Big Game betting preview, picks

Both the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots had to earn their way into the Big Game with dramatic wins in the NFC Championship Game and AFC Championship Game, respectively. Seattle won a high-scoring 31-27 battle against the Los Angeles Rams with a few timely defensive stops and New England outlasted the Denver Broncos for a 10-7 win in blizzard conditions.

The Seahawks went 14-3 during the regular season to win the NFC West while the Patriots were also 14-3 and won the AFC East. The last time these two teams met was Sept. 15 of last season, with Seattle earning a 23-20 win over New England in overtime but both franchises have made some pretty big changes since then. Sam Darnold is now the starting quarterback for the Seahawks and the Patriots went through a coaching change, with Mike Vrabel taking the team to new heights in his first season.

Seattle vs. New England is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. ET kickoff on Sunday, Feb. 8 at Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers. The latest NFL odds list the Seahawks as 4.5-point favorites while the over/under is 46 points. There are also dozens of NFL player props already available, with Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker III anytime touchdown scorer listed at -190 and Maye’s over/under for total passing yards at 225.5.

Most popular Big Game bets

The Big Game is the most wagered upon sporting event in the United States and there are a staggering number of offerings at online sportsbooks around the world. In addition to standard wagers like spread, total and money line, there are hundreds of NFL player props and wagering lines for novelty props like National Anthem length, Gatorade color, which songs Bad Bunny will perform at the halftime show and more. Check out SportsLine’s sports betting guide for detailed explanations of bet types.

MVP props are always popular among actual sports bettors and it’s traditionally been a quarterback-heavy award. QBs have won in 34 of the previous 59 title games. Wide receivers have won the award eight times and running backs have won the award seven times, while defenders have won MVP honors 10 times and a return specialist (Desmond Howard) won the award in 1997. Odds vary from book-to-book, but Sam Darnold is the favorite with odds ranging from +125 to +130 and Drake Maye listed just behind him with odds from +230 to +240.

The coin toss is also one of the largest betting markets every year during the Big Game and most sportsbooks will offer fair odds (-100). Thus far, tails has hit 31 times previously while heads has come up 28 times. When these two franchises met 11 years ago, tails hit and the Seahawks won the toss.

Republican candidate for Minnesota governor Chris Madel, a Minneapolis attorney who offered free legal advice to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer who shot and killed Renee Good, ended his campaign in a surprise video announcement Monday.

The move comes amid growing calls from Republicans to investigate federal immigration tactics in Minnesota after a U.S. Border Patrol agent fatally shot Alex Pretti in Minneapolis on Saturday.

Madel went a step further than most Republicans in his video, saying that while he supports the goal of deporting “the worst of the worst” from Minnesota, he thinks President Donald Trump’s administration’s immigration enforcement operation in the Twin Cities has gone too far and is an “unmitigated disaster.”

“I cannot support the national Republicans’ stated retribution on the citizens of our state,” Madel said. “Nor can I count myself a member of a party that would do so.”

Madel said that U.S. citizens, “particularly those of color, live in fear.”

“United States citizens are carrying papers to prove their citizenship,” Madel said. “That’s wrong.”

Madel said he personally had heard from local Asian and Hispanic law enforcement officers who had been pulled over by ICE.

“I have read about and I have spoken to help countless United States citizens who have been detained in Minnesota due to the color of their skin,” Madel said.

He also said it was unconstitutional and wrong for federal officers to “raid homes” using a civil warrant, rather than one issued by a judge.

Madel was among a large group of candidates seeking to replace Democratic Gov. Tim Walz, who dropped his reelection bid earlier this month. Democratic U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar has filed paperwork to run, but has yet to publicly launch a campaign to succeed Walz.

Madel, in his Monday video posted on the social platform X, described himself as a “pragmatist,” and said national Republicans “have made it nearly impossible for a Republican to win a statewide election in Minnesota.”

Madel did not immediately return a text message seeking comment.

Madel, 59, was a political newcomer making his first run for public office. He got into the race on Dec. 1.

Madel brought 30 years of experience as an attorney to the race, including cases taking on corporate corruption. Madel also defended law enforcement officers, including the 2024 case of a Minnesota state trooper who fatally shot a Black man after a traffic stop. Prosecutors dropped charges against Trooper Ryan Londregan in the killing of Ricky Cobb II, saying the case would have been difficult to prove.

Madel agreed to offer pro bono legal advice to Ross, although no criminal charges or civil lawsuits have been filed. Madel said he was honored to help Ross, particularly during a gubernatorial campaign.

“Justice requires excellent legal representation,” Madel said.

Madel announced his decision ending his candidacy two days after a Border Patrol officer shot and killed Pretti on Saturday in Minneapolis.

Explosion and fire at cookie factory in Greece kills 5 women

0

An explosion and fire at a cookie factory in central Greece killed five female night shift workers and left seven injured, authorities said Monday.

The injured, including a firefighter, were hospitalized after the blast at the Violanta biscuit plant near the city of Trikala, about 200 miles north of Athens.

The blast occurred during the night shift, and the resulting fire gutted the plant. Fire crews battled the blaze for hours before recovering four bodies – all women – from the destroyed building. Parts of a fifth female body were later recovered, and were to be formally identified using DNA tests, fire officials said.

“Unfortunately, the day began in the shadow of the tragic accident in Trikala, at a modern food production facility,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a televised address at a Cabinet meeting. “Our thoughts today are with the families of the victims. On behalf of the entire Cabinet, I express to them our deepest condolences.”

Violanta, a locally-based business, has national distribution for a range of products, including wholewheat cookies, chocolate‑sandwich biscuits and cereal bars.

Police said investigators suspect the explosion may have originated near the ovens, which operate around the clock. Six workers and one firefighter were being treated at a hospital in Trikala, none in serious condition.

Television footage showed the gutted remains of the Violanta factory.

“Today, a serious incident occurred at our factory premises during the night shift, due to a cause that remains unknown at this time,” the company said in a statement.

The blaze is one of Greece’s most fatal industrial accidents and one of the worst in many years.

In 1992, 15 people died in a refinery explosion in the industrial zone of Elefsina, near the port of Piraeus.

The Violanta plant, the company’s first and biggest, produced 12,500 tons of biscuits, cookies and wafers per year, according to the company website.

The brand is among the fastest-growing in Greece, with a major presence in shops, and exports to around 40 countries.

Ethiopia declares the end of its first Marburg virus outbreak

0

NAIROBI, Kenya — Ethiopia on Monday declared the end of its first outbreak of Marburg virus after completing the mandatory 42 days with no new confirmed cases.

A total of 14 cases, including nine deaths and five who recovered, were confirmed in the southern region bordering South Sudan since Nov. 14, 2025. An additional five deaths were classified as possible cases, the World Health Organization said.

Three health workers were infected, two of whom had died and one recovered, the WHO said.

The WHO said it provided Ethiopia’s Ministry of Health with technical support in surveillance, laboratory diagnostics, case management, infection prevention and control, coordination and logistics.

The Marburg virus originates in fruit bats and spreads between people through close contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals or contaminated surfaces, such as bedsheets.

Symptoms include fever, muscle pain, diarrhea, vomiting and, in some cases, death from extreme blood loss. There is no licensed vaccine or treatment for Marburg.
