College baseball Week 2: Top 25 rankings, play of the week and what to watch

Kent State did the unthinkable this past week. After pushing LSU to the edge in Baton Rogue in a midweek matchup, the Golden Flashes took that momentum with them into Knoxville and won a road series against Tennessee. And as a result, the Vols took a big slide in this week’s rankings, dropping seven spots to No. 20.

How will the Vols respond? Well, they’re facing the top team in the country in UCLA on Friday, so they’ll have to bounce back fast. The Bruins, and the four teams behind them, held steady in the rankings after dominant performances, but after that there were more shakeups.

TCU had a rough week overall. After losing its midweek game to UT Arlington, it got swept by UCLA in Los Angeles, causing the Horned Frogs to drop 11 spots. The week’s biggest risers were Southern Miss and Oklahoma, which each climbed up eight spots. Louisville fell out of the rankings completely, paving the way for Ole Miss to break through at No. 25.

Here are how the entire top 25 rankings look as of Feb. 23, plus our favorite plays and what we’re watching in the week to come.

Not that LSU needs anymore power than it already has, now it has Jake Brown launching home runs like this.

And how about another home run? This one from UCLA’s Roch Cholowsky. He certainly is living up to all the hype he had before the season started.

Player to watch

Jackson Flora, RHP, UCSB

Flora has been rising up draft boards, and for good reason. The junior, who Kiley McDaniel has at No. 4 in his MLB draft rankings, touched 100 MPH in his 2026 debut and he has kept up the heat since then. Does he have enough to over take Cholowsky for the No. 1 pick? We’ll just have to wait and see.

No. 10 Florida at No. 17 Miami

Game 1: 7 p.m. on Friday (ACC Network Extra)
Game 2: 6 p.m. on Saturday (ACC Network Extra)
Game 3: 1 p.m. on Sunday (ACC Network Extra)

We can’t get enough of these early top-ranked series, and an in-state one makes this all the better. Miami has been solid to open the season, and though the Canes are ranked behind Florida, they do sport a perfect 7-0 record for the year, while the Gators have already dropped one game. Florida will have to be ready for Miami’s Alex Sosa, who has been dominant this season so far with five home runs and 17 RBIs. And if he wasn’t a tall enough task, there’s Daniel Cuvet right behind him with five homers himself to go along with 13 RBIs. It looks to be a high-scoring affair in Coral Gables this weekend.

PARIS — Britain’s Queen Camilla told French rape survivor Gisèle Pelicot on Monday that she was left “speechless” by Pelicot’s memoir, as the two met over tea at Clarence House in a private meeting rich with symbolism.

Pelicot, 73, is in Britain at the end of a U.K. tour for her memoir, “A Hymn to Life: Shame Has to Change Sides,” which was launched Friday at London’s Royal Festival Hall.

The event drew a sellout crowd of more than 2,000, with readings by actors Kate Winslet, Kristin Scott Thomas and Juliet Stevenson.

Camilla welcomed Pelicot and her partner, Jean-Loup Agopian, and the two women spoke for about 30 minutes through an interpreter.

The queen opened in French and joked she had studied the language 60 years ago but had forgotten it.

Camilla, who has long campaigned against domestic violence and sexual abuse, told Pelicot she had read the memoir in just two days.

“I couldn’t put it down,” Camilla said.

“I’ve met so many survivors of rape and sexual abuse I never thought I could be shocked by anything any more, but I was shocked at your case. It left me speechless,” she added.

The meeting came at a fraught moment for the monarchy, as the royal family confronts renewed scrutiny over the fallout from the Andrew-Epstein scandal — a crisis that has again raised questions about accountability, privilege and how institutions respond to sexual abuse.

Against that backdrop, observers said that Camilla’s embrace of Pelicot carried added resonance for a royal household trying to show moral clarity on violence against women.

Pelicot became an international symbol of resilience after waiving her anonymity and declaring that shame belonged with her abusers, not with her.

Her ex-husband, Dominique Pelicot, was jailed for 20 years for drugging and raping her and allowing other men to rape her while she was unconscious over nearly a decade.

Fifty men were found guilty of rape or sexual offenses after a trial in Avignon that ended in December 2024.

During Monday’s meeting, Pelicot spoke of receiving “incredible strength” from supporters.

Camilla replied: “you have so much support.”

Camilla had written to Pelicot last year praising her “extraordinary dignity and courage” — a letter Pelicot has said she now keeps framed in her office.

Kelly Clarkson learned early on in her career that it’s worthwhile to push back against music industry executives when they don’t see the value in a song she loves.

In a new interview with Sirius XM that also features her fellow The Voice coach John Legend, Clarkson recounted how coming from American Idol put her at a disadvantage with label executives.

They thought she was just a TV show star, not a songwriter. And they were ready to dismiss the song that wound up becoming one of her all-time biggest hits.

Clarkson explains that she pitched her song “Because of You” for her first album, and the label flat-out “rejected” it.

“They were like, ‘It doesn’t rhyme. It’s the worst song ever,'” she recalls.

She said that the song didn’t need to be a single, but she wanted to include it on an album track list because it was “meaningful to me.” Clarkson originally wrote “Because of You” at 16 years old, inspired by her difficult relationship with her father as her parents were going through a divorce.

“Because of You” eventually ended up as a single on her second album, Breakaway, and wound up becoming the biggest global hit of her career.

Clarkson says that hearing “Because of You” be dismissed so quickly “bummed me out” because it taught her a tough truth about the music industry.

That was “that a lot of people just don’t care,” she reflects. “They don’t care about the art of it, they just wanna make the money.”

But fighting for the song, and ultimately releasing it as a single, showed her something much more hopeful.

“But then the fans got on board with it and it was my biggest No. 1 worldwide,” she continues. “So I think that was the surprise of, like, no matter how much you can feel like the machine is against you, your fans will be there, and they will be the reason why you get to continue to do it.”

She also points out that record executives come and go, but many fans stay in an artists’ corner through their whole careers.

“I’ve had like, five different label heads in a matter of years,” Clarkson notes. “…So it really is about doing what you love and holding strong to that. I think I was surprised because I just didn’t see that coming. I thought no one would hear [the song.] I thought it would be an album track.”

Kansas coach Bill Self entered Monday’s showdown with Houston in possession of a 40-0 record in Big Monday games inside Allen Fieldhouse. That’s a fact that sounds like a lie — but it’s true. Regardless, oddsmakers made the Jayhawks slight underdogs on Big Monday at home against Kelvin Sampson’s Cougars — and, to be clear, I get it. Algorithms are algorithms. But, eventually, all algorithms are gonna have to figure out a way to take into account the reality that Self never loses at home on Big Monday.

Final score: Kansas 69, Houston 56.

So now Self is 41-0 at home on Big Monday.

Absolutely incredible.

As the “Aint No Seats Podcast” noted on X, the Jayhawks have actually been underdogs three times in the past two months inside Allen Fieldhouse. Those games have unfolded like this:

  • 1/13/26: Kansas 84, Iowa State 63 (despite the Jayhawks closing as 3.5-point underdogs).
  • 2/9/26: Kansas 82, Arizona 78 (despite the Jayhawks closing as 5-point underdogs and playing without Darryn Peterson, the favorite to go No. 1 in the 2026 NBA Draft).
  • 2/23/26: Kansas 69, Houston 56 (despite the Jayhawks closing as 2.5-point underdogs and being only two days removed from a double-digit loss at home to a Cincinnati team that entered just 1-9 in Quadrant-1 opportunities).

Bottom line, Allen Fieldhouse is a special place — what happened Saturday notwithstanding. The Jayhawks lose there sometimes, sure. But, at this point, under this coach, it should  probably never be the expected outcome.

Kansas is up to No. 11 in Tuesday morning’s updated CBS Sports Top 25 And 1 daily college basketball rankings, where Duke remains No. 1 for the third consecutive day. Houston is down to No. 6. Next up for the Jayhawks is Saturday’s game at Arizona. FYI: those two teams now have the third-best odds (Arizona)  and the ninth-best odds (Kansas) to win the 2026 NCAA Tournament, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

A state investigator testified Tuesday that Colt Gray’s father revealed his 14-year-old son had become aggressive and was in need of mental health counseling in the months leading up to the 2024 deadly rampage at a Georgia high school.

Colin Gray, 55, pleaded not guilty on two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of involuntary manslaughter, 20 counts of cruelty to children and five counts of reckless conduct. His son, Colt Gray, is accused of opening fire at Apalachee High School on Sept. 4, 2024, killing two students, two teachers and wounding nine others.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation special agent Kelsey Ward, who interviewed Colin Gray about three hours after the shooting, told the court that he said Colt would try to fight him and that he had attempted to get help for his son by contacting counselors and mental health facilities to explore inpatient care options.

But despite this concerning behavior, Gray said he still wanted to get his son into deer hunting to help cope. After a hunting trip in which they bonded, he told his son that maybe “Santa Claus” would gift him a firearm, Gray told Ward, according to a recording of the interview played in court. He added that he purchased a rifle for his teenage son for Christmas.

“He shot a deer for the first time ever in the woods, we bonded, it was like the greatest day ever,” Gray told Ward during the interview. “In my mind, I swear to god I thought he was gonna be perfect from then on.”

Still, Gray told Ward, he saw troubling warning signs.

A couple of days before the shooting, Gray told Ward that he saw a poster of Parkland’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooter Nikolas Cruz on the wall of his son’s room. Gray said he did not know who Cruz was, but asked his son, who told him, “that’s one of the guys that did that last school shooting.”

Gray recalled giving his son a “pep talk” the day before the shooting and the morning of, encouraging him to go to school after a day of absence, Ward said.

“Let’s make a plan, and we’ll figure this out,” he recalled telling his son, adding that he said he was proud of him.

On the morning of Sept. 4, 2024, Gray recalled receiving texts from his son that concerned him, including “I’m sorry. It’s not your fault,” and “You’re not to blame for any of it.” Gray told Ward he left work after receiving those messages and attempted to reach his son.

Gray went home and looked inside Colt’s room, and that’s when he realized that the AR rifle he kept in the corner of his room was not there.

Ward said Gray told her he could never imagine his son doing what he’s been accused of.

“I mean, how the hell is he going to walk across the yard with a long rifle and get on a bus? There’s no way this is him,” Gray told Ward.

Text messages displayed in court show Gray asking his daughter, Jenny, if she had heard from her brother, Colt, on the day of the shooting. Jenny attended Heyman Morris Middle School, which was right next door to Apalachee High School, and told her father she was scared while the building was in lockdown.

“No,” Jenny responded to her father. “But I think we are thinking the same thing and I don’t want to talk about it over text.”

“Yep, 10 four I’ll be there here in just a few,” Gray wrote to his daughter.

Things have taken a surreal turn in the camp of CKY. Just days after bassist Mike Leon announced his departure, citing “toxicity” and “unprofessionalism,” frontman Chad I Ginsburg has publicly disputed the claims – insisting Leon was actually fired for “hating dogs.”

Taking to Instagram on February 20, Leon confirmed he would not appear at the band’s upcoming shows. The former Soulfly bassist described joining CKY as a lifelong ambition that gradually soured behind the scenes.

“I want to let you know that my time with CKY has come to an end,” Leon wrote. “Growing up, I was a huge fan of the band, and getting the opportunity to play with them was a dream come true. I genuinely enjoyed my time there, and it was fun… until it wasn’t.”

“For full transparency, I will not be participating in the band’s upcoming shows,” he continued. “As unfortunate as this is, given the circumstances, I believe this was the right move to make. The differences regarding logistics and business decisions, primarily driven by the actions of the band’s leader [Ginsburg], created internal issues that made an already stressful environment increasingly difficult to work in.”

Leon went further, alleging long-running problems within the band’s leadership.

“This unprofessionalism and lack of accountability was known well before I joined, and persisted throughout my time with the band, making day-to-day operations a constant challenge,” he wrote. “The love I had for the band blinded me to the red flags my peers and the band’s previous history had warned me about, especially surrounding the frontman, yet I chose to believe things would be different.”

“In all of my years of working in this industry, I have never experienced this level of toxicity from an individual, and it stings extra having been perpetrated by the very band that first inspired me to start my career as a musician.

“Music should be a source of joy, but the environment became a source of stress that ultimately outweighed the positive aspects of being part of the band I grew up loving. I will continue creating music, and I sincerely thank all of you for your unconditional support.”

Ginsburg, however, paints a drastically different picture. Responding via Instagram Stories (as reported by Stereogum), the guitarist flatly rejected Leon‘s claims.

“I don’t know what Mike Leon is talking about in his post. However, I do know the facts and the facts are, Mike, and you know them too, is that we fired you last night because you hate dogs and you didn’t want to tour with the dogs and you wanted more money and you weren’t happy with anything ever. So unfortunately it’s not working out, Mike. But what you wrote is fucking crazy, dude. Like, prove any of that fucking shit.”

Shortly after, Ginsburg posted an open call for Nashville-based bassists to DM audition tapes – suggesting the band is moving forward swiftly despite the public spat.
