Broncos vs. Patriots: These X factors in AFC Championship could determine who advances to Super Bowl

0

The AFC Championship is on the line, as is a trip to Super Bowl LX, when the New England Patriots and Denver Broncos go toe-to-toe at Mile High. These were the top two seeds in the conference at the end of the regular season, so it’s fitting to see them as the last clubs standing.

However, the Broncos will look remarkably different in this matchup than they have throughout the year, particularly in the aftermath of Bo Nix suffering a season-ending ankle injury in the final moments of Denver’s overtime win against the Bills last weekend. That now thrusts backup Jarrett Stidham into the starting spot as the Broncos hope he’ll help propel them to their first trip to the Super Bowl since reaching Super Bowl 50.

As for the Patriots, they come into the conference title game thanks in large part to some dominant play defensively this postseason, most notably forcing five turnovers (four interceptions coming from C.J. Stroud) against the Texans last weekend. They are in the midst of a historic turnaround following a 4-13 campaign a season ago. Under first-year head coach Mike Vrabel, New England is now 16-3 (including playoffs), which is tied for the 1998-99 Rams (+12) for the largest year-over-year win total increase (including playoffs) in NFL history. On top of Vrabel’s arrival, that ascent has been spearheaded by Drake Maye, catapulting him into an MVP candidate in his second season. Maye is now looking to become the second-youngest QB to start in a Super Bowl, only looking up to Dan Marino.

These franchises are no strangers to seeing one another in the playoffs. This will be the sixth time they’ve squared off in the postseason, with Denver holding a 4-1 edge in those prior matchups. New England is also 0-4 on the road in Denver in the playoffs, so they’ll need to achieve what no other Patriots team has achieved before to inch one step closer to a championship.

As we gear up for this AFC Championship, let’s highlight a key X factor for each team that could prove to be the difference in them advancing or going home.

Where to watch Broncos vs. Patriots live

  • Date: Sunday, Jan. 25 | Time: 3 p.m. ET
  • Location: Empower Field at Mile High (Denver)
  • TV: CBS | StreamParamount+
  • Odds: Patriots -5.5, O/U 42.5 (odds via DraftKings Sportsbook)

Patriots’ X factor: Drake Maye needs to protect the football

What’s gone under the radar over New England’s playoff run has been Drake Maye being a little too loose with the football. During the Patriots’ first two postseason matchups, Maye has six fumbles (three lost) and two interceptions. One of those interceptions was a heave to the end zone in the final seconds of the first half against Houston, so we can cast that one off to the side. That said, that’s still far too many turnovers if you’re trying to win a championship.

To this point, the Patriots haven’t really been burned by Maye giving the ball to the opposition, thanks to their dominant play defensively. Of those four true turnovers, New England opponents have scored just seven points. While they have held up until this point, Maye can’t bank on the defense to bail him out. Turning the ball over and giving his defense short fields to work with is a recipe for a team like the Broncos — who are starting a backup quarterback in this game — to smell blood in the water and eye an upset.

Now this isn’t all on Maye. The second-year quarterback has held onto the ball a bit too long at times, but he’s also been under siege due to some poor play, particularly on the left side of the offensive line. This postseason, Maye has been sacked 10 times, which is the most among all quarterbacks. Rookie left tackle Will Campbell has accounted for three of those sacks, which is a departure from his strong play during the regular season.

Campbell struggled against Chargers pass rusher Odafe Oweh over Wild Card Weekend, along with Will Anderson Jr. in the divisional round, and it won’t get any easier in the AFC Championship. Now, Campbell and the rest of the Patriots offensive line will have to square up against a Broncos pass rush that just set a franchise record 71 sacks (and counting) on the season. Most notably, Campbell will have to deal with Denver pass rusher Nik Bonitto, who had the third-highest pressure rate (19.1%) in the league this season (min. 400 rushes).

If New England can hold up in protection and Maye plays a clean game, there is a clear avenue to victory. If those turnovers and leakiness on the left side persist, it’s anyone’s ballgame, no matter who is under center for Denver.

Broncos’ X factor: Don’t ask Jarrett Stidham to do too much

Let’s just be blunt. The Broncos are in a difficult position. No team wants to have to turn to a backup quarterback for a game with stakes as big as the AFC Championship, but here they are. With Nix sidelined, Jarrett Stidham will start for Denver. When he does, it’ll mark the first time he’s started a meaningful game since Week 18 of the 2023 season, which is also the last time he attempted a pass in the NFL.  Moreover, it’ll be just his fifth-ever start in the NFL and the first taste of playoff action in his career.

Stidham will be the seventh quarterback to make his first start of the season in the playoffs. Only one of the previous six was able to win a game (Frank Reich in 1992). That’s not to say that Stidham simply can’t lead the Broncos to an AFC title and a trip to the Super Bowl, but it’ll have to be under specific circumstances.

CBS Sports HQ

Sean Payton is now tasked with managing Stidham and not letting the game get too out of hand so that the backup turned starter will need to throw his team back into it, which would likely turn into a disaster.

First off, Denver will need to get some semblance of a running game going to take pressure off Stidham. The Broncos could potentially get a boost in that regard with a return of J.K. Dobbins, who has been sidelined since Week 10 due to a foot injury. Denver did open up his practice window this week and reportedly has a chance to play in the AFC Championship. If he does, that could greatly help a Denver running game that is bottom 10 in rushing yards per game and yards per rush since he went down. Before the injury, Dobbins was averaging a career-high 77.2 rushing yards per game.

On top of a possible Dobbins return to improve the ground attack, Denver’s offensive line will need to continue holding up in pass protection. The unit is coming off a regular season where they allowed just 23 sacks (tied for the fewest in the NFL). A clean pocket will do wonders for Stidham, particularly early as he gets into a rhythm.

To further help in pass protection, Payton would be wise to call plays that see Stidham make quick, single-read throws, whether it be screens, slants, or hitches. That’ll help with tempo and not have him deal with New England’s emerging pass rush.

On the defensive side of things, they’ll need to keep Drake Maye and the Patriots offense in check by pressuring him as we highlighted above. Essentially, Payton and the Broncos should look to bring this game to a screeching halt and turn it into a rock fight. If they can, Stidham won’t be asked to throw them to the Super Bowl.

Trump and “Board of Peace” partners sign founding charter in Davos, as he pledges group will work with U.N.

0

Mr. Trump could offer more details Thursday on his proposed international “Board of Peace” as questions linger over its composition and scope.

The president floated the concept of a Board of Peace last year, as part of a plan brokered by his administration to end the Israel-Hamas war. The board was conceived of as an “international transitional body” that could help oversee a new, technocratic post-Hamas government in the Gaza Strip and fund the Palestinian territory’s redevelopment.

“This body will call on best international standards to create modern and efficient governance that serves the people of Gaza and is conducive to attracting investment,” the peace plan said.

Last week, the White House said the board would play a role in implementing the Gaza peace deal and “providing strategic oversight, mobilizing international resources, and ensuring accountability as Gaza transitions from conflict to peace and development.”

The board is set to be led by an executive committee that includes Secretary of State Marco Rubio, U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, Mr. Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, former U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair and World Bank Group President Ajay Banga, among others.

The organization is set to be chaired by Mr. Trump. In a press conference last year, the president said he’s slated to lead the board “not at my request, believe me. I’m very busy. But we have to make sure this works.”

Countries can contribute $1 billion to the Board of Peace to become permanent members instead of having a three-year membership, a U.S. official told CBS News, confirming a Bloomberg report. The official said it isn’t a requirement to contribute to become a member.

The official also told CBS News that any contributions will be used to rebuild Gaza and said “virtually every dollar” raised will be spent on the Board’s mandate. There will be no “exorbitant salaries” or “administrative bloat,” the official said.

Why Did OZZY OSBOURNE Bite The Head Off A Bat In 1981?

0

Rock history doesn’t usually come with teeth marks. But on the night of January 20th, 1982, in Des Moines, IA, Ozzy Osbourne leaned into immortality and came away with a mouthful of bat.

The Night Of The Bat

It happened midway through a show at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium, during the Diary of a Madman tour, when something dark and winged landed at Osbourne‘s feet. In the middle of the chaos, Ozzy did what Ozzy had trained the world to expect: he picked it up and bit its head clean off. By accident. Sorta.

“I thought it was rubber,” Osbourne would say later, repeating the line for decades like a cursed chorus. Then came the realization. “My mouth was instantly full of this warm, gloopy liquid,” he wrote in his autobiography I Am Ozzy. “Then the head in my mouth twitched.”

Whether the bat was alive or already dead remains one of the great theological disputes of metal lore. A 2004 Rolling Stone article said it was alive. Mark Neal, the 17-year-old who threw it onstage, insisted it was long dead — sealed in a baggie, weeks removed from any semblance of flight. Osbourne himself has told versions of the story that include being bitten back. What everyone agrees on is the aftermath: the show ended, Ozzy went to the hospital, and the rabies shots began.

A Career Made On Spectacle

By 1982, Osbourne was already a walking headline. As the original frontman of Black Sabbath, he’d helped invent heavy metal, wrapping blues riffs in dread and giving Satan a soundcheck. Fired from the band in 1979 for excess even by Sabbath standards, Ozzy rebounded with Blizzard of Ozz, a solo career powered by the virtuosic guitar work of Randy Rhoads and a stage show that leaned hard into horror-movie spectacle.

On the Diary of a Madman tour, Osbourne had taken things further. Raw meat featuring pig intestines and calves’ livers was catapulted into the crowd nightly. Fans returned the favor. Sheep testicles. Live frogs. The bat didn’t seem out of place. Until it was.

The Aftermath Of The Bat-Biting Incident

Osbourne was rushed to Broadlawns Medical Center after the show, where staff quickly realized they were treating more than a patient. “For a week, that was probably 50 percent of my job,” recalled nurse supervisor Pam Culver. Calls poured in from around the world. Did it hurt? How many shots? Where did they inject him?

Even Des Moines felt the aftershocks. By October, the auditorium banned performers from using live animals onstage without management approval — a sentence that exists in history solely because Ozzy Osbourne once mistook a bat for a prop.

Ozzy Osbourne & The Bat: Forever Intertwined

If the bat incident was accidental, its afterlife was anything but. Osbourne leaned into it, monetized it, and eventually embalmed it in pop culture. Plush bats with detachable heads sold out on his website. In 2022, he launched Cryptobatz, turning the moment into NFTs for a generation raised on digital mythmaking.

Still, the bat became an albatross. It followed him through millions of album sales, through the rise of Ozzfest, through reality-TV superstardom on The Osbournes, through two Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductions — first with Black Sabbath in 2006, then as a solo artist in 2024. No matter how much ground Ozzy covered, Des Moines stayed embossed in his skull.

“I’ve had some mileage from Des Moines,” he told The Des Moines Register in 2001, before returning to the same auditorium for the first time since the incident.

Rolling Stone would later rank the bat-biting No. 2 on its list of “Rock’s Wildest Myths,” which feels about right. Who the hell can forget such an incident? Ozzy himself never did. He complained about the questions, but he also understood the deal.

TRENDING RUMORS

Manchester United and Chelsea are interested in Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha, according to Sky Germany. The 25-year-old has impressed with a regular slot in Dortmund’s midfield this season and the club are hoping to renegotiate his contract, which runs out in 2028. However, Nmecha — who came through Manchester City‘s youth team and whose older brother, Lukas, plays for Leeds United — has previously intimated that he would like to play in the Premier League.

Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski won’t leave the club in January, but he will move to MLS in the summer, Sky Germany reports. The 37-year-old is also wanted by Saudi Pro League clubs but favours a move to the U.S., and he’s prepared to wait until the end of the season to ensure the right switch. The Poland international has been on the Barça bench in five consecutive matches and his time in La Liga is coming to an end. His contract expires in June.

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with West Ham United winger Crysencio Summerville and Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones, according to the Daily Mail. Under-pressure Spurs boss Thomas Frank is still looking for someone to occupy the left-wing position vacated by Son Heung-min, with Summerville touted as a potential target. Meanwhile, Jones is another target for Frank, though his move could be trickier to achieve given his desire to stay at his boyhood club, Liverpool, for his entire career. Jones remains a key player for Arne Slot, though he has been in and out of the Liverpool side this season.

Aston Villa had been chasing striker Tammy Abraham, but they have turned their attention to wantaway Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and AC Milan‘s Ruben Loftus-Cheek. The Telegraph reports that Loftus-Cheek, 29, is seen as an ideal short-term replacement for Boubacar Kamara, who Villa fear could miss the rest of the season with a knee injury. Meanwhile, The Athletic reports that Mateta has told Palace officials that he wants to leave the South London club, and Villa see the 28-year-old Frenchman as an easier deal to negotiate than Abraham. Palace, in turn, are evaluating a move for Villa forward Evann Guessand.

Chelsea are closing in on their first signing under new manager Liam Rosenior, according to The Athletic. Teenage Sheffield Wednesday defender Yisa Alao could move to Stamford Bridge in a £500,000 deal which would rise to £1 million with add-ons. Manchester United have already had a £450,000 bid rejected for the 17-year-old.

Philippine court convicts journalist of terror financing charge in ruling condemned by media groups

0

MANILA, Philippines — A Philippine court Thursday found a Filipina journalist guilty of financing terrorism in a verdict that was condemned by press freedom watchdogs but welcomed by anti-communist insurgency officials.

Presiding Judge Georgina Perez of the Regional Trial Court in central Tacloban city convicted Frenchie Mae Cumpio and human rights missionary Marielle Domequil — who have been jailed for nearly six years — of financing terrorism charges. They were acquitted on separate charges of illegally possessing firearms and explosives, court officials said.

Prison terms of 12 years to 18 years were imposed on Cumpio and Domequil, who could appeal the verdicts, Ailene Balatay, the lawyer for the clerk of court, said.

The charges stemmed from accusations that Cumpio and Domequil provided financial and other support to New People’s Army communist insurgents in 2019 in the eastern province of Samar. They were arrested in February 2020 on charges of illegally possessing a gun and a grenade.

Both vehemently denied the allegations. The charges against the 26-year-old Cumpio have been depicted by activists as the latest sign of the risks faced by reporters in the Philippines, which is regarded as one of the most dangerous places for journalists in the world.

Reporters Without Borders and allied organizations condemned the convictions as a “clear miscarriage of justice” and said an investigation by the media advocacy group found the charges against the two were fabricated.

Cumpio’s “conviction represents a devastating failure on the part of the Philippine justice system and the authorities’ blatant disregard for press freedom,” Aleksandra Bielakowska, advocacy manager at Reporters Without Borders, said in a statement.

“The Philippines should serve as an international example of protecting media freedom — not a perpetrator that red-tags, prosecutes and imprisons journalists simply for doing their work,” said the group, also known by its French acronym RSF.

At the time of her 2020 arrest, Cumpio was the executive director of a provincial news website and a radio news anchor who reported on alleged police and military abuses along with community welfare issues in the east-central Philippines, RSF said.

Cristina Palabay, secretary-general of the left-wing human rights coalition Karapatan, said the court’s dismissal of the illegal possession of firearms and explosives charges “confirms that the accusations pushed by state security forces were fabricated from the start.”

“Yet the same lies and perjured testimonies were used to force a conviction in the “financing terrorism case,” she said.

Irene Khan, the U.N. special rapporteur for freedom of opinion and expression, has expressed dismay over the long pretrial detention of Cumpio and added that the charges against her “following months of ‘red-tagging,’ surveillance, intimidation and harassment, appear to have been filed in retaliation for her work as a journalist.”

A Philippine government task force overseeing efforts to end the decades-long communist insurgency in the country said those who criticize the ruling as an act of intimidation against journalists or human rights workers were resorting to “a lie meant to shield criminal liability with moral blackmail.”

“They were convicted for financing a terrorist organization — plain and simple,” task force undersecretary Ernesto Torres Jr. said. “You do not launder terror funds and then hide behind press freedom or the Bible.”

Those who disagree with the ruling should consider an appeal, “not incitement, not international propaganda, and not delegitimizing the justice system,” Torres said.

All About Chris Stapleton’s Wife Morgane and Their 5 Kids

0

If you’ve seen Chris Stapleton in concert, then you’ve likely seen his wife as well. The country singer and songwriter, however, is far more selective about when and where he shares glimpses of his five children.

Stapleton’s touring band isn’t a true family band, but his wife does share the stage with him every night. She’s rarely far away when he performs on television, with the exception of his iconic Super Bowl National Anthem performance in 2023.

Related: Could Chris Stapleton Be Contemplating Requirement?

The couple have been married since October 2007, and they didn’t wait too long to start a family. Here’s everything you need to know about Chris Stapleton’s wife and kids.

Who Is Chris Stapleton’s Wife?

Chris Stapleton is married to Morgane Stapleton, whose maiden name is Hayes. They met in 2003 when both were aspiring singers and songwriters in Nashville. A short time later he asked her to write with him, but the Friday evening songwriting session produced very little music (wink, wink).

Chris and Morgane Stapleton married on Oct. 27, 2007. She was 24 years old and he was 29 at the time. Music has always been an anchor for their relationship as he trusts his wife’s opinion on songs and arrangements.

Additionally she’s his primary duet or harmony partner on stage, rarely letting him go solo, even on songs that seem to require it. When Chris and Justin Timberlake had a breakout moment at the 2015 CMA Awards, she was close by. In fact, it’s a lot of fun to watch her as he sings — it’s almost as if she was aware that this was his night and she’s celebrating in real time.

All About Chris Stapleton’s Kids

How private is Chris Stapleton when it comes to his children? The youngest was born dang near a decade ago and we don’t even know his name.

The rest we learned about second hand. Believe it or not, Reba McEntire spilled the news about two of the kids. You’ll see. The Stapleton’s have four sons and a daughter, age seven to 16.

Waylon and Ada Stapleton

In March 2009, Chris and Morgane welcomed their oldest child, son Waylon. In November 2010, daughter Ada arrived.

These two are the only Stapleton kids to appear publicly with the couple and they’ve done so several times. In 2019, the two joined dad for the premiere of Toy Story 4 and in 2022 they came to the ACM Awards.

Ada’s response to him winning an award was precious. She jumped from her chair and pumped her arms as Chris headed to the stage to accept. That all seems so long ago when you consider both of his older children will be legal to drive by the end of 2026.

Macon and Samuel Stapleton

Chris Stapleton’s wife Morgane welcomed twin boys about one month early in 2018. She’d shared she was pregnant the previous fall but it wasn’t clear when and nobody really knew that twins were coming.

On April 15, 2018, ACM Awards host Reba McEntire shared that the Stapletons would miss the show because of the arrival of two boys. It’s not clear when their exact birthday is, but it’s believed to be just a few days prior to the show.

“We would like to say a special thank you to all the incredible nurses & doctors at Centennial Women’s & Children’s Hospital in Nashville,” Morgane wrote on Instagram on April 17, 2017. “At more than a month early, we had a week long stay in the nicu & the incredible people there kept our boys healthy & happy. Words cannot express our gratitude for you all & what you did for our family.”

Chris Stapleton’s Fifth Child – Another Baby Boy

Morgane Stapleton gave birth to the couple’s fifth child in late April or early May 2019. Since sharing a few pics that shield his face on Instagram, neither half of the couple have said much about him.
