Two Georgia football players charged with speeding at max limits

Georgia linebackers Chris Cole and Darren Ikinnagbon were arrested Wednesday night on misdemeanor charges of speeding at maximum limits and other traffic-related charges.

Along with the speeding charge, Athens-Clarke County police charged Cole with misdemeanor reckless driving. He was released on a $26 bond. Ikinnagbon was charged with speeding, reckless driving and following too closely, all misdemeanors. He was released on a $39 bond.

“We are aware of the charges and are actively gathering additional information,” UGA deputy athletic director Steven Drummond said in a statement. “As this is an ongoing legal matter, we will not be providing further comment at this time.”

Cole, a junior from Salem, Virginia, played in 13 games with one start in 2025. He had 59 tackles, seven tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. He is expected to be one of the Bulldogs’ top defenders this coming season.

Ikinnagbon, a redshirt freshman from Hillside, New Jersey, played in five games this past season and had two tackles.

The Bulldogs have endured a string of traffic-related arrests in recent years.

On Nov. 23, Georgia backup offensive lineman Nyier Daniels and his mother were arrested in Commerce, Georgia, after a traffic incident.

Daniels is facing 17 criminal charges, including two felonies, after he allegedly attempted to flee from police at speeds in excess of 150 mph with his two younger siblings in the car. The redshirt freshman from Newark, New Jersey, faces two felony counts of fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, according to online court records.

He also was charged with two misdemeanor counts of second-degree cruelty to children. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

His mother, Brandi Canada-Green, faces a felony count of fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer and other misdemeanor traffic-related charges.

Georgia coach Kirby Smart dismissed Daniels from the team the day after his arrest.

Alysa Liu wins gold for U.S. in women’s figure skating at 2026 Winter Olympics

Alysa Liu won a gold medal in women’s individual figure skating on Thursday, making her the first U.S. woman to take the Olympic podium in the event since 2006. Japan’s Kaori Sakamoto took silver and Ami Nakai, also of Japan, took the bronze.

The last American woman to earn a medal in individual figure skating was Sasha Cohen, who took home silver in 2006. Sarah Hughes was the last American woman to take home a gold medal, in 2002 — four years before Liu was even born. Michelle Kwan also won a bronze medal at those Olympics. This is Liu’s second gold medal.  

“I just like, can’t process this. There’s no way,” Liu could be heard telling her coaches as she walked down the hallway after winning.

Liu, 20, started the free skate in third place, behind Japan’s Nakai and Sakamoto, following the short program on Tuesday. Isabeau Levito, 18, was in eighth place, while Amber Glenn, 26, was in 13th place after an error in her short program. 

Glenn was the first U.S. skater to take the ice for her free skate. After failing to complete a triple loop on Tuesday, her score going into the free skate was 67.39. During Thursday’s skate, she nailed a triple axel, though she had to catch herself with her hand after nearly falling during her final loop. She scored 147.52, for a total score of 214.91.

Photos captured Glenn embracing her coach after her skate. Glenn looked visibly thrilled, smiling and jumping for joy. Despite entering the free skate in 13th place, she was at the top of the leaderboard for much of the event, finally being unseated by Japanese skater Mone Chiba. Glenn ended the competition in fifth place, and Chiba took fourth place.

Liu praised Glenn’s pop-scored comeback in a brief interview with an NBC Olympics correspondent.  

“She did so good. I watched it on the bus on the way here, and aw, she killed it, and I’m really happy for her,” Liu said. 

Levito was the next American woman to skate. She took the ice with a score of 70.84 from her short program. She fell on the landing of her opening triple flip, losing nine points, but recovered to skate through the rest of her routine.

Levito looked disappointed after leaving the ice, even as Glenn cheered for her. She also appeared emotional as her score of 131.96 was read out. Levito racked up a total score of 202.80 and came in 12th overall. 

Liu was the final U.S. competitor and the third-to-last skater to take the ice. She looked at ease during her warmup, waving to spectators as she rehearsed. She entered the rink with a score of 76.59 after her carefree short program. Liu looked casual and energetic during her free skate, sailing through a triple lutz and triple salchow. She had a broad smile on her face throughout the event, and the crowd roared every time she landed a jump.

Liu looked particularly at ease during her choreographic step sequences, and ended the routine triumphantly as her family rose for a standing ovation.  

Liu’s score was 150.20, for a total score of 226.79. 

“That’s what the f*** I’m talking about!” she shouted to the camera after finishing her skate. She bounced off the ice to hug her coaches and could be heard saying, “That was so great!” as they handed her her skate guards. Glenn and Liu were also seen hugging. 

“I was so calm when I started,” Liu said following the competition. “I have this breathing technique that I use throughout this program, and I was just making sure to lock in on that, be as smooth as I can and look out into the crowd during all my transitions.”

“I did that, and I felt everyone’s energy. I felt my energy,” she said, adding that she felt she “put it all out there.” 

On whether she is glad to have returned to the sport in 2024, after having retired at 16 following the Beijing 2022 Winter Games, Liu said: “It was just right.”

Sakamoto earned silver for her skate to a medley of Edith Piaf songs. She missed a triple jump, but otherwise skated cleanly, and embraced Liu after she came off the ice.

Nakai struggled with some of her jumps, but the high difficulty score of her routine meant she still took home the bronze medal. Liu and Nakai also hugged after Nakai’s score was read out.

The United States also took gold in the team skating event earlier in the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Games.

Trump White House ballroom plan faces lawsuit

The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, a panel made up of President Donald Trump’s appointees, on Thursday approved his proposal to build a ballroom larger than the White House itself where the East Wing once stood.The meeting was supposed to be on the design, with a final vote expected at next month’s session. But the chairman, Rodney Mims Cook Jr., made a motion to also vote on final approval, and six of the seven commissioners who were all installed by the Republican president since the start of the year voted in favor twice. One commissioner, James McCrery, did not vote because he was the initial architect on the project.“Our sitting president has actually designed a very beautiful structure,” Cook said before the voting. “The United States just should not be entertaining the world in tents.”Cook echoed one of Trump’s arguments for adding a ballroom to the White House: It would end the long-standing practice of erecting temporary structures that Trump calls tents on the South Lawn to host visiting dignitaries for state dinners and other functions.Cook said no other president had taken steps to correct that “until President Trump.”The project will be the subject of additional discussion by the National Capital Planning Commission in March.At the fine art’s commission’s January meeting, some commissioners questioned the lead architect about the “immense” design and scale of the project even as they broadly endorsed Trump’s vision for a ballroom roughly twice the size of the White House itself.Some changes suggested at that meeting were made and were welcomed by the commissioners on Thursday.Trump’s decision in October to demolish the East Wing prompted a public outcry when it began without the independent reviews, congressional approval and public comment that are typical even for relatively minor modifications to historic buildings in Washington.The National Trust for Historic Preservation has sued in federal court to halt construction of the ballroom. Danish rock icons Volbeat have confirmed that longtime touring guitarist Flemming C. Lund is now their permanent lead guitarist, succeeding Rob Caggiano.

“We’re very happy to announce that after this past year of touring and, of course, laying down some scorching solos on God Of Angels Trust, we’ve finally ‘put a ring on it’ and Flemming C. Lund is officially the permanent lead guitar player in Volbeat,” the band said via social media.

Lund had previously filled in for Caggiano on the band’s 2023 summer tour. He has also played in The Arcane Order, Temple of Scorn, and Asinhell, and was formerly part of Autumn Leaves.

“When I was asked by Michael Poulsen if I wanted to help them, I was honestly at first very overwhelmed by the request… But after a little time to think and talk with those closest to me, it dawned on me that it was something I could not possibly say no to,” Lund commented on joining the band in 2023.

Rob Caggiano, who played on four of Volbeat‘s albums — Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies, Seal the Deal & Let’s Boogie, Rewind, Replay, Rebound, and Servant Of The Mind — officially left the band in June 2023.

“Sometimes relationships simply run their course… We had a very special undeniable magic together as a band. It’s not something that comes around too often in this life and it’s not something to be taken lightly,” Caggiano reflected, while also expressing excitement for his future endeavors.

Award-winning singer José van Dam dies at age 85

José van Dam, an award-winning Belgian bass-baritone opera singer who created the title role in Olivier Messiaen’s “Saint François d’Assise,” has died at age 85, a Belgian conservatory announced Thursday.

Van Dam died Tuesday in Croatia, said Natsumi Krischer of the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Belgium. Van Dam founded its voice section in 2004 and was a master in residence there.

Born Joseph van Damme in Brussels on Aug. 25, 1940, van Dam attended the Brussels Royal Conservatory and adopted José van Dam as his stage name when he made his opera debut in 1960 as Don Basilio in Rossini’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège.

He sang at the Paris Opera for the first time two years later as Priam and the Voice of Mercury in Berlioz’s “Les Troyens,” His profile rose in the late 1960s and early 1970s at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, where Lorin Maazel was chief conductor, and with 1971 performances at the Salzburg Easter Festival as Don Pizarro in Beethoven’s “Fidelio” with conductor Herbert von Karajan.

Van Dam performed Escamillo in Bizet’s “Carmen” for his debuts at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala in 1972, London’s Royal Opera in 1973 and New York’s Metropolitan Opera in 1975, then sang the title role in Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro” on tour with the Paris Opera at the Met in 1976.

He was particularly acclaimed for the title roles of Verdi’s “Falstaff” and “Simon Boccanegra,” Mozart’s “Don Giovanni,” Berg’s “Wozzeck” and Mussorgsky’s “Boris Godunov” along with Philipp II in Verdi’s “Don Carlo,” Hans Sachs in Wagner’s “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” and Amfortas in Wagner’s “Parsifal.”

“Before taking on a new role that has interested me, I always looked carefully at the tessitura,” van Dam said during an interview with Opera magazine published in 2010. “At age 20, I was more of a bass; with the help of careful exercises, the voice stretched further at both ends, and especially at the top, I’ve never had any particular vocal difficulties with a role, but I’ve always been careful.”

Known for elegant interpretations, van Dam expressed a preference for concerts over operas during a 1981 interview.

“When I’m on the stage and I’m acting, I’m singing Figaro or Giovanni or Amfortas,” he said. “I’m not José van Dam!”

He was in the initial cast of “Saint François” at Paris in 1983 and against at the Salzburg Festival in 1988.

“Technically and interpretively impressive in his extremely long role,” critic John Rockwell wrote in The New York Times during the premiere run.

Van Dam’s final opera role was in Massenet’s “Don Quichotte” at Brussels’ La Monnaie in 2010.

Van Dam received 10 Grammy Award nominations and won three times, earning a vocal solo honor for a recording of Ravel songs with conductor Pierre Boulez in 1984, and best opera recording for Strauss’ “Die Frau ohne Schatten” in 1992 and “Meistersinger” in 1997, both with conductor Georg Solti.

He portrayed Leporello a 1979 movie of Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” directed by Joseph Losey and played an opera star named Joachim Dallayrac in “The Music Teacher,” a 1988 release that was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
