It was an emotional night at the 2026 ACM Awards on Sunday (May 17), especially for Lauren Alaina.
Alaina was booked to introduce Dan + Shay to sing their new song “Say So” — a deeply personal track about suicide prevention, mental health, and the importance of checking in on loved ones.
“Like too many of you out there, I know what it’s like to lose someone who struggled with their mental health,” the singer said. It was at that point that she broke down in tears.
Alaina composed herself enough to continue her message — with help from the supportive cheering crowd — and turned what could have been a simple PSA into a heartfelt speech that was one of the rawest and most impactful moments of the night.

She took some deep breaths before talking about ACM Lifting Lives, the Academy of Country Music’s charitable arm, which is “dedicated to improving lives through the power of music and harnessing the strength of the country music industry to provide aid to those in need.”
Why Did Lauren Alaina Break Down in Tears at the 2026 ACM Awards?
Lauren Alaina didn’t mention specifically who she was thinking of when she was overcome by tears at the awards show. She did say that she had a personal connection to the late Ben Vaughn, who inspired Dan + Shay’s “Say So.”
Vaughn, who was Dan + Shay’s close friend and mentor as well as head of Warner Chappell Publishing, died by suicide in 2025.

Alaina has also spoken publicly in the past about a couple more tragedies she’s suffered. Among those was the death of her stepfather Sam Ramker, who died in 2018 after a battle with Stage 4 cancer.
But even more poignant for a conversation about mental health might be the death of the singer’s stepfather J.J. Suddeth, who died in July 2024.
- Alaina had previously spoken about Suddeth’s battle with alcohol addiction and journey to sobriety.
- In 2025, she revealed that he relapsed before his death.
- In that same message, she encouraged anyone facing addiction to reach out for support, and suggested that mental health played a factor into her dad’s battle.
