DOJ serves subpoenas to Walz, Frey and other Minnesota officials amid immigration crackdown
The Justice Department has sent subpoenas to Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and other state leaders, escalating its investigation into whether state officials conspired to impede law enforcement during the Trump administration’s immigration operations, according to a document reviewed by NBC News and a person familiar with the investigation.
The subpoenas were also sent to Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, the office of St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her and two counties, according to the document and the person familiar with the probe.
NBC News has reached out to their offices for comment.
In a statement to NBC News, Frey sharply criticized the Trump administration and accused the Justice Department of misusing its power.
“When the federal government weaponizes its power to try to intimidate local leaders for doing their jobs, every American should be concerned. We shouldn’t have to live in a country where people fear that federal law enforcement will be used to play politics or crack down on local voices they disagree with,” Frey added.
“In Minneapolis, we won’t be afraid. We know the difference between right and wrong and, as Mayor, I’ll continue doing the job I was elected to do: keeping our community safe and standing up for our values,” the Democratic mayor added.
In a statement, Ellison said the subpoena was “for records and documents, not for me personally.”
“Everything about this is highly irregular, especially the fact that this comes shortly after my office sued the Trump Administration to challenge their illegal actions within Minnesota,” the state attorney general said.
“Let’s be clear about why this is happening: Donald Trump is coming after the people of Minnesota and I’m standing in his way,” Ellison added. “I will not be intimidated, and I will not stop working to protect Minnesotans from Trump’s campaign of retaliation and revenge.”
The investigation comes after an ICE officer shot and killed Renee Nicole Good, a U.S. citizen and mother of three, during an immigration enforcement operation. The killing sparked protests and led to clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement in scenes that have drawn national attention.
The federal statute invoked in the investigation into Minnesota officials has been rarely used and has roots in the Civil War era. But it was on a list of statutes in a memo from Attorney General Pam Bondi last month, obtained by NBC News, that offered a road map for federal prosecutors on how to charge political agitators with crimes.
Federal officials are also investigating Good’s partner to determine whether she may have impeded a federal officer moments before Good was shot and killed, two people familiar with the investigation said.
Walz has said previously: “The only person not being investigated for the shooting of Renee Good is the federal agent who shot her.” He was referring to ICE officer Jonathan Ross, a war veteran who spent over a decade working for the Department of Homeland Security.

Duke sues star QB Darian Mensah in wake of last-minute transfer portal entry request
Duke has filed a lawsuit against Blue Devils quarterback Darian Mensah, arguing Mensah broke his contract by trying to enter the transfer portal and that he must stay with the Blue Devils to finish the arbitration process.
The suit, filed in Durham Superior Court, comes a few days after Mensah announced his intention to enter the transfer portal hours ahead of the NCAA’s Jan. 16 transfer portal entry deadline.
In a 44-page document filed Tuesday morning, Duke argues that Mensah should not be allowed to enter the portal so the two sides can enter and engage in arbitration the two sides agreed within the terms of the deal to settle disputes.
The Blue Devils as part of the lawsuit requested a temporary restraining order that would prevent Mensah from entering the portal, enrolling in another school, playing football for another school and licensing his name, image and likeness to another school prior to a decision from an arbitrator.
Said Duke in its filing:
“Contracts mean something. Mensah’s actions violate numerous provisions of his contract with Duke University and disregard his promises and obligations to the University. And, as Mensah agreed when he signed his contract, such breaches cause Duke irreparable harm for which there is no adequate remedy at law and, in the event of any such breach, Duke is entitled to injunctive or other equitable relief.”
Mensah’s agency, Young Money, is working with sports attorney Darren Heitner to navigate the suit.
Heitner told CBS Sports the “lawsuit shouldn’t have been filed in the first place for a variety of reasons.
“You can’t restrain the movement of athletes from one school to another,” Heitner said. “There’s no provision in the agreement that removes a requirement that Duke put the player in the portal within 48 (business) hours of a request. There’s no irreparable harm and there’s a mechanism in the contract that shows how they’d be compensated for any harm, thus there cannot be irreparable harm.”
Heitner said that on Monday, a judge denied Duke’s request that would have kept Mensah’s name out the portal. He added that Duke’s other requests would be addressed at a later date.
“Our understanding based on that is they’re going to comply with NCAA rules,” Heitner said. “And that they’ll do so tomorrow.”
The judge who made the initial ruling that Duke had to submit Mensah’s name in the portal was a Duke fan and season ticket holder, said Heitner, and he’s expected to recuse himself from future proceedings of the case.
Mensah’s attempt to enter the portal and Duke’s suit attempting to prevent him from playing for another program is the latest example of player and school clashing over the terms of a player’s contract.
In recent weeks Washington held firm and prevented quarterback Demond Williams from entering the portal due to the terms of his contract. Former Georgia edge Damon Wilson is currently suing the Bulldogs over the terms of his deal. Meanwhile, Ole Miss and standout edge Princewell Umanmielen are at a standstill over Umanmielen’s request to enter the portal despite him signing a new contract in the days prior to his request.
Duke gave Mensah one of the biggest contracts in the sport last offseason to lure him from Tulane, striking a deal that paid Mensah up to $8 million over two seasons. The partnership went well in Year 1 as Mensah finished second nationally in passing yard and Duke won the ACC championship.
But a few hours ahead of the portal deadline last Friday, Mensah informed the Duke staff he wished to enter the portal.
Industry sources consider Miami to be the favorite to land Mensah whenever he is officially listed in the portal database.

Mexico sends 37 cartel members to U.S. amid pressure from Trump administration
Mexico’s security minister said Tuesday that it had sent another 37 members of Mexican drug cartels to the United States, as the Trump administration ratchets up pressure on governments to crack down on criminal networks it says are smuggling drugs across the border.
Mexican Security Minister Omar García Harfuch wrote in a social media post on X that the people transferred were “high impact criminals” that “represented a real threat to the country’s security.”
Garia said under an agreement with the U.S. Justice Department, prosecutors would not seek the death penalty. He said the 37 individuals were taken to multiple cities, including Washington, Houston, New York,, San Antonio and San Diego, aboard 7 aircraft.

It is the third time in the past year that Mexico has sent detained cartel members to the U.S.
Harfuch said that the government has sent 92 people in total.
Last August, Mexico sent 26 high-ranking cartel figures to the U.S., including Abigael González Valencia, a leader of “Los Cuinis,” a group closely aligned with notorious cartel Jalisco New Generation, or CJNG. Another defendant, Roberto Salazar, was wanted in connection to the 2008 killing of a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy.

Could Chris Stapleton Be Contemplating Retirement?
Bad news for fans waiting for a new album from Chris Stapleton: The singer says he’s not sure when he’ll release music again, but it likely won’t be anytime soon.
In fact, it seems like the idea of retiring altogether has crossed his mind lately.
During a new conversation on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, Stapleton said he hasn’t been feeling that creative fire lately, and he wants to make a “thoughtful decision” about where his career goes from here.
When Will Chris Stapleton Release a New Album?
Short answer? Nobody knows, not even the singer himself.
“I’m probably at a bit of a crossroads and I don’t know when I’m gonna make another record or write another song,” Stapleton admitted.
“I’m probably not really in the mood,” he continues. “And that’s okay with me. Probably not okay with managers and record labels and people like that, but that’s okay with me.”

- That album was his fifth to date.
- He’s normally released studio projects every 2-3 years, except for his two From A Room albums, which both came out in 2017.
- Stapleton’s most recent single is “A Song to Sing,” a duet with Miranda Lambert that came out last summer.
Is Chris Stapleton Retiring?
On Shepard’s podcast, Stapleton said 10 little words that no fan wants to hear.
Those were, “I don’t know how much longer I’ll even go play.”
That statement probably comes as a shock to most country listeners. Even though Stapleton’s not exactly a fresh-faced 20-something, he’s still in his prime hit-making era at 47 years old.

On top of that, Stapleton rose to fame just 11 years ago with the release of his Traveller album and his crowd-stunning, career-making performance with Justin Timberlake at the 2015 CMA Awards.
Retirement, already?! Surely not yet.
Fortunately, it seems like it’ll probably be a little while before Stapleton quits his career for good.
“I’m not saying I’m hanging up my spurs,” he assured Shepard, before explaining the thought process behind what he wants to do in his career next.
Why Is Chris Stapleton Considering Retirement?
The singer is a dad to five kids, and he says it’s important to him that he gives them lots of quality time, especially after more than decade of sacrificing family time for a country career.
“I got babies, I got some that are almost out of the house, you know,” Stapleton explains. “And they gave up a lot for me to be sitting here with you and doing things. So I owe them some things. Some time, in particular.”

He also says that, frankly, his career has exceeded his wildest dreams. As he moves forward, he needs something new to strive for.
“My dream used to be to play the Ryman Auditorium and sell it out,” the singer reflects. “And then very early after the Timberlake moment, we played it three nights in a row and sold it out. And I used to say, ‘Well, now I have to get a new dream.’
“So what’s the new dream? I do think it’s important to find that,” he continues. “For me, fuel is the search. So I’m gonna have to search for something and I’m gonna have to hunt. I don’t know what that is or where it’s gonna come from.”
What’s Next For Chris Stapleton?
The best news for Stapleton fans that came out of this portion of his interview with Shepard is that he’s not giving up on that hunt.
But it will take some time, and he’s not going to rush to make music simply for the sake of having new music.

“I wanna make a thoughtful decision about what I do with the rest of the time that I have on the Earth,” the singer explains.
“I’m not saying I’m hanging up my spurs, I’m just saying that I’m looking for the fire,” Stapleton goes on to say. “I need the fire, and I want the fire to lead. And sometimes that’s more elusive now than it used to be.”

In the meantime, the singer’s headed out on a new iteration of his All-American Road Show, which kicked off earlier in January with two Florida dates.
