Fantasy Baseball: Kyle Tucker with the Dodgers is a slam-dunk first-rounder again

0

We’re beyond parody now. It’s no longer hyperbole to say it. There’s no point in trying to justify the fit or rationalize the dollar amount. Quite simply, the Dodgers will get whomever they want.

The best player on the market? Just assume he’s theirs. Because if he’s really the best player, they’ll want him.

The market for Kyle Tucker had begun to percolate in recent days, with the decision seemingly coming down to whether he’d take a shorter deal with a higher average annual value from the Mets or a longer deal with a lower average annual value from the Blue Jays. But in swooped the Dodgers with a four-year, $240 million deal that was probably the best of both worlds.

Like it was ever going any other way.

If anyone is going to make $60 million a year (with large amounts deferred, most likely), it probably shouldn’t be Kyle Tucker, great as he is. But as Dodgers President Andrew Friedman once said and has now fully embodied, “If you’re always rational about every free agent, you’ll finish third on every free agent.” Tucker was the best hitter available this offseason, and they paid what it took to get him. Now, imagine the prospect package they could offer for Tarik Skubal.

If you’re sensing that I’m frustrated, good. It means I’m writing well. Conveying feelings through tone and style is what it’s all about. But what does it say that I have those feelings, as a (mostly) impartial observer who (mostly) observes baseball through a Fantasy Baseball lens? Shouldn’t I be thrilled? Hey everybody, a first-round pick for Tucker just got easier to justify! Lineup placement! Runs and RBI! Fat stacks of cash!

But no, I’m just deflated. It’s the kind of news that makes you no longer want to get out of bed in the morning, in a metaphorical baseball sense. Like, what’s even the point of playing out this season? Better for the other teams to play sarcastically so that they can deny Dodgers the satisfaction of winning this way.

I’m not normally like this, preemptively crowning a champion in a sport that revels in the randomness of small-sample outcomes. I’m the one annoyingly reminding all the knee-jerk doomsayers that the playoffs are a crapshoot and that no acquisition can protect a team from that reality. But the two-time defending World Series champions, who have already developed a reputation for cornering the market on every big-ticket talent, just signed the top free agent for a price no other team could even approach. There comes a point where anything else that happens in the world of baseball seems futile.

And with that, I’ve said my piece. Now, deep breath … analyst hat on … and … go …

You couldn’t ask for a better spot for Kyle Tucker’s Fantasy value. Gee golly, he’s likely to hit cleanup for the league’s most star-studded lineup, with three future hall of famers consistently on base ahead of him. Dodger Stadium has turned into a great hitter’s park, too, with its low fences in the corners and gradual curve to a shallow center field. It’s not the venue where Statcast says Tucker would have hit the most home runs last year, but he would have hit 29 there vs. the 23 he actually hit, if the math is to be believed. It’s certainly a better fit for his swing than Wrigley Field, where he hit just seven of his 22 home runs last year.

Why, he may even be worth drafting in the first round again, which some of us were saying from the beginning even if the consensus disputed it. He’ll need to avoid the fractured shin and fractured hand that have limited his availability and effectiveness over the past two years, but keeping one’s bones intact generally isn’t a big ask, regardless of his propensity for injury.

So yes, the outlook for Tucker in Fantasy is rosier today than it was yesterday, but rather than dreaming about what a career season might look like and whether you can justify taking him ahead of Corbin Carroll, even, ask yourself this …

What does it say about Alex Bregman that the Dodgers didn’t sign him?

Brad Paisley’s Son Asked Mick Jagger the Best Question

0

Brad Paisley sure has a lot of things to be proud of, but all pale in comparison to one moment he had with his own son and Rolling Stones legend, Mick Jagger.

The “Mud On The Tires” singer sat down with Hoda Kotb on the TODAY show where he tells the tale of legendary status.

“They had me open up a show or two for the stones and I said to Mick, ‘I got this bar/recording studio on my farm in Nashville, its real secluded, you ought to come to town and we’ll write, record and hang out.'”

Paisley said to his surprise, about a month later, Jagger reached back to him and said “When you wanna do that.”

What is Brad Paisley’s Proudest Moment?

Paisley says “One of my proudest moments, ever, is when Huck, my oldest, was probably 8 and we’re sitting at my bar and I made Huck a Shirley Temple.”

He continues, “I made Mick something harder, and myself something and we’re sitting around and Huck’s just sitting there nursing his drink like he’s Norm from Cheers, and here’s Mick having a beer next to my son.”

But wait, there’s a whole lot more.

Paisley continues with the epic story, saying, “This is my proudest moment, but he [Huck] turns to Mick and says, ‘Mick, was Muddy nice?’ Mick says ‘excuse me?’ Then he says ‘Muddy Waters, was he nice?'”

Paisley admits at that exact moment he was thinking “What in the hell is happening?” Then, Paisley says, in his best Jagger voice, ‘Yeah, yeah, he was great. He was so nice to us, he was a major influence on the Stones.”

The country legend then says his son says “‘That’s cool, I always wondered,’ and then gets up and walks away with his drink. That’s the best moment I ever had as a parent.”

17 Country Song Lyrics That Perfectly Describe Our Winter Blues

The country songs we find ourselves drawn to are typically the ones that feel like they were written on our hearts. These songs tell our stories, even when we can’t find the words.

The same rings true for the weather. We’ve plucked out several country song lyrics that perfectly describe our feelings about this cold time of year. We bet you’ve uttered a few of these phrases at least once during this frigid season.

Investigators say Samson Nacua took vehicle by mistake

0

LOS ANGELES — Samson Nacua, the brother of Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua, will not be charged after he was arrested last month for allegedly taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent, ABC7 in Los Angeles reported Thursday.

Samson Nacua and another man, Trey Rose, were arrested by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in December after allegedly stealing a car belonging to Lakers forward Adou Thiero.

But Thursday, the LASD’s West Hollywood Station told ABC7 that Samson Nacua believed it was Puka’s car; he has one similar in model and color to a vehicle owned by Thiero.

As a result, Thiero did not want to press charges, officials told ABC7.

Samson Nacua played college football at Utah and BYU. On Wednesday, he was drafted by the UFL’s Birmingham Stallions. In April, the UFL suspended Nacua, who was with the Michigan Panthers, for one game for slapping a fan.

New Czech government of populist leader Andrej Babiš wins a mandatory confidence vote

0

PRAGUE — The Czech Republic’s new government led by populist Prime Minister Andrej Babiš won a mandatory confidence vote in the lower house of Parliament on Thursday over its agenda aimed at steering the country away from supporting Ukraine and rejecting some key European Union policies.

Lawmakers voted 108-91 in favor of the coalition in the ballot that every new administration must win to govern.

Babiš, previously prime minister in two governments from 2017-2021, and his ANO, or YES, movement, won big in the country’s October election and formed a majority coalition with two small political groups, the Freedom and Direct Democracy anti-migrant party and the right-wing Motorists for Themselves.

The parties, which share admiration for U.S. President Donald Trump, created a 16-member Cabinet.

The political comeback by Babiš and his new alliance with two small government newcomers are expected to significantly redefine the nation’s foreign and domestic policies.

Unlike the previous pro-Western government, Babiš has rejected any financial aid for Ukraine and guarantees for EU loans to the country fighting the Russian invasion, joining the ranks of Viktor Orbán of Hungary and Robert Fico of Slovakia.

But his government would not abandon a Czech initiative that managed to acquire some 1.8 million much-needed artillery shells for Ukraine only last year on markets outside the EU on condition the Czechs would only administer it but would not contribute money.

The Freedom party sees no future for the Czechs in the EU and NATO, and wants to expel most of 380,000 Ukrainian refugees in the country.

The Motorists, who are in charge of the environment and foreign ministries, rejected the EU Green Deal and proposed the revival of the coal industry.

BOSSE-DE-NAGE Announce First Album In Eight Years, Streams “No Such Place”

0

San Francisco post-black metal lifers Bosse-de-Nage are back with their first new record in eight years and I personally could not be more stoked.

Bosse-De-Nage will release Hidden Fires Burn Hottest on March 6 via The Flenser, the label Bosse-de-Nage have called home for more than fifteen years. Bosse-de-Nage were among the first artists The Flenser ever partnered with, and today they hold the label’s longest active relationship.

Hidden Fires Burn Hottest was tracked by Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Oathbreaker) at Atomic Garden East and mixed and mastered by Richard Chowenhill of Agriculture. The album was years in the making, with some material dating back to 2018. That extended gestation period gave the band something rare: time. Time to live with ideas, to revise without pressure, and to let songs find their own internal logic rather than forcing them into shape.

For the first time, lyricist Bryan Manning wrote all of his lyrics in advance, creating a surplus rather than racing deadlines. The result is a record that feels considered at every level — nothing rushed, nothing overstated. Compared to 2016’s Further Still, which was defined by constraint and economy, this album embraces sprawl and strangeness.

That shift is especially clear on lead single “No Such Place.” One of the oldest songs in the cycle, it has come to represent the emotional core of the album. As the band explains, it’s “perhaps the closest realization of the original vision we had for this album,” marking the moment where the limitations of Further Still were fully shed.

Hidden Fires Burn Hottest are available here.
