GOMA, Congo — The Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group on Thursday held a symbolic burial for 22 people killed in a drone strike earlier this month in the North Kivu province in eastern Congo.
M23 claimed that the attack, which targeted their military positions in the Masisi territory on Jan. 2, was carried out by the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) and their allies.
The rebel group said all the victims are civilians, a claim questioned by at least one expert who said some may have been combatants killed in fighting.
The FARDC has not commented on the attack. Patrick Muyaya, the spokesperson for the Congolese government, said in a post on X that Thursday’s funeral was “the height of indecency and inhumanity.”
“The mass graves, the bodies abandoned by the roadside, the villages emptied of their inhabitants,” he said. “No ceremony, no staged event, no fabricated narrative can erase the reality of these crimes, nor absolve the father #Rwanda and the #M23 who planned, ordered, and executed them.”
The burial comes as the rebel group engages in ongoing negotiations with the Congolese government to end decades of fighting.
The ceremony was held at the Unity Stadium in Goma, the provincial capital, in the presence of M23 administration officials, representatives of religious groups and hundreds of family members of the victims. The bodies, accompanied by relatives, had been transferred the day before from Masisi to the provincial capital.
According to the M23, the victims died in strikes carried out using so-called kamikaze drones in several localities in the Masisi territory. Three other people were reportedly buried on site, the rebels said, while dozens were injured as a result of the explosions.
The medical director of Masisi General Hospital, Théophile Kubuya Hangi, said the facility had received 47 wounded after the explosions.
“Twenty-two people died from their injuries. Fourteen wounded are still hospitalized and receiving care,” he told the AP.
Promesse Hagenimana was among those injured in the bombing.
“We were standing on the road in front of a concrete house. Moments later, the house exploded before our eyes,” she said. “We threw ourselves to the ground. When I got up, my arm felt heavy. Next to me, a little boy was dead. I ran to the hospital before losing consciousness. ”
The administrator of the Masisi territory, Emmanuel Ndizeye, said during the ceremony that the area had been hit by “a series of bombings.” He specified that the bodies transferred to Goma came only from areas accessible by road.
“In some localities, insecurity and the state of the roads do not allow for the evacuation of victims, who have been buried on site,” he said.
Erasto Musanga, named as the governor of North Kivu by the M23 administration, accused Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi of being responsible for the violence.
“Even as we speak, Tshisekedi is killing more people,” he said, threatening legal action through the M23’s own justice system.
During the ceremony, several family members, in tears, approached the coffins of their loved ones. None agreed to speak to the media.
According to researcher Stewart Muhindo from the Kinshasa-based Ebuteli research center, “the figure of 22 civilians killed is greatly exaggerated,” and could be intended to elicit sympathy from the international community.
He said that according to sources on the ground in Masisi, the actual number of civilian casualties did not appear to exceed a dozen, adding that some of the coffins presented could contain the bodies of combatants killed in the clashes.
Congo, the U.S. and U.N. experts accuse Rwanda of backing M23, which has grown from hundreds of members in 2021 to around 6,500 fighters, according to the U.N.
More than 100 armed groups are vying for a foothold in mineral-rich eastern Congo, near the border with Rwanda, most prominently M23. The conflict has created one of the world’s most significant humanitarian crises, with more than 7 million people displaced, according to the U.N. agency for refugees.

The 2025-26 Major League Baseball offseason is ongoing, and with the new year having come and gone we’re working our way deeper into the sport’s offseason calendar. With plenty of big-name free agents and trade candidates still on the board even at this increasingly late hour, there’s a daily supply of rumors and reporting regarding them. Speaking of which, you can find Thursday’s roundup just below.
Phillies interested in Bichette
The Phillies may be looking to upgrade their infield situation, and on that front free agent Bo Bichette is of interest to the club, to the point that they’ve scheduled a meeting, the Athletic reports.
Any signing of Bichette by Philly would likely entail moving on from catcher JT Realmuto, who’s also a free agent, and trading third baseman Alec Bohm, according to that same report. The arbitration-eligible Bohm and the Phillies on Thursday settled on a $10.2 million salary for 2026. With Trea Turner and Bryston Stott entrenched at at shortstop and second base, respectively, for the Phillies, Bichette would presumably take over at third base in place of Bohm.
“Bichette’s optimal position is second base, but his bat may convince a team to tolerate his substandard play at short for a few more years yet. He rebounded from a down season by clearing a .290 average (for the fourth time in five tries) and 60 extra-base hits (for the third time). Bichette’s flat swing allows him to wear out elevated pitches, with his .337 average on offerings located in the upper half ranking fifth among qualifiers. As an added bonus, he’s on the younger side for a free agent (he’ll turn 28 in March).”
This past season, Bichette for the AL champion Blue Jays had an OPS+ of 129 and WAR of 3.5 in 139 games for the Blue Jays.
With little movement on Bellinger, Yankees consider Bichette
The Yankees’ priority this offseason is re-upping with outfielder Cody Bellinger, who last season put up a 5.1 WAR — his highest such figure since his MVP season of 2019. However, the Yankees and Bellinger still have a wide gap in talks and the club is now looking “more seriously” at the aforementioned Bichette, the New York Post reports.
On Bellinger, The Athletic reports that the Yankees have offered a multi-year deal worth more than $30 million per season, but Bellinger and his agency “continue to push for seven years.” The Yankees have said basically all offseason that they want Bellinger back, but perhaps the ask from his camp is a bit aggressive for the Yankees’ tastes. If that’s the case, it’s possible they’d pivot to Bichette.
Bichette, who turns 28 in March, has been a member of the AL East-rival Blue Jays for his entire professional career to date. He’s a shortstop who may also be willing to man second or third, but the Yankees may at least theoretically be open to an upgrade over Anthony Volpe at short. Bichette endured uncharacteristic struggles in 2024, thanks in part to nagging injuries, but in 2025 he rebounded to put up vintage numbers and then some. As such, he’s one of the most coveted free agents available this winter.
Yankees still exploring trade for rotation help
The Yankees in an effort to add another starting pitcher to their mix for 2026 may have missed out on Edward Cabrera, who wound up being dealt to the Cubs, but now New York has moved on to other targets. Specifically, the Yankees have had at least cursory trade discussions with the Nationals regarding MacKenzie Gore and with the Brewers regarding Freddy Peralta, MLB.com reports. Gore would be more of an upside play for the Yankees, while Peralta is an established frontline presence who boasts three straight seasons of at least 200 strikeouts. Both hurlers are believed to be at least theoretically available this offseason.
When healthy, the Yankees’ rotation is a strong one, but Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodón, and Clarke Schmidt are all expected to open the 2026 season in the injured list as they recover from various elbow surgeries.
“The Mets’ preference is to offer a shorter contract length (probably less than four years) with a high annual average value. League sources expect the Blue Jays to go longer. Assuming they’ll act aggressively and given their history of swooping in and making deals with stars, the Dodgers loom as a contender.”
Speaking of a short-term, high-AAV deal for Tucker, our Mike Asixa recently explored what that might look like. The Blue Jays have been among the most aggressive of teams this offseason coming off their pennant-winning campaign in 2025, and the Dodgers of course remain the standard in terms of ownership’s commitment to building a championship roster. As for the Mets, owner Steve Cohen has vast resources and they’re in need of a headline-grabbing addition after the free-agent losses of Pete Alonso and Edwin Díaz.
As for Tucker, he’s going into his age-29 season in 2026 and he boasts a career OPS+ of 139 and a WAR of 27.3 across parts of eight MLB seasons. His combination of power, plate discipline, defense, and base-running make him a star.
The Rockies and right-hander Michael Lorenzen have agreed to a one-year, $8 million free agent contract with a $9 million club option for 2027, ESPN reports.
Lorenzen, 34, is coming off a 2025 season for the Royals in which he pitched to a 4.64 ERA and a 4.59 FIP in 26 starts and one relief appearance. For his career, the one-time All-Star has an ERA+ of 103 and a WAR of 10.6 in 11 major league seasons.

Riley Green admitted to me on Taste of Country Nights that he once expected all of his ex-girlfriends to text him at the same time, for the same reason. But not a single one did.
Green was referring to the moment when he was awarded People Magazine‘s Sexiest Country Star award back in October of 2025.
“I was expecting ex-girlfriends to text me about it,” Green told me. Instead, he got a very different kind of text response.
“It wasn’t that, it was just a bunch of my buddies back home giving me a hard time,” he joked.
When I asked why he thought his ex-girlfriends would text him about him winning such an award he said “I don’t know. Because I won, or something. I mean, geez, who you gonna text? That’s like a ‘Yeah, you know, like, take that.'”
The award was a pick-me-up for Green, especially when he thought about his old relationships.
Green continued, “You remember “How You Like Me Now”, Toby Keith? That was playing in my head over and over.”
Green, who has been linked to, but never confirmed with country superstars, Megan Moroney and Ella Langley has been the target of many women trying to get his attention.
But there’s always some negative press that comes along with being a sex symbol.
Who is Riley Green’s Ex-Girlfriend Sophia Sansone?
Sophia Sansone — a music industry figure whose brother is Farmer John on Farmer Wants a Wife — was formerly linked to Green, and even joined him on some awards show red carpets.
This TikTok video is a recap of Sansone’s story in Nashville, including her relationship with Green.
Only part of the clip was about her country star ex-boyfriend, but Sansone herself chimed in in the comments sections, writing, “I wouldn’t call my ex a winner in any sense of the word but thank you for everything else queen.”

Safe to say, Green did not get a text from Riley Green when he won the People‘s Sexiest Country Star award.
But enough of the gossip: Let’s take a look into Green’s recently sold Nashville home.

Now that the Hawks and Wizards have officially kicked off trade season, we’ll grade all sides of the NBA’s major deals and break down the ramifications for all teams and players involved.
What this deal means for the Hawks: Less than five years ago, the Hawks reached the 2021 conference finals behind a star-making performance from Young, who averaged 28.8 PPG and 9.5 APG in the playoffs at age 22. It seemed like the start of a run for Atlanta, which had just one key player older than 27. Instead, the Young-era Hawks had already peaked.
Quickly eliminated from the playoffs in 2022 and 2023, Atlanta has yet to get back. The Hawks opened this season with high expectations after adding Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Kristaps Porzingis, but Atlanta went 2-8 in the 10 games Young played this season, leading to this franchise-altering deal.
The Hawks defending better with Young on the bench is certainly nothing new. That’s been the case throughout his career. According to Cleaning the Glass data, which filters out garbage time, 2022-23 is the only season the Hawks haven’t allowed at least two points per 100 possessions more with Young on the court than on the bench.
Historically, that’s been counterbalanced by the enormous boost Young provides the Atlanta offense. Flipping that stat, 2023-24 is the only season Atlanta hasn’t scored at least five more points per 100 possessions offensively with Young on the court. That actually hasn’t changed at all this season, despite the emergence of Jalen Johnson as an All-Star. The Hawks are scoring 9.2 more points per 100 possessions with Young, which ranks in the 95th percentile leaguewide.
The issue is twofold: Atlanta is defending better with Young on the bench, and much worse with him on the court.
The latter factor is probably random noise. Based on GeniusIQ’s quantified shot probability measure (qSP), which measures the expected effective field goal percentage (eFG%) given the location and type of shot, distance of nearby defenders and player ability, Hawks opponents get slightly better shots when Young plays. Atlanta’s qSP on defense goes from 54% without Young, which would rank 12th in the league, to 56.6% with him. That would rank 29th, ahead of only the New Orleans Pelicans.
Still, the actual shooting difference without Young is more than three times larger. Hawks opponents shoot a 63% eFG% with Young on the court and just 54% with him on the bench. The shot quality differential is more in line with Young’s typical defensive impact, and the shotmaking is likely a fluke.
The bigger factor going forward is that Atlanta has found a way to survive without Young. The Hawks’ minus-0.4 net rating this season is their best when Young sits at any point in his career. And although that kind of break-even play is not good enough to escape the play-in, remember that it comes with zero contributions from Young’s roster spot. Replacing him with McCollum should help the Hawks be more competitive the rest of the season.
The Atlanta offense has still ranked around league average so long as Johnson has been on the court. It’s when the Hawks play with neither Johnson nor Young that their offense craters to 107.8 points per 100 possessions according to Cleaning the Glass, which ranks in the 7th percentile leaguewide.
Starting guards Alexander-Walker and Dyson Daniels supply enough playmaking in concert with Johnson as a point forward to keep the Atlanta offense flowing. But without a third capable ballhandler in the backcourt, the Hawks’ second units have struggled badly. McCollum should lift those groups.
In particular, Atlanta will benefit from McCollum’s ability to create his own shot. According to GeniusIQ, he has shot an effective 51.5% on half-court shots that are neither an assist opportunity nor a putback. Onyeka Okongwu (50.5%) is the only player on the Hawks above 46% eFG% on at least 50 such attempts, and his shot volume is nearly as high as McCollum’s.
There might be a role for Kispert, too, although his skill set overlaps with that of Atlanta reserve Luke Kennard. Kispert is a more capable defender and younger at 26. He’s under contract through 2028-29, whereas Kennard is on a one-year deal.
Looking forward, this trade gives Atlanta the ability to reshape its roster. The Hawks no longer have any player making more than $31 million at any point during his contract. They can re-sign or extend McCollum (and potentially Porzingis, depending on his health) and have ample flexibility to add to the roster this summer without threatening the luxury tax.
In the longer term, Atlanta is betting on the development of Johnson — a good bet to make his All-Star debut — and the draft picks the team has coming to supply needed shot creation. The Hawks have the better of first-round picks this year from the Milwaukee Bucks and Pelicans thanks to their trade on 2025 draft night.
Only the Indiana Pacers have a worse record than the Pelicans, and the Bucks would also be in the lottery if the season ended today. Projections using ESPN’s Basketball Power Index give Atlanta the No. 1 pick via that trade in 15% of simulations.
If the Hawks can find another star through the draft, they’ve collected enough quality role players with an emphasis on defense to build around them better than they could Young. That offers hope for a new era in Atlanta.
Surely, the Hawks hoped they could get some pick value in return for Young. That Atlanta was willing to make this deal without any reflects how difficult the trade market is for max-level players who aren’t inner-circle stars. Given that reality, the Hawks not having to include picks to incentivize taking on Young’s 2026-27 player option isn’t such a bad thing.
What this deal means for the Wizards: Since hiring Michael Winger and Will Dawkins to lead their front office in 2023, the Wizards have been one of the NBA’s most patient teams, accumulating young talent without a clear path toward competing for a playoff spot. Trading for Young is a course correction that signals Washington is heading into a new phase of its rebuild.
It would be interesting to know how much the Wizards’ recent success played into that decision. Since starting the season 1-15, Washington has gone 9-10, including five wins in the past seven games. That might have suggested to Wizards management that simply playing out the season and collecting another lottery pick was no longer a certainty because they owe their pick to the New York Knicks if it falls outside the top eight.
More broadly, Washington might be at the point where supporting the development of its young talent — most notably starters Bilal Coulibaly, Kyshawn George and Alex Sarr, all of them 22 or younger — with capable veterans is appropriate. We’ve seen how that accelerated the progress of the Houston Rockets and Detroit Pistons in recent seasons.
I’m not sure Young is a natural fit in that role. He’s an outstanding passer who led the NBA with 11.6 APG last season, but that came in the context of Young dominating the ball in a way the veterans Houston and Detroit added did not.
Young’s 5.7 minutes time of possession this season, per GeniusIQ tracking on NBA Advanced Stats, is more than McCollum (4.5) in fewer minutes per game. He has held the ball approximately 41% of the time the Hawks have been on offense, as compared with approximately 29% for McCollum with the Wizards. Fred VanVleet, the point guard Houston added at a similar stage, had approximately 35% time of possession during his first season with the Rockets.
Given Coulibaly, George and Sarr will likely end up primarily in off-ball roles, that might work out if they’re OK handling the ball less. Young will be a more dangerous pick-and-roll playmaker than Washington has had since prime John Wall. The Wizards are 25th in points per chance off pick-and-rolls this season. Young ranked 12th in 2024-25 in points per chance among ballhandlers who received at least 1,000 screens.
The trickier fit is Young with second-year guard Bub Carrington, who has played both on and off the ball in his NBA career. Adding Young might push Carrington more toward shooting guard, where Washington already has rookie lottery pick Tre Johnson.
More than anything else, this is probably a value play for the Wizards. Despite his defensive limitations, Young is still a four-time All-Star because of the way he lifted Atlanta offensively. Young picking up his $49 million player option for 2026-27 — perhaps in the context of an extension beyond next season — won’t be an issue for a Washington team that was looking at $90-plus million in cap space, pending the Wizards retaining their draft pick. They’ll still have max-level room to either add supporting veterans or take on contracts for draft compensation.
Acquiring Young now gives Washington three months to evaluate how he and the team’s young players fit together before building around them this offseason. If dealing for Young was the centerpiece of Washington’s efforts to move toward competitiveness, I’d be concerned. As a starting point in that process, it makes more sense.

5:25 p.m. – A stretch of snowfall can be seen traveling east across Interstate 40 approaching Albuquerque and Santa Fe. The storm stretches up to northern parts of the state, including Los Alamos, Española, and Taos.
Those in Socorro could also see snowfall on Thursday evening radar indicates. This storm system appears to include much of north central New Mexico.
5:20 p.m. – Rain showers have started to enter Albuquerque and parts of the metro. Interactive radar shows snow is also included in this approaching storm pattern.
5 p.m. – Rain mixed with snow sweeping across Albuquerque from the southwest. Thunder and lighting are possible in this storm pattern as well, according to KOAT Chief Meteorologist Byron Morton.
This evening and tonight we expect an increase in wintry mix and then snow showers with the potential for heavy snowfall through western, central and northern New Mexico.
Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories are in effect for many locations due to the potential for heavy accumulating snow and difficult travel conditions.
In the Albuquerque metro, a winter weather advisory could be issued as recent computer model runs are coming in with more snow accumulation than perhaps originally thought.
Right now we are expecting a 1-3″ snowfall for the metro, and it could end up being more than that.
