Bracketology: Iowa State moves up to a No. 1 seed, bumps UConn from top line

0

Iowa State supplanted UConn on Monday in the updated CBS Sports Bracketology model as the fourth No. 1 seed, bumping the 21-1 Huskies to a projected No. 2 seed on the heels of ISU’s fourth consecutive win over the weekend. The. Cyclones (20-2) and Huskies each have a 5-1 record in Quadrant 1 opportunities, and while the former ranks higher than the latter at KenPom, BartTorvik and the NET, the latter has a better Wins Above Bubble (WAB) metric — which is results-based and generated to quantify how many more or fewer wins a team compiled compared to what a bubble team would average against the same schedule — as well as a perfect 8-0 record vs. Quad 2 foes.

All that to say: the margin between ISU and UConn is obviously razor-thin. And the change coming after ISU’s 95-61 win on Sunday suggests it did well for the Cyclones particularly in the NET, which factors in scoring margin. It should be a tight race for the final couple spots on the No. 1 seed line all the way into March.

Two teams out of the Big Ten (Nebraska and Illinois) and one from the Big 12 (Houston) could have plenty of say about the top-seeded teams come tourney time, too. Illinois, which remained a projected No. 2 seed Monday, defeated Nebraska on Sunday, and has now won 11 straight dating back more than a month. The Illini have work to do to make a real push for a No. 1 seed but a Big Ten title could propel them there.

That is true of the Cornhuskers, too, who have a combined 11 wins vs. Quad 1 and 2 opponents — fewer than only five teams in the sport. Despite two consecutive losses, they are still 20-2 on the season, one game back in the Big Ten standings and in control of navigating to a No. 1 seed. Nebraska has only been seeded higher than a No. 6 once before — and that was 35 years ago when it was a No. 3 seed and bounced in the first round.

Bracketology top seeds

Illinois has eyes on a No. 1 seed

Illinois entered Sunday a projected No. 2 seed — and the No. 7 overall team — and ended the day as the top No. 2 seed (and No. 5 overall team) after its 78-69 road win over Nebraska. The Illini have won 11 straight since their 83-80 home loss to Nebraska on Dec. 13 and are tied atop the Big Ten regular-season standings with Michigan. Their scorching run the last month-plus has positioned them to potentially leap onto the No. 1 seed line should they keep their momentum rolling, which could give the Big Ten two No. 1 seeds this March if Michigan maintains its standing.

Florida jumps to No. 4 seed after thumping Alabama

Florida moved from a No. 5 seed to a No. 4 seed in CBS Sports’ Bracketology projections after its impressive 100-77 victory at home Sunday over Alabama. The Gators are No. 12 in the NET rankings and have won 11 of their last 13 games after a 5-4 start to the season.

Big stakes in the Big 12 on Monday

Kansas is up to the No. 12 overall team (the last No. 3 seed) in Monday’s updated projections — and positioned to continue rising Monday night. The Jayhawks go on the road to face Texas Tech, where the CBS Sports Bracketology model indicates a KU loss would bump it down to a No. 4 seed — while a Texas Tech win would bump it from a No. 5 to a No. 4 seed.

The Big 12 is represented well in Monday’s projections with seven teams inside the bracket. That is fourth among all conferences behind the SEC (11), Big Ten (10) and ACC (9), but it includes two No. 1 seeds (Arizona and Iowa State), a No. 2 seed (Houston) and a No. 3 seed (Kansas). BYU and Texas Tech (projected No. 5 seeds) and UCF (a projected No. 9 seed) round out the teams from the league currently in the 68-team field

Nearly 150,000 supplement bottles recalled due to child safety risks

0

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled nearly 150,000 bottles of the Ultimate Multivitamin+ dietary supplement made by Mindbodygreen because the packaging is not child-resistant. The recalled supplements were sold online between November 2021 and November 2025. Exact UPC and lot numbers are available on Mindbodygreen’s website. The Poisoning Prevention Packaging Act defines “child-resistant” packaging as packaging that is designed to be difficult for children less than 5 years old to open, but not difficult for adults to open. These design features may include push-and-turn or squeeze-and-turn mechanisms, blister packs, or align-to-open tabs.“This recall is strictly related to the packaging, not the supplement itself,” says Emma Engler, Scientific Affairs Manager at Mindbodygreen. “The Ultimate Multivitamin+ capsules and formula remain high quality and safe for intended adult use. There are no issues with the ingredients, potency, or product safety.”Why did the Consumer Product Safety Commission issue a recall? The multivitamin, which is meant for adults, poses an iron poisoning risk to small children if they were to swallow several capsules at once, according to Engler. “Each bottle of Ultimate Multivitamin+ has noted this warning since the product’s inception,” she says.Yes, our bodies need iron, but too much of it can cause serious injury or death. Symptoms of iron poisoning typically begin with abdominal pain, vomiting, or diarrhea, and can progress to liver failure. To date, no adverse events associated with this Mindbodygreen supplement’s packaging have been reported. What should I do if I bought the recalled supplement?Customers should store the recalled bottles out of sight and reach of children and obtain a child-resistant replacement cap from Mindbodygreen before continuing to use the supplement as directed, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. “We have reached out to our Ultimate Multivitamin+ customers and are providing free child-resistant replacement caps for any customers who request one,” Engler says. The new cap features a push-and-turn mechanism. While no poisonings have been reported thus far, customers should seek immediate medical attention if they believe their child may have ingested the supplement and and the child shows signs of iron poisoning.

Nine arraigned for deadly attack in Nigeria that killed over 150

0

ABUJA, Nigeria — Nine people accused of carrying out a deadly attack in north-central Nigeria were arraigned before a federal court on Monday, charged in connection with the deaths of more than 150 people.

The defendants are being charged with 57 counts of terrorism and could be sentenced to death or life imprisonment if convicted. They pleaded “not guilty” to the charges relating to the attack on Yelewata, a community in the Guma area of Nigeria’s Benue state, in June last year.

Presidential spokesperson Kamarudeen Ogundele said in a statement on Sunday that the Nigerian government undertook a “painstaking investigation and collaboration by government agencies.”

“The office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice wishes to assure Nigerians that Justice will be ensured in the matter to send a strong signal to the enemies of the country, acting under any disguise,” Ogundele said.

Nigeria is in the grip of a complex security crisis, with an insurgency by Islamic militants in the northeast alongside a surge in kidnappings for ransom by gunmen across the northwest and north-central regions over the recent months.

Attacks such as the one in Yelewata are common in Nigeria’s northern region, where local herders and farmers often clash over limited access to land and water. The prolonged conflict has become deadlier in recent years, with authorities and analysts warning that more herdsmen are taking up arms.

In December, the U.S. launched airstrikes in northern Nigeria, targeting fighters it claimed were from the Islamic State group, after allegations that the West African country failed to rein in attacks on Christians. Nigeria has recorded an uptick in attacks on churches in the north.

The U.S. has pledged to deliver military equipment purchased by Nigeria over the past five years but that has not yet arrived. The material, which includes drones, helicopters, platforms, spare parts and support systems, is intended to support the country’s efforts to rein in terror attacks.

Fantasy basketball pickups: Look to Ace Bailey, Ty Jerome

0

The NBA trade deadline is this Thursday, and if the right deals happen, the entire landscape of the league could shift.

We’ve already seen some smaller deals this weekend, but all eyes are on potential megadeals featuring superstars like Giannis Antetokounmpo or Ja Morant. If and when big deals happen, it’s not just the marquee players whose stats are affected. Trades can shake up teams after stars move on, and players that had smaller roles before suddenly have more opportunity to shine.

We’ll be doing wall-to-wall coverage of every trade that goes down, so follow us to keep up with players who may suddenly go from a bench role to a fantasy starter. For now, we’ll focus on the situations as they are and dig into the free agency wire to identify lightly rostered players that are ready to help your fantasy squads.

Point guard

Ty Jerome, PG, Memphis Grizzlies (rostered in 39.8% of ESPN leagues): Jerome made his debut with the Grizzlies on Saturday after having missed the first 46 games of the campaign with a calf injury. He got the start at point guard even though he was on a minutes restriction, scoring 20 points with six assists in only 19 minutes. With Morant sidelined, Jerome seems poised for a big role while sending Cam Spencer back to the bench.

Egor Demin, PG, Brooklyn Nets (29.5%): Demin continues to play well when on the court, and he set new career highs of 25 points and 10 rebounds on Friday. Demin needs to work on his consistency and his availability, but he has talent and as large of a role as he can handle with the rebuilding Nets.

Shooting guard

Ayo Dosunmu, SG, Chicago Bulls (31.2%): Dosunmu has scored in double figures in six straight games, averaging almost 20 PPG with a handful each of rebounds and assists in that span. He continues to play a major role for the Bulls, particularly with Josh Giddey dealing with injury.

Jaylon Tyson, SG/SF, Cleveland Cavaliers (33.8%): Tyson has been playing major minutes for the Cavaliers this season, particularly when any of the nominal starters have been injured. This weekend, the Cavaliers traded De’Andre Hunter to the Sacramento Kings which opens up more minutes at small forward for Tyson to maintain or increase his role even when his other teammates are healthy.

Small forward

Saddiq Bey, PF/SF, New Orleans Pelicans (50.3%): This is the last time Bey is likely to be in this space, because his strong play of late should have him rostered in well over half of leagues very soon. In his last six games, Bey has averaged 25.3 PPG, 7.3 RPG and 3.2 3PG as he has become one of the primary offensive options for the Pelicans.

Ace Bailey, SF, Utah Jazz (27.4%): Bailey entered the weekend having scored in double-figures in six straight games, averaging 18.0 PPG and 2.3 3PG in that span. He had a down scoring game on Sunday, but still made his mark with a career-high 11 rebounds. Bailey was widely considered one of the most talented rookies in this class, and he should get plenty of run in the second half of the season for the rebuilding Jazz.

Power forward

Kyle Kuzma, PF/SF, Milwaukee Bucks (26.0%): At least for now, Kuzma is the starting power forward for the Bucks with Giannis Antetokounmpo sidelined. If Giannis is in fact traded this could change, but while he holds the role Kuzma is an upper-teens scorer with double-double potential on a nightly basis. Kuzma also has 22 assists over his last four games, giving him a more well-rounded level of production.

Moussa Diabate, PF/C, Charlotte Hornets (24.2%): Diabate has settled in as an every game starter for the Hornets and is a nightly double-double threat. He has scored in double figures in six straight games, averaging 12.2 PPG and 9.5 RPG over that span while making more than 75% of his field goal attempts.

Center

Wendell Carter Jr., C, Orlando Magic (23.4%): Carter is a solid, lunch pail-type center. His season averages of 12.1 PPG and 7.3 RPG are representative, but he’ll also give you about a steal, a block and a 3-pointer a game and has occasional 20-plus point bursts to keep things interesting.

Yves Missi, C, New Orleans Pelicans (5.9%): Missi is a defensive role player at center that has leaned into that role of late. In his last four games, he has improved on his season-long defensive stats with 8.0 RPG and 2.5 BPG in 23.3 MPG.

It’s a great song, but fans are doing themselves a disservice if they don’t dig further. In fact, the very top song on this list is another — way underrated — track. Keep reading to see which one it is!
