DHS official tells state election chiefs there won’t be ICE agents at polling places

0

A senior Department of Homeland Security official said on a call with state election officials Wednesday that immigration agents will not show up at polling places this year, according to three call participants.

“Any suggestion that ICE is going to be present at polling places is simply disinformation. There will be no ICE presence at polling locations,” said Heather Honey, a deputy assistant secretary for election integrity, according to one individual who participated in the call and requested anonymity to speak candidly and share quotes. Two other participants on the call confirmed the comments.

Honey, a conservative activist who was involved in the 2020 election denial movement before being appointed to a role in the Trump administration, made the remark after California Secretary of State Shirley Weber, a Democrat, asked if states would be alerted to immigration operations at polling sites.

Federal law makes it illegal to deploy “troops or armed men” to a polling site, but some election officials have raised concerns that President Donald Trump’s immigration operations could affect the upcoming midterms.

Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes, a Democrat, said that that he wasn’t swayed by Honey’s assurances.

“Heather Honey is an election denier with zero integrity. The fact that she’s speaking for the Department of Homeland Security is an embarrassment to election administrators who recognize her past work with the Cyber Ninja audit and all that nonsense,” he said. “I’m just not convinced.”

Honey was a subcontractor for Cyber Ninjas, a company hired by the Republican-controlled Arizona state Senate to investigate the 2020 election in Maricopa County. The investigation, which did not prove any fraud, was rooted in conspiracy theories and misunderstandings about the process, according to experts who monitored their review.

Members of the FBI, the Election Assistance Commission, the Department of Homeland Security, the United States Postal Service and the Department of Justice were present on Wednesday’s call with state election officials around the country. The FBI had scheduled the call earlier this month to discuss “preparations” for the midterm elections.

The call came in the wake of Trump saying that Republicans should “nationalize” voting in at least some paces, even though the U.S. Constitution grants states the authority to administer elections.

“I did not walk away from this meeting reassured that the federal government wouldn’t try to interfere in state sovereignty over the election,” said Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, a Democrat.

Some state election officials said the invitation was also the first time they have heard from anyone in the second Trump administration about election security in months, or ever.

Three participants interviewed by NBC News said the administration officials offered little in the way of new information and dodged state officials’ specific questions.

“When we asked about state sovereignty and could the federal government make public statements reinforcing the constitutional principle that the states, not the federal government, were in charge of elections, there was a stunned silence,” Bellows told reporters on Wednesday afternoon.

Fontes also noted the silence, saying it “does not speak well to this administration’s attitude towards the federalization of American elections.”

Cavaliers’ Harden questionable with fracture in right thumb

0

Cleveland star James Harden sustained a non-displaced fracture of his right thumb during Tuesday night’s win over the New York Knicks, the Cavaliers announced Wednesday.

X-rays Wednesday revealed the injury, leading to Harden’s questionable status ahead of Wednesday night’s matchup against the Milwaukee Bucks.

Harden, who plans to play through the injury, has been evaluated by a hand specialist and will not require surgery, sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania. He will undergo treatment and further evaluation, according to the team.

Harden was traded from the LA Clippers to the Cavaliers on Feb. 3. In seven games with Cleveland, the 17-year veteran is averaging 18.9 points, eight assists and 4.6 rebounds per game. Prior to the trade, he averaged 25.1 points, 8.1 assists and 4.8 rebounds in 44 appearances with the Clippers this season.

Cleveland (37-22) has won eight of its last nine games and is tied for third place in the Eastern Conference.

Cuba says it killed 4 people on speedboat from Florida who opened fire off Cuban coast

0

Cuba’s coastguard killed four people on a speedboat from Florida who opened fire off the Cuban coast on Wednesday, the interior ministry in Havana said.

The ship was one nautical mile northeast of the El Pino canal in Cayo Falcones, the ministry said in a statement. When five members of the Border Guard Troops approached the boat for identification, those aboard the speedboat allegedly began shooting. The commander of the Cuban boat was injured, the ministry said.

“As a result of the confrontation,” four people aboard the speedboat were killed and six were injured, the ministry said. The injured parties “were evacuated and received medical assistance.”

It is not clear who was in the Florida-registered speedboat, where they were from or what their reason was for entering Cuban waters or opening fire. An investigation is ongoing, the ministry said.

Florida Rep. María Elvira Salazar said she was “closely monitoring reports” of the incident, calling it an “unfolding situation.” Rep. Carlos Gimenez, who was born in Cuba, called the incident a “massacre” and said the use of lethal force against individuals on a boat registered to the U.S. raises serious concerns.

The Cuban government said it remained committed to “protecting its territorial waters.”

Tensions between the United States and Cuba have been escalating recently, with President Trump putting new sanctions and tariffs on the Caribbean country after the operation to capture former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

EMMURE Slammed For AI “Simpsons-Style” Announcement, FRANKIE PALMERI Responds

0

Emmure found themselves in hot water online after releasing an announcement video for their appearance at the Orlando, FL stop of this year’s Vans Warped Tour. The clip featured frontman Frankie Palmeri animated in a style reminiscent of The Simpsons, prompting backlash from fans who criticized the band for using AI instead of commissioning a human artist.

One user called out the band on social media: “All the money y’all make & you can’t hire an artist to make this, instead you use ai?” Palmeri fired back, explaining the reasoning behind the decision.

“I have an artist I work with regularly when I aim to make content like this,” Palmeri wrote. “Due to time restrictions, they weren’t able to produce the content without cutting corners. To be completely honest, I didn’t even want to make anything for this announcement. But, with respect to @vanswarpedtour and @kevinlyman I went ahead and made an announcement video clip. That’s all this is.”

He added: “You and countless other people have made such an incredibly, unnecessarily harsh critique about something so innocuous I’m actually shocked. Sorry I didn’t want to pretend to smile at a camera and talk about a ‘punk rock’ fest, that of which I never even asked to be a part of to begin with. After 9 albums, a dozen music videos, countless live shows, the fucking audacity to lambast me over 15 seconds of ‘artificial’ art is astonishing. Thanks.”

And sure, time constraints are time constraints. But the guy couldn’t have just done a quick voicevoer? Also, his comment about having to “talk about a ‘punk rock’ fest, that of which I never even asked to be a part of to begin with” feels kinda shitty. I guess the dude can take the money, but he’s still gonna complain.

Also, let’s not pretend that this is the thing that got Emmure in hot water. C’mon, Frankie.

James Harden injury: Cavaliers guard suffers thumb fracture, status unclear

0

The Cleveland Cavaliers announced that star guard James Harden suffered a fractured right thumb during Cleveland’s 109-94 win over the New York Knicks Tuesday night. Harden played 32 minutes and finished with 20 points, four assists and two rebounds, but a subsequent evaluation of his thumb confirmed the fracture.

It’s unclear how long Harden will be sidelined — if at all. Rather than already being ruled out, Harden is listed as questionable for Wednesday night’s matchup with the Milwaukee Bucks, the second night of a back-to-back. The team said Harden will continue to undergo treatment and evaluations for the injury. Given it’s Harden’s non-shooting hand, there is a chance he could still play despite any added difficulties the injury may bring.

“A postgame examination by the Cavaliers’ medical staff, followed by X-rays taken [Wednesday], confirmed a non-displaced fracture of the distal phalanx,” the team said. “Harden will undergo treatment and continued evaluation. An update on his status will be provided as appropriate.”

NBA MVP Rankings: Victor Wembanyama jumps into top three, Cade Cunningham could win by default

From the initial announcement, it sounds like Cleveland avoided a complete disaster with Harden not being immediately ruled out for a significant amount of time. The Cavs have gone 6-1 since trading for Harden in early February. He has established immediate chemistry with Donovan Mitchell in the backcourt, giving Cleveland someone who can take offensive pressure off Mitchell in a way Darius Garland couldn’t.

Harden is averaging 18.9 points, eight rebounds and 4.6 assists per game as a member of the Cavs. Before the trade, he averaged 25.1 points, 8.1 rebounds and 4.8 assists in 44 games for the Los Angeles Clippers this season.

Cleveland (37-22) is tied with the Knicks for third in the East. If Harden has to miss time, they could slip in the standings as the Toronto Raptors (34-24) sit just 2.5 games behind them. Dropping a spot in the standings would be a small price to pay if it means having a fully healthy Harden available for the postseason.
