Drivers on Highway 528 in Rio Rancho will encounter additional automated speed enforcement as the Rio Rancho Police Department expands its traffic safety program with the deployment of three new mobile speed camera units.The new cameras, scheduled to begin operating on Monday, June 15, will be dedicated exclusively to the state-maintained corridor and are part of a broader effort to improve roadway safety along one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares.One of the new mobile units will initially be stationed near the intersection of NM 528 and Pasilla Road before rotating among locations between Iris Road and Idalia Road. The remaining two units will be moved among designated locations between Westside Boulevard and 19th Avenue SE, and between Sara Road and Zenith Court.Motorists exceeding the posted speed limit by 11 mph or more will be subject to a $100 citation. The enforcement threshold matches that used by the city’s existing fleet of 10 mobile speed camera units, which are deployed throughout residential streets and other local roadways.The cameras are part of the city’s Safe Traffic Operations Program, known as STOP, which supports traffic enforcement efforts through automated technology. The Rio Rancho Police Department has utilized automated traffic enforcement tools since 2011.
