Grades, questions from USA’s Olympic hockey win vs. Sweden

0

Two of the first three quarterfinal games of the 2026 Olympic men’s hockey tournament went to overtime — so should hockey fans be surprised that the game between the United States and Sweden did as well?

In the first tournament featuring active NHL players since the 2014 Sochi Games, Team USA entered the event with the second best gold medal odds, behind Canada.

The team in third? Sweden. And Tre Kronor proved a worthy opponent in this contest, scoring a tying goal with 1:31 remaining in the third period, before Quinn Hughes scored the OT game-winner.

What did we learn about Team USA in this challenging outing? Which players stood out the most — and what big questions persist as the team prepares for Slovakia in the semifinals?

Takeaway 1: Quinn Hughes may be Team USA’s most important skater

Scoring a game-winning goal in 3-on-3 overtime to advance to the semifinal round is the singular act that is going to receive attention. But Hughes’ performance in his team’s latest victory over Sweden affirms the fact that he might be the most crucial skater on Team USA.

Hughes entered Wednesday as the only skater on the American roster who has logged more than 20 minutes in every game. He’s playing against the opponents’ top lines. He’s controlling the pace of the game in ways that can exhaust an opponent, while allowing the U.S. to find more openings on net.

This was all on display against Sweden. He logged more than 27 minutes and averaged 56 seconds per shift. That was the most of any American player, and it was three seconds more than what Sweden’s Erik Karlsson had on his average shift.

That’s what made his overtime goal even more emphatic. Hughes was on the ice for the final one minute, 15 seconds. He made the sort of moves that forced Sweden center Joel Eriksson Ek, his teammate with the Minnesota Wild, to concentrate as he was closing in on net. Then came the moment when Hughes found the space and launched the shot that sent the U.S. to the semifinals.

Takeaway 2: Was Team USA a bit too conservative in the third period?

We’ll touch on Team USA’s overall defensive performance here shortly. But what made the U.S. more conservative in the third compared to how it performed in the second period when it was consistently generating scoring chances?

It’s worth acknowledging that the U.S. entered Wednesday with a plus-7 scoring margin in the second period. Dylan Larkin‘s goal pushed it to a plus-8 margin as part of a period that saw them establish consistency. Larkin’s redirected salvo was part of this push that saw the U.S. gradually get chances at the net front against Sweden. Seeing how they were able to attack the net created the belief that it could be more of the same in the third period.

And yet, Team USA went from finishing with 20 shots in total throughout the second period to having just four shots in the third period. It initially appeared that the U.S. were going to come out of the quarterfinal with the round’s first shutout, before Mika Zibanejad scored with 91 seconds left to force overtime.

On overtime, the U.S. finished with more shots — five — in a frame that barely went 90 seconds compared to the amount it had throughout the entirety of the third period.

Takeaway 3: Was this the strongest defensive performance of the men’s tournament?

The momentum really started with Charlie McAvoy delivering a hit on Gabriel Landeskog. The next step was to deny Sweden a shot on goal for the first six minutes. Even when the Swedes did record a shot, it was an offering from distance that Connor Hellebuyck turned aside with his blocker.

Everything Hughes and McAvoy did in the defensive end was supplemented by efforts from Brock Faber, Jake Sanderson, Jaccob Slavin and Zach Werenski, with Noah Hanifin filling in as the seventh defensemen when needed. U.S. forward J.T. Miller gave up his body on numerous occasions to block shots, while the penalty kill remained the only perfect unit in the men’s tournament — it has not allowed a power-play goal in 10 attempts.

And of course, it helps having Hellebuyck, who made 27 saves.

Having that sort of consistency on a day that saw Germany allow six goals, Canada overcome defensive breakdowns to win in overtime over Czechia and Switzerland lose in overtime after having a two-goal lead against Finland only adds to why the Americans are going to the next round coming off of a superb defensive effort.

We’ve covered quite a bit of what made the oldest Hughes brother such an important player for Team USA in the grand scheme.

But when it came to the scope of what he did against Sweden? Those are all the items that make Hughes one of the best defensemen — and one of the best players regardless of position — in the world.

He was crucial to their defensive effort, he had an assist on his team’s first goal, was on the ice more than any skater and scored the game-winning goal in overtime.

Big question for the semis

What lessons can be applied against Slovakia? Team USA had its strongest defensive performance of the tournament, but will now face an offensive juggernaut.

Slovakia exploded for six goals against Germany in a continuation of what it has done at the Olympics in general. The defending bronze medalists are fourth in goals per game. That includes scoring four against Finland and putting up three goals in a loss to Sweden in the opening round.

Replicating much, if not all of what they did against Sweden could make the difference between Team USA playing for gold or bronze.

Overall team grade: B+

The four shots registered in the third period is the only thing preventing the U.S. from getting a higher grade here. Even though the Americans scored just one goal in the second period, that frame appeared to provide them with an opening to grab more goals before the Swedes forced overtime with a late game-tying goal.

Still, Team USA’s defensive performance is the sort that set a blueprint for continuing to advance to play for a gold medal.

Trump has discussed timeline for Iran strikes — including as soon as this weekend — but no decision yet

0

Washington — Top national security officials have told President Trump the military is ready for potential strikes on Iran as soon as Saturday, but the timeline for any action is likely to extend beyond this weekend, sources familiar with the discussions told CBS News.

Mr. Trump has not yet made a final decision about whether to strike, said the officials, who spoke under condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive national matters.

The conversations have been described as fluid and ongoing, as the White House weighs the risks of escalation and the political and military consequences of restraint.

Over the next three days, the Pentagon is moving some personnel temporarily out of the Middle East region — primarily to Europe or back to the United States — ahead of potential action or counterattacks by Iran if the U.S. were to move ahead with its operation, according to multiple officials.

It’s standard practice for the Pentagon to shift assets and personnel ahead of a potential U.S. military activity and doesn’t necessarily signal an attack on Iran is imminent, one of the sources said.

Contacted by CBS News on Wednesday afternoon, a Pentagon spokesperson said they had no information to provide.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio plans to visit Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in about two weeks for further discussions, according to one of the sources.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said at a White House briefing Wednesday there are “many reasons and arguments that one could make for a strike against Iran” but diplomacy is always the president’s first option. She declined to discuss whether a potential strike would be coordinated with Israel.

Leavitt told reporters the administration had “a very successful operation in June that targeted Iran’s nuclear facilities.”

“Iran would be very wise to make a deal with President Trump and with his administration,” she said.

The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier group and its flotilla of warships is already in the region and a second carrier group, the USS Gerald Ford, was en route to the Middle East.

As of Wednesday, the Ford was off the coast of West Africa, according to maritime vessel tracking data.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Tuesday posted an AI-generated photo of the Ford at the bottom of the ocean.

“The US President constantly says that the US has sent a warship toward Iran. Of course, a warship is a dangerous piece of military hardware,” read Khamenei’s post on X. “However, more dangerous than that warship is the weapon that can send that warship to the bottom of the sea.”

Iranian and American negotiators held mediated talks Tuesday on Iran’s nuclear program. The discussions in Geneva, Switzerland, lasted several hours.

The Trump administration said some progress has been made, but on Wednesday Leavitt said, “We’re still very far apart on some issues.”

“I believe the Iranians are expected to come back to us with some more detail in the next couple of weeks, and so the president will continue to watch how this plays out,” she said.

No date has been set for follow-up consultations.

Mr. Trump told Netanyahu during a meeting at Mar-a-Lago in December that the president would support Israeli strikes on Iran’s ballistic missile program if a deal between Washington and Tehran could not be reached, two sources said.

Iran warned pilots Wednesday to avoid the southern region of Iran on Thursday, due to rocket launches.

Last June, the U.S. joined Israel in strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities during its 12-day war with Iran, causing what intelligence suggested was severe damage to the regime’s nuclear program.

Before the war, Iran had ramped up its enrichment program in the wake of the U.S. withdrawal from the 2014 nuclear deal. It had started enriching uranium up to 60% purity, a short technical step away from weapons-grade levels, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency, which said Iran was the only country in the world to enrich to that level that was not armed with a nuclear bomb.

California avalanche is the deadliest in 45 years

California avalanche is the deadliest in 45 years

FACT THAT THE AVALANCHE DANGER IS STILL VERY HIGH. NOW, EARLIER IN THE DAY, THE SIERRA AVALANCHE CENTER ISSUED AN AVALANCHE WARNING FOR PARTS OF THE AREA. THAT WARNING LASTS UNTIL TOMORROW MORNING. SO WE WANT TO BRING IN KCRA 3’S BRIAN HICKEY. BRIAN, I KNOW YOU HAVE A LOT OF EXPERIENCE IN BACKCOUNTRY SKIING. YOU’VE BEEN BACKCOUNTRY SKIING IN THIS PARTICULAR AREA BEFORE. WHAT CHALLENGES ARE CREWS FACING RIGHT NOW AS THEY CONTINUE THIS EFFORT? YEAH, I’VE DONE A LOT OF BACKCOUNTRY SKIING ON CASTLE PEAK, BUT I’VE NOT BEEN BACK TO FROG LAKE, WHICH IS WHERE THESE HUTS EXIST. AND THIS AVALANCHE IS REPORTED IN THE AREA OF FROG LAKE. I DO KNOW FROM RESEARCH, BECAUSE ONE DAY I WOULD LIKE TO VISIT THOSE HUTS. THERE’S A VERY STEEP SADDLE ONE MUST PASS THROUGH FROM CASTLE PEAK DOWN TO FROG LAKE, AND BACK OUT AGAIN TO VISIT THOSE HUTS. IF THAT’S THE ROUTE YOU CHOOSE TO GO IN THERE. AND THAT WOULD CERTAINLY BE AVALANCHE TERRAIN. AND SO GIVEN WHERE THIS IS CURRENTLY REPORTED, THAT APPEARS TO BE THE SITUATION WHERE THERE IS SOME VERY STEEP TERRAIN THERE, AVALANCHE PRONE TERRAIN AND OBVIOUSLY THE CONDITIONS, AS YOU CAN WELL SEE IN MY LIVE SHOT RIGHT NOW, NOW WE’RE AT PALISADES TAHOE. TO BE CLEAR, THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS SLIDE, BUT I WANT TO USE THIS AS AN EXAMPLE. YOU CAN SEE BEHIND US MOMENTS AGO WE COULD NOT EVEN SEE RED DOG FACE, WHICH IS A PROMINENT RUN RIGHT HERE AT THE BASE OF PALISADES TAHOE. AND I POINT THIS OUT BECAUSE IN THESE CONDITIONS, THIS LIMITED VISIBILITY, IT IS VERY EASY TO FIND YOURSELF AT THE BASE OF A HAZARD THAT YOU CAN’T EVEN SEE. THERE COULD HAVE BEEN A STEEP SLOPE ABOVE THEM. IT’S EASY TO GET TURNED AROUND IN THOSE CONDITIONS. AND SO THESE ARE ALL FACTORS THAT NOT ONLY A GROUP TRYING TO NAVIGATE THROUGH THAT AREA WOULD HAVE TO DEAL WITH, BUT ALSO RESCUERS WHO ARE GOING THERE AND TRYING TO AFFECT A RESCUE. THEY TOO ARE DEALING WITH THESE VERY SAME CONDITIONS. OF COURSE, THEY’RE GOING TO BRING ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT WITH THEM, ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE. THEY VISIT THESE AREAS ROUTINELY, ESPECIALLY AREAS LIKE THE FROG LAKE HUTS, THE PETER GRUBHUB OFF THE BACKSIDE OF CASTLE PEAK, AND OTHER AREAS THAT ARE POPULAR AMONG SNOWSHOERS AND BACKCOUNTRY TRAVELERS WHERE TIMES, YOU KNOW, BY PROBABILITY, SOMEBODY’S GOING TO GET LOST. AND SO THEY ARE FAMILIAR WITH THESE AREAS. THERE’S MULTIPLE TEAMS HEADING IN RIGHT NOW. TWO SNOWCATS THE LAST I HEARD, A COUPLE OF SNOWMOBILES AND THEN ALSO SKIERS ON FOOT THAT ARE APPROACHING FROM SEVERAL DIFFERENT ANGLES TO TRY TO GET IN THERE. NOW, THIS HAPPENED AT 1130. WE’RE NOW IN THE 5:00 HOUR. AND IF THERE ARE SOME BURIALS, THERE ARE A NUMBER OF UNACCOUNTED SKIERS RIGHT NOW UNACCOUNTED FOR SKIERS. THAT IS A LONG TIME TO BE EXPOSED, WHETHER EITHER TRAPPED OR FULL BURIAL IN SNOW. WE’RE JUST HOPING FOR THE SAFETY OF THE THE LOST. AND ALSO THOSE THAT ARE GOING IN TO TRY TO EFFECT A RESCUE IN THE CONDITIONS THAT ARE AROUND US RIGHT NOW. SEND IT BACK TO YOU GUYS. YEAH.

Rashee Rice accused of domestic violence by ex-girlfriend in civil lawsuit

0

Following domestic violence allegations she made last month, a former girlfriend of Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice this week filed a lawsuit against Rice, accusing him of physical assault. Dacoda Jones, the mother of Rice’s two children, filed the civil suit in Dallas County (Texas) District Court and seeks $1 million in damages.

Jones said in the lawsuit, filed on Monday, that Rice assaulted her over the course of many months from December 2023 through July 2025 and caused severe and permanent injuries.

The lawsuit states that Rice strangled Jones at their shared home in Victory Park, Texas, in December 2023 and continued to assault her over the course of their relationship. Many of his alleged acts occurred while Jones was pregnant. In addition to the physical assault, Rice is also accused of abusive behaviors including throwing objects, destroying property and locking Jones out of their home in the middle of the night.

Rice responded to the lawsuit via his legal representation.

“On October 9th, 2025, well after the parties’ relationship had ended, Ms. Jones stated under penalty of perjury in a sworn Affidavit for Non-Prosecution that ‘Mr. Rice and I had a verbal argument, but he did not punch me.’ We will allow the legal process to run its course and have no further comment at this time,” Rice’s attorney, Sean Lindsey, said in a statement to ESPN.

The Chiefs also issued a statement after the lawsuit was filed.

“The club is aware and remains in communication with the National Football League,” the team said.

Jones did not refer to Rice by name when she brought forth the domestic violence allegations in January. She posted photos to Instagram of herself with a bloody lip and scratches and bruises on her face and body. She accused an unnamed partner of physical abuse, said the couple broke up in late 2025 and mentioned that the former partner locked her outside in freezing weather.

“I’m so tired of keeping quiet I’m so tired of protecting his image,” Jones said in the since-deleted social media post. “I’ve been through enough in the span of 8 years and I’ve had ENOUGH! I’ve dealt with abuse for years, me and this man decided to break up a couple months ago and it’s been nothing but hell.

“He literally left us in Kansas and I had to beg him to send money so that I could drive to Texas with my kids and all our stuff. We have an agreement because of everything he’s put me through and he still doesn’t follow it. He’s now trying to remove me and my kids from our home for no apparent reason. I’ve known this man for YEARS. He tries to put on this persona like he’s dad of the year. He does the bare minimum and I have to beg for that. I’ve protected his image too long and I’m done doing that. It’s time to protect my peace, protect my children and stand up for myself.”

Off-the-field storylines have now followed Rice in each of the last three offseasons. Last summer, the NFL suspended him for the first six games of the 2025 campaign for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. The suspension was a result of a traffic incident that occurred in March 2024. Rice pleaded guilty to two felony charges in a hit-and-run and was sentenced to 30 days of jail time and five years of probation.

Rice hauled in 53 catches for 571 yards and five touchdowns across eight games last season after serving his suspension. The former second-round NFL Draft pick is entering the final year of his rookie contract with Kansas City.

Ghana and Kenya investigate presumed Russian national for secretly recording sexual encounters

0

ACCRA, Ghana — Ghana has launched an investigation into a man believed to be Russian who is accused of secretly recording sexual encounters with several women and publishing them online without their consent, authorities said Wednesday, in a case that sparked public outrage.

Samuel Nartey George, Ghana’s minister for communications, told a news conference in Accra on Wednesday that the government has taken steps to trace and secure relevant digital and financial evidence linked to publication of the intimate footage.

Kenyan media previously has reported on viral videos that allegedly show Kenyan victims as well.

Kenya’s gender minister condemned the secret filming of women by the Russian man on Monday, saying the act would be investigated in collaboration with international authorities. The minister, Hanna Wendot Cheptumo, said the actions were a form of exploitation and urged affected women to seek support through a toll-free helpline number.

Authorities in both Ghana and Kenya have said that the Russian national was allegedly recording and sharing the explicit content on social media platforms without the consent of the women in violation of the law.

Ghana’s Gender Ministry has said it is working with police on the case, including exploring cross-border cooperation to track down the suspect, who is believed to currently be outside of Ghana. The suspect’s actions have infringed on the “privacy and dignity of the victims,” Ghana authorities said.

Separately, Ghana’s Foreign Ministry said it called in Russian Ambassador Sergei Berdnikov on Tuesday to formally convey the government’s “strong displeasure” over what it described as the “atrocious conduct” of the individual, which it said “clearly violates Ghanaian law,” and to seek Russia’s cooperation in pursuing justice.

According to the statement, Berdnikov acknowledged “the violation of the privacy and dignity of the victims, and the larger cybercrime dimensions,” and expressed Russia’s willingness to cooperate with Ghanaian authorities.

However, the ambassador indicated he was unable to confirm the suspect’s Russian nationality and said the purported name circulating in the media was not a known Russian name, but rather “an inappropriate or vulgar expression in the Russian language.”

The case has triggered widespread debate on Ghanaian social media, with calls for accountability and stronger protections against digital sexual exploitation.

Authorities say psychosocial and legal support for victims is being coordinated through confidential channels, including toll-free helplines for abuse survivors.

SUN DONT SHINE (TYPE O NEGATIVE, CROWBAR, Etc.) Return With New Single “Power To Live”

0

Heavy metal supergroup Sun Dont Shine return with their fierce new single, “Power To Live,” available now via Corpse Paint Records. An official music video, directed by Mike Holderbeast, will follow on February 23 across major streaming platforms.

The track serves as the latest preview of the band’s anticipated debut full-length, From Birth To Death, arriving April 1, 2026. Written by Kenny Hickey and Kirk Windstein, “Power To Live” was recorded at OCD Studios in summer 2025. Production was handled by Duane Simoneaux, co-produced by Vinnie LaBella, and executive produced by Andrew Spaulding.

Lyrically, the song confronts humanity’s repeated cycles of violence while defiantly asserting resilience and awareness. The concept originated from a conversation between Hickey and Windstein about the single’s cover art and the shame of mankind’s failure to evolve beyond destruction. As the band explains, the track is “a challenge to the times we’re living in — an insistence on survival and consciousness in the face of cycles that refuse to break.”

Visually, Sun Dont Shine collaborated with artist Nadiya Vizier (Crowbar, Sailor Bob Tattoo) on the striking cover artwork. To celebrate the release, the band and Vizier have created a strictly limited art collection tied exclusively to the single. The collection includes 100 hand-signed posters, a custom sticker sheet, and 10 ultra-limited trucker caps featuring original artwork. Each item was produced specifically for “Power To Live” and will not be reissued.

Musically, the track showcases the band’s signature blend of crushing heaviness and brooding atmosphere. Windstein‘s massive guitar tone locks in with Hickey‘s haunting hooks, while Johnny Kelly delivers precise yet explosive drumming and Todd Strange anchors the low end with thunderous weight. The result is a dynamic, battle-worn sound that feels both raw and deliberate.
