49ers named Rams’ opponent for NFL’s 1st game in Australia

0

SAN FRANCISCO — The 49ers will be the Los Angeles Rams‘ opponent for the first NFL regular-season game in Melbourne, Australia, during the 2026 season.

The announcement was made Thursday by Australia Zoo’s Robert Irwin on “The Pat McAfee Show.”

The Rams were announced as the host team last February, but their opponent wasn’t revealed until Thursday. The date and time are still to be determined but the NFC West division rivals will play at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

The game, which is being played in partnership with the Victorian State Government and Visit Victoria, is part of what will be an NFL record nine international games scheduled for 2026.

“We are delighted that the San Francisco 49ers will take on the Los Angeles Rams,” Charlotte Offord, the NFL Australia and New Zealand general manager, said in a statement. “The 49ers are a popular franchise within the Australian market, and this rivalry game solidifies what we know is going to be an incredible experience for our fans down under.”

The Rams will serve as the home team for the game as they hold international marketing rights in Australia along with the Seattle Seahawks, Las Vegas Raiders and Philadelphia Eagles.

“Since we first secured marketing rights to the country in 2021 and more recently since the announcement of this game last year, we have seen tremendous excitement for our team from fans both in Australia and across the world,” Rams president Kevin Demoff said. “We look forward to spending this offseason continuing to deepen our connection with the Melbourne community leading up to the game this fall.”

The 49ers, meanwhile, could be in line to play not just one, but two, international games in 2026. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced Monday that the league is returning to Mexico City in December.

That’s one of the places the Niners hold international marketing rights, and they have not played there since the 2022 season, which was also the last game played in Mexico City. The game in 2026 will be played at newly renovated Estadio Banorte with the teams to be announced later.

San Francisco owner Jed York told Imagen Sports this week the Niners would “most likely” give up a home game this season to play an international game and that Mexico is “always No. 1 on my list.”

For now, they’re locked to head south to play the Rams in Australia.

“This is a terrific opportunity to continue to support the league in its mission to grow the game of football,” 49ers CEO Al Guido said. “We look forward to working with the NFL to benefit local Australian communities through sport.”

In addition to Australia and Mexico City, the NFL is also slated to have a game in Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Munich and Madrid along with three games in London in the 2026 season.

The teams playing, dates and times of the other games will be announced later this spring. The New Orleans Saints, however, were already announced as the host team for the game in Paris.

Morocco evacuates 140,000 people as torrential rains and dam releases trigger floods

0

RABAT, Morocco — More than 140,000 people were evacuated from their homes in northwestern Morocco as heavy rainfall and water releases from overfilled dams led to flooding, the Interior Ministry said. Stormy weather also disrupted maritime traffic between Morocco and Spain.

Torrential rains and water releases from overfilled dams raised water levels in recent days in rivers such as Loukkous, triggering floods in several towns, including Ksar El Kebir, according to residents and local media.

Authorities urged people in the affected areas to leave immediately and deployed the army to evacuate residents from the hardest-hit towns and set up temporary shelters.

The ministry said Thursday that 143,164 people had been evacuated. Schools and universities were closed. Officials said up to 85% of Ksar El Kebir was evacuated, leaving the town, known for its sugar production, nearly deserted.

Videos provided by a witness to The Associated Press showed damaged homes and landslides in the northern rural town of Bni Zid after torrential rains. Other footage showed bulldozers being used to clear roads and restore access to the isolated community.

Long-awaited after seven years of drought, the heavy rains brought relief to the North African nation, ending a dry spell and securing at least a year of drinking water by filling reservoirs. But it also overfilled some dams, damaged crops such as avocados, potatoes and olives, disrupted port operations and delayed shipments.

Morocco’s water ministry said it has launched controlled water releases from dams nearing maximum capacity, including the total discharge of more than 372 million cubic meters of water from the Oued Al Makhazine dam near Ksar El Kebir.

In the last six months, Morocco has recorded 150 millimeters of rainfall, surpassing the country’s average annual level by 32.5%. Morocco’s meteorology directorate described the climate conditions as “exceptional” and issued a red alert for upcoming heavy rainfall.

“Almost everyone left,” Ksar El Kebir resident Mohamed El Hachimi, who left the town to stay with family elsewhere, told the AP. He added that those without relatives in other towns sought refuge in shelters set up by the authorities.

“The fear now is from the dam, which has surpassed its maximum capacity … and the rain is still pouring heavily,” El Hachimi added.

Officials said the Oued Al Makhazine dam, which has a capacity of more than 672.8 million cubic meters, had exceeded that level by about 46%.

Rising water levels in the Sebou River have also forced partial road closures, flooded neighborhoods and halted train service, local media reported.

Luke Combs just put fans on baby watch. The singer pulled out of a Super Bowl weekend event in San Francisco because “family always comes first.”

Wife Nicole is expecting their third child, although neither have previously shared a due date.

Luke Combs Baby News!

After spotting the original post on EA Sports social media, we went to Luke and Nicole Combs personal Instagram pages to find a few clues.

The lineup change announcement says “with a new one on the way” but Luke isn’t as specific.

“So sorry to miss y’all at Madden Bowl, but family always comes first. Have a great time,” he writes on Stories.

Nicole is preparing to bottle feed a newborn. Her stories show a pair of pics of her favorite bottles. There’s nothing to indicate the baby has already arrived although she looks to be sanitizing them.

Luke Combs’ Wife and Kids

Luke Combs married Nicole Hocking on Aug. 1, 2020, after nearly five years of dating. They’ve since had two baby boys.

Son Tex Lawrence was born in June 2022 and Beau Lee came in Aug. 2023. The gender of Baby No. 3 is going to be a surprise to them and fans/family but he was bold enough to share a few names he liked.

“Without approval, if I was just wildcarding it, I love the name Flint,” he told Taste of Country last November. “It would probably be a middle name. It would be a weird first name, but I would love to sneak that in. I doubt that that’s gonna get approved.”

“For a girl name, I feel like I would go with something old-school — something like Olive,” he added. “My grandmother’s name was Donna. That’s not a common name either, but I think that would be kinda sick.”

As soon as Baby Flint or Olive arrives, we’ll add him/her to this list of country babies born or coming in 2026:

The calendar has flipped to February, which means, of course, that the madness of March is just around the corner. Less than six weeks stand between us and an official 68-team bracket for this year’s March Madness being unveiled on Selection Sunday before First Four and First Round action follow shortly thereafter.

It’ll be tourney time before you know it, so if you’re looking for the deets and dates — you’re in the right place. Grab that calendar so you can circle the dates below and request off work in advance. The NCAA Tournament always delivers the goods, but with so many great teams worthy of a championship, this year should be especially delightful.

Transfer portal dates

While you’ve got that calendar handy, here’s something else worth adding to the planner: The new transfer portal for both men’s and women’s basketball players will open for a 15-day period starting the day after the NCAA championship game. That means the men’s college basketball portal will open April 7.

Previous rules allowed for the portal to be open for 45 days in 2024 and was shortened to 30 days last year. The time to enter the portal was previously the day after Selection Sunday and amended last year for players to be eligible to enter it after the opening weekend of March Madness.

That led to a confluence of confusion among decision-makers, including as Matt Norlander noted last month: eventual champion UConn hosting virtual interviews on Zooms with transfer candidates while at the Final Four.

ALEX HONNOLD’s Taipei 101 Free Solo Was Soundtracked By TOOL & More: Inside His T101 Playlist

0

Last month, free solo star Alex Honnold stunned the world with a rope-free climb of Taipei 101 — a 101-story skyscraper in Taiwan — broadcast globally on Netflix. But beyond the sheer physical feat, Honnold also drew attention in the music world: he soundtracked the ascent himself, curating a playlist largely made up of Tool tracks.

Speaking to Variety, Honnold explained that his playlist wasn’t just motivational; it also helped him maintain a steady pace during the climb.

“It was mostly Tool. It’s a random playlist that I made, that I shared with production. I made it months ago while I was driving. I’ve been training to it a bunch. Basically, rock music that I’ve liked my whole life. Part of the appeal of music is that actually it helps me with pacing.

“Each bamboo box had been taking me about five to six and a half minutes. I just know how long the songs are. So it gives you a sense of if you’re going fast or slow. But in this case, it all kept cutting out anyway, and I couldn’t really hear and I was kind of like, ‘Whatever. I’m just doing my thing.'”

Honnold‘s “T101” playlist has since been shared online, and it does not skimp on Tool cuts. Opening with “Forty Six & 2” from the band’s multi-platinum sophomore album Ænima, the playlist also includes tracks from Fear Inoculum (“Invincible” & “Pneuma”) and four songs from Lateralus (“The Grudge”, “Lateralus”, “Schism”, “Parabola”).

Other notable selections highlight Honnold‘s taste for intense, rhythmically driven rock and metal:

  • Nothing More – six tracks featured
  • Linkin Park – “The Emptiness Machine” & “Papercut”
  • The Used – “Men Are All The Same” & “Hands And Faces”
  • Chevelle – “Rabbit Hole – Cowards, Pt. 1”
  • Senses Fail – “Choke On This”
  • The Offspring – “Session”
