Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen shot back at President Donald Trump’s renewed threats to take over the self-governing, resource-rich territory, which is part of Denmark, a day after U.S. forces ousted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro from power.

As Delcy Rodríguez is sworn in as Venezuela’s interim president, who is Nicolás Maduro’s former No. 2?

0

Delcy Rodríguez was sworn in early Monday as Venezuela’s new interim president while her predecessor Nicolás Maduro awaited arraignment in a federal U.S. court on drug smuggling charges, two days after he was captured in Caracas by American special forces.

Rodríguez, 56, is a powerful figure and longtime confidant of Maduro, and she has been backed thus far as the nation’s new leader by Venezuela’s military. She served as Venezuela’s vice president from 2018 until Sunday. Her brother also holds a senior role in the government as president of the National Assembly, Venezuela’s legislature, which has long been controlled by the Maduro regime.

She quickly denounced the U.S. operation as a violation of the United Nations founding charter and a unilateral attempt to force regime change on Saturday, but soon adopted a more conciliatory tone.

In a social media post following a Cabinet meeting on Sunday, Rodríguez called for “respectful international relations” between Caracas and Washington and extended an invite for “the U.S. government to collaborate with us on an agenda of cooperation.”

Venezuela’s roughly 30 million people face a deeply uncertain future in the wake of President Trump’s actions. It was still unclear on Monday how much autonomy Washington will allow the country, given Mr. Trump’s assertion that America will “run” Venezuela, at least for some time.

Will the U.S. work with Rodríguez?

Mr. Trump said Saturday that the U.S. had been in contact with Rodríguez and “she’s essentially willing to do what we think is necessary to make Venezuela great again.”

But in an interview with The Atlantic published on Sunday, he added a warning.

“If she doesn’t do what’s right, she is going to pay a very big price, probably bigger than Maduro,” Mr. Trump said.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated in a Sunday interview on CBS News’ “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan” that the U.S. was willing to give Rodríguez a chance.

“We are going to make our assessments of people,” he told Brennan of the remaining Maduro regime figures still in place. “We’re going to make an assessment on the basis of what they do, not what they say publicly in the interim, not what, you know, some of what they’ve done in the past in many cases, but what they do moving forward.”

Speaking on ABC’s “This Week” the same day, Rubio reiterated, however, that the Trump administration does not consider Rodríguez or any of her cohorts to have any legitimate claim to power in the country.

“This is not about the legitimate president. We don’t believe that this regime in place is legitimate via an election,” Rubio told ABC.

“Ultimately, legitimacy for their system of government will come about through a period of transition and real elections,” he continued. “It’s the reason why Maduro is not just an indicted drug trafficker — he [was an] illegitimate president. He was not the head of state.”

Delcy Rodríguez’s rise to power in Venezuela

Rodríguez was born in Caracas. Her father was Jorge Antonio Rodríguez, a prominent leader of the country’s socialist movement that would go on to take power under Maduro’s predecessor, Hugo Chavez. The new president’s father, however, helped lead the movement before it seized power, and he was arrested for involvement in the kidnapping of American businessman William Niehous in 1976.

He died in police custody, reportedly as he was tortured by the previous Venezuelan regime’s security forces.

His daughter Delcy would go on to study law at the Central University of Venezuela, in Caracas, with further periods of education in Britain and France.

Rodríguez held a number of positions during Chávez’s long reign, but she only rose to real prominence under Maduro. From 2013 to 2014, she served as Minister of Popular Power for Communication and Information before being appointed as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, a title she held from 2014 to 2017.

She also presided over an assembly created in response to mass street protests in 2017, which was widely seen as an attempt to sideline the opposition-controlled National Assembly, Venezuela’s legislature, to enable Maduro to consolidate his rule.

In 2018, Maduro appointed her as Venezuela’s vice president, and she remained in that post until stepping in to replace her former boss, as ordered by the country’s supreme court following the dramatic events of the weekend.

In 2020 Rodríguez was also appointed as her country’s Minister of Economy and Finance, where she’s credited with helping to achieve some progress toward stabilizing Venezuela’s sanctions-wracked economy after years of soaring inflation.

In 2024, the role of Minister of Petroleum was also added to her resume.

Despite her very high profile role in the Maduro regime, however, Rodríguez has not been indicted on any criminal charges in the U.S., though she was hit with sanctions imposed during President Trump’s first term, for her role in helping Maduro “maintain power and solidify his authoritarian rule.”

HAKEN Part Ways With Longtime Members CHARLIE GRIFFITHS & CONNER GREEN

0

Haken have confirmed a significant shake-up in their lineup, revealing that longtime guitarist Charlie Griffiths and bassist Conner Green are no longer members of the band.

“It’s with heavy hearts that we announce the departure of Charlie Griffiths and Conner Green from Haken,” the band shared on their social media channels. “We are tremendously grateful for the time we’ve spent together, creating music and touring the world, achieving things we thought weren’t possible.

“Both Charlie and Conner are irreplaceable, as musicians and individuals, and they have given so much to make this band what it is today. We cannot thank them enough, but we wish them all the best with any future endeavours. They will always be a part of the Haken family. New music coming this year.”

Griffiths has been part of Haken since 2008, helping shape the band’s sound across their studio releases while also branching out with his solo project Tiktaalika. Green joined later, coming in during 2014 after original bassist Thomas MacLean departed, and became a defining presence in the band’s more recent era.

The announcement comes after a stretch of uncertainty around Haken’s recent plans, including a cancelled Euroblast Festival appearance and the band stepping away from scheduled dates with Coheed and Cambria.

At this point, no further information has been shared as to whether the promised new music will include any new collaborators or band members.

Man United must go big with next manager after firing Amorim

0

It’s tough to hire a new Manchester United manager is . It has become an impossible job to fill the impossible job, and for the seventh time since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in May 2013, the Premier League’s biggest club is in the market for a new coach following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal on Monday morning.

They say this inside Old Trafford every time the manager’s office is cleared out for a new appointment, but they really need to get it right this time.

United must go big. It is time for one of the most powerful clubs in the world to hire a manager who has the experience, the track record, Premier League credentials and the personality to make managing the club seem like a privilege rather than a burden.

OUT! Amorim sacked as Man United head coach
Every time Ruben Amorim talked about his Man United job
Stats expose Amorim’s bleak reign at Man United

Whether they are prepared to wait for a manager like Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino or Carlo Ancelotti until after the World Cup, or instead gamble now on someone like Oliver Glasner, Kieran McKenna or Gareth Southgate remains to be seen. Sources have told ESPN that, right now, there is no clear plan of whether to appoint a new man quickly, or play the long game and leave Darren Fletcher in interim charge until the summer.

But the mistakes of the past and the lessons learned from the failed appointments of David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Erik ten Hag and Amorim must now lead United to a manager / coach who can do what each of those were unable, or ill-equipped, to do: handle the pressure, play exciting football and, most importantly, win.

“When you consider each of the managers we appointed post-Sir Alex, they all had some kind of personality flaw,” a United source told ESPN. “They were either too cautious, too inflexible, too combative or simply not up to it, but if you rolled them all into one, you might end up with somebody who ticked all the boxes.”

Was the Man United job ‘too big’ for Ruben Amorim?

Julien Laurens explains what went wrong for Ruben Amorim at Manchester United after being sacked following 14 months at the club.

Amorim, just 39 years old when Man United recruited him from Sporting CP in November of 2024, was the rising star in European coaching at the time. He had charisma, confidence, a winning track record and it was a coup for United to tempt him to Old Trafford. He had guided Sporting to two domestic titles, breaking the Benfica-Porto stranglehold on the Portuguese game in doing so, and had been high on the lists of Liverpool and Barcelona during their own search for a new coach less than six months earlier.

But despite all of the positives that appeared to come with the Amorim appointment, he quickly proved to be out of his depth. Sources have told ESPN that Amorim was “too stubborn and too immature” to cope with the demands of the job, and having told the club he would be “flexible” and “evolve” his favoured 3-4-3 formation, ultimately refused to be more pragmatic until it was too late.

So after just 14 months, the “next big thing” has ended up on the United scrapheap like the rest of his post-Ferguson predecessors. And once again, United have paid the price for hiring a coach who just didn’t have the credentials for the job.

One source has told ESPN that United is an “extrovert club managed by introverts” and from the perspective of the man sat in the dug-out, it is a valid observation. Amorim and Ten Hag both struggled with the weight of the job, bristling repeatedly at the noise generated by legendary former players, including Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Roy Keane, now employed as high-profile pundits.

Solskjaer was less thin-skinned, but he lacked the presence and personality of a top club manager. Moyes, who lasted just 10 months in charge as Ferguson’s hand-picked successor, was over-sensitive to criticism and too inhibited by his role to have any hope of excelling.

Van Gaal steadied the ship after Moyes, but like Amorim, he lost the faith of the players, fans and his bosses by proving too wedded to a negative, unattractive style of play that brought limited results. It was only Mourinho, hired to replace Van Gaal in 2016, who had the credentials to be a United manager, but unfortunately for the club, the self-styled Special One was no longer special when he arrived at Old Trafford. Right guy, just five years too late.

Who could become Amorim’s successor at Manchester United?

Gab Marcotti and Julien Laurens assess the managerial options available for Manchester United after sacking Ruben Amorim.

Sources have told ESPN that senior figures at United had recommended Pochettino for the job in 2016 only for the Glazer family, the club’s majority owners, to pick Mourinho due to his track record and personality. The Glazers will definitely give input this time, with co-chairman Joel Glazer having his say alongside minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox.

The big question is which direction that group will take. Will it be a head coach working in tandem with the director of football, or a more traditional manager with the authority to lead the team and the club?

Ferguson would often say that the biggest personality at any club had to be the manager and that is even more the case at United. It is an alpha football club, but with nobody fitting that description in the manager’s office or above him. And that’s what United need now: somebody with the ego and the credentials to handle the noise, the former players and the demand for results and stylish football.

Nobody has done that since Ferguson, and the time is now for that to change.

Tim Walz, Democrats’ 2024 VP candidate, won’t run for third term as Minnesota governor

Less than *** year away from election day, *** slate of Republicans are aiming to take the state’s top job from DFL Governor Tim Walls. The two-time incumbent is facing scrutiny over fraud in state programs. The state has taken *** hit in terms of reputation, but Governor Waltz’s reputation has also taken *** hit, and that’s going to be defining his running for *** third term. David Schultz is *** professor of political science at Hamlin University. We’re going to probably see Waltz talking all about what about guns, about Donald Trump, the Republicans talking all about Waltz and fraud. Speaker of the House Lisa Damith, Dr. Scott Jensen, Army veteran Kendall Quals, and State Representative Kristen Robbins among several Republicans running to replace walls. There is *** recipe here for the Republicans to be able to win, but they need to come up with the right candidate also. It’s been nearly two decades since *** won *** statewide office in Minnesota on Monday. 5 Minnesota GOP lawmakers called on the governor to resign, saying this is not about politics or stunts, and we do not make *** call like this lightly. The office of the governor deserves respect, and we have tried to give Governor Walls time to act. Speaker Damith critical but stopping short of calling for his resignation. To have *** governor in his second term that has allowed this to go on. Under his watch, under his administration for this long, taxpayers are fed up with this. The governor’s team responded, saying in part he has strengthened oversight, hired an outside firm to audit payments to high risk programs, and supported criminal prosecutions. Still, Schultz believes this issue is rewriting the governor’s record. He’s got *** major, major problem in terms of changing the narrative and changing his identity.

Syrian and Israeli officials set to resume US-mediated talks in Paris

0

BEIRUT — Syrian and Israeli officials are set to resume U.S.-mediated talks in Paris in hopes of reaching a security agreement to defuse tensions between the two countries, a Syrian official said Monday.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly, told The Associated Press that the delegation on the Syrian side will be headed by Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani and the head of the General Intelligence Directorate, Hussein Salameh.

The official said Syria’s main aim in the talks is to reactivate a 1974 disengagement agreement that established a U.N.-patrolled buffer zone in southern Syria and to secure the withdrawal of Israeli forces, who seized control of that buffer zone more than a year ago.

In December 2024, insurgents led by Syria’s now-interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa ousted the country’s longtime autocratic leader, Bashar Assad, in a lightning offensive.

Al-Sharaa said he has no desire for a conflict with Israel. But Israel was suspicious of the new Islamist-led leadership and quickly moved to take control of the buffer zone. It has launched hundreds of airstrikes on Syrian military facilities and periodic incursions into villages outside the buffer zone, which have sometimes led to violent confrontations with residents.

Israel has said its presence is temporary to clear out pro-Assad remnants and militants in order to protect Israel from attacks. But it has given no indication its forces would leave anytime soon. Talks between the two countries to reach a security agreement had stalled last year.

In the new round of discussions, the Syrian official said, Damascus will seek “the withdrawal of Israeli forces to the lines prior to Dec. 8, 2024, within the framework of a reciprocal security agreement that prioritizes full Syrian sovereignty and guarantees the prevention of any form of interference in the country’s internal affairs.”

Israeli officials did not respond to requests for comment. A spokesperson for U.S. envoy to Syria Tom Barrack declined to comment.

Jelly Roll Reveals the Lie He Tells Kids About His Face Tattoos

0

Jelly Roll was a guest on Taste of Country Nights where I asked him what it was like taking his kids to school back in the day, with all of his face tattoos.

As I finished asking the question, he lit up with that one-of-a-kind smile that only he has, and began to tell a hilarious story from when his daughter, Bailee, went to kindergarten.

“When she was in kindergarten it was so funny because all of her little friends would go ‘What is all that stuff on your face?’ Jelly continued, “I would go ‘You won’t believe this, I only draw this on when I come see y’all so y’all are excited about it.'”

The dubious story kept getting deeper and deeper for the country hitmaker.

Jelly said that as those same friends of his daughter’s got older and older, some of their parents started to not let them hang out at their house due to the face tattoos and the lifestyle that they assumed it brought.
