Venezuela live updates as Maduro to appear in U.S. court, Trump threatens other nations

What to know about the charges against Maduro and his wife

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges stemming from what prosecutors said was his role in a scheme to import “thousands of tons” of cocaine into the United States and enrich himself, his family and senior members of the Venezuelan government.

The indictment was unsealed Saturday by Attorney General Pam Bondi after Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were taken into military custody in an overnight operation and brought to the U.S. to face criminal charges.

“They will soon face the full wrath of American justice on American soil in American courts,” Bondi said.

Maduro, Flores and four others are named as defendants in the indictment, including Maduro’s son, Nicolás Ernesto Maduro.

Maduro faces four charges: narco-terrorism conspiracy; cocaine importation conspiracy; possession of machineguns and destructive devices; and conspiracy to possess machineguns and destructive devices.

Flores is accused of brokering a meeting between a large-scale drug trafficker and the director of Venezuela’s National Anti-Drug Office and allegedly accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes.

Concern simmers in Cuba after warning

Concern is simmering in Cuba, one of Venezuela’s most important allies and trading partners, after Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a new stern warning to the Cuban government.

Rubio, in an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” said he thinks “they’re in a lot of trouble.”

“I’m not going to talk to you about what our future steps are going to be and our policies are going to be right now in this regard,” Rubio said. “But I don’t think it’s any mystery that we are not big fans of the Cuban regime, who, by the way, are the ones that were propping up Maduro.”

He said Cuban officials were with Maduro in Venezuela ahead of his capture.

“It was Cubans that guarded Maduro,” Rubio said. “He was not guarded by Venezuelan bodyguards. He had Cuban bodyguards.” The secretary of state added that Cuban bodyguards were also in charge of “internal intelligence” in Maduro’s government, including “who spies on who inside, to make sure there are no traitors.

The Cuban government said Sunday that 32 Cubans were killed during the U.S. military operation to capture Maduro.

Mr. Trump said that the Cuban economy, battered by years of a U.S. embargo, is in tatters and will slide further now with the ouster of Maduro, who provided the Caribbean island subsidized oil.

“It’s going down,” Mr. Trump said of Cuba. “It’s going down for the count.”

“That’s enough now!” says Greenland’s prime minister after Trump’s latest threats

“That’s enough now,” Greenland Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen said on social media late Sunday after repeated threats from President Trump to annex the autonomous Danish territory.

“No more pressure. No more insinuations. No more fantasies of annexation. We are open to dialogue. We are open to discussions. But this must happen through the proper channels and with respect for international law,” he wrote.

Since returning to White House a year ago, Mr. Trump has repeatedly claimed that making Greenland part of the United States would serve U.S. national security interests, given its strategic location in the Arctic. Greenland is also rich in key critical minerals used in high-tech sectors.

In an interview with The Atlantic magazine published Sunday, Mr. Trump reiterated his wish to take over Greenland. “We do need Greenland, absolutely. We need it for defense,” he told the magazine.

Sunday night aboard Air Force One, he told reporters, “It’s so strategic right now. Greenland is covered with Russian and Chinese ships all over the place.”

“We need Greenland from the standpoint of national security, and Denmark is not going to be able to do it,” he said.

Trump: U.S. “in charge” of Venezuela, acting leader Delcy Rodriguez cooperating

Speaking with reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday night, President Trump said he has not spoken directly with Venezuela’s acting leader, Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, but said she was cooperating with the U.S.

“We’re in charge” of Venezuela right now, Mr. Trump said,

He said the U.S. had been prepared for further military action in Venezuela but it hadn’t been needed so far, adding that this could change “if they don’t behave.”

The president said he’s spoken with several U.S. oil companies about commitments to rebuilding Venezuela’s infrastructure, saying they “wanna go in so bad.”

Mr. Trump also alluded to possible action against Colombian President Gustavo Petro, saying Colombia is “very sick too, run by a very sick man.” Mr. Trump said he felt Petro is “not going to be doing it for very long,” and when asked if he would carry out a military operation there as well, the president responded, “Sounds good to me.”

Venezuela’s acting leader says nation seeks “peace and peaceful coexistence”

Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, who is serving as acting leader following President Nicolás Maduro’s capture, said in a statement Sunday night that Venezuela seeks “peace and peaceful coexistence.”

“Our country aspires to live without external threats, in an environment of respect and international cooperation,” Rodriguez said. “We believe that global peace is built by guaranteeing the peace of each nation first.”

Rogriguez said she hopes to have a “balanced and respectful” relationship with the U.S. “based on sovereign equality and non-interference.”

“We extend the invitation to the U.S. government to work together on a cooperation agenda, oriented to shared development, within the framework of international legality and strengthen a lasting community coexistence,” she added.

“President Donald Trump: our peoples and our region deserve peace and dialogue, not war.”

Congress to be briefed Monday on Venezuela

Trump administration officials will give some members of Congress a classified briefing on Venezuela at 5:30 p.m. Monday, according to multiple sources.

Those invited include chairs and ranking members from the Senate Foreign Relations, Senate Armed Services, House Foreign Affairs and House Armed Services committees, as well as the so-called Gang of Eight — the chair and ranking member of the House and Senate intelligence committees and the four leaders of the House and Senate.

The briefing is set to be delivered by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Attorney General Pam Bondi, CIA Director John Ratcliffe and Joint Chiefs Chair Gen. Dan Caine, according to an administration official.

Maduro and Flores being held at Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn

Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, being held in different sections of the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, a federal facility with the capacity for holding high-security defendants.

MDC is known for having housed other high-profile defendants including Luigi Mangione, Sean “Diddy” Combs and Ghislaine Maxwell.

Law enforcement sources tell CBS News that Maduro is being held on one of the top floors of MDC. They say he is not being held in isolation, but is being held with other higher profile inmates.

His status likely means protection from the general population, said Marc Fernich, an attorney who represented notorious drug trafficker Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, who was held at a federal jail a few miles away in Manhattan.

“If Maduro is placed in round-the-clock solitary, it will be for his own protection or to guard against suicide,” Fernich said.

He added that the Brooklyn jail currently houses many members of Venezuela’s most well-known transnational gang, Tren de Aragua.

At least 4 Americans still detained in Venezuela

There are at least four detained Americans being held in Venezuela, according to a hostage advocate familiar with the situation. The U.S. government is aware that some Americans who had been detained in Venezuela prior to the holidays remain in custody there.

Asked on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan” about reports of previously detained Americans still being held in Venezuela, Sen. Chris Van Hollen said, “I’ve not gotten an update from the administration on those detained Americans. But certainly, my view is we should work to bring back every American who is wrongfully detained overseas.”

He added: “My view is that the administration should designate as wrongfully detained any Americans that the Venezuelan Government has seized wrongfully.”

Trump says Maduro was “kingpin of a vast criminal network” trafficking drugs into the U.S.

President Trump on Saturday called Maduro an “illegitimate dictator” and alleged he “was the kingpin of a vast criminal network responsible for trafficking colossal amounts of deadly and illicit drugs into the United States.”

In a U.S. military operation that struck Venezuelan military facilities in the early hours of Saturday, Maduro and his wife were captured and flown to the U.S. to face charges.

Mr. Trump said, “Now, Maduro will never again be able to threaten an American citizen or anybody from Venezuela.”

“The dictator and terrorist Maduro is finally gone in Venezuela,” the president said. “People are free.”

Moore has some of the most effortless arm talent you’ll ever see, with a throwing motion taken straight out of a textbook. He’s shown some cracks under pressure this season, but that’s to be expected with his limited experience. If Moore doesn’t declare, the Jets look poised to go the veteran quarterback route, as there’s no one else worthy of reaching for in the top five or even top 20 this year.

Sadiq was born to play tight end for Mike McDaniel for two reasons. The first is that he’s electric after the catch. With a squattier frame than most running backs, he resembles a jumbo running back with the ball in his hands. The other is that Sadiq is a ferocious blocker in space. Paris court finds 10 guilty of cyberbullying France’s first lady Brigitte Macron

0

PARIS — A Paris court found Monday 10 people guilty of cyberbullying France’s first lady Brigitte Macron.

The court convicted all defendants to sentences, ranging from a cyberbullying awareness training to 8-month suspended prison sentences.

The court pointed to “particularly degrading, insulting, and malicious” comments referring to false claims regarding alleged trans identity and alleged pedo criminality targeting Brigitte Macron.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below.

A Paris court is to rule on Monday in a case involving 10 people accused of cyberbullying French first lady Brigitte Macron by spreading false online claims about her gender and sexuality, allegations her daughter said damaged her health and family life.

The defendants, eight men and two women aged 41 to 65, are accused of posting “numerous malicious comments” falsely claiming that President Emmanuel Macron ’s wife was born a man and linking the 24-year age gap with her husband to pedophilia. Some of the posts were viewed tens of thousands of times.

Brigitte Macron did not attend the two-day trial in October. Speaking on TF1 national television Sunday, she said she launched legal proceedings to “set an example” in the fight against harassment.

Her daughter, Tiphaine Auzière, testified about what she described as the “deterioration” of her mother’s life since the online harassment intensified. “She cannot ignore the horrible things said about her,” Auzière told the court. She said the impact has extended to the entire family, including Macron’s grandchildren.

Defendant Delphine Jegousse, 51, who is known as Amandine Roy and describes herself as a medium and an author, is considered to have played a major role in spreading the rumor after she released a four-hour video on her YouTube channel in 2021.

The X account of Aurélien Poirson-Atlan, 41, known as Zoé Sagan on social media, was suspended in 2024 after his name was cited in several judicial investigations.

Other defendants include an elected official, a teacher and a computer scientist. Several told the court their comments were intended as humor or satire and said they did not understand why they were being prosecuted. They face up to two years in prison if convicted.

The case follows years of conspiracy theories falsely alleging that Brigitte Macron was born under the name Jean-Michel Trogneux, which is actually the name of her brother. The Macrons have also filed a defamation suit in the United States against conservative influencer Candace Owens.

The Macrons, who have been married since 2007, first met at the high school where he was a student and she was a teacher. Brigitte Macron, 24 years her husband’s senior, was then called Brigitte Auzière, a married mother of three.

Emmanuel Macron, 48, has been France’s president since 2017.

TRENDING RUMORS

Real Madrid have joined the race for Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, according to AS. The Spanish outlet reports that Madrid have been offered the player, but the transfer fee would need to be worth more than €70 million to land the 21-year-old. Madrid are interested and see the England international as the perfect alternative to Aurélien Tchouaméni in midfield, or to enable Arda Güler to play further forward. However, they aren’t the only ones: Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea are all keen on the Palace midfielder.

Juventus are keen to inject some goals to their forward line in January, and the club have identified Liverpool’s Federico Chiesa and Atletico Madrid’s Alexander Sørloth as two players that could help lift them from their malaise, according to Gazzetta dello Sport. Don’t expect anything imminent, though: Any Chiesa deal will have to wait until Mohamed Salah returns to Liverpool from the Africa Cup of Nations, which could be in mid-January. As such, Al Hilal’s Darwin Núñez could also be considered.

– After a tricky weekend in which their squad depth was tested to the limit away at Cagliari, AC Milan have identified Manchester City defender Nathan Aké as a key January target. Corriere Dello Sport says the Rossoneri consider the Netherlands international as a plug-and-play option, who could be attainable due to his desire to play more first-team football. Other alternatives include Juventus’ defender Federico Gatti and Tottenham Hotspur’s Radu Dragusin.

Tottenham Hotspur are on the hunt for new arrivals to kickstart a season that saw them booed off (again) on Sunday. TEAMtalk says the club are interested in AS Monaco striker Maghnes Akliouche, who has three goals and five assists in all competitions this season. Meanwhile, the Athletic says they have had an £8 million offer turned down by Santos for left back Souza, although it’s quite a lot lower than the 19-year-old’s £87 million release clause for overseas clubs.

Barcelona, Inter Milan and Borussia Dortmund are considering a move for Croatian defender Branimir Mlacic from Hadjuk Split, per Mundo Deportivo. The two-footed center back is contracted until 2029 but would help give Barça boss Hansi Flick the “one more defender” he has asked for. Mlacic is tall and boasts a big presence in the back line, and is reportedly available for around €4 million.

DONE DEALS

Tottenham have confirmed the signing of Norway international midfielder Julie Blakstad, 24, from Hammarby IF.

EXPERT TAKE

ESPN’s resident scout Tor-Kristian Karlsen looks at Adam Wharton’s skillset.

Just 18 months from making his debut, Wharton is now undoubtedly one of the Premier League’s most accomplished distributors of the ball. He constantly asks to receive it and is trusted not to lose possession under pressure. Then, once in control, his pass selection is outstanding: he can hit 35-yard switches with precision, incisive line-breaks through pressure, or well-weighted deliveries played into a teammate’s stride.

The quality of Wharton’s left foot is one standout feature, though it’s also his vision and ability to “map” the play around him that is key, as they allow him to move the ball at tempo with ease and fluidity.

Wharton has also shown he is comfortable in a high-intensity style of football. Under Oliver Glasner at Palace, the England midfielder has performed in an energetic, vertical scheme, where demands on speed of thought and defensive reactions are higher. Though he was impressive last season, he has lifted his key-pass output by roughly 10% this year, while still maintaining accuracy and pass variation. Crucially, the distribution isn’t location-specific either and he is as reliable starting attacks from deep as he is contributing in the final third.

Why Amorim’s comments seem like he wants out of Man United

The ESPN FC panel talk about Ruben Amorim’s post Leeds press conference on his role at Manchester United.

– Barcelona are favorites to sign Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic. The Serbia international’s contract ends in the summer, and so far there are no plans for him to renew. (Sun)

– West Ham United are on the verge of announcing forward Taty Castellanos from Lazio. Nuno Espirito Santo cut a dispirited figure after Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Wolves, but maybe the arrival of Castellanos could help liven the club’s relegation fight. The Argentine is expected to pass a medical, with the fee believed to be in the region of £26 million. (TalkSPORT)

– West Ham are also contemplating a move for Toulouse center back Charlie Cresswell, though there has been no formal contact as yet. The 23-year-old former Leeds defender is contracted until 2028. (Florian Plettenberg)

– Defender João Cancelo is still hoping for a move to Barcelona from Al Hilal, with the Catalan club hoping to bring the Portugal international back to Camp Nou for six months. However, they face FFP restrictions, and have other — arguably more pressing — positions they need to address. Inter remain in the box seat for the 31-year-old. (Gazzetta dello Sport)

– Real Madrid defender and captain Dani Carvajal has received a number of offers from other clubs, both in Spain and beyond, but the 33-year-old is keen to stay in the Spanish capital. He is close to returning from injury and is out of contract in June this year, but Madrid hope to keep him to prevent him from leaving on a free transfer. (AS)

– Fulham have had a bid of £17 million rejected by Udinese for defensive midfielder Arthur Atta. The 22-year-old only joined the Italians last summer, and it would take a bid in excess of £26 million for them to consider letting him go so soon. (TalkSPORT)

– Bournemouth and Fiorentina are interested in signing Atalanta’s 25-year-old midfielder Marco Brescianini. However, they face competition from Cagliari and Genoa who are also keen. (Calciomercato)

– Manchester City center back Jahmai Simpson-Pusey — on loan at Celtic — has agreed to join German side FC Koln on loan. The 20-year-old will head to the Bundesliga initially on a short-term basis, with a permanent option. (TalkSPORT)

– Tottenham boss Thomas Frank is keen to add attacking options to his front line, and on his wish list is Club Brugge winger Christos Tzolis. The Belgian club are looking to recoup £35 million for a player who scored 21 goals last season. (Sun)

– Eintracht Frankfurt are hoping to sign a new striker, and have identified Newcastle United’s 22-year-old William Osula as the perfect antidote to combat their list of attacking injuries. Negotiations are ongoing. (Florian Plettenberg)

– Fenerbahce are also keen on signing striker Christopher Nkunku despite the 28-year-old France international only joining AC Milan for €35 million in the summer from Chelsea. Nkunku would prefer to stay in the Italian capital. (Gazzetta dello Sport)

– Girona know that signing goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen from Barcelona could be challenging, but they’re prepared to wait until the end of January for the 33-year-old. The goalkeeper is keen to explore all of his options at Barca first before loan options elsewhere, but he could be available late in the window. (Sport)

Brahim Díaz is on the verge of signing a contract extension at Real Madrid until 2030. The Morocco international winger’s deal runs out in 2027. (Nico Schira)

South Korean movie star Ahn Sung-ki dies at 74

Ahn Sung-ki, one of South Korean cinema’s biggest stars whose prolific 60-year career and positive, gentle public image earned him the nickname “The Nation’s Actor,” died Monday. He was 74.The death of Ahn, who had been had blood cancer for years, was announced by his agency, the Artist Company, and the Seoul-based Soonchunhyang University Hospital.”We feel deep sorrow at the sudden, sad news, pray for the eternal rest of the deceased and offer our heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family members,” the Artist Company said in a statement. Born to a filmmaker in the southeastern city of Daegu in 1952, Ahn made his debut as a child actor in the movie “The Twilight Train” in 1957. He subsequently appeared in about 70 movies as a child actor before he left the film industry to live an ordinary life. In 1970, Ahn entered Seoul’s Hankuk University of Foreign Studies as a Vietnamese major. Ahn said he graduated with top honors but failed to land jobs at big companies, who likely saw his Vietnamese major largely useless after a communist victory in the Vietnam War in 1975.After spending a few years unemployed, Ahn returned to the film industry in 1977 believing he could still excel in acting. In 1980, he rose to fame for his lead role in Lee Jang-ho’s “Good, Windy Days,” a hit coming-of-age movie about the struggle of working-class men from rural areas during the country’s rapid rise. Ahn won the best new actor award in the prestigious Grand Bell Awards, the Korean version of the Academy Awards. He later starred in a series of highly successful and critically acclaimed movies, sweeping best actor awards and becoming arguably the country’s most popular actor in much of the 1980-90s.Some of his memorable roles included a Buddhist monk in 1981’s “Mandara,” a beggar in 1984’s “Whale Hunting,” a Vietnam War veteran-turned-novelist in 1992’s “White Badge,” a corrupt police officer in 1993’s “Two Cops,” a murderer in 1999’s “No Where To Hide,” a special forces trainer in 2003’s “Silmido” and a devoted celebrity manager in 2006’s “Radio Star.”Ahn had collected dozens of trophies in major movie awards in South Korea, including winning the Grand Bell Awards for best actor five times, an achievement no other South Korean actors have matched yet. Ahn built up an image as a humble, trustworthy and family-oriented celebrity who avoided major scandals and maintained a quiet, stable personal life. Past public surveys chose Ahn as South Korea’s most beloved actor and deserving of the nickname “The Nation’s Actor.” Ahn said he earlier felt confined with his “The Nation’s Actor” labeling but eventually thought that led him down the right path. In recent years, local media has given other stars similar honorable nicknames, but Ahn was apparently the first South Korean actor who was dubbed as “The Nation’s Actor.” “I felt I should do something that could match that title. But I think that has eventually guided me on a good direction,” Ahn said in an interview with Yonhap news agency in 2023.In media interviews, Ahn couldn’t choose what his favorite movie was, but said that his role as a dedicated, hardworking manger for a washed-up rock singer played by Park Jung-hoon resembled himself in real life the most. Ahn was also known for his reluctance to do love scenes. He said said he was too shy to act romantic scenes and sometimes asked directors to skip steamy scenes if they were only meant to add spice to movies.”I don’t do well on acting like looking at someone who I don’t love with loving eyes and kissing really romantically. I feel shy and can’t express such emotions well,” Ahn said in an interview with the Shindonga magazine in 2007. “Simply, I’m clumsy on that. So I couldn’t star in such movies a lot. But ultimately, that was a right choice for me.”Ahn is survived by his wife and their two sons. A mourning station at a Seoul hospital was to run until Friday.

Mike Tomlin ties Steelers Hall of Fame coach Chuck Noll on all-time career wins list

0

Mike Tomlin now stands alongside a fellow Pittsburgh Steelers coach in the NFL record book.

By virtue of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ thrilling Week 18 win over the Baltimore Ravens, Tomlin is now tied with Hall of Fame coach Chuck Noll on the all-time regular season wins list. Tomlin and Noll are tied for ninth all-time with 193 regular-season wins. Tomlin’s 193 win was also special in that it came in a game that saw the Steelers capture the AFC North division title and a spot in the AFC playoffs.

“I’m appreciative of some of those things,” Tomlin recently said when asked about some of his recent career milestones. “It’s been a blessing, but really of no relevance as I stand here today leaning in on this Cleveland Browns opportunity this week. There are just so many people in this collective that it doesn’t apply to, and with football being what it is, the ultimate team game, I better display that focus.”

Two weeks ago, Tomlin increased his NFL record of most consecutive non-losing seasons to begin a career, which is now at 19. He’s one season off Tom Landry’s record for the most consecutive non-losing seasons in NFL history.

As far as coaching icons are concerned, it doesn’t get much bigger than Noll, who in just five years time turned the Steelers from a 1-13 outfit into Super Bowl champions. During the 1970s, Noll’s Steelers became the first team to win four Super Bowls. Pittsburgh remains the only team to win back-to-back Super Bowls twice and four Super Bowls over a six-year span.

Noll was first and foremost a teacher who preached fundamentals to his teams. A former offensive lineman, Noll’s expertise in that area helped birth one of Pittsburgh’s go from a power running team to a big-play passing attack in the middle of their dynasty after the league had made rules to help open up the passing game.

It took a while, but Noll ultimately developed a successful partnership with Terry Bradshaw, the last Steelers’ player to win league MVP. Their working relationship undoubtedly played a big role in Bradshaw not only becoming a Hall of Fame player, but a successful play-caller in Pittsburgh’s huddle.

Now in his 19th season, Tomlin has continued Pittsburgh’s legacy of success that was started by Noll over 50 years ago. He will look to help lead the Steelers to their first playoff win since 2016 when Pittsburgh hosts the Texans next Monday night in the AFC wild-card round.
