The Multi-Agency Task Force is investigating the shooting.
