Cowboys’ Jerry Jones: Goal is to retire with most Super Bowl wins

0

FRISCO, Texas — At 83 years old, Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones still has dreams.

“My goal in life is to retire as the owner that won the most Super Bowls,” Jones said during an end-of-season news conference Wednesday. “That’s my goal. To be retired in the NFL as the owner that won the most Super Bowls. We’ve got three. How many more do I have to go as a single owner? [New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft] has got how many? Six? So, I got work to do. Got work to do. But at least I’m up to the second rung in the ladder.”

The Cowboys just completed their 30th season since winning their last Super Bowl, finishing a disappointing 7-9-1 in Brian Schottenheimer’s first year as head coach. The Cowboys are the only team in the NFC not to have made it to a conference title game since 1995, and they have missed the playoffs the past two seasons.

Defensively, the Cowboys just allowed a franchise-record 511 points and are in the early stages of finding a new coordinator after firing Matt Eberflus on Tuesday. There are personnel holes at every level of the defense as well. Offensively, the Cowboys finished seventh in points per game and second in yards with a 4,000-yard quarterback (Dak Prescott), two 1,000-yard receivers (CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens) and a 1,000-yard running back (Javonte Williams).

Pickens and Williams are set to be unrestricted free agents, although the team’s priority is to keep both on long-term deals. Without an agreement with Pickens, the Cowboys will likely use the franchise tag to keep him for 2026.

“Every team has holes,” Jones said. “You have to. Just the way it works. But I see six teams that weren’t in the playoffs last year that are in the playoffs this year. I know it can happen. I know how close it is. And I think we can get in here and get the defense in shape quicker than it might look.”

Jones cites defensive tackles Quinnen Williams, Kenny Clark and Osa Odighizuwa as the strength of the unit. Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown is viewed as a building block, but he has missed more games (32) due to injury than he has played (19) in his first three seasons. Cornerback DaRon Bland has a Pro Bowl on his résumé, but he is scheduled to have his second surgery on his left foot in as many seasons next week.

The Cowboys have two first-round picks in the upcoming draft — the No. 12 selection and another wherever the Green Bay Packers‘ pick (from the trade of Micah Parsons) ends up. In 2005, the Cowboys had two first-round picks and parlayed them into Hall of Fame pass rusher DeMarcus Ware and Marcus Spears, which began a scheme change from a 4-3 to a 3-4.

The Cowboys are in the process of setting up interviews with potential coordinator candidates, but Schottenheimer said the team is not married to one scheme over another. He said the goal is to find the best teacher and communicator.

Since 2014, the Cowboys have had a former head coach as the defensive coordinator, but Jones said that that is not a requirement and that the team could look at a first-time coordinator as well.

“You’re looking for a guy that has the ability to instruct and get guys to believe and get guys to buy in,” Schottenheimer said. “We’re salesmen. When you’re up there in front of the players, you’re selling them on what you’re doing offensively, defensively, special teams — why it’s going to work.”

Belief was lacking in what Eberflus was selling, although his tenure was also hurt by the trade of Parsons. The Cowboys were unable to find a sustainable pass rush, which impacted the secondary.

Filling the holes on defense will have to come from more than just the draft. The Cowboys have not spent massively in free agency in years, although Jones hinted that it could be possible this year in part because of the flexibility created by trading Parsons. He said had the Cowboys signed Parsons, they would not have been able to afford to retain Pickens.

“Bottom line is this [offseason] is, yes, very important,” Jones said. “They’re right. We want to, while Dak is playing the game and got it down the way he’s got it, we want to get out here and basically do better than what we did this year. So, combination of those things gives us the incentive to, dare I say it, bust the budget to try to get something done now. Yes. Yes. We’ll do some dramatic things.”

Jones turns 84 in October. Catching Kraft, who has a chance for a seventh Super Bowl with the Patriots back in the postseason, looks daunting.

“I know whether it’s his gold jacket, all the things he’s accomplished from the value of this franchise, I think he’d give a lot of that up for one more Super Bowl,” executive vice president Stephen Jones said. “It’s not just me. It’s my brother [Jerry Jr.]. It’s my sister [Charlotte]. It’s Schotty. It’s [vice president of player personnel Will McClay]. Everybody in this organization wants to get the job done.”

Nick Reiner’s Lawyer Quits, Insists He’s ‘Not Guilty’ of Murder

0

Nick Reiner — son of late Hollywood icons Rob and Michele Reiner — is now without a private attorney in his double murder case.

But even as he steps away, Nick’s former lawyer is doubling down on his client’s innocence.

“Nick Reiner is not guilty of murder. Print that,” attorney Alan Jackson told reporters outside a Los Angeles courthouse on Wednesday (Jan. 7), just after officially withdrawing from the case, per Page Six.

Jackson did not elaborate on the reason for his exit, saying only that it was due to “circumstances outside of our control.”

Now Represented by a Public Defender

With Jackson off the case, Nick will now be represented by a public defender. His formal arraignment is scheduled for Feb. 23, and as of now, he has not entered a plea.

He faces two counts of first-degree murder, plus a special circumstance for multiple murders and an allegation that he used a “dangerous and deadly” weapon, believed to be a knife.

Prosecution Confident

Despite Jackson’s bold statement, LA County District Attorney Nathan Hochman says the case against Nick is strong.

Why Saints feel ‘great’ about moving forward with Tyler Shough as starting quarterback

0

Tyler Shough seems to have parlayed his successful rookie season into being the New Orleans Saints‘ starting quarterback moving forward. Saints general manager Mickey Loomis and coach Kellen Moore told reporters Wednesday that they are committed to Shough leading their offense entering the 2026 season.

The third quarterback selected in last year’s draft, Shough was inserted into the starting lineup in place of Spencer Rattler following the Saints’ 1-7 start. New Orleans went 5-4 in games that Shough started, including winning four of their final five games to finish 6-11.

“We feel great with Tyler,” Moore said. “Tyler has done an awesome job through this entire process. He’s gotten a ton better. He’s taken advantage of a bunch of opportunities we’re excited to have full offseason to build.”

The 40th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Shough, 26, likely would have been drafted higher if not for his extensive injury history in college while playing for three different schools. Those injuries contributed to Shough receiving extra eligibility, which led to him being the oldest quarterback in last year’s draft.

When fully healthy during his lone season at Louisville in 2024, Shough put up impressive numbers — 3,195 yards and 23 touchdowns — while playing in 12 games during his lone season at Louisville.

As a rookie, Shough showed marked improvement as the season progressed. He finished the year with a 67.6% completion percentage and a 91.3 quarterback rating as the Saints closed out the season as one of the NFL’s hottest teams.

While his success didn’t come as a surprise to Loomis or Moore, they acknowledged that Shough may have developed quicker than they would have anticipated — especially after he lost the starting job to Rattler in training camp.

“We thought a lot of him going into the draft,” Loomis said. “I don’t think surprising is the right word. Probably progressed a little faster than maybe we expected, but I think our coaches did a great job with him. I think our players embraced his opportunity, and obviously the player himself embraced his opportunity.”

Adding to Shough’s appeal is the fact that he is under a rookie contract.

“I think it’s pretty well documented that teams that have a quarterback on a rookie deal have been able to do some things and have some success,” Loomis said. “So part of that is just building your roster and managing it over, you know, the two, three, four, year period that you’re facing.”

With Shough in place at quarterback, the Saints can look at other positions in the upcoming NFL Draft, starting with their first-round pick at No. 8 overall.

Prime Minister Mark Carney to visit China next week as Canada pivots away from the US

0

TORONTO — Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Wednesday that he will visit China next week to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping as Canada looks to reduce its reliance on the United States, which has threatened its economy and sovereignty.

It is the first visit to China by a Canadian prime minister in more than eight years. Xi invited Carney to China when they met during an Asia-Pacific summit in October. The visit comes as the two countries move to restore stronger ties after years of tensions.

“We’re forging new partnerships around the world to transform our economy from one that has been reliant on a single trade partner, to one that is stronger and more resilient to global shock,” Carney said in a statement on Wednesday.

Carney will travel to China from Jan. 13 to 17. He will also attend the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland from Jan. 19 to 21.

Trump has been threatening Canada’s economy and sovereignty with tariffs, most offensively by claiming Canada could be “the 51st state.”

The attempt at rapprochement with China comes as Carney looks to double Canada’s non-U.S. exports in the next decade and as the free trade agreement with the U.S. and Mexico is up for review this year. More than 75% percent of Canada’s exports go to the U.S.

China is Canada’s second largest trading partner.

Relations between China and Canada took a nosedive in late 2018 after Canadian authorities arrested a senior executive of Chinese tech giant Huawei as a part of its extradition agreement with the United States. China then arrested two Canadian citizens in retaliation.

More recently, relations have been shaken by Canada’s decision to levy a 100% tariff on electric vehicles, batteries and other goods from China in 2024. Canada made the move in tandem with the U.S.

Canadian canola producers, seafood exporters and pork farmers are dealing with steep Chinese tariffs in retaliation.

China has offered to remove its import taxes on some Canadian products if Canada drops the EV tariff.

VINNIE VINCENT Won’t Release His Amazing New Album Unless He Sells All Copies Of His $200 Single

0

Vinnie Vincent has doubled down on one of the most controversial release strategies in recent rock history, defending his decision to sell CDs of his new single for as much as $300 — and warning fans that his upcoming album, Guitarmageddon, may never see the light of day if sales don’t meet his expectations.

The former Kiss guitarist recently began promoting Guitarmageddon with an unconventional rollout, offering physical CD copies of the lead single “Ride the Serpent” for $200. For U.S. buyers, the price climbs to $225 once shipping is added, while international fans face shipping costs of $100, pushing the total to nearly $300 for a single-song CD.

Despite backlash from fans, Vincent has shown no signs of backing down. Instead, he has gone on the offensive, comparing the single to luxury goods. Vincent described “Ride the Serpent” as “caviar or fine art,” calling it a “nearly eight-minute, intense guitar powerdrive.” And yeah sure, maybe it is that good, and of course artists deserve compensation – but $300?

In a series of posts responding to criticism (as captured by the folks at Guitar World), Vincent escalated the situation further, stating that he will only release Guitarmageddon if fans purchase 1,000 CDs of each single — and that none of the CDs will ship until all copies are sold.

“Unless I get compensated for my work, the album stays unheard,” Vincent wrote. “The praise from a fan base is pointless unless I’m compensated FIRST.”

Vincent went on to argue that traditional album releases are no longer financially viable and claimed his pricing strategy is a way to counter bootlegging and devaluation of music in the streaming era. “I am the manufacturer. I produce high end product. I set the price accordingly. It’s that simple,” he said. “I’ve created an elite product for elite taste.”

In perhaps his boldest statement yet, Vincent compared Guitarmageddon to some of rock’s most revered albums. “I lived thru Meet the Beatles, Led Zeppelin II, Are You Experienced, Truth, Wheels of Fire, Pink Floyd etc,” he wrote. “As for impact and perfection from the first song to last, Guitarmageddon is a classic. The number one contender.”

Vincent acknowledged that those albums benefited from decades of legacy and cultural impact, but insisted his record rivals them in quality and ambition. Vincent also goes off the rails and takes some fairly shitty shots at people on food stamps, saying: “So for the smash and grab EBT card group of self entitled complainers bitching about price… fuck off. The fatigue is now exhaustion. They are the side effect of what the internet produced. Gimme gimme gimme.”

Vincent also took aim at what he described as entitled fans and oversaturation in the modern guitar world, criticizing free access to music and an abundance of players he feels lack originality. “At this point there’s an overload of guitar players,” he wrote. “They generally sound the same, play the same… People are beginning to tune out guitar players because they’re a penny a dozen.”
