INDIANAPOLIS — The Chicago Bears have granted linebacker Tremaine Edmunds permission to seek a trade, a source confirmed to ESPN.
Edmunds, 27, is entering the final season of the four-year, $72 million contract he signed with the Bears as a free agent in 2023. His contract carries a $13.9 million base salary for 2026 with a $1 million roster bonus due on the fifth day of the league year. His cap hit is $17.9 million.
If Edmunds does not find a trade partner, he is in line to become a cap casualty. Releasing Edmunds would create $15 million in salary cap space for Chicago.
“There’s a couple guys we’ve got to make decisions on,” Bears general manager Ryan Poles said when asked Tuesday about Edmunds’ future.
“If that’s trade, release, there’s a lot of different options that … or few options that we can go down to create some space. But like I said before, this is a unique situation where we’ve gotten our roster in a position where we have a lot of talented players, a lot of guys getting paid well, and that puts some constraints on the cap. So, we got to make some tough decisions. And, you know, like I said, when we win games, you create these relationships. There’s leadership guys or guys that were captains that mean a lot to our organization. But when you’re kind of put in a corner…”
Edmunds led the Bears with 112 tackles last season to go along with nine passes defended, four interceptions, one sack and a fumble recovery despite missing four games with a groin injury. He also tallied 13 tackles across Chicago’s two playoff games.
A first-round pick by the Buffalo Bills in 2018, Edmunds has posted at least 102 tackles in each of his eight NFL seasons.
The news that the Bears are allowing Edmunds to find a trade was first reported by the Chicago Tribune.
Team USA women’s hockey players respond to Trump’s joke
Scamurra said she wanted to focus on the positives, such as how dominant the women’s team was at the Olympics — not only did Team USA’s women’s hockey team win gold, but they did so by setting a record of 331 minutes and 23 seconds in consecutive shutouts at the Games.
The majority of Team USA’s men’s hockey team attended the State of the Union on Tuesday night, but the women’s team declined the invitation, citing other professional and academic obligations. Trump has said he looks forward to being able to host them soon.
Critics of the men’s team have said the men should not have laughed at Trump’s joke, potentially said something in the women’s defense or apologized afterward.
“It is never just locker room talk,” one user wrote in a post on X. “I’m angry. What a disappointment to have something so joyous tarnished by a dreadful reality where women are being belittled & disrespected for existing. The US Women’s Hockey Team deserves way better.”
New Jersey Devils center Jack Hughes told reporters that he believes the women’s team knows how much the men support them despite the backlash. He scored the game-winning goal against Canada on Sunday and his brother, Quinn Hughes, scored an overtime goal against Sweden to win the quarterfinals.
Their mother, Ellen Hughes, is a former Team USA hockey player who now works as a consultant to the women’s team.
Jack Hughes told NBC’s “TODAY” show that had there been a video on him and his brother during the women’s gold medal game, they would have looked like “the biggest superfans of all time.”
On Wednesday, goaltender Jeremy Swayman told reporters that the men’s team “should have reacted differently” after the president’s postgame joke.
“We know that we are so excited for the women’s team, we have so much respect for the women’s team, and to share that gold medal with them is something that we’re forever grateful for,” he said.
Trump administration’s ‘third country’ deportation policy is unlawful, judge rules
The Trump administration’s latest policy of deporting immigrants to “third countries” to which they have no ties is unlawful and must be set aside, a federal judge ruled Wednesday in a case that already reached the nation’s highest court.U.S. District Judge Brian E. Murphy noted that the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the administration’s favor last year, pausing Murphy’s previous decision and clearing the way for a flight carrying several migrants to complete its trip to war-torn South Sudan, where they had no ties.Murphy said migrants challenging the Department of Homeland Security’s policy have the right to “meaningful notice” and an opportunity to object before they are removed to a third country. The policy “extinguishes valid challenges to third-country removal by effecting removal before those challenges can be raised,” the judge concluded.”These are our laws, and it is with profound gratitude for the unbelievable luck of being born in the United States of America that this Court affirms these and our nation’s bedrock principle: that no ‘person’ in this country may be ‘deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law,'” Murphy wrote.In June, the Supreme Court’s conservative majority found that immigration officials can quickly deport people to third countries. Liberal justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented, saying the ruling gives the government special treatment.Murphy said President Donald Trump’s administration has repeatedly violated — or tried to violate — his orders. Last March, he noted, the Defense Department deported at least six class members to El Salvador and Mexico without providing the process required under a temporary restraining order that Murphy issued. TOSIN ABASI Drops New Original Track “In Umbris”
Tosin Abasi, acclaimed for his work with Animals As Leaders, has released a brand-new original track titled “In Umbris.” Abasi both wrote and recorded the piece with his new Córdoba Abasi Stage 7, which looks pretty damn cool.
The track was mixed and mastered by his bandmate Javier Reyes, while the accompanying video was directed by Ivan Chopik.
Outside that, no word on new Animals As Leaders outside a 2025 interview with Guitar World, where Abasi said he’d like to spend a chunk of 2025 working on (and hopefully completing) the new record.
“We are about to begin pre-production on an album,” said Abasi. “We do have some touring – we’re headed to Europe in a few weeks – but I want to spend a portion of this year writing the record. In a perfect world, it’ll be written and recorded by the end of this year.”
Abasi also touched on his long-rumored blues album, noting that he’s just having fun learning the genre at the moment. Which is a cool take on creativity – simply enjoying the process instead of working toward an end goal, when maybe that’s not the best choice.
“This is funny, because [Abasi Concepts COO, Ivan Chopik] is a fantastic blues guitarist, and I’d never really gotten into the genre. And there’s amazing players like Josh Smith and Eric Gales that I’m like, ‘Okay, I’ve been missing out.’
“So I had a moment over the pandemic, where I was like, ‘I’m learning the blues,’ and I got really into it, and I said I’d do an album. I gotta respect the art, and I don’t know that I’ve evolved to the point where I can [do it justice], you know what I mean? But it’s fun. It’s fun to mess around with.”

2026 Cognizant Classic predictions
One major surprise the model is calling for at the Cognizant Classic 2026: Lowry, the second favorite this week and the 2019 Open Championship winner, doesn’t even crack the top 3. He’s a golfer to fade this week. Lowry hasn’t won an individual event on the PGA Tour since that major championship, though he did team up with Rory McIlroy to win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in 2024. 32 years after American woman found murdered in Germany, DNA leads to an arrest: “Such cases are never forgotten”
German police said Wednesday they had arrested an 81-year-old suspect this week in the sexual assault and murder of an American woman more than 30 years ago.
The body of 24-year-old tourist Amy Lopez was found in 1994 near the historic Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, located on the Rhine river in the western city of Koblenz. She was a student from Texas, German news program Tagesschau reported.
Children discovered her corpse, which was partially nude and bore severe head wounds, according to local authorities.
“The victim was strangled, struck on the head with a stone, and stabbed multiple times, ultimately resulting in his death,” the Koblenz Public Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.
Police had puzzled over the case ever since Lopez’s body was found but Chief Public Prosecutor Manfred Mannweiler said advances in DNA technology had allowed police to reopen the investigation and arrest the suspect in a retirement home.

“Methods have improved since the crime,” Mannweiler said. “What is possible today would have been less so in 1994.”
More evidence was collected after investigators re-examined Lopez’s clothing and about 1,600 samples were analyzed, the prosecutor’s office said. In 2024, 30 years after Lopez was found, police offered a 2,500 euro reward for information leading to an arrest after a male DNA trace was discovered.
More tips also came in after the case was featured last year on “Aktenzeichen XY,” a true crime program, according to the prosecutor’s office.
Mannweiler said the arrested man’s DNA had been on file since he had been convicted in 1999 of attempting to rape a 16-year-old girl in Koblenz and was sentenced to seven years in prison. The genetic data had later been deleted, but police obtained a new saliva sample from the suspect which was later matched to a DNA trace found inside Lopez’s jeans, the prosecutor said.
“There was a nagging fear gnawing at everyone that the case might never be solved,” Mannweiler said. “There’s relief that we might solve it now.”
Police had informed Lopez’s father of the arrest on Monday, Mannweiler added.
“This case should make it clear to everyone that law enforcement authorities do not rest as long as a serious crime remains unsolved. Such cases are not forgotten,” Mannweiler said. “Not even after 32 years.”

Senior detective Friederike Manheller-Sander of Koblenz police said officers took up the case after forming a unit last August to look at cold cases.
“Behind every case there is a person whose life was taken too soon,” she said. “Our commitment is to do everything possible to find answers.”
The suspect is being held in pretrial detention at a correctional facility in Rhineland-Palatinate on suspicion of a premeditated murder, the prosecutor’s office said.

Which Country Artists Are In the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?
Willie Nelson is the most recent country artist to enter the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis were among the first.
In between it was slim pickings. Between 2003 and 2022 only two country artists were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Ironically, they’re the only two on this list who’ve not yet been made members of the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Will that change in 2026?

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Criteria
Per our friends at Ultimate Classic Rock, criteria for the Rock Hall is a bit more broad than country music’s equivalent. An artist need only have released his/her/their first commercial recording 25 years ago.
In addition to performers, musical influences are also inducted each year and that’s where many of country music’s biggest stars won. For example, Jimmie Rodgers’ inclusion in the inaugural class (1986) was not as performer. He’d been dead for over 50 years at that point and little video existed to vet his talents.
Country Music Hall of Fame Criteria
The Country Music Hall of Fame selects an artist or musician from the modern era and veterans category each year, and then another from a rotating trio of categories. Unlike its rock counterpart, there is no broad conversation or vote. They just tell us who’s getting in each year.
The Nashville-based Hall of Fame has existed since 1961 so several artists earned a medallion there before getting into the Rock Hall. Not all did however. Lewis and Ray Charles are two heralded in rock circles before country music.

Nearly one-third of the country artists in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame were inducted in the inaugural class, which means it’s been pretty quiet for 40 years. These 17 artists have cracked the rock code however. In fact two country singers listed are Rock Hall of Famers, but not Country Music Hall of Famers.
