Lindsey Vonn says “ride was worth the fall” after fourth surgery for broken leg, set to return to U.S.

0

American skier Lindsey Vonn announced Saturday that her latest surgery was successful, and that she has been cleared to return to the United States after breaking her left leg in a brutal crash last weekend during her opening downhill race at the Winter Olympics in Italy.

“Surgery went well today!” the 41-year-old Vonn wrote on social media. This marks her fourth surgery since the Feb. 8 crash.

Vonn had said Friday she would need at least two more surgeries — the one Saturday and a second after she returns to the U.S.

On Wednesday, Vonn disclosed she had already undergone three surgeries since experiencing the injury. She wrote Saturday that once she’s back in the U.S., she plans on giving “more updates and info about my injury.”

The Olympic veteran from Colorado also reflected on her crash, saying, “I don’t have regrets.”

“The ride was worth the fall. When I close my eyes at night I don’t have regrets and the love I have for skiing remains,” Vonn said in her post. “I am still looking forward to the moment when I can stand on the top of the mountain once more. And I will.”

Vonn crashed just seconds into the first run of her Olympic downhill race. She was competing despite rupturing her left ACL in a different crash during a World Cup race in the Swiss Alps last month.

“I was willing to risk and push and sacrifice for something I knew I was absolutely capable of doing,” Vonn said in the post. “I will always take the risk of crashing while giving it my all, rather than not ski to my potential and have regret.”

The three-time Olympic medalist had come out of retirement to compete in the Milan Cortina Games. After tearing her ACL, she had said she felt confident she could still race with the help of a knee brace.

“Please, don’t be sad,” Vonn said. “Empathy, love and support I welcome with an open heart, but please not sadness or sympathy. I hope instead it gives you strength to keep fighting, because that is what I am doing and that is what I will continue to do. Always.”

Canadian Olympic curler says he’s no cheat, attacks Sweden

0

CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy — The Canadian curler at the center of a spiraling controversy at the Winter Olympics insisted Saturday that he was not a cheat and postulated that his team might be the target of a “premeditated” attack by Sweden, one of its biggest rivals for the gold medal.

Marc Kennedy acknowledged he “probably could have handled it better” after launching an expletive-laden outburst toward Swedish curler Oskar Eriksson, who accused him of breaking rules by “double-touching” — essentially, touching the rock again after initially releasing it down the sheet of ice — during Canada’s 8-6 win in round-robin play late Friday.

However, Kennedy, 44, said he did not — and has never — deliberately taken to the ice “with the intention of getting an advantage through cheating.”

Footage circulating online appeared to show Kennedy breaching curling rules by touching the granite stone with his outstretched finger after he had already released it. Asked about the footage, Kennedy said: “Yes, I’m not even going there. I’ve never even known that to be a concern before. It’s never ever come up in conversation.”

“And if somebody said to you, ‘Hey, do you double-touch all the time?’ I honestly, in that split second of a moment, I couldn’t even tell you if I do or not,” he said.

He added his own theory, suggesting the whole thing might have been “premeditated planning to try to catch us.”

“They’ve come up with a plan to catch teams in the act,” Kennedy said.

The saga has rocked the usually sedate world of curling and involves two teams that play each other regularly outside the Olympics and have some of the best players in the game.

In another twist Saturday, the Canadian women’s team was accused by match officials of the same double-touch violation, this time by veteran skip Rachel Homan in the first end against Switzerland. The Canadian curlers looked incredulous and angry.

“Zero percent chance,” Homan said before the match continued.

Kennedy received a verbal warning from governing body World Curling a day after the feisty back-and-forth with the Swedish team. He has not been formally charged with cheating by World Curling, which does not use video to review game play.

The organization opted to deploy two officials to monitor how players released their stones during Saturday’s afternoon session in the men’s competition. In that session, Canada lost 9-5 to Switzerland and Sweden beat China 6-4.

Afterward, Eriksson said he “slept good, I’m not sure about him” — in reference to Kennedy — and said he chose that moment to call out Kennedy’s alleged rule-breaking because he’d seen it happen in the past. Eriksson said he has told officials in two previous events.

“We want to play a fair-and-square game, like you follow the rules,” Eriksson said. “And if we see something that’s not following the rules, we tell the opponents or the official. This time we did both.”

The allegations kept coming.

During its game against Canada, the Swiss men’s team alerted umpires midmatch to their suspicion that a member of the Canadian team was again double-tapping, Swiss coach Glenn Howard said.

Howard is Canadian, and a well-known and highly acclaimed curler himself.

“My whole career, you’d be like, ‘Ah, that’s OK,’ if there was a minor infraction,” said Howard, who said he didn’t know what to make of this latest flare-up.

In the early ends of Friday’s match, Sweden skip Niklas Edin notified officials of their complaints about Kennedy. An official then remained at the hog line — the thick green line before which curlers must release the stone — for three ends to monitor Canada’s curlers and no violations were recorded, World Curling said Saturday.

The online footage that appears to show Kennedy double-tapping the stone prompted some curling fans to question how the video was taken and point out that cameras are not usually stationed at the hog line.

A staffer for Swedish public broadcaster SVT said the channel had gotten the footage because it had moved its camera to the hog line after Sweden raised concerns about the double-tapping early in the match. The camera operator stayed there until he was able to capture Kennedy’s pitch in the eighth end. Eriksson said Swedish TV had showed him that footage.

At least 6,000 killed over 3 days during RSF attack on Sudan’s el-Fasher, UN says

0

CAIRO — More than 6,000 people were killed in over three days when a Sudanese paramilitary group unleashed “a wave of intense violence … shocking in its scale and brutality” in Sudan’s Darfur region in late October, according to the United Nations.

The Rapid Support Forces’ offensive to capture the city of el-Fasher included widespread atrocities that amount to war crimes and possible crimes against humanity, the U.N. Human Rights Office said in a report released on Friday.

“The wanton violations that were perpetrated by the RSF and allied Arab militia in the final offensive on el-Fasher underscore that persistent impunity fuels continued cycles of violence,” said U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.

The RSF and their allied Arab militias, known as Janjaweed, overran el-Fasher, the Sudanese army’s only remaining stronghold in Darfur, on Oct. 26 and rampaged through the city and its surroundings after more than 18 months of siege.

The 29-page U.N. report detailed a set of atrocities that ranged from mass killings and summary executions, sexual violence, abductions for ransom, torture and ill-treatment to detention and disappearances. In many cases, the attacks were ethnicity-motivated, it said.

The RSF did not respond to an e-mailed request for comment.

The paramilitaries’ Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo has previously acknowledged abuses by his fighters, but disputed the scale of atrocities.

The alleged atrocities in el-Fasher, the provincial capital of North Darfur, mirror a pattern of RSF conduct in its war against the Sudanese miliary. The war began in April 2023 when a power struggle between the two sides exploded into open fighting in the capital, Khartoum and elsewhere across the country.

The conflict created the world’s largest humanitarian crisis with parts of the country pushed into famine. It has also been marked by heinous atrocities which the International Criminal Court said it was investigating as war crimes and crimes against humanity. The RSF was also accused by the Biden administration of carrying out genocide in the ongoing war.

The U.N. Human Rights Office said it documented the killing of at least 4,400 people inside el-Fasher between Oct. 25 and Oct. 27, while more than 1,600 others were killed as they were trying to flee the RSF rampage. The report said it drew its toll from interviews with 140 victims and witnesses which were “are consistent with independent analysis of contemporaneous satellite imagery and video footage.”

In one case, RSF fighters opened fire from heavy weapons on a crowd of 1,000 people sheltering in the Rashid dormitory in el-Fasher university on Oct. 26, killing around 500 people, the report said. One witness was quoted as saying that he saw bodies thrown into the air, “like a scene out of a horror movie,” according to the report.

In another case, around 600 people, including 50 children, were executed on Oct. 26 while taking shelter in the university facilities, the report said.

The report, however, warned that the actual scale of the death toll of the week-long offensive in el-Fasher was “undoubtedly significantly higher.”

The toll does not include at least 460 people who were killed by the RSF on Oct. 28 when they stormed the Saudi Maternity hospital, according to the World Health Organization.

Around 300 people were also killed in RSF shelling and drone attacks between Oct. 23 and Oct. 24 in the Abu Shouk camp for displaced people, 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) northwest of el-Fasher, the U.N. Human Rights Office’ report said.

Sexual violence, including rape and gang rape, was apparently widespread during el-Fasher offensive, with RSF fighters and their allied militias targeting women and girls from the African Zaghawa non-Arab tribes over allegations of having links or supporting the miliary, the report said.

Türk, who visited Sudan last month, said survivors of sexual violence recounted testimonies that showed how the practice “was systematically used as a weapon of war.”

The paramilitaries also abducted many people while attempting to flee the city, before releasing them after paying ramson. Thousands have been held in at least 10 detention centers — including the city’s Children Hospital which was turned into a detention facility — run by the RSF in el-Fasher, the report said.

The U.N. Human Rights Office also said it documented 10 detention facilities used by the paramilitaries in el-Fasher, including the Children’s Hospital which was turned into a detention center. Several thousands of people remain missing and unaccounted for, the report said.

The pattern of the RSF offensive on el-Fasher was a mirror of other attacks by the paramilitaries and their allies on the Zamzam camp for displaced people, 15 kilometers (9 miles) south of the city, and on West Darfur’s city of Geneina and the nearby town of Ardamata in 2023, the U.N. Human Rights Office said.

Türk said there were “reasonable grounds” that RSF and their allied Arab militias committed war crimes, and that their acts also amount to crimes against humanity.

He called for holding those responsible — including commanders — accountable, warning that “persistent impunity fuels continued cycles of violence.”

2026 NBA Slam Dunk contest odds, participants, predictions: Picks from expert on 40-17 roll

0

There will be a new slam dunk champion as three-time winner Mac McClung won’t be taking part in the 2026 NBA All-Star Slam Dunk contest. Carter Bryant (Spurs), Jaxson Hayes (Lakers), Keshad Johnson (Heat) and Jase Richardson (Magic) compries the 2026 NBA Slam Dunk field. The dunk contest features a two-round format, with judges scoring each dunk. In Round 1, all four players will attempt two dunks, and the combined score will determine the top two who advance to the final round.  Each finalist will then attempt two more dunks, with the higher combined score determining the champion. The 2026 Slam Dunk contest will be the third and final event on All-Star Saturday Night, which begins at 5 p.m. ET and also includes the Shooting Stars and 3-Point Contest.

Bryant enters as the 2026 Slam Dunk contest favorite at +170 at FanDuel. He is followed by Jaxson Hayes (+240), Keshad Johnson (+310) and Jase Richardson (+430). Bryant’s over/under for first-round score is 94.5. Before making any 2026 Slam Dunk contest picks or All-Star weekend predictions, you need to see the picks and best bets from SportsLine’s NBA expert Mike Barner.

New users can target the DraftKings promo code, which offers $300 in bonus bets if your first $5+ bet wins:

Barner is one of the most respected voices in the industry, and his work has appeared in Sports Illustrated and on Yahoo, RotoWire and KFFL. He’s also been featured on ESPN Radio. Barner’s expertise has been on full display lately as he enters the All-Star break on an 40-17 run on NBA betting picks (+2014). Last year he finished by going 239-178-2, returning $3,209 to $100 bettors on against-the-spread NBA picks. Anyone following at sportsbooks and on betting apps could have seen huge returns.

Now he has analyzed the 2026 Slam Dunk contest from all angles and locked in his picks and predictions. You can head to SportsLine now to see Barner’s NBA Slam Dunk contest best bets.

Top 2026 NBA Slam Dunk contest picks, predictions

One shocker: Barner is fading Hayes. The 25-year-old Los Angeles Lakers center is a seven-year veteran, who has played in 43 games, including six starts, averages 6.5 points in 17.3 minutes per game. He is known for impressive highlight dunks. In a 129-118 win over the Chicago Bulls last month, he made a steal before racing to the other end for a between-the-legs dunk to end the game. It whipped the road crowd at the United Center in Chicago into a frenzy.

Barner, however, doesn’t like the fact that Hayes is tall. “Hayes is listed as 7-feet tall. Dwight Howard (6-11) and Larry Nance (6-10) are the only players at least 6-10 to win the award, so I’m eliminating Hayes from consideration,” Barner told SportsLine. Barner prefers another player over Hayes. You can see who to back here.
