SANTA FE, N.M. —
Police are investigating after a woman died from a gunshot wound Saturday in Santa Fe.
A spokesperson for Santa Fe Police says officers were called out to a home near Atocha Road and Rufina Street after reports of an accidental shooting.
According to police, 24-year-old Alexia Verdugo Sigala suffered at least one gunshot wound. She was airlifted to UNM Hospital in Albuquerque, but did not survive her injuries.
During the initial investigation, police learned that Verdugo Sigala’s brother had unintentionally fired a shot from a rifle.
Homicide detectives are working with the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office on this case. Formal charges against Verdugo Sigala’s brother have not been filed at this time, but that could change.
