Uganda’s security forces are accused of using violence against the opposition

0

WAKISO, Uganda — The Ugandan presidential candidate known as Bobi Wine wears a flak jacket and helmet while campaigning to protect himself from gunfire. But the safety gear offers no protection from the stinging clouds of tear gas that often follow him on the campaign trail.

Wine is challenging President Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled Uganda since 1986 by repeatedly rewriting the rules to stay in power. Term and age limits have been scrapped, rivals jailed or sidelined, and state security forces are a constant presence at opposition rallies as Museveni seeks a seventh term in elections on Jan. 15.

Wine, a musician-turned-politician whose real name is Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, faced similar setbacks in 2021, when he first ran for president. He was often roughed up by the police, clothes ripped from his body, and dozens of his supporters were jailed.

In a recent interview with The Associated Press, he charged that this time “the military has largely taken over the election” and that at least three of his supporters have been killed in violent campaign events.

“It has been very violent. There’s been a lot of impunity to the extent that we are denied the right to use the public roads,” he said. “We are hounded by security and followed by over 40 police and military cars. Everywhere I go to campaign, (the) day before, the military comes, beats up people, intimidates them, warns them against attending the rallies I address.”

The human rights group Amnesty International says the use of tear gas, pepper spray, beatings and other acts of violence amount to “a brutal campaign of repression” ahead of the vote.

In a New Year’s Eve address, the president said he recommended that the security forces use more tear gas to break up crowds of what he called “the criminal opposition.”

“Using tear gas for rioters is both legal and non-lethal,” Museveni said in a televised speech. “It doesn’t kill. It is much better than using live bullets.”

Security forces, notably the military, have repeatedly broken up Wine’s campaign rallies, sending his supporters scampering into ditches and swamps.

Critics note that Museveni, in contrast, campaigns without disruption and can go wherever he wants. Some charge that the election is simply a ritual to keep Museveni in power, not a fair exercise that could possibly lead to a change of government in the east African nation of 45 million.

Wine, the most prominent of seven opposition candidates, has urged supporters to show courage before the security forces, although he has not called outright for protests. He said he wants his supporters to cast “protest votes” in large numbers against Museveni’s party on election day.

In his interview with the AP, Wine cited at least three deaths at his rallies, including a man shot by the military and another run over by a military truck. The offenses can go unpunished because the electoral authorities, the police and the army “serve the sitting government,” he said. Police spokesman Kituuma Rusoke said he was not aware of the alleged incidents.

Museveni is the third-longest-serving leader in Africa. Now he seeks to extend his rule into a fifth decade.

He first took power by force as the leader of a guerrilla army that said it wanted to restore democracy after a period of civil war and the cruel dictatorship of Idi Amin.

Decades ago, Museveni criticized African leaders who overstayed their time in power. Years later, Ugandan lawmakers did the same thing for him when they jettisoned the last constitutional obstacle — age limits — for a possible life presidency.

His son, army chief Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has asserted his wish to succeed his father, raising fears of hereditary rule as Museveni has no recognizable successor in the upper ranks of the ruling party, the National Resistance Movement.

Museveni has been elected six times, nearly all of those polls marred by violence and allegations of vote rigging. He has since fallen out with many of the comrades who fought alongside him, including some who say he betrayed the ideals of their bush-war struggle. One of them is Kizza Besigye, once Museveni’s personal doctor, who has been jailed for over a year and repeatedly denied bail after facing treason charges.

Besigye was Uganda’s most prominent opposition leader before the rise of Wine, 43, who presents a different challenge for Museveni as the face of youthful hope for change. Wine has a large following among working-class people in urban areas, and his party has the most seats of any opposition party in Parliament.

In the 2021 election, Wine secured 35% of the vote, while Museveni, with 58%, posted his worst-ever result, establishing Wine as a serious challenger for power.

Yet Museveni dismisses Wine as an agent of foreign interests and questions his patriotism. “Mr. Kyagulanyi and his evil foreigners that back him fail to understand that Uganda is a land of spiritual and political martyrs,” Museveni said in his New Year’s Eve address.

Sarah Bireete, a government critic who runs the non-governmental group Center for Constitutional Governance, was arrested last week and criminally charged over allegations she unlawfully shared data related to the national voters’ registry. The charges are yet to be substantiated.

A magistrate remanded her to jail until Jan. 21, a decision that drew condemnation from some civic leaders as politically motivated because it silenced Bireete’s work as a commentator ahead of voting.

Before her arrest, Bireete had told the AP that Museveni’s Uganda was “a military dictatorship,” not a democracy.

“The evidence is out for everyone to see that indeed Uganda can no longer claim to be a constitutional democracy,” she said.

Uganda has not witnessed a peaceful transfer of presidential power since independence from colonial rule six decades ago. That raises the stakes as an aging Museveni increasingly depends on a security apparatus helmed by his son, Gen. Kainerugaba.

Kainerugaba has warned force could be used against Wine, including threatening to behead him in one of several tweets widely condemned as reckless a year ago.

Museveni “can’t credibly claim to oppose repressive tactics that his own administration has employed for years,” said Gerald Bareebe, a Ugandan who is an associate professor of politics at Canada’s York University, speaking of Museveni’s advice to the security forces.

Bareebe pointed out that some within Museveni’s party think the security forces have gone too far. Even they “are outraged by the brutal tactics employed by the police and military against innocent civilians,” he said.

Jelly Roll Will Be a Judge on the Netflix Reboot of ‘Star Search’

0

When Netflix rolls out their new version of Star Search, we’ll see a familiar face at the judges table — Jelly Roll!

The country singer has been announced as one of the judges for the rebooted edition of the beloved talent competition series.

Who Are the Judges on Star Search?

In addition to Jelly Roll, actress Sarah Michelle Gellar and television personality Chrissy Teigen will also be seated at the judges table. Actor Anthony Anderson rounds out the show’s cast as he is set to host the reboot.

What Is Star Search?

Back before American Idol produced talent like Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, the nation would tune in to watch various talented people compete for stardom.

The show was more than just a singing competition. Oh, there were singers, including Britney Spears, Usher, Beyonce and Christina Aguilera. However, there were other talents such as comedians Adam Sandler and Conan O’Brien.

Stars in the Making: Country Singers Who Got Their Start on Star Search

Star Search was a chance for singers, comedians and even models to get noticed and hopefully become a household name one day.

“The show that launched the greatest stars of our time is back,” Anderson says in a trailer for the new edition.

Jelly Roll and Reality Singing Shows Have a History

Although Jelly Roll never competed on a reality singing competition series, he is familiar with how they work behind the scenes. The country singer was a guest mentor on American Idol for Season 22.

He was such a hit with the contestants and fans alike, the show made him the first-ever Artist in Residence for Season 23. The “Heart of Stone” singer mentored Idol hopefuls for several weeks on their journey throughout the show.

How to Watch the New Star Search

The reboot of Star Search will be available to stream on Netflix beginning Tuesday, Jan. 20. Who knows if the next big name in country music will be on this season?

Country Singers You Forgot Were On ‘Star Search’

Star Search was a television sensation back in the day. The show produced many notable talents in music, comedy and more over the years.

Country music is no different. From LeAnn Rimes to Phil Vassar and more, Star Search found some real diamonds in the rough.

A’s denied ‘Athletics’ trademarks ahead of move to Las Vegas

0

LAS VEGAS — The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has denied the A’s request to trademark the names “Las Vegas Athletics” and “Vegas Athletics.”

The club, which intends to move to Nevada in 2028, has three months from when the refusals were issued Dec. 29 to ask for an extension to file a new application within a six-month period.

The A’s were told the nickname “Athletics” was too generic and could be confused with other activities even if associated with Las Vegas.

That, however, has been the club’s nickname since the Philadelphia Athletics began playing in 1901. The A’s kept the nickname when they moved to Kansas City in 1955 and Oakland in 1968.

The Patent and Trademark Office denied the NHL’s Utah team to use the nickname “Yetis” on Jan. 9 because of potential confusion with companies such as Yeti Coolers. Utah, which moved from the Phoenix area in 2024, now uses the nickname “Mammoth.”

The A’s relocated to West Sacramento, California, last year to play the first of three planned seasons in the city’s Triple-A ballpark. The team is going solely by “Athletics” while playing in the Northern California city.

A $2 billion, 33,000-capacity stadium on the Las Vegas Strip is under construction. Club officials told the Las Vegas Stadium Authority on Dec. 4 that the ballpark is on schedule to open in time for the 2028 season.

Nevada and Clark County have approved up to $380 million in public funds for the ballpark, and the A’s have said they would cover the remaining expenses. Owner John Fisher has been seeking investors to assist in the funding.

In preparing for the move to Las Vegas, the A’s have signed some notable player contracts. The most recent was an $86 million, seven-year deal for left fielder Tyler Soderstrom, the richest in team history. Soderstrom signed his contract Dec. 30 at the A’s Experience Center in Las Vegas.

The A’s acquired second baseman Jeff McNeil from the New York Mets on Dec. 22.

Going back to last offseason, the A’s also reached agreements on a $60 million, five-year contract with designated hitter/outfielder Brent Rooker and a $65.5 million, seven-year deal with outfielder Lawrence Butler. Manager Mark Kotsay signed an extension that takes him through 2028 with a club option for 2029.

New Mexico lawmakers propose bills to regulate AI and combat deepfakes

FEDERAL OFFICIALS SAY INSURANCE WILL CONTINUE TO COVER THESE SHOTS. NEW MEXICO IS SEEING RECORD BREAKING HEALTH INSURANCE ENROLLMENT THIS YEAR, DESPITE THE EXPIRATION OF SOME FEDERAL SUBSIDIES. MORE THAN 81,000 NEW MEXICANS, INCLUDING MORE THAN 9000 NEW CUSTOMERS, HAVE SIGNED UP FOR MEDICAL OR DENTAL COVERAGE THROUGH THE STATE’S BE WELL MARKETPLACE. THAT’S NEARLY 10,000 MORE THAN LAST YEAR’S RECORD. ENROLLMENT IS OPEN THROUGH JANUARY 15TH. AI, OR ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IS NOT AROUND THE CORNER. IT’S HERE. AND WITH SO MUCH UNCHARTED TERRITORY WHEN IT COMES TO ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, NEW MEXICO LAWMAKERS ARE ALREADY FILING BILLS TO HELP REGULATE AI. JASON MCNABB JOINS US WITH THE DETAILS. AI CONTINUES TO SEE A MASSIVE BOOM IN OUR SOCIETY, AND WITH IT COMES ISSUES OF PRIVACY, INACCURACIES, AND ITS POTENTIAL TO BE USED BY BAD ACTORS. PROPOSED HOUSE BILLS LOOK TO ADDRESS THIS GENERATIVE AI APPS LIKE CHATGPT AND SORA CAN MAKE IT LOOK LIKE I’VE DONE THINGS I’VE NEVER DONE AND MET PEOPLE I’VE NEVER MET. FOR INSTANCE, I’VE NEVER MET PRESIDENT TRUMP OR FORMER PRESIDENT BIDEN. BUT HERE I AM, SHAKING BOTH OF THEIR HANDS. OBVIOUSLY, THIS NEVER HAPPENED. I’VE ALSO NEVER RIDDEN A CAMEL OUT IN THE SAHARAN DESERT IN A SUIT. YET HERE I AM. ALL RIGHT, HERE WE GO. I’M IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DESERT, WEARING A FULL SUIT AND RIDING A CAMEL AGAIN. THIS NEVER HAPPENED, BUT IT COULD GET WORSE. LIKE THIS FAKE MUGSHOT OF ME GETTING BOOKED INTO M-D-C. FOR THE RECORD, THIS NEVER HAPPENED EITHER. HOWEVER, YOU CAN START TO SEE HOW FAKE IMAGES LIKE THESE COULD CAUSE A PERSON A LOT OF REPUTATIONAL DAMAGE, ESPECIALLY WHEN SEX AND NUDITY ARE INVOLVED. THESE IMAGES ARE NOW BEING USED AND THEY’RE BEING USED TO THREATEN PEOPLE AND TO LEVERAGE PEOPLE, FRANKLY. AND WE NEED TO PUT A STOP TO THAT. STATE REPRESENTATIVE CHRISTINE CHANDLER IS PROPOSING NEW RULES FOR SENSITIVE DEEPFAKE IMAGES. CHANDLER IS CONFIDENT THE BILL WILL RECEIVE BIPARTISAN SUPPORT. LOOK, THIS IS A VICTIMS SUPPORT BILL. REALLY, IT’S AN INVASION OF PRIVACY BILL. BUT PEOPLE WHO ARE THE OBJECT OF THESE, YOU KNOW, THREATS AND SCAMS ARE VICTIMS, YOU KNOW, AND THEY ARE BEING PORTRAYED IN WAYS THAT ARE INTENDED TO CAUSE EMOTIONAL STRESS AND EMBARRASSMENT. A SIMILAR BILL WAS INTRODUCED LATE DURING LAST YEAR’S SESSION, BUT DIDN’T GAIN ENOUGH TRACTION. REPRESENTATIVE CHANDLER HAS HIGHER HOPES THIS YEAR. Artificial intelligence is now a present reality, prompting New Mexico lawmakers to propose bills aimed at regulating its use and addressing the challenges it presents. House Bill 22, introduced by Rep. Christine Chandler, seeks to establish rules for sharing certain generative AI images and content. Chandler emphasized the urgency of the matter, stating, “This year we’re, we’re going full throttle and with the aim of getting it passed.”Generative AI applications, such as ChatGPT and Sora, can create images that falsely depict individuals in various scenarios, potentially causing significant reputational damage. Chandler highlighted the dangers of intimate deepfakes, which involve manipulated images of nudity and sexual content, saying, “Intimate pictures, nudity, you know, the things that any reasonable person would find offensive if it was done to them. And we know that, unfortunately, in our society, these images are now being used, and they’re being used to threaten people and to leverage people.”The proposed bill would classify the distribution of intimate deepfakes as a petty misdemeanor and grant victims the right to sue. Chris Moore, an AI expert from the Santa Fe Institute, supports the need for such legislation, noting, “Obviously, there’s a lot of money flowing into it, and there are a lot of political and corporate leaders in the country saying don’t regulate us because we want to win the race with China. Which, you know, in some areas, I understand that, but maybe not in deep fake porn.”In addition to addressing deepfakes, Chandler is proposing another bill, House Bill 28, that would allow individuals to appeal AI-based decisions in employment processes and require chatbots to intermittently remind users that they are not interacting with a real human. Moore pointed out that while detecting AI content has become more challenging, inconsistencies in lighting and overly perfect or cinematic appearances can still be indicators.

COALESCE Announces The Departure Of JES STEINEGER Via A Statement From Roadburn Fest

0

Rather simply put, “Coalesce has parted ways with their guitarist,” Jes Steineger after a Reddit post went viral in which a previous student of Steineger described an inappropriate relationship with her former professor.

Originally stating that “a member of this band taught at my university and was separated from the school after his misconduct toward me,” in the post, the Reddit user went on to detail the following in the deleted post (screenshots of the post below):

“band referenced is coalesce

I deleted my original post because truthfully it was too long and too emotional. I was getting a lot of backlash because of those things. However, I got a few DMs that were very encouraging. I’ve decided to edit and repost, and I just won’t be obsessively checking this post again to read the comments. This has everything to do with metalcore (for those who said it didn’t) because ignoring harmful people with large influence in the scene creates an environment inside of it that takes away space from women (and men) who are harmed. It’s been months and I am ready to speak for myself.

I don’t care if people think I’m unstable or need therapy. I’m in it! And everything I say has documentation to back it up :). Coalesce knows this and has seen it.

A member of this band taught at my university and was separated from the school after his misconduct toward me. He was my professor and academic advisor for over three years.

During my spring 2025 semester, he began touching me and gave me a personal, non-university email and moved our correspondence there. Over a short period we exchanged over 100 emails, many of them explicitly sexual. In writing, he described me as a sexual object, talked about his urges and past in sexualizing women, talked about my body, admitted he had a pattern of relationships like ours in the past, and called me “ballerina,” talked about my body constantly. He was in charge of my academic future and clearly his feelings were more important than that.

He got me into his office after hours. He put his hands all over me and said the only thing that stopped him going further was that he suddenly remembered I was “a person” and that “the divine” fell into his mind. (In writing 🙂 ) This is not the only time that week he touched me. The university legal team used this information on top of the email evidence to part ways with him. All the emails were turned over to the university and to the band later on via my friend. The band knows exactly what he did. Their response has been to block anyone who raises concerns, including me. All I’ve done is occasionally view their stories because I’m terrified he will smear me publicly as my friends have made moves without my consent. I’m not asking for his removal, but it is insane to me to protect such a person.

I know how this will be read by some people: that I’m unstable, dramatic, “obsessed with cancel culture,” that I “wanted it,” that I should “just move on.” I’ve heard all of it. I don’t care. There is nothing you can say that is worse than anything I’ve told myself. I won’t bore anyone with the details of the impact this has had on me. I am not going to go into details about my mental health and what he knew about it, but he knew I was vulnerable. He knew everything about it. I am not pretending I was naïve. I am saying he knew exactly how attached I was, and how much power he had, and he used it anyway.

I’m not posting this because I “hate” the band or because I enjoy drama. I loved their music for years. Genuinely. They were who I listened to during my ballet warm ups, before competitions, etc. I am posting it because I think people deserve to know who they are protecting when they look the other way. I am not asking anyone to go after him or the other members. I don’t want that. I am assuming he has painted me poorly to them and I want to be understanding of their friendships. I don’t know the other members and I don’t have the right to make any claims on their characters, only his. I am asking for something much smaller and, to me, more important:

For groups and fans to stop turning a blind eye to men who prey on the women they are supposed to protect. All we do is expose more women to harm when we allow these men close.

I am terrified to speak up, but I know the only person benefitting from my fear is him. I have never spoken against him until now. That’s all.”

Coalesce then issued their statement to social media in another deleted post, saying the following:

“We’re aware of a Reddit post and related comments making accusations toward our guitarist Jes and, by extension, the band.

Earlier this year, Jes informed us that he had engaged in a mutual but inappropriate email exchange with a 24-year-old student at his university.  Given the obvious concerns around power dynamics, we asked to review all correspondences and evidence. We went through everything thoroughly. The physical contact that has been referenced publicly consisted of consensual interactions, which included student-initiated “pinky swears” and two non-sexual hugs, after which he did not pursue or encourage any further physical contact. Nothing resembling sexual misconduct, predation, or assault occurred. No sexually explicit images or materials were exchanged or solicited.

Jes has consistently acknowledged fault for initiating private email contact and for not immediately alerting the university, which contributed to his personal resignation from the academy. This matter arose in an academic context, and while Jes is a member of coalesce, no band-related status, access, or influence played any role in what occurred. There was also no quid pro quo conduct in his role as her professor. The documentation shows that the interaction was mutual, that the student’s attraction pre-dated these events, and it ended when Jes withdrew consent to pursue anything inappropriate.

Jes fucked up. He has repeatedly owned his part. But the narrative now being circulated goes far beyond the facts. After reviewing the evidence ourselves, we stand behind Jes and reject these mischaracterizations.”

The Reddit user then had to add several addendums as things started progressing on social media:

Note that I’m not longer updating or editing this post anymore. If anything else happens I will get get a lawyer. I will not update again without legal advice, especially after they have posted what they did to discredit me and the disgusting way more of their fanbase has treated me because of these inaccuracies

Edit 12/24: FIRST: the pinky swear stuff they posted was to HUMILIATE me. Obviously he didn’t get fired for a freaking pinky swear my God let’s all use some thinking skills. That is so meaningless. It’s a fucking pinky promise. Who goes after someone for that? I posted something in the comments showing he was asking for them after they brought it up because I was getting made fun of. The focus was meant to be POWER imbalance. I don’t care about a pinky promise.

SECOND: Grooming is MESSY. I don’t care. I have been torn apart for months and this is nothing new. I’ve faced institutional retaliation, gaslighting, and the loss of someone I trusted. Now I’m being put on blast when I have no platform off Reddit. I will also be working to pull the accurate physical event records from the university.

I WILL pursue legal action if they continue to post false information. Especially after their INCORRECT FACEBOOK AND INSTAGRAM POSTS.

There are major news outlets posting about this without posting my side too. It’s disgusting.

THIRD: STOP EMAILING ME HATE. Oh my God. All emails sent are being kept to prove harm caused by the bands post.

FOURTH: Just because I am an adult doesn’t mean I can’t be taken advantage of. Especially in UNIVERSITIES. Jesus Christ. He has known me since I was 20 or 21, has kids my age, and a wife. I don’t think I would’ve pulled away from his groping “hug” over and over had I 100% been wanting it. I was put into a very tough position and after years of wanting his approval, it felt like I finally had it. I was so attached.

I wanted him to stay and approve of me. I was verbal about that and said some things I regret trying to keep him from discarding me after making me feel so special. My feelings towards that or my crush on him don’t = wanting to be touched. I’m not even the one who reported him to Title IX, my friend did. We had only two philosophy professors in our small program, and him and I had history. He built most of my philosophy education. There is TONS of missing context on both sides because I haven’t went through our whole history on here.

I received disability accommodations from my university because I struggle very deeply with cptsd, and other things. He knew this because professors receive notices every semester for it. He made reports on my mental health in the past to make sure I was okay as I struggled and isolated (not 2025). He was well aware of my vulnerabilities and how much I looked up to him. He had other professors telling him to back off of me in April.

update 12/23 : some EVIDENCE is in this in the comments. Scroll down to the comments. The screenshots are posted under the person who has HR experience comment. I’m getting constantly messaged and I am just scared. I wanted to prove I’m not just making this up. They got to make a huge post, I’m allowed to too. I also posted a comment showing inconsistencies in their post.

from earlier: this will be my last post. I’m sorry for everyone i have bothered with this the last 24 hours.

I saw Coalesce posted on Instagram addressing my post. I also saw the comments. I never meant to make everyone so angry at me and I’m sorry. I’m sorry for coming into this group and talking about what happened to me with Jes. I never named him directly in the post. The “two hugs and a pinky promise” stuff is not even accurate. He also didn’t stop his behavior after that office event. No university parts ways with someone over two hugs and a pinky promise. he resigned because legal and hr stepped in. he resigned because there was a mountain of written evidence. Universities don’t invoke their legal team over a pinky promise and a hug. It’s just minimizing me and what happened but I’ve realized speaking up was a mistake. I am not able to stand against a group who has such a long standing fan base or platform. And I’m sorry. I expect more hate under this, i will be deleting this app after i post this. edit I’m weak and came back to obsessively read comments because I’m terrified

I know no one cares. I have gotten death threats and so much hate for just speaking up about what happened to me with this band member. this has really been the final hit in this for me. I am humiliated and feel so stupid for thinking i could have space in my own trauma. i just wanted to come here to talk about what Jes did to me to open discussion about what it feels like for band members to keep these men around and have them in these spaces despite knowing what they did. it took everything in me to speak up. It was never my responsibility to manage my long standing professors feelings and actions towards me.

I don’t know what i expected even. I just wanted to share my story with a band member. I’m sorry

The screenshots in question can be seen below.

Roadburn Fest broke the news about the band parting ways with Steineger when the festival had to announce that Coalesce have cancelled their upcoming European tour and sadly that includes their planned performance at Roadburn 2026.

The band commented: “Coalesce has parted ways with their guitarist and, as a result, will be unable to fulfill the upcoming shows.””

Washington QB Demond Williams Jr. to enter portal despite signing new deal with Huskies

0

Washington star quarterback Demond Williams Jr. announced that he was entering the transfer portal on Tuesday night. Williams will have a do-not-contact tag when he officially enters. In a post shared to social media, Williams thanked Washington coaches, teammates and fans before announcing his departure.

“I have to do what is best for me and my future,” Williams wrote. After much thought and prayer, I will be entering the transfer portal.”

News of Williams’ intention to enter the portal comes just days after the star QB signed a new deal to return to Washington for the 2026 season. The Huskies are prepping to pursue any and all legal avenues to enforce the terms of that contract, according to ESPN

Sources tell CBS Sports’ Matt Zentiz and Chris Hummer that LSU will be one of the teams to watch as Williams explores other options in the portal. The Tigers do have a need at quarterback, especially after Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss chose to remain with the Rebels instead of following Lane Kiffin to Baton Rouge should he be granted a waiver for an extra year of eligibility that’s still pending.

One of the best available playmakers hits open market

As a sophomore in 2025, Williams ranked sixth in the Big Ten with 3,065 passing yards, and his 25 touchdown passes ranked fourth. He also showed off his mobility with 611 yards and six touchdowns on the ground. Williams did all that while leading Washington to a 9-4 record, which included a win over Boise State in the LA Bowl.

Coming out of high school in Arizona, Williams was a four-star recruit and the No. 19 quarterback in the 2024 signing class, according to 247Sports. Although Williams didn’t start for most of his true freshman season, he did play in every game before starting starting in the final two. His skill was evident, and he built upon that with a big 2025 season.

In 26 games with the Huskies, Williams completed 71.5% of his throws for 4,009 yards, 33 touchdowns and nine interceptions while adding 893 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground.

Behind Williams, the Huskies don’t have a ton of experience at quarterback. The only other quarterback to attempt a pass for the Huskies this past season was Tulane transfer Kai Horton, who completed four of seven passes for 13 yards.
