Giannis affirms commitment to Bucks, would ‘never’ demand trade

0

Giannis Antetokounmpo‘s future has loomed over the 2025-26 season, but the two-time MVP insisted that he will never demand a trade from Milwaukee.

“There will never be a chance, and there will never be a moment that I will come out and say, ‘I want a trade,'” Antetokounmpo told the Athletic following Wednesday’s 120-113 loss to the Golden State Warriors. “That’s not in my nature.”

With about a month to go before the NBA trade deadline, Antetokounmpo reiterated his commitment to Milwaukee for the rest of this season and beyond.

“My plan is to be here for the rest of my career,” Antetokounmpo said. “If they don’t want me … I’m not the one in charge. I am an employee.”

ESPN reported last month that the Bucks have not engaged teams about a potential Antetokounmpo trade and instead were focused on adding to their roster to try and build around their star forward.

Antetokounmpo, who turned 31 in December, is averaging 29.5 points, 10 rebounds and 5.5 assists this season despite missing 14 games due to injury. Despite putting up some of the best numbers of his career, the Bucks are in 11th place in the Eastern Conference at 16-21, which has caused Antetokounmpo to emphasize a message of urgency in recent weeks.

“I am not [going anywhere],” Antetokounmpo told the Athletic. “I am invested in this team. I want to turn this team around. I want to play good basketball. I want to be healthy. I want to help my teammates. I want to win games. The last six games we’ve played, we’re 4-2. We have a lot of games in front of us. I’m locked the f— in. I’m locked in. My priority is just staying healthy.”

ESPN reported before the start of the season that the Bucks and Knicks discussed a potential trade over the summer with New York emerging as Antetokounmpo’s preferred destination. Antetokounmpo acknowledged his own wandering eye during the offseason, but said at the start of the season that he was committed to the Bucks, although it would be human to “change his mind.”

Yet, Antetokounmpo has attempted to distance himself from the trade chatter on several occasions this season.

Twice last month, he reiterated that he was “locked in” and talks from his agent were out of his hands and again when he said “it’s disrespectful towards the organization, my coaching staff, myself and all the people that work hard for me to come out here and say, ‘I don’t want to be here.'”

A key crossroads still exists for Antetokounmpo when he becomes eligible for a four-year, $275 million extension on Oct. 1. He also holds an opt-out in his current contract in the summer of 2027. Antetokounmpo’s decisions there still could give him significant sway about any future moves.

Yet, as the season nears its halfway point, Antetokounmpo said his focus was not on the trade deadline, but on finding a way to salvage this Bucks season.

“Today, I am committed — not 100 percent, but 1 million percent to my teammates, to my craft, to this team and to this city,” he said. “One million percent. I don’t look right. I don’t look left. I look only to the next game, which is the Lakers, and I want to win the game. I want us to stack wins before the All-Star Game to get ourselves back to the race. We’re what, 11th now? This is not who we are, you know? So that’s the only thing in my mindset.”

Internet service in Iran cut off or restricted as deadly protests reach a possible tipping point

0

Iranian authorities appeared to be cutting off internet access Thursday in the capital and some other regions of the country as mass protests and chanting against the government continue. Multiple sources in Tehran told CBS News the internet was down in the capital.

The NetBlocks monitoring organization said at about 8:30 local time in Iran that its live data “show #Iran is now in the midst of a nationwide internet blackout; the incident follows a series of escalating digital censorship measures targeting protests across the country and hinders the public’s right to communicate at a critical moment.”

One CBS News source in the capital said there were “huge crowds out across Tehran. Unprecedented,” and confirmed that the internet was down for most people in the city. He said some people, with more robust, more reliable business accounts could still get online. Not long after, that source became unreachable, suggesting the blackout had widened even further.

There were reports on social media, largely by anti-regime activists, that web service was also down or severely restricted in the cities of Esfahan, Lodegan, Abdanan, and parts of Shiraz.

The web outages came as Iranians began chanting out of their windows against the regime, following a call by exiled Iranian Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, the son of the former U.S.-backed shah, to make their voices heard at 8 p.m. local time (noon Eastern). Analysts and insiders told CBS News the scale of the response to Pahalvi’s call could determine whether the deadly, 12-day-old protests fizzle out as previous rounds of unrest have, or grow into a major challenge to the government, and provoke a possible wider crackdown.

“All of the huge crowds in my neighborhood are pro-Pahlavi and from several areas my sources report the same — pro-Pahlavi crowds are prevailing, undeniably,” the source in Tehran told CBS News, calling it “monarchists responding to Reza.”

iran-mashhad-protest-jan-2026.jpg

Protesters are seen tearing up a large Iranian flag after it was taken down in the city of Mashhad, in Iran’s Razavi Khorasan province, in an image taken from video posted on social media amid nationwide protests. The location of the video was verified by Reuters but the date could not be, though it corresponded with reports of a protest in Mashhad on Jan. 7, 2026, a day before the video was posted online.

Reuters/Social media

So far the unrest has left at least 39 people dead, including at least four members of the security services, and seen more than 2,260 others detained, according to the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency.

NetBlocks said earlier that its “data show the loss of connectivity on #Iran internet backbone provider TCI in the restive city of Kermanshah as protests spread across the nation in their 12th day; the incident comes amid rising casualties with indications of disruptions in multiple regions.”

Iranian authorities regularly restrict or disable internet access when they expect significant protests or other potentially destabilizing events.

President Mahsoud Pezeshkian, seen as a reformer but subordinate to Iran’s longtime Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, intimated ahead of his election in 2024 that he would free up the internet and make more websites accessible. It remains tightly restricted, however. Social media sites such as TikTok, Facebook and X are officially banned, as is access to U.S. and European news sites, including CBS News.

Many young, tech-savvy Iranians have become adept at getting around the restrictions, but it’s a cumbersome process, and when the regime slows down internet speeds at politically sensitive times, the whole system can become unusable.

Marshon Lattimore arrested: Commanders CB faces weapons charges in Ohio

Police arrested Washington Commanders cornerback Marshon Lattimore in Ohio on weapons charges, according to records obtained by 3News. Police took Lattimore into custody on charges of carrying concealed weapons and improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle.

The Commanders are reportedly aware of the situation, and released a statement to 3News on the arrest:

“We have been made aware of the arrest and are gathering more information. We are in communication with the NFL League Office and have no further comment at this time.”

Lattimore, who starred at Ohio State from 2014-16, recorded 27 combined tackles, seven passes defensed and one interception in nine games played before tearing his ACL in Week 9. Washington traded for him in the middle of last year following seven-and-a-half successful seasons with the New Orleans Saints.

The former No. 11 overall pick earned the 2017 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award after recording five interceptions and 18 passes defensed. Lattimore quickly emerged into one of the premier cornerbacks in the league, and was named to four Pro Bowls while recording 405 tackles, 88 passes defensed and 15 interceptions in his 97 career games played with New Orleans.

Lattimore has one more year remaining on his deal but is likely to be released this offseason, as he turns 30 years old in May and is coming off a major knee injury. There is no more guaranteed money remaining on the contract, and Washington can save $18.5 million by parting ways with him pre-June 1 or post-June 1.

Brazil’s Lula vetoes bill that could reduce Bolsonaro’s prison time

0

SAO PAULO — Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Thursday vetoed a bill that could reduce the 27-year prison sentence of his predecessor Jair Bolsonaro for the far-right leader’s failed 2023 coup attempt.

Lula, who had already pledged to block the proposal, announced the decision during a ceremony at the presidential palace in capital Brasilia. It came on the third anniversary of the riots led by Bolsonaro’s supporters that destroyed government buildings and helped build the case against the former president.

The Senate passed the bill in December. Brazil’ s Congress could override Lula’s veto, but analysts say that could be a risky move for lawmakers ahead of next October’s general elections. The 80-year-old leftist president is currently a frontrunner in a likely battle with Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro, one of the former president’s sons.

“We don’t have the right of forgetting our past. That’s why we don’t accept dictatorships, civilian or military,” Lula told members of the three branches of power during the ceremony. “January 8th is marked by history as the day of our democracy’s victory. It is victory against those who tried to seize power through force, ignoring popular will expressed in the polls.”

Lula narrowly won his third term against Bolsonaro, who was later ruled ineligible to run until 2030 for abuse of power during the campaign trail. In November the former president started serving for his attempted coup conviction, extending that deadline for the 70-year-old leader until 2033. There are other cases pending against him.

Lower house speaker Hugo Motta and the president of Brazil’s Senate, Davi Alcolumbre, did not attend the ceremony. Bolsonaro supporters also destroyed part of congress during the 2023 riots, often compared to the storming of Capitol Hill by voters of U.S. President Donald Trump one year earlier.

If Lula had not vetoed the bill, the count of attempting a coup d’etat would be absorbed into another charge, which would then reduce Bolsonaro’s prison sentence. Other convicts linked to the coup trial could have their jail time reduced by two-thirds.

Bolsonaro’s lawyers have urged authorities to put him in house arrest due to his poor health. He has been in and out of hospitals since he was stabbed by a man found to be mentally ill during the 2018 election campaign.

Neither the former president nor his lawyers have made comments about Lula’s decision.

‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff ‘Y: Marshals’ Changes Its Name

0

The upcoming Yellowstone sequel Y: Marshals has quietly changed its title, and one major media outlet is speculating it might have to do with network politics.

What Is Y: Marshals?

Y: Marshals is an upcoming show on CBS that is a spinoff from the Paramount smash Yellowstone, following the character of Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) as he leaves the Dutton Ranch and undertakes a new start.

Did Y: Marshals Change Its Name?

Yes. As The Hollywood Reporter writes, CBS has quietly changed the title of the show to just Marshals, dropping the Y that originally preceded the word.

Why Did Y: Marshals Change Its Name to Marshals?

According to THR, a representative from CBS said on Wednesday (Jan. 7) that Y: Marshals was always intended as a working title and was always subject to change, adding that the Y was “always considered silent” as far as the network was concerned.

Taste of Country logo

The Y will remain in the logo as part of the branding of the show, but will no longer appear in the title.

THR speculates that since Yellowstone and Marshals creator Taylor Sheridan has signed a new deal with CBS and will be leaving Paramount — which still holds the rights to Yellowstone — the title change might have something to do with bad blood between the two competing networks, or the desire to leave behind the old branding.

The CBS rep denied the title change had anything to do with business.

Sheridan has a demonstrable history with changing the titles of his shows before they make it to air.

Both Yellowstone prequels that have aired so far originally had different titles.

1883 originally had the working title of 1886, while 1923 was first titled 1932.

Additionally, another upcoming Yellowstone sequel that’s been announced, Dutton Ranch, may very well not make it to TV with that title intact. The show features Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly reprising their Yellowstone roles as Rip and Beth.

READ MORE: Marshals: Here’s Everything We Know About the Yellowstone Sequel

Hauser tells FOX News Digital, “Well, first of all, it’s not Dutton Ranch … that’s not the name of it.”

Who stars in Marshals?

The show stars Grimes as Kayce Dutton, the youngest of the Dutton siblings. He’s accepted a job as a U.S. Marshal in Montana, continuing in the law enforcement work Dutton had once intended to leave behind.

Several familiar Yellowstone faces will appear in Marshals in addition to Grimes.

Brecken Merrill is set to reprise his role as Kayce’s son, Tate, and Gil Birmingham (Thomas Rainwater) and Mo Brings Plenty (Mo) also return in their previous roles.

Kelsey Asbille — who played Monica Dutton on Yellowstone — is noticeably absent from the show’s trailers and promotional materials.

What Happens in the Trailer for Marshals?

The first look at the new show is relatively brief, and it focuses on a solemn-looking Kayce Dutton considering his new direction.

“I’m changing paths, trying to find a new beginning,” he says in the trailer, followed by footage of Kayce giving chase to an SUV on horseback.

Check it out in the clip below:

When Does Marshals Premiere?

Marshals will premiere on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at 8PM ET on CBS.

That position means it will anchor CBS Sunday nights, followed by Tracker in its new timeslot of 9PM on Sundays.

Watson will close out CBS Sunday nights at 10PM in its second season.

Where Can I Stream Marshals?

Marshals will air first on CBS, then become available for streaming via Paramount+.

Marshals Season 1 will comprise 13 episodes, according to People.
