Dutton Ranch, Episode 6 Recap:

Let’s start with Beth and Beulah, who jet off for an appointment with Frontier Hospitality Group CEO Zane Nash (real company, fake CEO) to try to sell their bespoke beef model. He’s impressed, and the two women retreat to an upscale bar to celebrate.

Beulah shares pertinent family details that serve to endear Beth (and us) to her. In a lot of ways their stories are similar, and they start to recognize this as each is ordering a third (or fourth or fifth) drink. Things are pretty boozy.

Here are three important takeaways from this late-night palaver:

  1. Rob Will’s father died in an “awful flood” before he was born, and Beulah was forced to raise her son as a single mother.
  2. Joaquin is adopted (we knew this). His father was a 10 Petal ranch hand who ended up on the wrong side of the law.
  3. Beulah suspects Beth’s involvement in Jamie Dutton’s disappearance (Season 5 Yellowstone). “I don’t think about him anymore,” Beth says of her brother.

The first two points help build an important family tree, as new characters will soon be introduced.

Those who’ve followed these reviews know I suspect Joaquin’s father is Mariano, the man pulling Beulah’s puppet strings. He says he’s going to be moving cattle soon, but I suspect he’s pushing drugs, and that syncs with Beulah’s “wrong side of the law” confession.

Takeaway No. 3 adds a drop of poison to the water Beulah and Beth are sharing. The degree to which either woman is sincere in pursuing this partnership is unknown.

Beth’s deflection isn’t helping. Look for the 10 Petal matriarch to keep pushing for information as she looks to leverage the relationship.

A world exists where Beth is arrested for her brother’s murder at the end of Season 1 of Dutton Ranch, but I’m hoping the show steers away from that. Acknowledging old Yellowstone plot lines add depth and intrigue to this show, but rehashing them will only slow things down.

Who Died On Dutton Ranch, Episode 6?

Yellowstone universe shows have always stopped to spotlight authentic cowboy moments. Episode 6 offered this series’ best scenes yet when — after branding calves — the Jackson and Dutton ranches compete in a roping competition.

It’s good fun that also serves to acknowledge a relationship between Azul and several 10 Petal boys. File that (and that Azul’s wife is pregnant) away for later.

As this is happening, Rob Will and Chet (the fired foreman) are plotting an attack. Rob Will tells the former rancher how he appreciates his loyalty and calls him the brother he should have had. It works to gas the young man up, and he chooses to confront Joaquin, who he believes is responsible for his firing.

Chet fires a warning shot and strikes Joaquin in the hand. Just as he’s about to pull the trigger again, he takes a bullet to the head. Miguel (Oreana’s driver and Beulah’s security detail) heard the first shot and raced to rescue his employer. Rip drives up moments later and whisks Joaquin off to the doctor.

The ominous music isn’t over yet. Rip pulls over on a dark stretch of country highway and demands to know who dumped the body (Wes) on his land. Joaquin admits it was his brother, but says Rob Will isn’t coming back. After completing rehab in Sedona, he’ll be shipped to Botswana to lead spoiled princes on elephant hunts.

We’re left wondering whose side Kino is on. He clearly lies to Rip when he says Wes was Rob Will and Chet’s drug dealer. Does he know his brother is free and roaming Rio Paloma?

Then again, his brother’s closest ally just tried to kill him.

Dutton Ranch, Episode 6 Review:

Scenes involving Beth and Beulah and Rip and Joaquin were as compelling as you could hope. Chet’s death came earlier than anyone expected but was no less satisfying. At this point, reference to Jamie Dutton adds intrigue and Rob Will’s revenge plot adds danger.

What made “A Cowboy Saint” the best episode of Dutton Ranch yet, however, is what happened to Carter. It was a small scene that resulted in a cliffhanger most will forget about, but it was an important scene.

His fishing date with Oreana gives him time to reflect on his friendship with Dwight White, who died in Ep. 5. The young man explains why he was drawn to the older rancher, and it’s during this confession we understand the purpose of the relationship and the killing (but not the leopard).

It’s a growth sequence that should inspire action during Ep. 7-9, however a few immature stray hairs remain.

Carter tells Oreana that he loves her. It’s far too early for this kind of confession and she hardly reciprocates. What teenager hasn’t dropped an “L” bomb in similar conditions, however?

The scene ends with Oreana rescued from the awkward moment by a series of text messages that inspire them to race away.
