Major League Baseball Players Association executive director Tony Clark resigned amid a federal investigation Tuesday, leaving the union without its longtime leader less than a year before the expiration of MLB’s collective bargaining agreement, sources told ESPN.
The resignation comes in the wake of the Eastern District of New York’s ongoing investigation into the finances and other dealings of the MLBPA, including questions about the use of OneTeam Partners, a multibillion-dollar group-licensing company part-owned by the union, and Players Way, a youth-baseball initiative that spent millions of dollars but offered only a handful of events, sources said.
Prosecutors are also investigating allegations of obstruction, sources said. A former NFLPA lawyer alleged Clark and Lloyd Howell, the former NFLPA executive director who later resigned, mounted “a pressure campaign to shut down a thorough review” of a proposed bonus plan that would have paid millions to OneTeam executive board members. The allegation was made by Heather McPhee, a top veteran NFLPA lawyer who was fired after filing a wrongful termination lawsuit against the union. McPhee is expected to testify before a federal grand jury in Brooklyn.
In the wake of the investigation, which was triggered by a whistleblower complaint filed against Clark with the National Labor Relations Board in November 2024 that alleged self-dealing, misuse of resources, abuse of power and nepotism, the MLBPA hired outside counsel to advise players on the status of the government’s case.
The lawyer, Adam Braverman, has kept the union’s eight-man executive subcommittee apprised of the government investigation and briefed top player leaders at the union’s board meeting in December about potential legal liabilities Clark posed, sources said.
Neither Braverman nor Clark’s attorney, Daniel Collins, returned messages left Tuesday by ESPN.
Clark’s resignation cast a pall over a negotiation already expected to be the most contentious in a generation, with owners’ expected push for a salary cap likely to prompt a lockout upon the current CBA’s Dec. 1 expiration.
Player leaders plan to meet at 4:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday to discuss the fallout of Clark’s resignation, sources said.
The process for naming his replacement is unclear, and the union’s constitution does not outline a succession plan. Bruce Meyer, the union’s deputy executive director, has been named by several player leaders as the most obvious candidate to take over, according to sources.
Brent Suter, a veteran relief pitcher and a subcommittee member, told reporters that the union is “going to have an interim (executive director) and keep everything as stable as we can this year.”
Clark, 53, was the first player to lead the MLBPA, voted in as executive director in 2013 after the death of predecessor Michael Weiner. Multiple times since then, players had considered changes in leadership at the union — including an attempted spring 2023 ouster of Meyer that Clark helped stop — but the investigation by the Eastern District, first reported by ESPN in May, led to questions that ultimately factored in Clark’s resignation.
The union, which was scheduled to start its spring training tour of all 30 clubhouses Tuesday, abruptly canceled its 8 a.m. ET meeting with the Cleveland Guardians in Goodyear, Arizona.
“This happening during the investigation is not overly surprising,” said New York Mets second baseman Marcus Semien, also a subcommittee member. “But it still hurts. It’s still something I’m processing and I just want our player group to move forward this year and be able to have a good year of negotiating with leadership that cares about what players want.
“The timing being February, when we’re looking forward to December when the CBA expires, is better than it happening in November if something came out.”
Clark joined the MLBPA following a 15-year player career and was seen as a potential successor to Weiner, who died in 2013 after battling brain cancer. Clark’s ascent was hailed by players, though following a CBA he negotiated in 2017 that was seen as an overwhelming win for the league, the union hired Meyer, a longtime labor lawyer who had worked with the NHL, NFL and NBA, as chief negotiator.
Chicago Cubs pitcher Jameson Taillon, a former player rep, said Tuesday that he was “surprised” by Clark’s resignation, adding that he didn’t think “any of us saw it coming.”
“The strength of the union isn’t one person,” Taillon said. “It’s about the players. It’s always been about that. I’m confident we’ll find someone good to lead us.”
Meyer shepherded the union’s return-to-play negotiations through the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic and was in charge at the bargaining table when the league locked out the players in 2021. Despite the subcommittee voting unanimously in March 2022 to reject the league’s final offer that would have led to games being missed, the rank-and-file players voted 26-4 in favor of the deal.
“With this group of players, we’ve been through a lot,” said Cubs outfielder Ian Happ, also a former player rep. “We’ve seen a ton. We’ve been through a lockout, we’ve been through 2020. That kept the players very informed and very aware. Having gone through those experiences will help in this one.”
The investigation into the MLBPA roiled the union, even as Clark denied wrongdoing and continued to do so months after government lawyers started asking questions about his tenure.
OneTeam Partners, an idea hatched by Clark and former NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith and launched in 2019, was valued at nearly $2 billion when one of the initial partners in the venture, RedBird Capital, sold its 40% stake in the business to three investors in 2022. As a group-licensing firm, OneTeam sought to strike media deals and monetize athletes’ name, image and likeness.
The bonus plan, which would have given so-called “profit units” to board members, was flagged by McPhee, the former NFLPA lawyer who was fired in late December. While the NFLPA launched an investigation following McPhee raising concerns, the MLBPA declined to do the same.
McPhee alleged in her lawsuit in December that Clark urged Howell to “shut down” the investigation asking questions about One Team’s executive bonus plan, which Clark would have earned millions of dollars in payments.
Players Way, one of Clark’s pet projects, initially aimed to hold events and showcases for youth baseball players and spent at least $3.9 million despite limited attendance. ESPN reported in October that federal investigators asked questions about the for-profit company, which listed a suite number at a Windermere, Fla. address that was actually a post office box at a UPS Store outside.
In a statement to ESPN, Clark said the union started Players Way “as an oasis for young athletes and families who too often get exploited in today’s billion-dollar ‘youth sports’ machinery.”
Although union officials insisted the organization would become far more active last October, Players Way, according to its website, currently has no events scheduled. Several sources have told ESPN that Players Way has been shut down, though union officials have declined to confirm that.

Trump administration strikes three more alleged drug boats in the Pacific and Caribbean
U.S. Southern Command announced that the military launched strikes on three alleged drug smuggling boats in the eastern Pacific and the Caribbean on Monday, killing 11 people.
“Intelligence confirmed the vessels were transiting along known narco-trafficking routes and were engaged in narco-trafficking operations,” Southern Command said Tuesday in a post to X.
The strikes are the latest in a series of controversial military operations that have alarmed and frustrated congressional critics of the administration, although lawmakers have opted to allow the strikes to continue without prior congressional approval.
In the latest announcement, U.S. Southern Command alleged the three boats were “operated by Designated Terrorist Organizations.” The post referred to those killed as “male narco-terrorists,” saying that eight people were killed on two boats in the eastern Pacific and three were killed on a boat in the Caribbean. No U.S. troops were harmed, the post said.
The post also said the strikes were conducted at the direction of Marine Corps Gen. Francis Donovan, who serves as the commander of U.S. Southern Command.
The military has not provided evidence that the boats or people onboard were involved in drug trafficking or proof of the number killed. NBC News has not independently verified the military’s claims.
The U.S. has launched more than 40 strikes that have killed more than 130 people, according to official estimates provided by the Defense Department.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth touted the strikes in a post on X, writing, “Turns out President’s Day — under President Trump — is not a good day to run drugs.”
The Trump administration has claimed the strikes are needed to stop the trafficking of drugs that are killing Americans, raising tensions between the U.S. and Venezuela — a major drug transit hub, the U.S. alleges.
Critics of the strikes have painted the administration’s actions as lawless and irresponsible, criticism that reached a crescendo after reports that the military struck one of the boats twice, ultimately killing two survivors.
In January, the U.S. launched a direct military attack on Venezuela, extraditing President Nicolás Maduro and his wife to face narcoterrorism and other charges in the U.S. The Maduros have pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Acting Venezuelan President Delcy Rodríguez has maintained that Maduro is still the legitimate leader of Venezuela. President Donald Trump told reporters on Monday that he believes Rodríguez “probably has to say that” for political reasons., adding that he thinks she is “doing a very good job.”

Sweden’s Urskog Records Launches With Debut EP From UNDULATHUND
Sweden’s underground psychedelic scene has a new home. Urskog Records officially launches with the self-titled debut EP from Malmö-based five-piece Undulathund, a three-track journey into groovy, kraut-infused psych-rock. The EP arrives on January 30, 2026, across multiple limited-edition vinyl variants, alongside a classic black pressing.
Built with patience and a clear sense of purpose, Urskog Records has been quietly shaping its vision: a label dedicated to international psychedelia, untamed sound, and deep listener engagement. The imprint seeks music with atmosphere, feral energy, and lasting impact while championing both overlooked gems and bold new artistic voices.
Undulathund‘s debut EP is an embodiment of this ethos. Recorded live on January 13, 2024, in a snowy industrial space, the band captured their improvisational alchemy in real time. “We have an idea of the form,” the band explains, “but the music comes to life in performance. Everyone brings their own state of mind to it, and that’s exactly what we hope it will do for our audience.”
The result is a rich, 38-minute exploration of groove-heavy stoner riffs, krauty psychedelia, elastic sax interludes, and moments of explosive chaos tempered with gentle restraint. Tracks shift seamlessly between cosmic expansiveness and grounded melodic grit, reflecting a playful, yet precise approach to composition. A single riff, nurtured across multiple songs, even inspired a brand-new track before being retired, demonstrating the band’s instinct-driven creative process.
Guitarist, saxophonist, and drummer interplay create an almost live, improvisatory energy, making the listener feel part of the band’s unfolding sonic experiment. “No one’s here to show off; everyone’s here to serve the song. Sometimes that means doing less. Sometimes it means going full freak out. It always has to feel natural,” the band says.
The name Undulathund — a quirky fusion of Swedish slang and nonsense roughly translating to “Lazy Parakeet Dog” — mirrors the band’s whimsical yet fiercely creative personality. Their music, like their moniker, is both delicate and feral, cosmic yet grounded, and kaleidoscopically explosive.

Belgium accuses U.S. ambassador of disinformation for claims of antisemitism over circumcision case
Belgium’s government summoned U.S. Ambassador Bill White for consultations on Tuesday after he accused the country of antisemitism, intervening in a case involving three Jewish religious figures suspected of carrying out traditional circumcisions without the medical training required in the country.
Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot called the American diplomat’s allegations “dangerous disinformation” and demanded that White respect Belgian institutions and the independence of the country’s courts, and added that personal attacks and interference broke diplomatic norms.
Belgian public broadcaster VRT reported that authorities were investigating three men in the city of Antwerp accused of performing circumcisions without medical training. Local authorities conducted searches of the three men’s homes in May, according to a statement from the Antwerp Police.
White, in a social media post on Monday, labelled the investigation antisemitic harassment and called on the country’s health minister to immediately “make a legal provision to allow Jewish religious MOHELS to perform their duties here in Belgium.”

A mohel is a Jewish religious official who performs traditional circumcisions, often without any formal medical training. The practice is not banned anywhere in the U.S., though some higher-risk aspects of the tradition have caused controversy in areas with large Orthodox Jewish communities.
“It’s done in all civilized counties [sic] as legal procedure. BELGIUM is a civilized country. Stop this unacceptable harassment of the Jewish community here in Antwerp and in Belgium,” White said in his post on X. “It’s 2026, you need to get into the 21st century and allow our brethren Jewish families in Belgium to legally execute their religious freedoms!”
“Any suggestion that Belgium is antisemitic is false, offensive, and unacceptable. Belgium condemns antisemitism with the greatest firmness. The fight against antisemitism, and all forms of hatred and discrimination, is an absolute priority for our country,” Prévot said in her own post on X. “Labeling Belgium as antisemitic is not just wrong, it’s dangerous disinformation that undermines the real fight against hatred.”
White shot back with another post, responding to Prévot that, “it’s not ok to simply say we ‘follow the law’ and ‘we are not antisemitic’. Both of those things can’t be true in this case.”
White said he would visit the three accused men in Antwerp, and he asked Belgium’s minister of health to join him.
Prévot said Belgian law “permits ritual circumcision when performed by a qualified physician under strict health and safety standards,” adding that he would not comment on an ongoing investigation.

Winds between 30 and 40 mph with gusts to 55 mph are possible in the metro area.
Strong winds could impact trees and power lines.
Blowing dust is also possible with lowered visibility.
Eastern New Mexico – High Wind Warning
A high wind warning has been issued for the eastern half of New Mexico through Tuesday evening.
Southwest and west winds between 35 and 45 mph are likely. Gusts up to 70 mph are expected.
Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines in eastern New Mexico with some power outages possible.
Travel will be difficult on highways with blowing dust possible along roadways.

Brad Paisley Wore a Country Icon’s Jacket at His Opry Induction
Most country singers have to wait years and years before they’re invited to join the Grand Ole Opry, if they ever get the nod at all. But when Brad Paisley was inducted into the Opry in February of 2001, he was just 28 years old and had only released one album.
Bill Anderson, Jeannie Seely and Little Jimmy Dickens surprised Paisley with an invitation to join the Opry live on stage on Dec. 16, 2000.
That was just a year-and-a-half after Paisley released his debut album, Who Needs Pictures, which yielded four singles, including two No. 1 hits in “He Didn’t Have to Be” and “We Danced.” Paisley made his Opry debut in May of 1999, and by the time he was invited to join, he had already played the venerated stage 36 times.
When Was Brad Paisley Inducted Into the Grand Ole Opry?
Paisley paid tribute to childhood hero Buck Owens at his induction on Feb. 17, 2001. He was inducted wearing the yellow jacket Owens wore when he recorded his iconic 1966 live Carnegie Hall Concert album.

Paisley performed his new single, “Two People Fell in Love,” from his sophomore album, Part II, which was not yet released.
The versatile singer-songwriter and guitarist received a glowing endorsement from George Jones, who wrote a letter that Steve Wariner read during Paisley’s induction.
“I am counting on you to carry on the tradition, and make folks sit up and listen to what good country music should sound like,” Jones wrote.
“Brad respects where we came from, the heritage,” Wariner commented. “We are in good hands with this guy.”
“I don’t feel worthy but I hope to earn it,” Paisley stated. “I’ll spend my career making this place proud they did this.”
