BBC to seek dismissal of Trump’s $10 billion defamation lawsuit in Florida court
London — The BBC, Britain’s public broadcaster, will file a motion to dismiss a $10 billion lawsuit brought by President Trump over a 2024 documentary that spliced parts of his Jan. 6, 2021, speech together, according to a document filed with the court on Monday. The BBC argues that the court does not have jurisdiction to hear the case, and that Mr. Trump’s attorneys are wrong to claim he suffered damages due to the documentary.
The suit, filed last month by Mr. Trump’s legal team in the Southern District of Florida, includes one count of defamation and one count of violating a Florida trade practices law. Mr. Trump’s legal team is seeking $5 billion in damages for each count, for a total of $10 billion, court filings reviewed by CBS News show.
The 33-page complaint filed by Mr. Trump’s attorneys in December accuses the BBC of publishing “a false, defamatory, deceptive, disparaging, inflammatory, and malicious depiction” of him in a documentary for the BBC’s “Panorama” program, which was broadcast in the U.K. a week before the 2024 U.S. election.
One portion of the documentary focused on Mr. Trump’s words and actions leading up to the riots at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

The lawsuit claims the BBC “intentionally and maliciously sought to fully mislead its viewers” by “splicing together” two clips of the same speech that Mr. Trump gave to supporters in Washington before the riots began.
Mr. Trump’s legal team claims the two clips were 55 minutes apart, and the BBC’s edit omitted “his statement calling for peace” in the same address. The president had directed his supporters to go to Capitol Hill, where lawmakers were soon to vote to confirm election results in favor of former President Joe Biden.
In the latest court documents released Monday, the BBC’s legal team said it will argue that the Florida court should dismiss the suit because the “defamation case arises out of a documentary that Defendants the British Broadcasting Corporation (“the BBC”), BBC Studios Distribution Ltd., and BBC Studios Productions Ltd. did not create in Florida, produce in Florida, or air in Florida.”
Attorneys for the BBC will also argue that the case did not cause damage to or defame Mr. Trump, noting the fact that he was re-elected after the documentary was broadcast in Britain, and that Mr. Trump won the state of Florida decisively.
The BBC’s legal team also argues that a claim made in Mr. Trump’s suit, alleging that the documentary was made available in the U.S. via a streaming service, is inaccurate.
“Plaintiff alleges that the Documentary was available in the U.S. on the streaming service BritBox. But simply clicking on the link that Plaintiff cites for this point shows it is not on BritBox. Nor was it ever available on BritBox,” according to the filing submitted by law firm Ballard Spahr, which is representing the BBC.
Mr. Trump’s legal team has not provided evidence that the documentary was created “with actual malice,” Ballard Spahr said Monday.
“As we have made clear previously, we will be defending this case. We are not going to make further comment on ongoing legal proceedings,” a BBC spokesperson told CBS News on Tuesday when asked about the organization’s move to have the suit dismissed.
A spokesman for Mr. Trump’s legal team said in a statement: “The BBC is liable to President Trump for intentionally and maliciously defaming him by distorting and manipulating his speech. No amount of attempted legal maneuvers can change that fact. President Trump will continue to hold accountable the BBC and all those who traffic in fake news.”
The BBC formally apologized to Mr. Trump in November, saying in a statement that the edited soundbite in the Panorama documentary had given, “the mistaken impression that President Trump had made a direct call for violent action.”
“While the BBC sincerely regrets the manner in which the video clip was edited, we strongly disagree there is a basis for a defamation claim,” the BBC’s legal team said at the time, adding that it had “no plans to rebroadcast the documentary ‘Trump: A Second Chance?’ on any BBC platforms.”

Eagles remove first-year OC Kevin Patullo after wild card loss to depleted 49ers
Kevin Patullo will no longer be the Philadelphia Eagles‘ offensive coordinator after a rocky first year in the role. Nick Sirianni released a statement on Tuesday confirming Patullo had been relieved of those duties following Philly’s 23-19 loss to the 49ers in their wild card game on Sunday.
“I have decided to make a change at offensive coordinator. I met with Kevin today to discuss the difficult decision, as he is a great coach who has my utmost respect. He has been integral to this team’s success over the last five years, not only to the on-field product but behind the scenes as a valued leader for our players and organization. I have no doubt he will continue to have a successful coaching career. Ultimately, when we fall short of our goals that responsibility lies on my shoulders.”
The Eagles finished the season in the bottom half of the league in passing and rushing productivity, and were also in the middle of the pack in terms of efficiency and success rate. Given the investment into the offense by the Eagles’ front office and the success they had a year ago running the football en route to a Super Bowl victory, the step back the team took following the departure of Kellen Moore and Patullo taking over as offensive coordinator was too much to ignore in Philly.
Eagles fans lobbed plenty of criticism (and eggs) at Patullo throughout the year, and some of the Eagles’ star players voiced their frustrations with the offense’s struggles — most notably star receiver A.J. Brown. However, there is a question of how much of the Eagles’ offensive woes truly rest on the shoulders of Patullo, and how much improvement can be expected next year with Jalen Hurts still under center.
The Eagles have struggled to find a permanent answer at offensive coordinator ever since Shane Steichen left to take the Colts‘ top coaching job. Brian Johnson and Patullo failed to consistently reach the heights the Eagles hoped to hit, while Moore was able to get the most out of the running game in a Super Bowl winning year before becoming the Saints coach. Many of the same concerns with the passing game have been consistent across coordinators, which points to offensive limitations being dictated at least in part by the quarterback play.
Even so, Sirianni and the Eagles will hit the coordinator carousel again and hope to find someone who can maximize their talented roster — even with the expectations that changes are likely coming there as well.

Costa Rica’s security director says plot to assassinate president uncovered
SAN JOSÉ, Costa Rica — Costa Rica’s national security chief on Tuesday revealed details of an alleged plot to assassinate President Rodrigo Chaves ahead of presidential and legislative elections.
Jorge Torres, director of the Intelligence and National Security Directorate, told journalists about the plot allegations as he prepared to file a formal complaint at the public prosecutor’s office.
“What we received is confidential information that I would like to put on record in the complaint. I don’t want to go into detail, but I would simply like to tell you that it concerns the life of the president of the Republic,” Torres told local media.
Torres said a call was received from a woman who reported a supposed plot against Chaves, adding a payment had been made to a hitman. Torres also reported that security was being reinforced for the conservative populist leader, who has sought to present himself as a politician who is tough-on-crime.
Torres spoke as El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele, who has gained fame for his controversial security crackdown, was scheduled to visit the country.
On Wednesday, Chaves is scheduled to lay the cornerstone of a new “ mega-prison ” that Costa Rica plans to build, modeled on a facility built by Bukele.
Costa Rica will hold presidential and legislative elections on Feb. 1. While Chaves is ineligible to run for reelection, the ruling party’s Laura Fernández is among the presidential candidates.
MOTOGRATER Appears To Have Reunited With Vocalist IVAN MOODY
Ivan Moody appears to have all but confirmed long-swirling rumors of his return to Motograter, sending shockwaves through the metal community and reigniting interest in the band that helped shape his early career.
Speculation began earlier this week when Michael “The Kidd” Stewart, a former Motograter member known for performing the band’s infamous namesake instrument, claimed on social media that Moody was back in the band. While Motograter have yet to issue an official statement, the Five Finger Death Punch frontman has now added his own fuel to the fire.
Taking to social media, Moody shared a post indicating he plans to hang out with members of Motograter this coming weekend. Though he stopped short of explicitly confirming a full-scale reunion, fans were quick to interpret the message as a strong signal that something is brewing behind the scenes.
Motograter‘s history is famously on-again, off-again. Originally formed in 1995, the industrial metal outfit first split in 2005, only to reunite for a one-off show in 2006. A more sustained comeback followed from 2008 to 2011, before another breakup and yet another reunion spanning 2013 to 2018.
Across that turbulent timeline, Motograter have released just two full-length albums — their self-titled debut in 2003 and Desolation in 2017 — alongside three EPs issued between 1998 and 2009.
The band’s most high-profile era came between 2002 and 2005, when Ivan Moody served as frontman. His vocals feature prominently on Motograter‘s 2003 self-titled album, which gained mainstream exposure through placements on soundtracks for NASCAR Thunder 2004 and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Shortly after leaving Motograter, Moody went on to global success with Five Finger Death Punch, fronting the multi-platinum groove metal juggernaut.
As of now, there’s still no official confirmation from Motograter regarding new music, live shows, or a lineup announcement. But with a former member openly teasing a reunion and Moody himself hinting at renewed connections, the possibility of a Motograter comeback — with its most famous frontman — suddenly feels very real.
