UCLA’s Mick Cronin ejects own player after foul in loss to MSU

0

UCLA suffered its second straight 20-plus-point defeat Tuesday night at No. 15 Michigan State, a game that saw Bruins coach Mick Cronin seemingly eject one of his own players.

With the Bruins trailing 77-50 and 4:26 left to play in the 82-59 loss, UCLA center Steven Jamerson II, a former Michigan State student, was called for a flagrant for fouling Carson Cooper from behind on a dunk attempt.

Cronin then sent Jamerson to the locker room.

“You know, true toughness is how you compete and how you go to work every day. Steve’s a good kid. He made a bad decision,” Cronin explained after the game. “But if you want to be a tough guy, you need to do it during the game, for a blockout, for a rebound.

“So, I was thoroughly disappointed; the guy was defenseless in the air. I know Steve was trying to block the shot, but the game’s a 25-point game. You don’t do that.”

The odd scene was a first for Spartans coach Tom Izzo, whose team improved to 21-5, 11-4 in the Big Ten.

“I guess he upgraded that to a flagrant 2, huh?” Izzo joked. “That’s the first time I saw a coach do it, but that sounds like Mick. So, he’ll get that straightened out.”

UCLA, coming off a 30-point defeat Saturday at top-ranked Michigan, has lost consecutive games by 20-plus points for the first time since the 1944-45 season, according to Sportradar. Coming into the weekend, the Bruins (17-9, 9-6 Big Ten) had won five of six.

Jamerson’s hard foul wasn’t the only development that had Cronin riled up Tuesday night.

During the game, Michigan State fans chanted the name of Bruins center Xavier Booker, a former five-star recruit who signed with Michigan State before transferring to UCLA in April after two underwhelming seasons in East Lansing. Booker logged two points and two rebounds in 25 minutes.

Cronin had a fiery postgame exchange with a reporter who asked about the Booker chants, saying, “I could give a rat’s ass about the other team’s student section.”

“I would like to give you a kudos for the worst question I’ve ever been asked,” Cronin said. “You really think I care about the other team’s student section?”

Cronin then accused the reporter of “raising your voice at me.”

“Yeah, you are,” Cronin said. “Everybody is standing here listening to you. Everybody. This is on camera. They can hear you. I answered the question. I can give a rat’s ass about the other team’s student section.”

ESPN’s Myron Medcalf and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

UK police forces assess allegations from Epstein files

0

LONDON — British police forces are working together to assess potential crimes revealed in documents from the U.S. Justice Department’s investigation into the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, including allegations of wrongdoing by the former Prince Andrew.

The National Police Chiefs’ Council, which brings together police leaders from across the U.K., said on Wednesday that it had set up a national coordination group to support forces looking into issues arising from the more than 3 million pages of documents released late last month.

“It may take some time due to the volume of material and the complexity of international jurisdictions, but policing and its law enforcement partners are taking this matter extremely seriously, and will assess all information thoroughly,” the council said in a statement.

While the council didn’t specify the police forces involved in the effort, at least eight have said they are “assessing” information in the files. They are looking into issues ranging from concerns that Epstein’s private jet may have been used in sex trafficking to allegations that the former Prince Andrew sent confidential reports to the financier when he was Britain’s international trade envoy.

Police in Surrey, the county bordering southeast London, on Wednesday said the documents contained allegations of sex trafficking in the village of Virginia Water between 1994 and 1996. The force didn’t provide any details about the alleged perpetrators or victims.

The force encouraged anyone with information about the alleged crimes to contact police.

“Where relevant, and via the national coordination group, we will engage with law enforcement agencies to obtain access to further information which may support our enquiries,” Surrey Police said in a statement.

The Epstein scandal has rocked the royal family and British politics in recent months because of his links to the former prince, now known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, and Peter Mandelson, the U.K.’s former ambassador to Washington.

King Charles III in October stripped his younger brother of his royal titles, including the right to be called a prince, in an effort to insulate the royal family from the continuing revelations about his friendship with Epstein.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer was criticized for poor judgment and faced a challenge to his leadership after the documents revealed Mandelson had a closer relationship with Epstein than he acknowledged at the time Starmer sent him to Washington.

CBB picks: Expert reveals best national semifinal futures bet, team to avoid

0

This week in our college basketball futures article, I’ll take a look at the national semifinal market. While a lot of people focus on who will win the championship, sometimes wagering on a team to reach the national semifinal round is the smarter bet.

One thing I look for in betting college basketball futures is teams peaking late in the season. Those big matchups in November are fun to watch but the reality is they don’t mean much come March. Here are a couple of teams I like in the national semifinal futures market and one to avoid. All odds are from FanDuel Sportsbook.

Best bet: UConn Huskies (+340)

Remember a couple of months ago when betting UConn to win it all was all the rage? After the Huskies fell to St. John’s though, there hasn’t been much talk about UConn with bettors now more enamored with other teams.

One reason I believe the Huskies are flying a bit under the radar is because they play in the weak Big East conference. UConn had a killer non-conference schedule, so wins over BYU, Illinois, Kansas, Florida, and Texas got people excited. However, the Huskies have played just one big game since Christmas and that was a 81-72 loss to the Red Storm.

I do believe playing in a weaker conference can hurt teams come NCAA Tournament time. That has been an issue for Gonzaga over the years. The difference is Danny Hurley has two titles and knows how to prepare his team in March.

The key metric to predict a college basketball champion is finding teams that rank top 20 in both offensive and defensive efficiency on KenPom. UConn is right on the cusp, ranking 22nd in offensive efficiency and 10th in defensive efficiency as of Feb. 18.

The Huskies also create a lot of turnovers and are a strong rebounding team. The only key metric I look at for the NCAA Tournament where UConn falls short is free throw shooting. The Huskies hit just 70% from the foul line, and that can be a factor in close games.

I came into the season thinking UConn was one of the top teams in the country and my opinion hasn’t changed. We are now at the buy point on the Huskies. There is good value backing UConn +340 to make the national semifinal and +1700 to win the title.

Back UConn to make the national semifinal at DraftKings, where new users can get $200 in bonus bets when they wager $5 or more and that bet wins:

Best value: Purdue Boilermakers (+600)

Purdue is coming off a blowout loss to Michigan at home, so it may feel like a weird time to back them in the futures market. Betting futures is about being objective and looking for a number. Michigan is better than Purdue and the odds-on favorite to win the title. However, in a one-and-done format like the NCAA Tournament, Purdue may not have to play Michigan to reach the national semifinal and even after the loss, I still believe the Boilermakers can be dangerous in March.

The thing I like about the Boilermakers is they are elite offensively and good enough defensively. Purdue ranks second in offensive efficiency and 27th in defensive efficiency. Compare that to a team like Alabama, who is also an elite offensive basketball team but ranks a distant 57th in defensive efficiency. The Tide’s defense simply isn’t good enough to win a title.

Purdue is a veteran team that rebounds, shoots well from the perimeter and doesn’t turn the ball over. Those are all qualities I look for in the NCAA Tournament. Another positive is the Boilermakers have played one of the toughest schedules in the country and been in a lot of close games. Stuff like that matters in March when a lot of games come down to the final few minutes.

Purdue has stumbled at times stepping up in class with losses at home to Iowa State, Illinois and Michigan. Still, I believe the Boilermakers have the ingredients to win a few games in the NCAA Tournament and make a national semifinal run if they draw a favorable bracket.

Bet on Purdue to be among the last four teams standing in the tournament at FanDuel, where new users can get $100 in bonus bets if their first wager of $5 or more wins:

Team to avoid: Alabama Crimson Tide (+1300)

The one championship futures bet I made before the season was Alabama at +4000. Both the Tide and Iowa State were sitting around that number and I was deciding which team to bet. I chose poorly.

Alabama has a puncher’s chance against anyone because of its offense. It’s tough to play a team that routinely scores 90+ points. The Tide have scored at least 88 points a ridiculous 19 times this season. But I have to question a team that scores 100 points and only beats an average Texas A&M squad by three. It’s hard to see a scenario where Alabama’s defense holds up if the Tide face Duke, UConn or one of the better teams in the Big Ten and Big 12.

The other thing that scares me about the Crimson Tide isn’t they don’t rebound well. Alabama is 0-10 in its last 10 games against Tennessee and Florida. Why? Because those two teams bully the Tide in the paint and dominate the offensive glass. Again, that doesn’t bode well in potential matchups against strong rebounding teams like Michigan, Houston, Duke and UConn in the NCAA Tournament.

Alabama is one of the most exciting teams in the country to watch and they have the talent to win a couple of games in the tournament. However, given the Tide’s defensive liabilities, making the second weekend feels like the ceiling for them this season.

FDA to review Moderna mRNA flu vaccine

0

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has reversed course and will review a new mRNA flu vaccine from Moderna, the pharmaceutical company said Wednesday.About two weeks ago, the FDA sent Moderna a letter in which it refused to accept the application to review its first mRNA seasonal flu vaccine — a rare move by the federal agency that raised concerns about another setback for the technology that’s been a target of some Trump administration health officials. The FDA told Moderna that its application didn’t contain an “adequate and well-controlled” trial because the control arm didn’t reflect the “best-available standard of care in the United States at the time of the study,” according to the letter that Moderna posted online. It didn’t identify any safety or efficacy concerns, the company said. But Moderna has since met with the FDA and “proposed a revised regulatory approach” with different pathways by age, according to a news release from the company.Moderna is now “seeking full approval for adults 50 to 64 years of age and accelerated approval for adults 65 and older, along with a post-marketing requirement to conduct an additional study in older adults,” the news release said.If the FDA approves the vaccine, it could be available for people ages 50 and older for the upcoming 2026-2027 flu season.Last week, Moderna said that the initial refusal from the FDA was inconsistent with previous feedback from the agency.“We appreciate the FDA’s engagement in a constructive Type A meeting and its agreement to advance our application for review,” Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel said in a statement. “Pending FDA approval, we look forward to making our flu vaccine available later this year so that America’s seniors have access to a new option to protect themselves against flu.”

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has reversed course and will review a new mRNA flu vaccine from Moderna, the pharmaceutical company said Wednesday.

About two weeks ago, the FDA sent Moderna a letter in which it refused to accept the application to review its first mRNA seasonal flu vaccine — a rare move by the federal agency that raised concerns about another setback for the technology that’s been a target of some Trump administration health officials.

The FDA told Moderna that its application didn’t contain an “adequate and well-controlled” trial because the control arm didn’t reflect the “best-available standard of care in the United States at the time of the study,” according to the letter that Moderna posted online. Jelly Roll Admits Parts of Bunnie’s Book Were ‘Rough’ to Read

0

Jelly Roll says that parts of his wife Bunnie Xo‘s new book were painful to read, but he’s proud of her for being so “brave” in telling her story.

“It was rough at times just for me to read it. You know what I mean?” the singer admits to People. “We went through a lot of pain and having to go through it together, but reading the whole book and seeing where it ended at is really touching.”

Read More: Bunnie Xo’s Book: 8 Bombshell Revelations From ‘Stripped Down’

Stripped Down: Unfiltered and Unapologetic, which released this week, presents readers with a full timeline of Bunnie’s life. It documents the abuse she suffered in childhood, the horrific physical violence she endured at the hands of various romantic partners, her friendships and her work in the sex industry.

Of course, it also talks about her love story with Jelly, and their process of obtaining custody of Jelly’s then-7-year-old daughter Bailee.

What Did Bunnie Xo Say About Jelly Roll in Her Book?

All things considered, Jelly comes off as a pretty sympathetic character in Bunnie’s book. When she met him, he quickly became the most caring and loving boyfriend she’d ever had.

But her narrative doesn’t gloss over the hard parts of their relationship, either.

Specifically, one chapter is dedicated to the long-awaited full story of Jelly’s affair. The couple had talked about that time in bits and pieces before, but Bunnie gave a blow-by-blow of how it happened: Including the fact that Jelly continuously lied to her about his cheating and who it was with, and how she ultimately only got confirmation of the affair from another singer’s wife.

Those passages were undoubtedly difficult for Jelly to read.

Another hard part of their relationship, which came as more of a surprise to readers, was her retelling of the time when they’d finally gotten custody of Bailee. When the reality sunk in of suddenly being responsible for a malnourished, abused child, Bunnie briefly freaked out and abandoned the family.

“Sitting there with that sick baby and her father, I started to feel closed in,” she writes in that section, admitting that this part of the story “brings me to tears.”

She took off and drove from Nashville back to Las Vegas, despite Jelly’s pleading text message asking her to stay.

Another portion of the book also recounts the unexpected death of Jelly’s best friend, Chizzle, in 2020.

Jelly Roll Couldn’t Be Prouder of Bunnie Xo For Writing Her Book

Of course, most of Bunnie’s book is about her life before she met Jelly Roll. She’d already endured a lot of pain, trauma and growth by the time they got together.

Read More: Bunnie Xo Addresses Rumors About Her Marriage to Jelly Roll

The book shares new (and often, very painful) revelations about her childhood, including how her mother abandoned her on a stranger’s doorstep at 3 months old, and how her stepmom’s teenage sister abused her by forcing her to drink wine and watch pornographic movies when she was just a little kid.

Those sections, along with her longtime battles with drugs and terrifying experiences with partner violence and sexual abuse, would be difficult for anyone — especially someone who loves Bunnie like Jelly does — to read.

Still, the singer says he’s proud of Bunnie for writing the story of her life, which is ultimately a gritty, inspiring redemption narrative.

“I’m just proud of her for telling her story so unapologetically,” Jelly explains. “I mean, she talks about everything fearlessly, from domestic violence to sexual assault. She’s so brave.”

Stripped Down: Unfiltered and Unapologetic is out now.

8 Bombshell Revelations We Learned From Bunnie Xo’s Book

Bunnie Xo’s memoir, ‘Stripped Down: Unfiltered and Unapologetic,’ lays out a full timeline of her life and answers burning questions that fans have been asking for years. Below, we’ve rounded up the most shocking anecdotes and revelations from the book. Consider this your spoiler alert!
