Zozobra time capsule project capturing the legendary tradition

Date:

“They’re very special,” Ken Simington said. “A lot of passion taking place.”Simington is talking about the newest Zozobra time capsules. He said it took three years to capitalize on but it will last for the next century. “The folks in the future, I want them to understand kind of what it was like for us now to put on such a huge event every year,” Kiwanis Club member Clark Carboneau said. With the help of the Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe, local businesses and artists, these time capsules have come to life. Members of the club say they want the community to be a part of history by contributing to these capsules. Clark said, “We really want people’s stories, memories, artifacts, photos to really celebrate the experience of Zozobra.”Welders with The Man of Steel metal shop say they enjoyed the creative process working with Zia Fabrication to create the shape of these capsules. “We were given, you know, pretty free rein on it,” Lee Wright said. “We’d all get together and we’d meet at the shop and just spitball, you know, just go over and over different ideas.”Each time capsule represents a different hair color that the giant portrayed in previous years. There are four in total. The first one will stay closed and buried until 2049, and the last one will not be open until 2124. Artist William Gonzales says he wanted to incorporate New Mexico swag taste into the project.Gonzales said, “I was truly blessed to be a part of this project with everybody else that put in the work and time to build the boxes.”But this is only the start of what people will soon come to know as the Zozobra Monument. All part of an effort to honor the history and legacy of this legendary effigy. You can still be part of this project by sharing your Zozobra photos, collectibles and art. You can drop them at FS2 Supply Co. in Santa Fe.
