JD Vance and Usha Vance are expecting their fourth child in late July

0

Second lady Usha Vance is pregnant with her fourth child, she announced Tuesday with Vice President JD Vance.

“We’re very excited to share the news that Usha is pregnant with our fourth child, a boy,” the couple said in a social media post.

The pair already share two sons and a daughter. Their joint statement said that Usha Vance and the baby are both doing well, adding that they look “forward to welcoming him in late July.”

It is extremely rare for a president or vice president to have a new child while in office.

The White House congratulated the second couple in a social media post.

“The most pro-family administration in history!” the official account said. “CONGRATULATIONS!”

Vance last January called for “more babies in the United States of America,” and President Donald Trump in March called himself “the fertilization president.” Their comments came ahead of figures showing the overall fertility rate in the U.S. declined for more than 15 years.

The vice president, 41, and his wife, 40, on Tuesday thanked the military physicians who care for their family.

“During this hectic time, we are particularly grateful for military doctors who take excellent care of our family and for the staff members who do so much to ensure that we can serve the country while enjoying a wonderful life with our children,” the statement said.

In an interview with NBC News last month, JD Vance said that his marriage with Usha Vance is “as strong as it’s ever been.” When discussing his family, the vice president talked about his three kids and how they’re handling being in the spotlight.

“I think that there’s always a limelight on the kids, and that’s both good and bad,” he said. “Our 8-year-old really doesn’t like it. He wants to have as private of a life as possible. When we come to an event in the White House and he sees the cameras, he doesn’t love it, and so we try to keep him out of that limelight as much as possible.”

“On the flip side, our 5-year-old, who’s a little bit more like me, he probably likes it too much,” JD Vance added. “He loves the fact that wherever he goes, people treat him very specially. They always give him candy or cookies.”

Season 2 Was Inconsistent But Brilliant

0

Over 70 percent of people who took a Landman Season 2 finale survey felt the same kind of way. A deeper exploration of the responses to Ep. 10 proves the streaming show’s audience is more than willing to forgive and forget.

My review of Landman Season 2 is included at the end of this article.

On Tuesday afternoon, my Dutton Rules co-host Adison Haager will join me to argue the finer points of the series during another live podcast episode.

We do this knowing a crucial Landman truth: critics who try to grade or evaluate Taylor Sheridan’s Texas oil business drama (or is it a comedy?) are missing the point.

Landman isn’t for the television or media professionals. It’s fan-first TV built for a multi-season run.

It’s also proof that Taylor Sheridan is getting very good at something he’d previously struggled with.

Landman, Season 2 Episode 10, Fan Review

The numbers speak for themselves. On YouTube, we asked fans to rate Landman‘s Season 2 finale. The platform limits the choices, but over 90 percent of voters had a positive opinion of the show.

YouTube/TasteofCountryMusic

YouTube/TasteofCountryMusic

Here are a few of the comments. This batch is representative; some people had a neutral or negative opinion of the series overall, but it was hard to find critics of this particular ep.

“The Landman finale was awesome.”

“Freaking EPIC! I almost cried because I thought the complete opposite was going to happen. Thank goodness it all turned out good.”

“I did like the ending and how it shapes the future for most of the cast.”

“Damn! What an awesome season, finale! This kept me on the edge of my seat until the end! Awesome.”

“My daughter and I just finished watching the two seasons of Landman and we are obsessed love this show!!!?”

I’m right there with the fans.

Episode 10 was not what I was expecting, but once I detached myself from expectations, I found myself really enjoying a final scene that was delightful, if just a little bit corny.

Landman Season 2 Review:

This year we figured out what Landman is. On the podcast, I asked this question a lot: are we watching a comedy or a drama?

The fact is, it’s both.

That usually doesn’t work well, and at times, it did not work well on Landman, but so much of my criticism this season was a product of my expectations having watched Yellowstone, 1883, 1923 etc …

Taylor Sheridan fundamentally changed what the show is for Season 2, and at times it was clumsy.

Certain episodes felt like a series of disconnected sketches, and others felt like an excuse to back-scratch his friends or to justify a character.

It all came together in the end for me, and there’s not a sequence of scenes that better represents this than Ainsley standing up for Paigyn.

That’s when we saw the growth we’d been missing through nine episodes. Paigyn could return for Season 3, and I’m good with that.

When I think back on this season I remember the highlights.

I remember TL’s emotional scenes, where he discloses the truth about Tommy Norris’ (Billy Bob Thornton) mother and childhood. Sam Elliott carried this show at times this season, but then he receded into the background in a truly remarkable, generous way.

I remember a pretty powerful love story between Cooper and Ariana. I remember Rebecca’s boardroom speeches, but also her being smitten with Charlie.

I gained a better understanding of Angela during the final few episodes of Season 2, and that will carry over to a third season that’s coming sooner than anyone thought.

The show isn’t perfect. For a long time, Taylor Sheridan’s comedy writing felt like what happens when Stephen King writes kids. You applaud the effort, but hope he gets back to what he does best.

With Landman, he didn’t retreat.

My guess is Sheridan used his experiences (and the very uneven response) from writing Seasons 2 and 3 of Tulsa King and fine-tuned it for this show, which has a very similar tone.

Was it great? It was not consistently great, but the highs outweigh the lows in my memory, so I’m giving Season 2 of Landman a solid B.

11 ‘Landman’ Facts You Definitely Didn’t Know

This list of Landman facts goes much deeper than what inspired the show, who stars in it and how big the audience is. Here you’ll learn the truth about the most memorable scenes and lines of dialogue, including that line from Ainsley Norris. You know which one we mean.
Season 2 of Landman begins Nov. 16 on Paramount+. Here’s the best Landman trivia we could find as the Dutton Rules podcast team prepares for another great year.

No. 11 Illinois star guard Kylan Boswell suffers hand injury, will miss at least a month

0

Illinois senior guard Kylan Boswell will miss at least a month with a right-hand injury, Illini coach Brad Underwood announced Tuesday. Boswell is Illinois’ second-leading scorer and has transformed into one of the elite point-of-attack defenders in all of college basketball, who is capable of guarding Cooper Flagg, Purdue’s Trey Kaufman-Renn, Northwestern’s Nick Martinelli, Iowa’s Bennett Stirtz and everyone in between. Boswell suffered the injury in Monday’s practice.

The timing is less than ideal for No. 11 Illinois, especially ahead with Saturday’s highly-anticipated road tilt against No. 4 Purdue looming. Through two-plus months, Boswell was averaging 14.3 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.8 assists while shooting 82% at the charity stripe.

“Expecting a mid-February return to action for him,” Underwood told reporters, via Illini Inquirer. “Unfortunate. Feel terrible for Kylan as he’s obviously a senior and he’s having such a phenomenal year. It’s the ‘next man up’ mentality with our team. It’s exciting that we’ve been able to develop the depth. We’ll see what that looks like as we move forward.”

It’s a significant blow for Illinois’ Big Ten Championship hopes. Illinois is part of a Big Five that has emerged in the Big Ten pecking order. Purdue and Nebraska are a perfect 7-0 with Michigan, Illinois and Michigan State nipping on their heels at 6-1. All five look like second-weekend contenders and worthy Big Ten winners. The calculus changes for the Illini without Boswell, who has been the leader of this club from the jump.

Illinois has winnable home bouts looming like Maryland, Washington, Northwestern and Indiana, but life on the road in the Big Ten is especially brutal, especially without one of the premier defenders in the league. Can it stay in the race?

Where does Illinois turn?

Illinois’ offense has been exceptional this year, rating No. 3 nationally in efficiency with a slick mix of size, shooting and offensive rebounding. Boswell is the glue of that unit. The 6-2 senior can get a bucket at all three levels, draw a ton of fouls and operate as a secondary playmaker.

When Boswell has been on the floor, Illinois has a minuscule 13% turnover rate. When he sits, Illinois’ turnover rate spikes to over 20%. Playing mistake-free basketball will be essential for Boswell’s replacement to keep this train on the tracks.

Underwood doesn’t have an easy plug-and-play replacement, but there are options aplenty. Junior sharpshooter Jake Davis will get some burn. Davis has just two turnovers this season, and he’s shooting over 40% from downtown. Underwood could also trot out some more double-big lineups featuring Tomislav and Zvonimir Ivisic to counteract some of the double-big lineups that Purdue and Washington will present in the next nine days.

Of course, Keaton Wagler and Andrej Stojakovic become even more essential. Wagler has been a revelation. The 6-6 point guard has emerged as the engine of the Illini. The Big Ten Freshman of the Year frontrunner will have even more on his plate as he navigates the vicious Big Ten. Stojakovic also has to return to early-season form offensively. Illinois had the depth to afford quiet offensive games from Stojakovic in wins over Northwestern and Minnesota last week. Those days are over. Without Boswell, Stojakovic will shoulder more defensive responsibilities. Underwood needs more from his star transfer on both ends immediately.

Illinois could also tap the Mihailo Petrovic button. The Serbian point guard has not been a huge part of this rotation, mostly due to Wagler’s emergence into a potential first-round pick and a flat-out star. Can Petrovic defend and play clean basketball? Is playing Petrovic and shifting Wagler to more of an off-ball role good for this club?

Let the tinkering for the 15-3 Illini begin.

China “super embassy” greenlit in London despite national security, dissident group concerns

0

London – Despite fears of Chinese spying and hacking, the British government gave the go-ahead Tuesday for China to build a massive new embassy in the heart of London. The mega-embassy’s designs will see it occupy an entire city block with a view of The Shard, Britain’s tallest building on the banks of the Thames.

It will be China’s biggest embassy in Europe.

The U.K. government’s decision ended a saga that began in 2018 with Beijing’s purchase for nearly $350 million of the former Royal Mint building, which used to produce Britain’s money and long served as a symbol of the U.K.’s economic might. After the COVID pandemic, the U.K. government — amid multiple changes in leadership — delayed final approval for the project as intelligence experts, members of the Chinese diaspora, and would-be future neighbors of the new embassy raised concerns and protested

Sir Richard Dearlove, the former head of the British foreign intelligence service MI6, previously called on the government to reject China’s plans to build on the site, which sits on top of buried cables that transmit sensitive financial and commercial data across the U.K. capital.

“Having a Chinese embassy sitting on top of those cables, which could in extremis be attacked, is a significant problem,” he told CBS News in early December, when a previous deadline for the government’s decision was pushed to this month.

With a larger physical presence, Beijing could also employ more Chinese diplomatic staff, who would have freedom of movement in Britain thanks to diplomatic visas.

“If it’s got a very large embassy, there could be a very large number, and then going off to third countries, ostensibly on holiday or whatever, or to travel, and doing stuff outside the country to which they’re accredited,” said Dearlove.

“They’re purporting to be ordinary diplomats, ordinary attaches, who are actually highly trained intelligence personnel,” he said.

U.K. officials respond to concerns about Chinese Embassy

In response to intelligence concerns, the heads of the domestic intelligence agency MI5 and GCHQ, the intelligence, cyber and security agency, on Tuesday admitted that British national security risks tied to China’s new embassy could not be totally eliminated and implied attempting to do so would be impossible.

“It would be irrational to drive ’embassy generated risk’ down to zero when numerous other threat vectors are so central to the national security risks we face in the present era,” GCHQ Director Anne Keast-Butler and MI5 Director-General Sir Ken McCallum said in a joint letter to government ministers. They also said that the work to mitigate risks had been “expert, professional and proportionate.”

Separately, on political grounds, the 240-page report by the U.K. Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government said decisions about embassy approval should not be decided based on a country’s style of governance.

“Planning law and national and development plan policies, and for its signatories, the Vienna Convention which is founded on reciprocity, are nation-neutral,” the report says. “It is not possible to discriminate against a use on the basis of the anticipated user. Otherwise that could give rise to an untenable situation of the embassy of one nation being permitted but another nations embassy being refused.”

“In this regard, any ethical or similar objection to the provision of an embassy for a specific country cannot be a material planning consideration,” the report says. “It would not be lawful to refuse permission simply because it would be for a Chinese Embassy … The same would hold for any other specific country seeking an embassy use through the planning system.”

Chinese Embassy’s approval sparks criticism

Despite the ministry’s report, British opposition parties criticized approval of the embassy as an “act of cowardice” and Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s “biggest mistake yet.”

Anti-Beijing activist and dissident groups reacted with disappointment and anger. As China’s government has cracked down on freedoms in Hong Kong, Tibet and China’s Muslim-majority region of Xinjiang in its northwest, many sought refuge in the U.K.

“It is definitely deeply disappointing but not surprising,” said Carmen Lau, a former Hong Kong politician living in self-exile in London.

She said she believed the U.K. approved the embassy so that Starmer could keep his planned trip to Beijing later this month. The U.K. has also been trying to get approval for a new embassy in Beijing.

“But to me it is a disproportionate deal,” said Lau. “China’s economic favour / return to the UK isn’t worth giving up on a huge chunk of national security concern.”

The U.K. has also become home to the world’s largest Hong Kong diaspora community with an estimated nearly 200,000 having fled in the past five years after the failed mass democracy protests in 2019.

“(The) Hong Kong diaspora would definitely be affected,” said Lau. “I’ve heard people planning to relocate (into) secondary exile. The reason is that we have been seeing Chinese agents and the PRC (People’s Republic of China) itself becoming bolder in reaching us in the UK.”

“This embassy will be a daily reminder of China’s increased presence, increased influence, over the UK government,” said Tenzin Rabga Tashi of Tibetan advocacy group Free Tibet.

“It will be a reminder for my community members to watch how they behave, to not be as active in advocacy,” Tashi said. “You know, many of them have family inside Tibet so they won’t be able to as freely be comfortable living in the UK knowing that China has more eyes on them, not just them but their friends, their families. This system of fear, this system of repression has increased in the UK and it will continue to expand as long as China’s mega embassy is here.”

“I am dismayed … absolutely furious,” said Rahima Mahmut, executive director of human rights charity Stop Uyghur Genocide.

Human rights groups say that, starting in 2014, up to a million Muslim Uyghur people were rounded up in Xinjiang and imprisoned. Those who could escaped, and thousands settled in the United States.

“The approval of the mega embassy is deeply dismaying and feels like a profound betrayal,” Mahmut said.

After the British government gave its approval, the Chinese Embassy in London said in a statement that it had noted that its application had been approved.

Ex-NBA star Lamar Odom arrested on suspicion of DUI in Nevada

0

LAS VEGAS — Former NBA star Lamar Odom was arrested on suspicion of DUI in Las Vegas over the weekend, authorities said Tuesday.

Odom, 46, was pulled over Saturday on Interstate 15 near Harry Reid International Airport, according to Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Shawn Haggstrom.

He could face charges including DUI, excessive speed and failure to properly maintain a travel lane, Haggstrom said.

Haggstrom didn’t have attorney information for Odom. An email seeking comment from a sports agent for Odom wasn’t immediately returned.

Clark County jail records showed that Odom was no longer in custody as of Tuesday.

Odom won championships in 2009 and 2010 with the Los Angeles Lakers. He also played for the LA Clippers, Miami Heat and Dallas Mavericks during a 14-year NBA career.

His 2013 marriage to Khloe Kardashian was tabloid fodder and the couple appeared together on a reality TV show before divorcing months later. That same year, Odom was arrested for DUI in Los Angeles.

In 2015, Odom made headlines after suffering a medical episode during a stay at a legal brothel in Nevada called Love Ranch.
