Venezuela live updates as Trump calls off “second wave of attacks”
Trump says he’s called off “second Wave of Attacks” on a cooperative Venezuela
President Trump announced on his Truth Social platform overnight that he’s “cancelled the previously expected second Wave of Attacks, which looks like it will not be needed.”
Mr. Trump explained that Venezuela “is releasing large numbers of political prisoners as a sign of ‘Seeking Peace,'” which he called “a a very important and smart gesture.”
The president said the U.S. and Venezuela “are working well together, especially as it pertains to rebuilding, in a much bigger, better, and more modern form, their oil and gas infrastructure” and that he waved off the second set of attacks due to Venezuela’s cooperation with his administration.
“However,” he added, “all ships will stay in place for safety and security purposes.”
Trump to meet with oil execs this afternoon
President Trump is scheduled to meet with oil industry executives Friday afternoon as he pushes U.S. oil companies to invest in Venezuela.
The meeting is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
Mr. Trump has pitched Venezuela’s oil wealth as a way to financially fuel the country’s economic recovery — and deliver benefits for energy consumers and oil companies. In an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity that aired Thursday, he said he’s expecting oil companies to spend at least $100 billion to “rebuild the whole oil infrastructure” in the South American country. He mentioned that amount again in an overnight post on his Truth Social platform.
The president told Hannity he’s meeting with executives from the “top 14” oil companies.
Energy Secretary Christopher Wright also met with oil executives earlier this week.
Chevron is currently the only major U.S. oil company with a presence in Venezuela. It remains unclear whether any other firms plan to enter the market imminently.
Some experts say drawing in foreign investment could take years due to a combination of high costs, political instability and a history of the Venezuelan government nationalizing oil assets. And Venezuelan crude oil tends to be heavy and tough to refine, though some refineries on the Gulf Coast are equipped to process it.
Trump to CBS News: “It’s a doctrine of ‘don’t send drugs into our country'”
President Trump briefly spoke Thursday with CBS News’ Robert Costa about his overarching policy on Venezuela and about how he defines his foreign policy as responsive to threats.
Trump called the operation to remove Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from power “incredible the way it worked out.”
“It was an incredible military maneuver,” Mr. Trump told CBS News. “It had a tremendous impact on everything. The impact has been incredible.”
When asked about his policy big picture, and whether it underscores the possible emergence of a “Trump doctrine,” the president said he’s not trying to pursue a specific ideology.
“No, it’s a doctrine of ‘don’t send drugs into our country.’ That’s what the doctrine is,” Mr. Trump replied. “Don’t send drugs into our country.”
Trump says he could meet opposition leader Machado next week
President Trump told Fox News’ Sean Hannity that Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado could be coming to visit him in Washington at some point next week.
“I look forward to saying hello to her. That would be a great honor,” the president said.
Machado has sought to cultivate a close relationship with Mr. Trump, dedicating her Nobel Peace Prize to him and praising the U.S. military’s operation to remove Maduro. But Mr. Trump declined to back Machado as a possible post-Maduro leader of Venezuela last weekend, saying: “She’s a very nice woman, but she doesn’t have the respect.”
Machado told CBS News earlier this week that Venezuelans are “very grateful” to Mr. Trump. Pressed on why he appeared to dismiss her as a political leader, she suggested there could be lingering worries about Venezuela’s stability and the risk that armed groups could “resist a peaceful transition.” But she called it a “united country” and argued most members of the military and police “support an orderly transition to democracy.”
In her own interview with Hannity on Tuesday, Machado indicated she may give Mr. Trump her Nobel.
“I certainly want to give it to him and share it with him,” she said.
When asked about that Thursday, Mr. Trump responded, “I’ve heard that she wants to do that, that would be a great honor.”
Trump says U.S could be running things in Venezuela for “much longer” than a year
President Trump says he thinks the U.S. could be overseeing things in Venezuela for “much longer” than a year, in the wake of Maduro’s capture.
He told The New York Times Wednesday evening that “only time will tell” how long Washington will be running Venezuela. Asked if that could last three months, six months, a year or longer, he responded that, “I would say much longer.”
Mr. Trump has said that he intends to temporarily “run” Venezuela since shortly after the mission to capture Maduro. The U.S. has left Maduro regime loyalist Delcy Rodriguez in place as interim president, but administration officials have said they plan to maintain leverage over the country’s government through U.S. restrictions on oil exports.
The president said he expects the U.S. to be taking Venezuelan oil for years.
“We will rebuild (Venezuela) in a very profitable way,” Mr. Trump told the Times. “We’re going to be using oil, and we’re going to be taking oil. We’re getting oil prices down, and we’re going to be giving money to Venezuela, which they desperately need.”
He added that the remaining leaders of Venezuela are “giving us everything that we feel is necessary” even though they had all been loyal to Maduro.
Senate advances war powers resolution
The Senate moved Thursday toward limiting President Trump’s ability to strike Venezuela, after the U.S. leader took unilateral action against the South American country.
After two previous unsuccessful attempts, the Senate voted 52 to 47 to advance a war powers resolution, days after the U.S. captured Maduro and his wife in a nighttime raid that came not only as a surprise to the former president, but also to Congress.
Five Republicans joined all Democrats in support of the measure. The GOP senators voting in favor include Todd Young of Indiana, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine, Rand Paul of Kentucky and Josh Hawley of Missouri.
Sen. Tim Kaine, a Virginia Democrat, introduced his latest resolution in early December. It would require “the removal of United States Armed Forces from hostilities within or against Venezuela that have not been authorized by Congress.”
Kaine said on the Senate floor Wednesday: “The indication from the administration [is] that this is not a few days or a few weeks, it’s likely a few years of U.S. occupation and involvement in this country.”
“This is not an arrest warrant. This is far bigger than that,” he said of the mission to capture Maduro and fly him to New York on drug charges.
Trump says war powers vote threatens national security
President Trump said Thursday that the Senate’s vote to restrict his ability to strike Venezuela could harm national security.
“This Vote greatly hampers American Self Defense and National Security, impeding the President’s Authority as Commander in Chief,” he said in a post on Truth Social.
He also called the War Powers Act unconstitutional and called out the handful of Republicans who supported the measure, saying other Senate Republicans should be ashamed of them.
Sen. Rand Paul, a Kentucky Republican who was among the five GOP senators who voted to advance the resolution, responded to the president by saying he sees the issue as “a constitutional debate” rather than “an anti-Donald Trump” stance.
“This debate is bigger than this particular president. I’ve had the same opinion under President Obama, President Biden, the last President Trump,” Paul told reporters outside the Capitol after the vote to push forward the resolution.
Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance said at a press conference that he spoke to the Republican senators who voted to advance the measure and, in large part, “their argument was based more on a legal technicality than any disagreement of policy.”
Sen. Schiff argues military operation in Venezuela was “really about oil”
After the Senate advanced Thursday’s war powers resolution, Democratic Sen. Adam Schiff of California told CBS News he believes it picked up GOP support because “the circumstances have changed” since similar measures failed last year.
He said that “it became very clear in the aftermath of this military operation that this was really about oil,” arguing that if the primary goal was just to apprehend Maduro, “it would not have required us to essentially commit to running a country for the indefinite future or seizing its oil.”
Even if the resolution ultimately passes the House and Senate, Mr. Trump is likely to veto it, Schiff acknowledged on CBS News’ “The Takeout.” But he argued that it could “force a real debate” about the president’s use of military force.
Schiff said he’s concerned “we could really see ourselves getting bogged down” in Venezuela, despite the lack of U.S. forces on the ground right now. He said that it could start with diplomatic staff returning to Caracas, followed by security to protect those staff, and “pretty soon, you’ve got a major presence in the country.”
“Let’s face it, there’s not going to be a way to run another country at a distance,” he said.
U.S. Chinook helicopter pilot was wounded in leg during Venezuela attack, officials say
A Chinook helicopter pilot who also helped plan the mission to capture Maduro was wounded multiple times in the leg during the operation, U.S. officials told CBS News on the condition of anonymity to discuss national security matters.
The helicopter the pilot was flying – a heavy, twin-rotor MH-47 Chinook– was struck by hostile fire during the operation. Although it was damaged, it remained airborne and completed its run.
The Chinook was the lead aircraft in a formation of U.S. Army helicopters tasked with inserting the assault team in the Maduro capture mission. They were carrying a force of Delta Force commandos as they slipped toward Caracas in the overnight operation – at first, largely unnoticed. As the aircraft drew closer to the heavily fortified compound where Maduro was believed to be holed up, the calm broke and Venezuelan defensive positions opened fire. U.S. helicopters responded with their own suppressive fire, according to the U.S. officials.
A Pentagon official told CBS News on Tuesday that two U.S. service members were still recovering from injuries sustained during the incursion, which the Defense Department dubbed Operation Absolute Resolve.
“They are receiving excellent medical care and are well on their way to recovery,” the Pentagon official said. “Five additional service members suffered injuries but have already returned to duty. The fact that this extremely complex and grueling mission was successfully executed with so few injuries is a testament to the expertise of our joint warriors.”
The New York Times first reported the details of the engagement with the Chinook and the pilot being wounded.
A WILHELM SCREAM Announce New Album Cheap Heat, Drop Vicious Lead Single “Midnight Ghost”
Long-running punk and hardcore trailblazers A Wilhelm Scream have officially announced their sixth full-length studio album, Cheap Heat, set for release on February 27 via Creator-Destructor Records.
Arriving just over three years after 2022’s Lose Your Delusion, Cheap Heat finds A Wilhelm Scream firing on all cylinders with ten adrenaline-fueled tracks that push their signature melodic hardcore sound into darker, more aggressive territory. The album draws heavily from the nihilistic menace of 2005’s Ruiner while channeling the technical ferocity and razor-sharp precision of 2007’s landmark Career Suicide, which is pretty evident in this first single.
Vocalist Nuno Pereira describes the record as a defining moment for the band: “This record, and the process of recording it, are both a testament to and a celebration of the firepower and dedication our band has for our music. It has vitriolic energy behind every vocal, soaring guitars relentlessly shredding, and that sinister tongue-in-cheek shit we specialize in. This will go down as our best work to date. Guaranteed.”
True to their reputation, A Wilhelm Scream continue to exist entirely on their own terms. Never chasing trends, breaking up, or softening their edges, the band remains one of punk’s most resilient underdogs. Cheap Heat embraces that identity fully, leaning into a darker narrative approach inspired by the wrestling term “cheap heat” — a villain drawing instant negative reaction from the crowd.
A Wilhelm Scream guitarist and vocalist Trevor Reilly explains the thematic shift: “Our last album was more personal and earnestly poetic in our way, so the only place to go next lyrically was back down in the gutter where we thrive. We embraced our dark side on this one. Dove into sociopathy, personality disorders, concepts of evil, nature vs nurture… There are no good guys here.”
Cheap Heat was produced and mixed by Trevor Reilly at the band’s hometown Anchor End Studio, with mastering handled by his father Joe Reilly at Black & Blue Mastering. The album also marks the first full-length appearance of Ben Murray (Light This City, Heartsounds, Darkness Everywhere) on second guitar, joining Pereira, Reilly, drummer Nicholas Angelini, and bassist Brian Robinson.
Group vocals across the record feature contributions from Jon Teves, Sean O’Brien, and the band themselves. The album artwork was created by Tyler DiPaola. Pre-order Cheap Heat here (and here on Bandcamp).
The first taste of Cheap Heat arrives with the lead single “Midnight Ghost,” accompanied by a music video directed by Mike Rivkees. Murray describes the track as an ideal introduction to the record’s darker tone: “‘Midnight Ghost’ is definitely one of my favorite songs off the upcoming record. It has a darker mood while still hitting listeners with tons of intensity and energy. We all wrote this one together in Trevor‘s studio, trading riffs and ideas naturally — it really captures the spirit of the record.”

Miami outlasts Ole Miss in CFP semi, will play for title at home
GLENDALE, Ariz. — Teams are told to never look ahead. But nobody could blame the Miami football team for peeking toward the future before the season even started.
The Hurricanes talked about it, perhaps not openly, but certainly privately. Open the season at home against Notre Dame. End the season at home in the national championship game.
What was once a dream is now reality after a thrilling 31-27 win over Ole Miss on Thursday night in the College Football Playoff semifinals at the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl behind an inspired effort from quarterback Carson Beck and a coach who has made it his mission to restore a proud Miami legacy.
While Mario Cristobal maintained his trademark intensity postgame, there is no denying the improbability of the run Miami has made to get to this point. After starting at No. 18 in the first CFP ranking on Nov. 3 following an overtime loss to SMU, Miami ended up the last team into the 12-team CFP field and has now reeled off three playoff wins to become the first team to play for a national championship in its home stadium since the BCS/CFP era began in 1998.
“When I saw everybody running on the field, it felt like a dream, like I was waiting on somebody to wake me up or something,” said linebacker Wesley Bissainthe, a Miami native who began his college career when Cristobal took over the program in 2022. “I’m a Miami guy, so playing in front of my peers, from where I’m from? It’s going to mean everything.”
The Hurricanes are no strangers to winning national titles on their home turf — three of their five national titles came at the Orange Bowl, their venerable former home field. That includes one in 1991 with Cristobal starting at offensive tackle. For more than two decades, Miami has wandered through the proverbial college football wilderness. It took a coach with Miami DNA to finally bring the Hurricanes to the precipice of a sixth national title.
It was not easy, though, because nothing about this season has been easy. Miami led for most of Thursday’s game, dominating in virtually every category, from time of possession to plays to rushing yards. But a few drives stalled out in the third quarter because of penalties, or other miscues, allowing Ole Miss back into the game.
What unfolded was a wild fourth quarter that featured four lead changes in the final seven minutes. With Miami legends Michael Irvin, Ray Lewis, Gino Torretta, Edgerrin James and others watching from the sideline, the Hurricanes scored on a 36-yard touchdown pass from Beck to dynamic freshman Malachi Toney with 5:04 remaining to retake a 24-19 lead.
But Trinidad Chambliss led Ole Miss right back down the field, aided in part by a pass interference penalty the officials called on Miami on a third-down incompletion — a flashback to the 2003 Fiesta Bowl, when a disputed pass interference cost Miami the national title. Chambliss threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Dae’Quan Wright with 3:13 remaining to pull the Rebels back ahead.
Miami had not trailed that late in the fourth quarter since a loss to Louisville at home in October, a game in which Beck threw four interceptions. Beck used that game as a turning point to his season, and in that moment against the Rebels, with the game on the line, he calmly led a 15-play, 75-yard drive — ending with a 3-yard touchdown run.
“It almost seems like the tougher it gets, the better we play,” Cristobal said. “And it’s a testament to them, to their resilience and their will.”
Offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson called what Beck has done “an epic story.” It was one year ago that Beck agreed to transfer to Miami, with an elbow injury that kept him out of practice until fall camp began.
“He deserved that moment,” Dawson said. “It was up to him to rise up and take it, and he did. It probably silenced a lot of critics.”
With Miami in the lead, Lewis looked toward the crowd and raised his arms, pumping up the raucous Miami fans. When it was all over and the final seconds ticked off, the alumni celebrated with the players — present and past, all with shared purpose. A brotherhood forged through difficult moments, like the one Miami persevered through Thursday night.
“It has been a long time coming. Once Coach Cristobal got here, we brought back the old Miami ways,” James said. “To get into the playoffs and then end up in the championship in Miami — there’s nothing better than that. It’s laid out for us.”
Since the loss to SMU, Miami has reeled off seven straight wins. But Miami has been on the road for five straight. Following its final home game of the regular season against NC State on Nov. 15, safety Keionte Scott reiterated what had been discussed in the preseason: “We’re not finished with Hard Rock.”
“We always knew we were special, and we knew if they let us in [the playoff], that a lot of teams were going to be in trouble,” Bissainthe said.
Offensive lineman Anez Cooper, another player who began his career at Miami when Cristobal was hired, said he cried as the final seconds ticked off the clock: “I’m happy we made it back home.”
New Mexico school delays and closings

LIST: New Mexico school delays and closings
YOU CAN COUNT ON. KOAT ACTION SEVEN NEWS AT NINE STARTS RIGHT NOW. AND TONIGHT, A BLAST OF WINTER WEATHER HITTING NEW MEXICO. PARTS OF THE STATE SEEING THUNDERSTORMS, HAIL AND SNOW. THAT’S THE SOUND OF THUNDER AT OUR STATION IN NORTHEAST ALBUQUERQUE THIS EVENING. THE RADAR STILL ACTIVE AT THIS HOUR? KOAT 7 WEATHER TEAM WARNS YOU THIS WAS COMING, AND WE’RE ALREADY SEEING DELAYS AND CLOSURES FOR THE MORNING. THOSE ARE SCROLLING AT THE BOTTOM OF YOUR SCREEN. AND JASON MCNABB IS IN GALLUP, CHIEF METEOROLOGIST BYRON MORTON WITH MORE ON TRAVEL CONDITIONS. BUT FIRST, METEOROLOGIST OLGA BREESE WITH WHAT’S HAPPENING RIGHT NOW. YEAH, IT’S BEEN QUITE A NIGHT. WE’VE SEEN THESE SNOWFLAKES FLYING. TEMPERATURES DROPPING. WE’RE AT OR NEAR THAT FREEZING POINT HERE IN THE ALBUQUERQUE METRO, AND WE’RE GOING TO KEEP IT CHILLY OVERNIGHT DOWN INTO THE 20S. THAT MEANS MORE PRECIPITATION AS WE MOVE THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT COULD FALL AS SOME SNOW OR SNOW MIX. AND THAT COULD COMPLICATE THE MORNING COMMUTE. RIGHT NOW, THE RADAR IS QUIETING DOWN IN THE GENERAL ALBUQUERQUE METRO. NOTICE EVERYTHING IS SHIFTING OFF TOWARD THE EAST. WE HAVE SOME SNOW FALLING IN THE EAST MOUNTAINS, EVEN SOME MIXED PRECIPITATION AND RAIN DOWN TOWARD THE SOUTHERN ZONES, WHERE THE TEMPERATURES ARE A LITTLE BIT MILDER. WE’LL CONTINUE TO SEE BANDS OF MOISTURE PULLING THROUGH THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT, WHICH MEANS WE ARE NOT OVER WITH THIS JUST YET. WE HAVE SEEN SOME PRETTY NICE SNOW TOTALS MORE THAN AN INCH IN AREAS OFF TOWARD THE WEST EASTERN FLANK. NOW JUST STARTING TO GET IN ON THAT ACTION, AND WE’VE EVEN GOT ABOUT AN INCH JUST NORTH OF SANTA FE. SO THIS IS GOING TO CONTINUE, ESPECIALLY AS WE GO THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT. WE’LL KEEP THE CLOUDS AROUND. LIGHT RAIN MIXING WITH SNOW HERE IN THE ALBUQUERQUE METRO AND OCCASIONAL WIND GUSTS WILL BE POSSIBLE AS WE MOVE THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT. NOW THIS SYSTEM IS GOING TO SHIFT OFF TOWARD THE EAST, AND THAT COULD BE PROBLEMATIC TOMORROW MORNING FOR THE NORTHERN AND EASTERN ZONES. RIGHT NOW, MANY OF US HAVE ALREADY HIT THAT FREEZING THRESHOLD. WE’RE STARTING TO SEE THE TEMPERATURES DIP DOWN INTO THE 30S AND 20S. AND AS WE MOVE THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT, THIS FRONT IS GOING TO BE VERY SLOW TO PUSH ON OUT. SO THAT MEANS COOL MORNING START. YOU MIGHT WANT TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF A LITTLE FLEX TIME TOMORROW IF YOU DON’T HAVE TO GET UP OUT AND ABOUT EARLY IN THE MORNING. WE’VE SEEN RAIN AND SNOW COMING DOWN ALL EVENING AND THE SLICK ROADS FORCING DEPUTIES TO CLOSE BOTH DIRECTIONS OF I-40 NEAR THE ROUTE 66 CASINO. THIS IS LIVE ON I-40 NEAR 98. THE ASHLEY AND DOUG. THERE’S JUST A LITTLE BIT OF SNOW LEFT ON THE GROUND, BUT THE REAL STORY HERE IS YOU ALL JUST MENTIONED IS THE ROADS. TAKE A LOOK AT THIS. THOSE ROADS ARE WET AND SLICK HERE. THESE CARS HERE ARE HEADED TOWARDS I-40. AND BECAUSE OF THOSE DRIVING CONDITIONS, THE COMMUNICATION CENTER FOR 911 IN BERNALILLO COUNTY SAYS THEY’RE GETTING A LOT OF CALLS, ESPECIALLY IN THE EAST MOUNTAINS. OFFICIALS SAY THEY MAY TELL PEOPLE TO CALL BACK LATER BECAUSE OF THAT INCREASED CALL VOLUME. IF WHAT YOU’RE CALLING FOR IS NOT AN EMERGENCY, WE REALLY LIKE TO KEEP OUR RESPONDERS AVAILABLE FOR THOSE EMERGENCY SITUATIONS, SO WE DON’T WANT THEM TO BE GOING OUT TO CALL SLICK AND HOLD FOR LATER, BECAUSE THE ROADS ARE ICY AND DANGEROUS FOR EVERYONE, INCLUDING OUR RESPONDERS. WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY CAN GET TO THE CITIZENS IN A TIMELY MANNER. AND WE’VE POPPED UP THE NON-EMERGENCY NUMBER THERE ON YOUR SCREEN. IT’S 505798 7000. AND THE BERNALILLO COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE IS ALSO SAYING THAT IF YOU HAVE AT&T, YOU MAY BE HAVING TROUBLE REACHING 911. THEY SAY THEY’RE ACTIVELY WORKING WITH THE COMPANY TO RESOLVE THAT ISSUE. THIS IS WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE TONIGHT AT TAOS SKI VALLEY. RED RIVER AND SKI SANTA FE GALLUP GETTING HIT HARD BY THE STORM. JASON MCNABB SHOWS US HOW THEY’RE PREPARING FOR VERY DIFFICULT DRIVING CONDITIONS. I’M HERE AT WE THE PEOPLE PARK JUST ON THE NORTH SIDE OF I-40 HERE IN GALLUP, AND WE SAW A LOT OF SNOW ALL DAY. IN FACT, ENOUGH TO BE ABLE TO MAKE A SNOWBALL OUT OF IT. THAT’S HOW MUCH WE SAW WHEN WE WERE DRIVING IN THIS MORNING. IT WAS ACTUALLY ENOUGH SNOW ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF TOWN THAT WE SAW WHITEOUT CONDITIONS IN THAT SNOW AND SLEET MIXTURE KIND OF CONTINUED ON AND OFF THROUGHOUT THE DAY. NOW, WE DID SPEAK TO A LOT OF PEOPLE DOWN HERE IN GALLUP, INCLUDING PEOPLE JUST RUNNING ERRANDS AND ALSO SOME TRUCK DRIVERS THAT GOT OFF OF I-40 TO TAKE A BREAK FROM THE WEATHER CONDITIONS AND PARK. THEY SAID WHILE THESE WEATHER CONDITIONS WEREN’T THE MOST FAVORABLE TO THEM, THEY STILL WEREN’T THAT CONCERNED. I HAD TO CHOP WOOD THIS MORNING AND BRING IN SOME MORE. SO WE JUST HAD THE FIRE GOING ALL NIGHT. AND THAT’S BEEN A TOUGH TOO, BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, THE WEATHER AND EVERYTHING GOING EAST TO WEST. I’M GOING EAST, I’M GOING TO PHILADELPHIA TOWARDS ALBUQUERQUE. YEAH. YOU’RE WORRIED ABOUT WHAT MIGHT BE LURKING AHEAD OUT THERE? NO, NO, NOT AT ALL. AND WE’LL CONTINUE COVERAGE OF THE EXTREME WEATHER, INCLUDING HERE IN GALLUP ON KOAT ACTION SEVEN NEWS. MORE IN THE MORNING FOR NOW. REPORTING FROM GALLUP. I’M JASON MCNABB, KOAT ACTION SEVEN NEWS. A LIVE LOOK AT ROAD CONDITIONS ACROSS OUR STATE. THE AREA IS HIGHLIGHTED THERE IN YELLOW. MEAN DRIVING CONDITIONS ARE DIFFICULT. YOU CAN SEE THAT ACROSS THE METRO AND IN NORTHERN NEW MEXICO. NOW WE GO TO CHIEF METEOROLOGIST BYRON MORTON. HE HAS YOUR WINTER TRAVEL FORECAST. HEY THERE SHELLY, LET’S TALK ABOUT THOSE MAJOR ROADWAYS THAT ARE GOING TO BE IMPACTED AND DANGEROUS, POSSIBLY FOR THAT MORNING COMMUTE TOMORROW MORNING. OF COURSE, WE ALREADY HEARD THE I-40 CLOSED WEST OF ALBUQUERQUE, BUT THAT GALLUP TO GRAND CORRIDOR OF I-40 ALSO GOING TO BE SLICK AND HAZARDOUS. WE HEARD THAT FROM JASON AND THE EAST MOUNTAINS OUT TOWARDS CLINES CORNERS FOR TOMORROW MORNING. LA BAJADA TO SANTA FE, I-25 NORTH TO LAS VEGAS AND RATON PASS. ALSO GOING TO BE DICEY. AND 285 HIGHWAY 285 FROM SANTA FE ESPANOLA TO PIEDRAS AND HIGHWAY 550 CUBA TO BLOOMFIELD UP TOWARD THE AZTEC AREA AS WELL. SO THIS IS THE ROAD CONDITION FORECAST AT MIDNIGHT, WHERE YOU SEE THE BLUE. THOSE ARE SNOWY ROADS, ICY ROADS, AND OF COURSE, GREEN. THOSE ARE WET ROADS. AND AS WE GO TOWARD TOMORROW MORNING, A LOT MORE BLUE ON THE MAP AND EVEN SOME PINK OUT THERE ACROSS NORTH AND WEST NEW MEXICO, WHERE THOSE ROADS COULD BE ICY AND DICEY IF THEY HAVE NOT BEEN TREATED ALREADY. AS WE GO TO THE AFTERNOON, NOTICE THAT THE BLUE ROADS SHRINK AND WE’LL SEE MORE OF THE GREEN AS THOSE TEMPERATURES RISE IN THE ROAD, SURFACES BEGIN TO WARM UP. IN ADDITION TO ALL OF THAT, WE’LL HAVE THE POTENTIAL OF SOME AREAS OF BLOWING SNOW. COULD BE SOME GROUND BLIZZARD CONDITIONS, OR AT LEAST CLOSE TO CLOUD GROUND BLIZZARD CONDITIONS AROUND RATON INTO CLAYTON. SO JUST AVOID TRAVEL IN THAT AREA OF THE STATE IF YOU CAN. IT WOULD BE A SAFE THING TO DO. WE’LL BE BACK IN JUST A LITTLE BIT WITH A LOOK AT THE REST OF THE STORM AND THE COLDEST TEMPERATURES SO FAR THIS SEASON. BUT FIRST, BACK TO DOUG AND SHELLY AND STAY UP TO DATE WITH THE LATEST CONDITIONS IN YOUR AREA. DOWNLOAD THE FREE KOAT APP AND TURN ON ALERTS. PLUS, FIND SCHOOL CLOSINGS AND DELAYS. Russia says it used new Oreshnik ballistic missile against Ukraine
Russia said Friday it has used the new Oreshnik ballistic missile along with other weapons in a massive strike on Ukraine.
Ukrainian officials said four people were killed and at least 22 wounded in the capital overnight. Russia didn’t say where Oreshnik hit, but Russian media and military bloggers said it targeted a huge underground natural gas storage in Ukraine’s western Lviv region.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said the attack was a retaliation to what Moscow said was a Ukrainian drone strike on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s residence last month. Ukraine and U.S. President Donald Trump have rejected the Russian claim of the attack on Putin’s residence.
Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadoviy said that Russia struck critical infrastructure with a ballistic missile, but didn’t give details. He said the missile traveled at a speed of 13,000 kilometers (more than 8,000 miles) per hour, and that the specific type of rocket was being investigated.
Russia first tested the Oreshnik — Russian for hazelnut tree — to strike a Ukrainian factory in November 2024. Putin has bragged that Oreshnik’s multiple warheads plunge at speeds of up to Mach 10 and can’t be intercepted, and that several of them used in a conventional strike could be as devastating as a nuclear attack. Oreshnik can also carry nuclear weapons.
The Russian leader has warned the West that Russia could use the Oreshnik next against allies of Kyiv that allowed it to strike inside Russia with their longer-range missiles.
After the overnight strike on Ukraine’s capital, those killed included an emergency medical aid worker, said Kyiv City Military Administration head Tymur Tkachenko. Five rescue workers sustained injuries while responding to the site of ongoing attacks, said Ukraine’s security service.
Several districts in Kyiv were hit in the attack, said Kyiv City Military Administration head Tymur Tkachenko. In the Desnyanskyi district a drone crashed onto the roof of a multi-story building. At another address in the same district the first two floors of a residential building were damaged.
In Dnipro district, parts of a drone damaged a multistory building and a fire broke out.
Running water and electricity were disrupted in parts of the capital as a result of the attack, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.
The attack took place just hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy alerted the nation about Russia’s intentions for a large-scale offensive. He said that Russia aimed to take advantage of the frigid weather in the capital, making roads and streets perilously icy.
Chris Stapleton Breaks Country Music’s Winter Touring Rule
Chris Stapleton is attempting something this weekend in Florida that most country artists shy away from: performing a large-scale, full-band, large-venue show in early January.
Where is Chris Stapleton Playing This Weekend?
Stapleton has two shows this weekend (Jan. 10 and Jan. 11) on his All-American Roadshow tour, both at Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida.
Both shows are completely sold out, suggesting that he may successfully break country music’s unwritten winter touring rule.

Even though these performances are makeup dates for rescheduled October shows, it’s still a bold move for Stapleton to book large-scale shows this early in the year.

Even if you go back years — even decades — you won’t find another major touring country artist with a full-band show booked at a major venue on or before Jan. 10.
What is Country’s Winter Rule?
Historically, most major country tours don’t begin until mid- to late January or later. For example, in 2026, Blake Shelton, Rascal Flatts, Trace Adkins, and others have tour or residency dates starting around Jan. 15 or beyond.
Since 2015, mass-market country headliners generally have not kicked off major national tours before Jan. 10. Instead, the pattern has been for tours to begin in mid-January or later.
That suggests 2026 could be the first recent year a major country artist opens a tour that early on the calendar — at least among the genre’s biggest acts.
If any country artist can pull off this feat, it’s the “You Should Probably Leave” singer, who seems to win nearly every award at every awards show and is widely regarded as one of the genre’s top vocalists.
If you can’t make it to either show, you can always load up a playlist of Stapleton’s biggest hits and imagine being there in person.

Carson Beck books Miami’s home CFP title game date with legacy-defining final drive

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Carson Beck looked left, he looked right and then he saw a clear path out of the desert and back home.
Nearly one year to the day he surprised the sport — and irked Georgia fans — by reneging on the NFL Draft to instead transfer to Miami, the quarterback scrambled three yards into the end zone and scored the decisive touchdown against Ole Miss with 18 seconds remaining in the Fiesta Bowl. The legacy-defining play lifted the Hurricanes into the national championship game for the first time in 24 years.
“Man,” Beck said, “what an unbelievable year. It was never easy. It was never perfect. There were a lot of ups and downs. There was a lot of adversity that not only I faced individually, but that we faced as a team.”
The Hurricanes (13-2) traversed arguably the most difficult path in the playoffs, defeating three higher-seeded teams to advance to the championship. Their reward? They will be the first team in the 27-year era of the BCS/CFP to play for a national title inside their home stadium.
“We haven’t been home in a long time,” Miami coach Mario Cristobal said. “We’ve been on the road for five straight games.”
Miami keeps winning because it has proven to be the most physical, violent team remaining in the playoff. The Hurricanes have bullied every opponent in the trenches. On Thursday night, they played keep-away from Ole Miss’ high-powered, fast-paced offense — running 88 plays over 41 minutes, the largest time-of-possession disparity in CFP history. Miami converted a playoff-record 11 third downs, including a critical completion on the final drive, and rushed for 191 yards behind a ferocious offensive line.
Beck led back-to-back, 75-yard touchdown drives to cap the 31-27 win against No. 6 Ole Miss after coming up scoreless on five straight possessions.
“it almost seems like the tougher it gets, the better we play,” Cristobal said. “And it’s a testament to them — to their resilience, and their will.”
Beck connected on seven of his final 12 passes for 85 yards after throwing a momentum-changing interception that helped set up a go-ahead Ole Miss touchdown. He fired back with a 36-yard touchdown pass to freshman phenom Malachi Toney and scored again on his game-winning scramble.
“I’m sure a lot of people thought we were screwed there a lot of times. Then again, we’ve got an absolute game-changer at quarterback,” Miami center James Brockermeyer said. “He’s the reason we got it done at the end.”
Beck has been one of the sport’s most hot-button players in recent years, a popular target for critics and rival fans. His path has included an interception-laden final season at Georgia that ended with an injury in the SEC Championship Game and an internet-friendly relationship with Miami women’s basketball player Hanna Cavinder that drew headlines and social media attention. Through it all, the quarterback navigated landmines — some of his own making — to reach the national championship game for the third time in his career, but for the first time as a starting quarterback.
He sat behind Stetson Bennett as the Bulldogs reached the title game in 2021 and 2022, but couldn’t do the same as the starter in 2023 and 2024, raising questions about his leadership and talent. In his final season, he threw 12 interceptions (the most by a Georgia quarterback in 12 years) and his receivers dropped 30 passes, the most in the FBS.
“He should feel vindicated,” Miami offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson told CBS Sports. “His record against top-10 opponents is as good as anybody, and he deals with a lot of criticism from a lot of people. He’s a little bit misunderstood.”
Indeed, the numbers paint the picture of an elite competitor. Beck enters the national championship game 37-5 as a starter, the second-most wins over a three-year period in FBS history. He’s an unmatched 16-3 against ranked opponents, which includes seven wins this season, and he has led eight comebacks in the fourth quarter.
“This was his moment and he stepped up,” Dawson said, as he watched Beck enjoy a shower of gold confetti inside State Farm Stadium. “Good for him. He deserves it. He silenced a lot of critics, but we’ve got one more to go.”
Indeed, Beck is a popular target, because of his notoriety and his reportedly rich NIL contract ($4 million and potentially $6 million with incentives). No one cried when his luxury vehicle was stolen in the spring. If anything, they made him a punchline. They obsessed over his dating life, poking fun at him when his relationship with Cavinder ended.
Still, Miami coaches and players share stories of a misunderstood superstar, one they admittedly once believed seemed aloof before he arrived in Miami last January.
“He really doesn’t care too much about what people say about him,” said Toney, who caught five passes for 81 yards and a touchdown. “He’s about his business.”
“There’s all these weird narratives about the guy,” Brockermeyer said. “You meet him, and you’re just like, what the crap are these people talking about? He’s an awesome dude, a hell of a competitor, a great teammate and a great friend. I love the guy to death.”
Beck absorbed four sacks, but was more willing to run than at any point this season. He finished with minus-6 yards but took off seven times, including the scramble to win the game, his first rushing score since Week 3. Dawson said scrambling has been a point of emphasis for Beck in the playoffs.
Up next is a happy flight home to Miami, and a few more practices at the famed Greentree practice fields in Coral Gables. Miami awaits Indiana or Oregon in the national championship game at Hard Rock Stadium.
Funny, three of Miami’s five previous national titles were secured by winning games at the Orange Bowl. Now they will try to christen their newer digs with a sixth championship — thanks in part to a new quarterback, who found acceptance and understanding in South Florida.
“We really banded together and showed that we believe in connection; that we just don’t fake it,” Beck said. “This team is really a family. If our team really wasn’t like that, I don’t know if this win happens tonight.”
