Albuquerque Fire Rescue crews discovered a dead body while containing a wildfire near Tingley Drive and Alcalde Place on Saturday night, according to Albuquerque police. The fire was first reported at approximately 6:31 p.m., and the first arriving AFR unit described it as a medium wildland fire with heavy smoke and active flames reaching the tree canopy. Initially, the fire covered about one-tenth of an acre, with flame lengths reaching up to four feet in areas of heavy cottonwood timber and brush. Winds from the west at an estimated 4 mph contributed to a very high spread potential. Crews used a direct attack strategy with an anchor and flank approach to combat the fire, but access was challenging due to heavy brush and the lack of road access. Additional resources included Bernalillo County Fire Rescue Tender 66, a State Forestry strike team, and a Bernalillo County skid steer. The fire eventually grew to approximately 5.5 acres before forward progress was stopped and fully contained within four hours. One individual was found deceased at the fire’s edge, but authorities said the death did not appear to be associated with the fire. Albuquerque police officers, AFR investigators, and crime scene technicians were on the scene conducting an investigation. The fire and containment line will be monitored overnight, and State Forestry crews are expected to return in the morning to complete operations.
