Transcript: Rep. Steve Scalise on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan,” Jan. 25, 2026

0

The following is the transcript of the interview with House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, a Louisiana Republican, that aired on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan” on Jan. 25, 2026.

MARGARET BRENNAN: And we turn now to House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, who joins us from New Orleans. Good morning to you.

HOUSE MAJORITY LEADER STEVE SCALISE: Good morning, Margaret.

MARGARET BRENNAN: I know in addition to being a leader in Congress, you have this unique experience of having been the victim of political violence yourself. You know how dangerous rhetoric can be. We’ve heard a lot of anger in the past 24 hours, and your fellow Louisianan Senator Bill Cassidy said the events in Minneapolis are not only incredibly disturbing, but the credibility of ICE and DHS are at stake. He called for a joint federal and state investigation. Would you join his call?

LEADER SCALISE: Well, I don’t question the credibility of ICE. They’re doing an incredibly hard job. They’re- look we are all, just feel sorry about what happened in Minneapolis. And this has happened over and over again. I mean, I’m not just talking about regarding ICE. I mean, they’ve got some failed local leadership. They let their city burn down years ago. They have chaos, it seems like all the time in places where other cities don’t. ICE is operating in a lot of cities, Margaret, and you don’t have these kind of incidents in any other city but Minneapolis–

MARGARET BRENNAN: — You don’t- don’t see these numbers either?– .

LEADER SCALISE: — and so, I wish yesterday didn’t happen. What’s that?

MARGARET BRENNAN: You don’t see these numbers either, though, when we looked at, for example, at the federal response in New Orleans. I mean, it’s just a fraction of the number of federal agents. Nearly 3,000 is quite a lot for a city the size of Minneapolis.

LEADER SCALISE: Well, that’s because they didn’t get resistance in cities like New Orleans, where, you know, when you look in Minneapolis, and I just listened to the chief, and you could hear him lamenting four times, I think he said that they’re strapped so thin. And let’s keep in mind, Minneapolis is a city that defunded their police. That’s not the chief’s fault. That’s the failed Democrat leader’s fault. But at the same time, when they defund the police, that leaves the chief stretched thin. And so he- was made a decision not to assist ICE– .

MARGARET BRENNAN: — He was talking- he was talking to- dealing with the federal issues. Because when you look at the Minnesota database, shooting victims down 76%, homicides down 67%, burglary down 39% year-to-date, sex offenses down, robberies down, motor vehicle theft is up. So he was talking about the response- the deal that they have now, that the stretch they have now dealing with the federal agents who are there.

LEADER SCALISE: Well, but remember, these agents have also arrested thousands of violent criminals in Minneapolis. That’s one of the reasons that crime is down, and we’re seeing that across the country. ICE- look again, anytime something bad happens, we all lament that. I wish it didn’t happen. But the rhetoric does need to be toned down, but we also need to remember, why is ICE doing this in cities? They’re enforcing federal law, Margaret. The law says you can’t be here illegally and if you’re committing violent crimes. The President made it clear, in fact, he was elected. President Trump was elected to get rid of criminals in our communities. 416,000 criminals have been arrested by ICE just in the last year. That has helped make our communities safer.

MARGARET BRENNAN: Well, it’s interesting you bring up the politics of this, because undoubtedly, the President was elected on the platform of immigration enforcement. There was a lot of support for it. But our latest poll shows more than half of Americans say ICE is making communities less safe, almost two thirds of Americans say they dislike the President’s approach to his deportation program. There is not public support for the way this policy is being implemented. Do you think there needs to be a reassessment?

LEADER SCALISE: Well, if you asked people in a poll, do you want violent criminals that are here illegally in your community? Yes or no? What do you think the answer is going to be? I will tell you, overwhelmingly, they will say, please get the violent criminals out. In fact, you’re seeing that on the ground in many, many cities where they are cooperating with ICE, where they don’t have sanctuary city policies, and where you don’t see by the way, people going in the streets breaking the law to interfere with law enforcement, which is a felony.

MARGARET BRENNAN: You have been a supporter of the Second Amendment. When Secretary Noem says, “I don’t know of any peaceful protester that shows up with a gun and ammo rather than a sign.” Do you believe Americans have the right to bear arms while they’re protesting?

LEADER SCALISE: Well, first of all, I’m a co-sponsor of Louisiana’s law that allows you to have a concealed carry permit. It’s worked very well there. I don’t know the state law in Minnesota. I know in a state like Louisiana, and frankly, most states, you are not allowed to carry a gun while you’re committing another crime and interfering with law enforcement is a felony. It’s something that, unfortunately, we’re seeing in a lot of cities. You even had the police chief yesterday, Chief O’Hara, that you just had on, yesterday said of the protests going on after the shooting, that they were unlawful. Yes, he actually said it was an unlawful assembly, what a lot of people are doing. And they were throwing things at ICE agents. Throwing projectiles that could harm ICE agents–

MARGARET BRENNAN: — Yeah, he wasn’t talking about the victim —

LEADER SCALISE: — So, let’s tone this down. And-and leaders in Minnesota, by the way, have been ratcheting up the rhetoric. I mean, you saw the governor, Governor Walz said they’re Gestapo. He said they’re violently hurting people.

MARGARET BRENNAN: I’m going to have to take this commercial break and let you finish the thought on the other side of it. If you could stay with us, Leader, we have more questions. We’ll be right back.

[COMMERCIAL BREAK]

MARGARET BRENNAN: Welcome back to Face the Nation and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise. Leader, we have seen a letter that Attorney General Pam Bondi sent to Governor Walz out in Minnesota, offering to end the federal surge if the state does a number of things, among them giving access to the food assistance programs and voter registration logs. What’s the purpose of that? What’s the intent?

LEADER SCALISE: Well, I haven’t read that letter between Pam Bondi and the governor, but I know that we are investigating tens of billions of dollars of potential fraud coming out of Minnesota. There have been hearings that have already been held. We have a lot of whistle blowers talking to us about major theft of taxpayer money coming out of Minnesota, and these are stealing programs from learning centers, from disabled students, programs that are being stolen, and the Governor did nothing about it. Congress is–

MARGARET BRENNAN:– But voter registration logs?–

LEADER SCALISE: — Investigating that aggressively.

MARGARET BRENNAN: As a conservative, doesn’t that make you a little uncomfortable that they’re demanding the state hand- hand over voter registration logs like, what’s the purpose of that to end ICE enforcement?

LEADER SCALISE: Well, I haven’t seen the letter. I know- I know we’re trying in Congress to deal with putting laws on the books that will make sure that we protect the integrity of the vote nationwide. States like Minnesota have had problems with voter integrity. We want a national standard, the SAVE Act, which makes sure illegals can’t vote, but also making sure you show a picture ID. Those are things we’re pushing for that’s across the board federally.

MARGARET BRENNAN: Non-citizens cannot vote. But I want to ask you ICE- about all the things that have happened this week, even before that shooting in Minnesota. ICE has said his officers can go into homes without judicial warrants. ICE shot unarmed Renee Good, as you know, claimed that she was a domestic terrorist. An FBI agent resigned after she was ordered not to investigate the officer who shot her. ICE detained at least five kids, including five-year-old Liam Ramos, who was taken into custody by men in masks. Does this picture sound right to you? Are you comfortable with how this is being implemented?

LEADER SCALISE: Let’s keep in mind that the five year old’s father was here illegally and was evading law enforcement and abandoned his child. ICE actually–

MARGARET BRENNAN:  –the family–

LEADER SCALISE: –protected the child–

MARGARET BRENNAN: –The family disputes that. The administration has a problem with the previous administration’s legal system for asylum, that’s- they don’t like the app he used to file for asylum.

[START CROSSTALK]

LEADER SCALISE: Well, Joe- Joe Biden allowed–

MARGARET BRENNAN: –And they dispute that he fled–.

LEADER SCALISE: –millions of people to come into our country illegally, including very violent people, Margaret–

MARGARET BRENNAN: –But they are retroactively trying to change the legality of the status–

LEADER SCALISE: –people from prisons in other countries. President Trump was elected. The number one issue last year was President Trump saying–

MARGARET BRENNAN: –Absolutely–

LEADER SCALISE: — I’m going to secure the border, and he’s doing it. But also he’s removing violent people. 416,000–

MARGARET BRENNAN: –The father did not have a criminal record of any kind of violence–

LEADER SCALISE: –criminals- illegals have been arrested by ICE. 416,000 have been arrested by ICE. These are very bad people, by the way–

MARGARET BRENNAN: 47% of ICE detainees have criminal charges or convictions. 47%.

LEADER SCALISE: –ICE just put up a website. Not ICE, Homeland Security, worst of the worst DHS. Go Google worst of the worst DHS. State by state, they show you all the people that have been picked up in each state. Your state, you can find out horrible people, murderers, rapists, that they picked up that would be on the street–

MARGARET BRENNAN: –That doesn’t apply to the father or five-year-old Liam–

LEADER SCALISE: –today if President Trump wasn’t securing this country.

MARGARET BRENNAN: –or the two year old who was separated from her mother.

LEADER SCALISE: –that father was here illegally and abandoned his child–

MARGARET BRENNAN: They are not the worst of the worst, are they?

LEADER SCALISE:  –Go look at the website. It shows you who they picked up–

MARGARET BRENNAN: –Are they the worst of the worst, sir?

LEADER SCALISE: 416,000 people with violent criminal records. These are people- and by the way, America today has the lowest murder rate that we’ve had since 1900 in part because of President Trump’s actions to get these violent people off our streets. 416,000 have been removed. Do you want them still out on our streets?

MARGARET BRENNAN: No.

LEADER SCALISE: I don’t think most people do.

MARGARET BRENNAN: No and I don’t think–

LEADER SCALISE: –This is a hard job ICE has.

MARGARET BRENNAN: –They do, indeed–

LEADER SCALISE: And local law enforcement, local officials, the mayor, the governor, should not be encouraging people to go out on the streets and break the law by interfering with law enforcement. That’s a felony to interfere with law enforcement–

MARGARET BRENNAN: –And American citizens are concerned about American citizens being shot, and that’s why we are asking the questions–

LEADER SCALISE: Yeah, and we don’t have that chaos in other cities.

MARGARET BRENNAN: -about the tax payer funded federal–

LEADER SCALISE: –Minneapolis has its own problems–

MARGARET BRENNAN: Okay.

LEADER SCALISE: –failed leadership that has led to a lot of this, and it’s unfortunate it happened. I wish it didn’t happen. Their failed leaders need to look in the mirror and tone it down.

MARGARET BRENNAN: I have to go next to our next guest. Leader Scalise, thank you for your time today.

Carrie Underwood Called Out by Luke Bryan on ‘American Idol’

0

Carrie Underwood is back on American Idol this season, and if history tells us anything, it’s that she’s going to bring the emotion — even if she doesn’t admit it.

During Season 23, the “Southbound” singer swore up and down that she’s not a crier.

Seated at the judges’ table next to Luke Bryan, Underwood insisted that she rarely gets emotional, even as Bryan looked on in disbelief.

“It’s okay to cry, for the record. I’m not a crier,” she said in a video shared by Idol‘s official Instagram page.

The camera quickly cut to Bryan’s face — and he clearly wasn’t buying it. He knew what was coming next, and so did the producers.

The first clip showed a single tear rolling down her cheek during an emotional audition.

Then came more clips from past episodes — the mother of two is wiping tears, holding back sobs, and getting visibly choked up during contestant performances.

Toward the end of the montage, after one particularly emotional audition, Bryan tried to ask for her opinion — but she couldn’t even get the words out.

“Should I go to Lionel?” Bryan joked, as Underwood nodded, crying too much to respond.

Carrie Underwood and her husband, Mike Fisher, owned a 4-bedroom, 4-bathroom, 2-half-bathroom home in an affluent Nashville suburb called Brentwood. The 7,000-square-foot mansion features a wet bar, fitness center and tennis court, as well as a four-car garage, walk-out basement with heated marble floors and extra appliances, including a sub-zero fridge and wine fridge. That house is where Underwood suffered a devastating fall in 2017.

The couple sold the luxurious home for $1,410,000 in March of 2019, after they moved into the massive dream home that they had spent several years building from scratch.

Row erupts within UK’s Labour Party after popular mayor blocked from election

0

LONDON — A row erupted Sunday within Britain’s governing Labour Party after the ambitious mayor of Manchester was prevented from trying to re-enter Parliament at a special election in the city in the coming weeks, with critics claiming that Prime Minister Keir Starmer did not want to see a potential rival back in the House of Commons.

Andy Burnham, who has been in charge of the Greater Manchester region since 2017, made a request to Labour’s governing committee on Saturday to stand as the party’s candidate in the upcoming election for the Gorton and Denton constituency, which is expected to take place by the end of February.

If he ended up winning that election in a traditionally safe Labour seat, then he would have to stand down from his job as mayor, meaning that there would likely have to be another special election there. Burnham’s mandate ends in May 2028.

The decision to block Burnham was made by a 10-strong group of Labour’s National Executive Committee, the body behind the party’s election machinery.

Labour said the NEC had decided to deny Burnham permission to stand in order to avoid “an unnecessary election” for Manchester mayor, which “would have a substantial and disproportionate impact on party campaign resources.”

Labour is widely predicted to suffer a drubbing at a raft of elections in May — Britain’s equivalent of the U.S. midterms. If current opinion polls are any guide, then Labour is expected to lose power in Wales for the first time since the legislature was created in 1999, fall way short of reclaiming power in Scotland and get battered in local elections in England.

Since winning July 2024’s general election by a landslide, Labour has seen its poll ratings tank, partly because of a series of policy missteps, which have been directly linked to Starmer’s decision-making.

Other parties, including the anti-immigration Reform U.K. and the Greens, have been the main beneficiaries of Labour’s apparent drop in support.

The prime minister’s poll ratings are particularly dire at present and many inside the party think he may face a leadership challenge if May’s elections end up being as bad as predicted.

Burnham, who served in Labour governments in the 2000s under prime ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, has made no secret of his ambition to lead the party at some stage in the future. Burnham, widely known as the “King of the North” in reference to the television fantasy show “Game of Thrones,” has twice before fought for the Labour leadership and lost.

Though Burnham insisted he would be a team player in his request on Saturday, many Starmer allies appear unconvinced given he has expressed several views that put him at odds with the prime minister, notably on economic policy. Last September, he said he wanted to “launch a debate” about the direction of policy and how to defeat Reform.

Labour lawmaker John Slinger said the “quick and clear decision” meant the party could “move on from the damaging introspection and psychodrama of the last week” and “pull together” behind the eventual candidate.

Others were aghast at the decision.

Former Cabinet minister Louise Haigh said it was “incredibly disappointing” and called for the NEC to “change course and make the right decision.”

POLYPHIA’s TIM HENSON Launches Self-Produced Solo Era With “Original Sin” & Announces Clothing Brand

0

Tim Henson has officially stepped into uncharted territory. The genre-defying guitarist and Polyphia visionary released “Original Sin,” his first-ever fully self-produced solo single, accompanied by a music video and the announcement of a new clothing brand bearing the same name.

While Henson is best known for reshaping modern instrumental music with Polyphia, “Original Sin” marks the first time he has personally produced, mixed, and shaped every element of a release on his own — offering fans an unfiltered glimpse into his creative instincts.

Originally conceived on keyboard and synth textures, the track took on new life when Henson translated those ideas to nylon-string guitar, an instrument he hasn’t centered since Polyphia‘s 2022 standout “Playing God.”

“‘Original Sin’ started as something digital with synths and keys, but once I translated it to my nylon-string guitar, everything clicked,” Henson explained. “I wanted to play with contradiction: a waltz that feels like it’s driving forward, something elegant but uncomfortable.”

Conceptually, Henson frames the song less as a moral statement and more as a meditation on choice and agency. “If you’re forced to do the right thing, it doesn’t mean anything,” he said. “That idea — freedom, temptation, consequence — is something I’ve been thinking about a lot.”

That philosophy extends beyond the music itself. The “Original Sin” title functions as a metaphor for creation and the accompanying video visually reinforces that tension. The same mindset carries into Henson‘s newly announced Original Sin clothing brand, envisioned as a high-end creative extension of the release. According to Henson, the line merges elevated design with the same meticulous attention to detail that defines his music.

While Polyphia remains a central focus for 2026, this solo release offers a rare detour — one that highlights Henson‘s curiosity beyond band dynamics. With millions of followers across Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, his reach extends far past guitar culture, intersecting with fashion, philosophy, design and forward-thinking art.

Breaking down Pats-Broncos, Rams-Seahawks via Next Gen Stats

0

Many think conference championship Sunday is the best day of NFL football, because it features two potentially great games and more focus on football than on Super Bowl spectacle.

And one of the most intriguing storylines Sunday is Denver Broncos quarterback Jarrett Stidham, who is starting in place of the injured Bo Nix. This will be Stidham’s first start since 2023 and the fifth since he was drafted in 2019.

But Stidham’s résumé does have some positives. He had an expected points added (EPA) per dropback of +0.04 and a success rate of 46.1% in his past four years (149 total pass attempts), according to Next Gen Stats. Both are above the league averages (-0.03 EPA/DB, 44.2% success rate) in that span. In fact, Stidham’s success rate from his past four years combined (46.1%) was higher than Nix’s this season (44.5%).

Meanwhile, Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford had a success rate of just 30.4% in the divisional round overtime win over the Chicago Bears. That was the ninth-lowest among the 238 playoff starting quarterbacks in the past 10 years. Stafford was the only QB in the bottom 15 who didn’t lose.

Here is a deeper look at the two conference championship games through the lens of Next Gen Stats.

Can the Broncos exploit Patriots left tackle Will Campbell?

In two playoff games against the Los Angeles Chargers and Houston Texans, Campbell allowed 10 pressures, including four sacks, in 73 pass-blocking reps (13.7%). That’s the most pressures and sacks for the Patriots.

But expect offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to help him. The Patriots provided chip block help to both Campbell and right tackle Morgan Moses. Campbell received chip help on 13.3% of his pass sets, the eighth-highest mark among left tackles, and Moses received chip help on 15% of his pass sets, the sixth-highest mark among right tackles (with a minimum of 200 pass blocks).

In the Broncos’ win over the Bills, their pass rush pressured quarterback Josh Allen on 32% of his dropbacks. In the regular season, the Broncos led the league in sacks (68). One of their preferred strategies was sending at least five pass rushers. Denver did it 33.7% of the time and generated a 50% pressure rate, finishing with 29 sacks, second most.

But blitzing Patriots quarterback Drake Maye could be costly. Against the blitz this season, Maye finished with 1,491 passing yards (second), 15 touchdowns (tied for third), a passer rating of 129.2 (first) and an EPA dropback of .28 (third).

Against the Texans, Maye had a passer rating of 103 with a touchdown against the blitz. The Texans didn’t do it often (only 18% of his dropbacks), but when they did, Maye capitalized.

Also, when pressured, Maye averaged a league-high 8.8 yards per attempt, and his 10 touchdown passes tied Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert for the most. One of the reasons he’s effective under pressure is he’ll push the ball down field, but that can lead to mistakes.

Through two playoff games, Maye has been strip-sacked five times and lost two fumbles. In the Broncos’ divisional round win over the Bills, outside linebacker Nik Bonitto recorded a strip sack, which was then recovered by defensive tackle Malcolm Roach.

So, keep eyes on Maye’s ball security.

From a secondary standpoint, Patriots All-Pro cornerback Christian Gonzalez was tested 16 times in the divisional round. He allowed just seven catches for 58 yards. Overall, in his two playoff games he has allowed a 33.3% completion percentage with three pass breakups.

The other side features a superstar cornerback in Broncos veteran Pat Surtain II. He has aligned as the full-time boundary — short-side — cornerback in each of the Broncos’ past three games, playing 118 snaps as the boundary corner. Surtain had played 321 snaps as the boundary corner and 238 snaps as the field corner this season.

Why does it matter? Surtain was targeted on just 11.4% of his snaps as the boundary corner, the second-lowest mark among 64 cornerbacks who played at least 100 such snaps. He allowed 0.6 yards per coverage snap (fifth fewest).

When it comes to Maye’s deep passing versus the Broncos defending the deep pass, we’ll see strength versus strength.

Maye’s 52.1% deep ball completion percentage was the second highest this season. But the Broncos’ 20.4% deep completion percentage allowed was the lowest. The Broncos did not allow a single completion on Allen’s nine deep passes in the divisional round, intercepting two of the throws.

Los Angeles Rams at Seattle Seahawks, 6:30 p.m. ET, Fox

This matchup features two superstar receivers in Seattle’s Jaxon Smith-Njigba and the Rams’ Puka Nacua, and while Davante Adams isn’t the All-Pro receiver he once was, he’s still a dangerous threat.

Nacua averaged a league-high 3.8 yards per route this season and Smith-Njigba averaged 3.7 yards per route. They were at least 1.2 yards per route above the next-closest player — the Baltimore RavensZay Flowers (2.5).

The Rams must pay attention to Nacua in motion. He gained a league-high 473 receiving yards on snaps after he went in motion, the most by any player in a season since at least 2018. This also marks back-to-back seasons in which he has gained at least 400 such yards.

Smith-Njigba led the NFL with 956 receiving yards when aligned in the slot last season, then followed it up by leading the league with 1,378 receiving yards when aligned out wide this season. He is the first player in the Next Gen Stats era (since 2016) to lead the NFL in receiving yards from the slot in one season and from out wide in another.

Smith-Njigba can hurt you at either spot, but he aligned out wide on 81.4% of his snaps this season. He was able to turn that into a league-high 44 explosive receptions (15-plus yards), the most by any wide receiver in a season over the past two years.

He and Nacua can cook defenses running any type of route, too. Smith-Njigba gained 100 or more receiving yards on eight different route types this season. The only other wideout to do that? You guessed it, Nacua.

Smith-Njigba ranked top five on five different routes, including go routes, where his 279 yards were his most on any route. Nacua led in receiving yards on post routes (278 yards) and in-routes (253). Both players excelled when running in-breaking routes, as Smith-Njigba (828 yards) trailed Nacua’s league-leading yardage mark of 831 by three yards.

One strength for the Seahawks is quarterback Sam Darnold and play-action, and that’s also a weakness for the Rams.

The Rams struggled to defend play-action, specifically when they used base personnel. In base personnel, they allowed a 78.0% completion percentage and 10.9 yards per attempt when defending play-action with that grouping on the field, both of which ranked as the second-highest marks in the NFL.

They were much better when they had a nickel grouping in defending play-action. They allowed a 64.2% completion percentage and 6.7 yards per attempt, both of which ranked below the league average marks of 66.8% and 7.9.

With play-action, Darnold is tied for the highest EPA per dropback (.41) among starters and his total EPA is 58.8, the highest.

In the trenches, the Seahawks’ pass rush generated the fourth-highest pressure rate (38.9%) and the Rams’ offensive line allowed the second-lowest pressure rate this season (27.3%) despite facing the sixth-highest blitz rate (32.9%).

On the flip side, the Rams generated the fifth-highest pressure rate (38.0%) and the Seahawks’ offensive line allowed the fifth-lowest pressure rate this season (29.2%).

When it comes to pressure from the inside, Sunday will feature the top four defensive tackle duos in total pressures generated:
