Gus Malzahn retires: Former Auburn coach led Tigers to 2013 BCS title game

Former Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn has retired from coaching following a 35-year career that began at small-town Arkansas high schools and peaked on college football’s biggest stage in the SEC.
The coach told CBS Sports he contemplated retirement following the 2024 season at UCF but opted to continue coaching when Florida State’s Mike Norvell offered an opportunity to be the Seminoles’ offensive coordinator.
“I’m excited to spend more time with my family and to focus on what the Lord is calling me to do next,” he said.
Malzahn led Auburn for eight seasons, where he won an SEC title and finished as runner-up in his first season in 2013. That season included two improbable late-game plays to defeat rivals Georgia and Alabama. The “Kick Six” against the Tide in which Auburn’s Chris Davis returned a missed field goal 100 yards as time expired lifted the Tigers into the SEC Championship Game.
He was 105-62 overall as an FBS head coach during his time leading Arkansas State, Auburn and UCF. He most recently led the Knights for four seasons, helping the program transition from the Group of Five level to the Big 12. He spent the 2025 season at Florida State as offensive coordinator, defeating former rival Alabama 31-17 in the Seminoles’ season opener.
“After 35 years, it’s time for me to step away from coaching,” Malzahn said in a statement released by Florida State. “I am excited to spend more time with my family and focus on the next chapter of my life. I want to thank Coach Norvell for giving me the opportunity to coach at such a prestigious program. I will continue to follow Florida State, and I believe great things are ahead for the program under Coach Norvell’s leadership and for the offense under Tim Harris.”
In total, Malzahn won two SEC titles as a coordinator and head coach. He coached Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton in 2010, and two more finalists: Auburn’s Tre Mason in 2013 and Arkansas’ Darren McFadden in 2006.
He transitioned from high school football to the SEC in 2006 when he was hired by Arkansas as offensive coordinator after leading Springdale High School to an undefeated season while becoming arguably the greatest team in Arkansas preps history. From there, he coordinated record-breaking offenses at Tulsa and Auburn before he became head coach at Arkansas State in 2012, where he won the Sun Belt championship.
“I want to thank Coach Malzahn for his effort and dedication to our program over the last 14 months,” FSU coach Mike Norvell said. “He did a wonderful job coordinating our offense and calling plays in 2025, and he has set a strong foundation for us to continue building on in 2026 behind the coordination of Tim Harris and the multiple other assistant coaches who are returning. Coach Harris has a complete understanding of the offensive scheme, and his ability to effectively share that knowledge with his players will continue to be a benefit for our offense.”
Auburn fired Malzahn following the pandemic-shortened 2020 season with a 6-4 record. The Tigers have not recorded a winning season since his departure.
GOP senator urges DOJ to challenge immigration detention contract bill

Republican State Sen. Jim Townsend is urging U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and the Department of Justice to intervene over House Bill 9. HB 9, the Immigrant Safety Act, aims to prohibit state and local governments in New Mexico from contracting with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The bill has passed the House and is now moving to the Senate during the 30-day legislative session in Santa Fe.In a letter, Townsend raised constitutional concerns regarding the measure and referenced a recent federal court decision between Core Civic and the state of New Jersey. Core Civic is a private company that owns detention facilities, including in New Mexico. In 2021, New Jersey passed a law barring local state and government agencies and private detention facilities from entering an immigration detention agreement, unless it conflicted with federal law. An appeals court sided with Core Civic, stating that the state cannot ban private companies from contracting with the federal government to detain immigrants.KOAT legal analyst John Day said New Mexico’s bill is different from New Jersey’s law and may be more likely to withstand a legal challenge.”The New Jersey law apparently only sought to regulate the contracts between private companies and ICE. New Mexico law doesn’t seek to do that. It doesn’t seek to regulate private companies’ ability to contract,” Day said.KOAT reached out to Democrats in the House and Senate for a response to Townsend’s letter, but did not get an official response.

Trump threatens to sue Trevor Noah over joke about Jeffrey Epstein’s island
President Donald Trump is threatening to sue Trevor Noah over a joke at last night’s Grammy Awards, saying in an overnight post on Truth Social that the comedian’s crack claiming he visited Jeffrey Epstein’s island was “false and defamatory.”
Noah, who hosted the awards show, had poked at Trump’s relationship with the late sex offender and the president’s ambitions for the United States to take over Greenland.
“That is a Grammy that every artist wants almost as much as Trump wants Greenland,” Noah said. “Which makes sense, I mean, because Epstein’s island is gone, he needs a new one to hang out on with Bill Clinton.”
In the post on Truth Social, Trump said that he has never visited Epstein’s island, “nor anywhere close, and until tonight’s false and defamatory statement, have never been accused of being there, not even by the Fake News Media.” Epstein had also previously denied that former President Bill Clinton had ever visited his island.
“Noah, a total loser, better get his facts straight, and get them straight fast,” the post continued. “It looks like I’ll be sending my lawyers to sue this poor, pathetic, talentless, dope of an M.C., and suing him for plenty$.”
Noah’s agency and management did not immediately respond to NBC News’ request for comment. Neither Trump nor Clinton have been charged with any crimes related to Epstein, and they have both denied any wrongdoing. A representative for Clinton did not immediately respond to NBC News’ request for comment.
Epstein’s island in the Caribbean was an alleged spot for abuse of women and girls. Trump has previously said that he rejected Epstein’s invitation to visit the island, and he has said that the two had a falling out years before Epstein died by suicide in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges. Trump has also said that he kicked Epstein out of his Mar-a-Lago club after Epstein “took people that worked for me.”
Trump has a history of suing media over unfavorable or what he has claimed was defamatory coverage, which he referred to in his overnight Truth Social post. Trump pointed to his lawsuits against ABC News and CBS News, both of which ultimately ended in multimillion-dollar settlements for the president.
“Get ready Noah, I’m going to have some fun with you!” Trump added.
Awards show hosts have for years joked about politics during their programs. At least a dozen artists, including Bad Bunny and Billie Eilish, used their acceptance speeches Sunday to criticize Immigration and Customs Enforcement over the administration’s aggressive — and in several cases fatal — deportation efforts. Several artists also wore pins reading “ICE OUT.”
THE EXPLOITED Vocalist WATTIE BUCHAN Collapses On Stage, Upcoming Shows Cancelled
The Exploited frontman Walter David “Wattie” Buchan collapsed onstage during the band’s performance on Saturday, January 31 at Schlachthof in Wiesbaden, Germany.
Buchan went down during the first song of the set, prompting immediate medical attention at the venue before he was transported to a local hospital. According to information provided on-site, the punk icon was responsive when taken for treatment.
On Sunday, February 1, The Exploited issued the following statement via social media: “As Wattie collapsed yesterday during the show in Wiesbaden/Germany, we have to cancel the upcoming gigs in Tallinn & Riga. We try to find new dates ASAP. Rostock and Berlin we announce as soon as we have more info.
“Wattie is in hospital right now for observation and checkups. He had a flu the last days and got dehydrated. That’s why he collapsed. Thanks and love to all the nice people who took care and immediately gave first aid. We will keep you updated!”
The incident marks the latest in a series of serious health scares for the 68-year-old punk legend, who has a long history of heart-related issues. In December 2022, Buchan was rushed to a hospital after collapsing onstage during a concert in Colombia, following a suspected heart attack. During that show, he reportedly began feeling unwell while performing “Army Life,” clutching his chest before dropping to his knees.
Earlier, in February 2014, Buchan suffered a heart attack while performing in Lisbon, Portugal, an event that led to him undergoing quadruple heart bypass surgery later that year. Additional shows were canceled in August 2018 and September 2019 due to ongoing health complications. At present, Wattie Buchan remains hospitalized for observation, with further tour updates expected once more information becomes available

Royal Rumble takeaways: Who will Roman Reigns face at WrestleMania?
After an action-packed night in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Roman Reigns and Liv Morgan are standing tall as the winners of the men’s and women’s Royal Rumble matches. Reigns can challenge for the championship of his choice, and he’ll face an important decision.
Morgan, who won her first women’s Royal Rumble after being a two-time runner-up, is in the same situation, but her actions during the match could have some consequences for The Judgment Day that will play out over the coming weeks.
Elsewhere on the Royal Rumble card, Bron Breakker is facing a big problem, Gunther and Drew McIntyre had busy nights, and some young stars got their chance to shine.
It’s time to look ahead to WrestleMania and see what’s next for the biggest superstars in WWE on the road to Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas between now and April.
Who will Roman Reigns challenge at WrestleMania 42?

Roman Reigns outlasts Gunther to win second Royal Rumble
Roman Reigns throws Gunther over the top rope to win his second Royal Rumble.
Reigns survived Gunther and the rest of the field in the men’s Royal Rumble to win the battle royal for the second time in his career. Reigns can choose between two champions to challenge for a belt at WrestleMania 42 — Undisputed WWE champion Drew McIntyre or world heavyweight champion CM Punk.
Punk and Reigns were involved in last year’s WrestleMania 41 Night 1 main event, though both lost to Seth Rollins. They also worked together despite animosity at Survivor Series: War Games. Punk and Reigns have had only one televised singles match in 2014, and the main event of WrestleMania is the right place for the rematch to take place.
Bron Breakker was a favorite to win the Royal Rumble, but instead, he lasted less than a minute before being eliminated by Oba Femi. Breakker was attacked by a masked assailant, who used a Seth Rollins-style stomp before running away in the crowd. In October, Breakker and The Vision betrayed Rollins, who has been inactive because of a shoulder injury. If Rollins were to return, a featured match between the two — and Paul Heyman — would be the biggest match of Breakker’s young career.
Are The Judgement Days numbered?

Liv Morgan comes out on top at the 2026 Women’s Royal Rumble
Liv Morgan eliminates Tiffany Stratton to win the 2026 Women’s Royal Rumble.
Liv Morgan outlasted 29 other women to claim her first Royal Rumble win, eliminating Tiffany Stratton after a chaotic final stretch that involved Sol Ruca. However, the most fascinating elimination was Morgan eliminating her Judgement Day teammate, Raquel Rodriguez. The pair had been working as a unit for much of the match.
Morgan seems likely to challenge the women’s world champion, Stephanie Vaquer, at WrestleMania. But that could change Monday, when Vaquer puts her belt on the line in a Philadelphia Street Fight against Rodriguez on “Raw.” Rodriguez and Morgan were tag team champions before Morgan suffered a shoulder injury.
Vaquer and Rodriguez present interesting opponents for Morgan. Vaquer and Morgan have never faced each other one-on-one. Or, could a Judgement Day breakup be impending?
Elsewhere in the match, tag team partners Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss were the first two Rumble entrants, and they avoided confrontation until Flair accidentally eliminated Bliss midway through the match. The same situation unfolded with The Kabuki Warriors, as Kairi Sane accidentally eliminated Asuka. Tension with either team could be a factor leading up to WrestleMania.
Sol Ruca and Lash Legend had impressive showings, with Legend eliminating The Bella Twins (Nikki and Brie), Flair and Iyo Sky. The elimination of Sky could set up Legend and partner Nia Jax to challenge for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship.
The championship picture on “SmackDown” is cloudier. WWE women’s champion Jade Cargill defeated Tiffany Stratton in November for the championship. Stratton, who returned from injury Saturday, could be ready for a rematch, whether at Elimination Chamber in February or WrestleMania. Former champion Bianca Belair hasn’t been seen since suffering a hand injury at last year’s WrestleMania; her potential return could set up a challenge with her former partner Cargill.
Can Cody Rhodes still get his rematch with Drew McIntyre?

Drew McIntyre retains the Undisputed WWE Championship vs. Sami Zayn
Drew McIntyre powerbombs Sami Zayn through an announce table, then Claymore Kicks him twice to retain his Undisputed WWE Championship
McIntyre survived his first major challenge as Undisputed WWE champion, beating the scrappy Sami Zayn. McIntyre appears headed to Allegiant Stadium with the title, looking to add another win to his WrestleMania record. Perhaps McIntyre’s actions in the men’s Royal Rumble have created his next challenger. McIntyre hit a Claymore Kick on Cody Rhodes as Rhodes was attempting to hold the ropes.
Rhodes lost his championship to McIntyre on “SmackDown” in early January and entered the Rumble match with the intent that he would have to win it to get another shot at the champion. Should Rhodes find another way to earn a title shot — perhaps at Elimination Chamber — he would be involved in a WWE Championship match for the fourth straight WrestleMania.
For Zayn, his path forward is much more unclear. At the moment, it appears he does not have a path to one of the major world championships and could contend in a multiman match for the United States Championship that he held last year. “SmackDown” has a crowded group of challengers, and Zayn could reinsert himself into the picture with many former rivals.
Gunther’s latest retirement victim is AJ Styles

Gunther prevails to end AJ Styles’ career
Gunther locks in a sleeper hold to defeat AJ Styles, with Styles retiring due to the loss.
Gunther retired his third legend in a row Saturday, adding AJ Styles to a list that includes Bill Goldberg and John Cena. Is the “Career Killer” targeting another legend?
Gunther finished as the runner-up in the men’s Royal Rumble match, and will most likely be headed to a featured match at WrestleMania — if not against Brock Lesnar, then perhaps with the “Legend Killer” Randy Orton. Gunther vs. Lesnar could be a possibility for SummerSlam in Minneapolis, where Lesnar attended college. If the career of the “Beast Incarnate” is winding down, Gunther is a strong candidate to face him in a retirement match this year.
On the other side of the ring, Styles’ WWE career appears over. Despite using his signature moves and trying to rely on his athleticism, Styles fought valiantly until he had nothing left, passing out to the same sleeper hold that retired Cena last December. After the match, the crowd showed its appreciation for Styles, who was distraught at the loss, and teased leaving his gloves in the ring. After some hesitation, the “Phenomenal One” pulled them back on and acknowledged the crowd.
Could that be a sign that we haven’t seen the last of Styles? If this was his last WWE match, then Styles has exceeded all expectations for his 10-year WWE run since his company debut at the 2016 Royal Rumble. If Styles finishes his in-ring career elsewhere, there are many dream matches left for a man who was an essential part of TNA, ROH and NJPW’s history.

I went from Wall Street to content creation: Here’s my journey
At 23, I walked into BlackRock‘s New York office fresh out of Wesleyan University, ready to conquer Wall Street. By 28, I had traded my corporate badge for a ring light and a mission to empower women through content creation. Along the way, I learned that the biggest impact doesn’t always come from the biggest institutions.
Aunt and cousin of Mexico’s education secretary “brutally murdered” in their home, he says
Authorities in the western Mexican state of Colima said they killed three people suspected in the shooting deaths of two family members of Mexico’s secretary of education on Saturday.
Colima, located on Mexico’s Pacific coast, is one of the country’s most violent states. It recorded the highest homicide rate in Mexico in 2023 and 2024, according to the US State Department.
The local prosecutor’s office said officers killed three suspects in the 4:30 am (1030 GMT) shooting of two women, whom Mexico’s Secretary of Public Education Mario Delgado later identified as his aunt and cousin.
They did not identify a motive in the shooting or say whether they were searching for other suspects.
“Deep shock, outrage, and sorrow over the events that occurred this morning in Colima, where my aunt Eugenia Delgado and my cousin Sheila were brutally murdered in their home,” Delgado wrote on X on Saturday.
“Throughout my entire childhood, my aunt Queña —as we affectionately called her— made my birthday cake every year. That was how she earned her living, working hard, selling delicious cakes and traditional Colima food prepared like only she knew how. She is now with my grandparents and with my father, her beloved brother,” he wrote on X.
Officials tracked the suspects’ vehicle to a Colima home on Saturday afternoon and killed three people in a gunfight, according to the prosecutor’s office.
Investigators found weapons and clothing in the suspects’ home linked to the double shooting.
Delgado was appointed education secretary by President Claudia Sheinbaum in 2024 and his profile photo on X shows both of them together. He previously served as national president of the ruling Morena party.

Last month, Sheinbaum said that efforts to crack down on Mexican cartels and slow migration north were showing “compelling results” in an effort to head off intervention talk by the Trump administration.
Her comments came after President Trump threatened action against Mexican drug cartels by U.S. forces last week. Mr. Trump told Fox News that the United States had “knocked out 97% of the drugs coming in by water” and that the U.S. was “going to start now hitting land, with regard to the cartels.”
