Dolly Parton Releasing New Collab With Reba, Lainey + More


Dolly Parton fans have been hoping for new music from the country legend in 2026, and they’re getting it…well, sort of.

On Tuesday (Jan. 13), Parton announced a new version of her classic ballad “Light of a Clear Blue Morning,” due out on Friday (Jan. 16.)

She embraced the song’s message of hope and courage in her announcement, sharing an image of herself with a guitar slung across her back, watching the sun come up over a mountain range.

But Parton’s not embarking on this new musical chapter alone. She enlisted an all-star, all-female cast to join her.

The new version of “Light of a Clear Blue Morning” will feature Reba McEntire, Lainey Wilson, Miley Cyrus and Queen Latifah.

All four are artists that Parton’s worked with in the past in different areas of her professional and personal life.

What Is the Story Behind Dolly Parton’s “Light of a Clear Blue Morning”?

Parton originally released the song in 1977 as part of her New Harvest…First Gathering album. It deals with imagery of watching the sun break through after a dark, difficult night, bringing rejuvenation and hope for a bright day ahead.

It’s a very meaningful song to her. According to Parton’s website, she considers “Light of a Clear Blue Morning” as “her song of deliverance,” and it represents her musical epiphany that “when the Lord has set you free ‘Ye are free indeed.'”

Parton wrote “Light of a Clear Blue Morning” while driving home after one of her final business meetings with Porter Wagoner, the singer’s musical and business partner for much of her early career.

She parted ways with Wagoner in 1974 to focus on her solo career and famously wrote “I Will Always Love You” as her parting message to him. By contrast, “Light of a Clear Blue Morning” was a look toward a more hopeful future after a difficult personal break.

How Does Dolly Parton Know Her New “Light of a Clear Blue Morning” Collaborators?

Each one represents an important, joyful aspect of Parton’s career as a solo artist and as a woman in the music industry.

Of course, McEntire and Parton have towering parallel careers in country music; McEntire idolized Parton as a young musical hopeful and broke into stardom some 10 years after Parton did.

Shockingly, they never recorded together until 2021 (a new version of Parton and Linda Davis’ “Does He Love You,”) but they’ve frequently shared festival bills and hobnobbed at industry events over the years.

Wilson is a younger star who’s been open about her Dolly Parton influence: She even put out a song called “WWDD,” which stands for “What Would Dolly Do.”

They’ve gotten to know each other over the past few years, and Parton even recorded a special message to be played at Wilson’s Grand Ole Opry induction.

Parton’s Miley Cyrus connection is well known (she’s the younger pop star’s godmother), but the most surprising name on this song’s collaborator’s list is Queen Latifah. A Grammy-winning rapper and songwriter, Latifah doesn’t appear to have much in common with Parton other than a long, illustrious career.

But yep, they’ve worked together — and not just briefly!

This connection comes via Parton’s foray into acting. Latifah is also an accomplished actor, and the two co-starred in the 2012 film Joyful Noise. The following year, Parton appeared as a guest on The Queen Latifah Show and even rapped during her appearance.

Last July, Parton admitted she wasn’t feeling up to writing new songs since the death of her husband, Carl Dean, in March 2025.

But it’s easy to imagine that Parton might be revisiting this song — with help from some women who’ve been checkpoints for her in her career — as she looks toward a future that still contains much joy and hope, even after acute heartache.

Kansas upsets No. 2 Iowa State, hands Cyclones first loss of season



After Kansas lost to West Virginia on Saturday to fall to 1-12 in Big 12 play, Jayhawks coach coach Bill Self ripped his team, saying “we suck right now.” Self’s assessment didn’t age well Tuesday when the unranked Jayhawks put on their best showing of the season and upset No. 2 Iowa State 84-63 in emphatic fashion at Allen Fieldhouse to hand the Cyclones (16-1, 3-1 Big 12) their first loss of the season.

Kansas (12-5, 2-2) went wire-to-wire with the win and dominated on both ends with a season-high 12 made 3-pointers on the offensive end while forcing 12 turnovers on the other end from an ISU team typically careful with the ball. Every major piece clicked for KU including star freshman guard Darryn Peterson, who had 16 points and five boards. Fellow backcourt mate Tre White added 19 points — a game-high — of his own. Fifteen of White’s 19 points came from the 3-point line.

The dominant win for Kansas is more of the same vs. an Iowa State program it has dominated historically and recently. The win extended KU’s winning streak vs. the Cyclones in games played in Lawrence to eight games, and improved its record in the last 11 meetings to 8-3. KU now holds a 100-16 record vs. ISU in games played in Lawrence.

Self’s proclamation over the weekend that his team sucks right now was not tongue-in-cheek — but it was made with a heavy emphasis on the latter part of that statement. 

“But it’s right now,” Self said. “Everybody goes through ebbs and flows in the season. … We’ve got to flip it.”

It’s just one game — an impressive one, to be clear, but still just one game — so we can’t declare KU flipped. Not yet. But KU dominated one of the best teams in college basketball in a way that cannot be ignored. For a KU team that has been riding a roller coaster much of the season, this could serve as an inflection point to get its season back on track. 

For Iowa State, it loses the chance to be the last remaining unbeaten team (only four remain) and it takes a tally in the loss column — but there is no reason to panic. The Cyclones didn’t have their best stuff Tuesday. Kansas did. It happens. 

It was ugly, to be sure, and out of character. ISU’s mighty defense gave up 50.8% shooting from the field to Kansas, 12-of-24 shooting from 3-point range and forced only nine turnovers. No team has made ISU look more fallible this season than Kansas.

Despite the loss, ISU is still tracking toward a potential No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and remains a real contender in a wide-open Big 12.

Elissa Slotkin says she’s under investigation after video about refusing illegal orders


Sen. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., is being investigated by federal prosecutors after she participated in a video with other Democratic lawmakers urging members of the military and the intelligence community not to follow illegal orders, her office confirmed Tuesday.

Slotkin said in an interview with The New York Times that she found out about the probe from the office of Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia. Slotkin’s office confirmed her remarks to NBC News but did not elaborate.

“Facts matter little, but the threat matters quite a bit,” Slotkin told the Times. “The threat of legal action; the threat to your family; the threat to your staff; the threat to you.”

Pirro’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday night.

Slotkin, a former CIA officer who served in Iraq, is the second lawmaker who participated in the video to face an investigation following its release in November.

Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., a retired Navy captain and astronaut, on Monday sued over Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s effort to censure and demote him for what the Defense Department described as “seditious statements” in the video. Kelly called the Pentagon’s move “unlawful and unconstitutional.”

Trump previously blasted the Democratic members of Congress in the video, accusing them of committing “seditious behavior.” He said in November that their actions were “punishable by death” but later walked back the remarks, saying he was not threatening them with death but did believe that they are “in serious trouble.”

Other lawmakers who participated in the video include Reps. Chris Deluzio and Chrissy Houlahan of Pennsylvania, Maggie Goodlander of New Hampshire and Jason Crow of Colorado.

Responding to Trump’s comments at the time, Slotkin said that she received threats immediately and that Capitol Police told her she would be put under 24/7 security.

NBC News reported this week that Pirro, a Trump ally, opened a criminal investigation into Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, a frequent punching bag for Trump as he calls for lower interest rates. Powell said Sunday that the Justice Department was threatening the Fed with possible criminal indictment over his testimony before Congress last year about the renovation of the central bank’s offices.

Jupiter Links Golf Club took the TGL green for the first time this season, taking on New York Golf Club on Tuesday night at SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Jupiter Links got off to a hot start, taking a 2-0 lead on the first two holes, but New York overcame the deficit, storming back to win the match 8-3.

Max Homa, Kevin Kisner and Akshay Bhatia were active for Jupiter Links, while Tiger Woods and Tom Kim were inactive. For New York, Matt Fitzpatrick, Cameron Young and Rickie Fowler were in action with Xander Schauffele sitting out.

Will Ferrell introduces Jupiter Links and New York

Fans in attendance got some laughs ahead of Tuesday’s match. Actor Will Ferrell introduced the players for both teams, plus the player who would be coaching up Jupiter Links from the bench.

“Some guy named Tiger,” Ferrell said. “Who’s that? Does anyone know? Nevermind.”

Jupiter Links strikes first

Even from the bench, Tiger Woods found a way to get in a hammer throw.

Jupiter Links got an early advantage on Hole 1, after Fowler hit a drive into the bunker for New York. Meanwhile, Jupiter Links found themselves just under eight feet from the hole after two shots. So, Woods threw the hammer, which New York declined, giving Jupiter Links a 1-0 lead.

Jupiter Links earns first-ever multiple-point lead

After a forgettable season last year, Jupiter Links got off to a much better start this campaign. The team earned its first-ever multiple-point lead, with a quick 2-0 lead over New York on the first two holes of the match. Max Homa was caught taking in the moment on camera.

“This is easily the best I’ve ever felt,” Homa said to his teammates.

Young narrowly misses from 125 yards out

Young nearly put the team on his back on Hole 4. After New York hit the ball into the penalty area on its second shot, which lead to a 1-stroke penalty for the team, Young was just inches away from giving his team a chance to tie the hole from 125 yards away. His shot bounced off the flagpole, allowing Jupiter Links to win the hole and earn a point.

With one last chance to close the gap on New York’s 6-3 lead, Jupiter Links threw the hammer ahead of Hole 13 to make it worth two points. The pressure was no problem for Fowler, however, as he sank a 14-foot putt on his third shot to secure the win for NYGC.

Greenland’s prime minister says “we choose Denmark” over the U.S.


Greenland‘s prime minister said “we choose Denmark” over the U.S., on the eve of Wednesday’s meeting between the foreign ministers of Greenland and Denmark, Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other Trump administration officials.

“If we have to choose between the United States and Denmark here and now, we choose Denmark,” Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said at a news conference Tuesday in Copenhagen. “We choose NATO. We choose the Kingdom of Denmark. We choose the EU.”   

Nielsen appeared with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who said “there are many indications that the most challenging part is ahead of us,” according to AFP. 

Vance, who visited Greenland last year, will be hosting Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers — along with Rubio — at the White House, a source familiar with the planning confirmed to CBS News. 

President Trump has repeatedly said he wants to acquire Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, citing national security reasons.

“If we don’t take Greenland, Russia or China will take Greenland, and I am not going to let that happen,” Mr. Trump said Sunday.

“I’d love to make a deal with them. It’s easier,” he added. “But one way or the other, we’re going to have Greenland.” Rubio has downplayed the possibility of military force to acquire Greenland.

But leaders of both Denmark and Greenland have stated Greenland is “not for sale,” which has led Trump officials to say that the administration is considering all options, including military force. 

“One thing must be clear to everyone: Greenland does not want to be owned by the United States. Greenland does not want to be governed by the United States. Greenland does not want to be part of the United States,” Nielsen said Tuesday.

Denmark has been one of the U.S.’ staunchest NATO allies for more than 75 years. Frederiksen said of the U.S. there’s been “completely unacceptable pressure from our closest ally.”

Senate Democrats and a few Republicans have expressed opposition to military action against Greenland. Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia said Sunday on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan” that any military action in Greenland would be “disastrous.” He added that he believes “Congress will stop him, both Democrats and Republicans.” 

Republican Sen. Rand Paul told “CBS Mornings” last week that he would “do everything to stop any kind of military takeover of Greenland.” But Paul did not object to purchasing Greenland, noting that the U.S. has acquired territory in the past.

The Constitution says only Congress can declare war, and the Senate last week advanced a war powers resolution to limit the Trump administration’s ability to conduct further strikes Venezuela. Five Republicans joined all the Democrats in advancing the resolution, indicating a lack of support for any military action in Greenland. Democratic Sen. Reuben Gallego said last week that he expected to introduce a measure “to block Trump from invading Greenland.”

A bipartisan group of House members introduced legislation on Monday to prevent military action against NATO members, according to Politico. 

Rep. Don Bacon, one of the sponsors of the legislation, said last week that he thought any action in Greenland is wrong.

 “These are our allies,” he continued. “You don’t treat your allies this way. I mean it’s embarrassing. And by the way, most Greenlanders want to be Greenland. They don’t want to be American. They want to be our allies, though, and it’s creating a lot of anger and hurt with our friends in Europe.”
