Papa Johns Closing 300 Locations Amid Sales Slump


Papa Johns‘ report card came out Thursday (Feb. 26), and company CFO Ravi Thanawala said their locations posted same-store sales declines of more than five percent in North America during Q4 2025.

As a result, they plan to close 300 underperforming restaurants.

Which Papa John’s Locations Will Close Forever?

According to CNN, the Papa Johns locations getting the axe “don’t meet brand expectations or lack a clear path to sustainable financial improvement,” according to Thanawala.

The locations on the chopping block are more than a decade old, generate average unit volume of less than $600,000 and typically generate negative income.

Papa Johns wants consumers to know that they didn’t just throw darts at a map to decide which 300 stores to close.

“We took a pretty surgical approach of looking at quality of operation, quality of the trade zone, quality of the assets itself, and made a pretty clear determination restaurant by restaurant, which are the ones that we thought should close,” Thanawala said.

The closures will start in 2026 with 200 locations shuttered. The other 100 will close down by the end of 2027.

How Many Papa Johns Locations Are There in America?

As of December of 2025, there were around 3,215 Papa Johns locations scattered across America. That number will be decreasing to around 2,900 once the completion of the closing of 300 units takes place.

Is Papa John Still a Part of Papa Johns?

No, Papa John Schnatter, who founded the franchise in 1984, is not still part of the company in any operational or leadership role at Papa Johns International today.

His exit was quite muddy, according to Forbes.

ESPN obtained the results of the NFL Players Association’s 2026 report cards, an annual survey that grades franchises from A-plus to F-minus on everything from ownership to treatment of families.

Per the survey results obtained by ESPN, this year’s report cards are based on responses from 1,759 players. All players who were on a 2025 roster at the time of the survey were eligible to participate, and it was conducted from Nov. 2 to Dec. 11.

Israel launches “preemptive strike” on Iran, Israeli military says


Israel launched what it described as a “preemptive strike” on Iran Saturday morning, Israeli officials said.

The Israel Defense Ministry said in a statement that it launched the strike because it was expecting “a missile and drone attack” from Iran “in the immediate future.”

The scope and location of the strike was not immediately clear. Multiple explosions were heard in Tehran, including in the Seyed Khandan area of northern Tehran. Iranian state television reported on an explosion, without offering a cause. 

The strike happened near the offices of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. It wasn’t immediately clear whether the 86-year-old Khamenei had been in his offices at the time. He hasn’t been seen publicly in days as tensions with the U.S. have grown.

Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz announced that he had also issued a state of emergency across all of Israel.  

“You must obey the instructions of the Home Front Command and the authorities and remain in the protected areas,” the statement read.

Sirens sounded across Israel at the same time as Katz’s announcement. The Israeli military said that it had issued a “proactive alert to prepare the public for the possibility of missiles being launched toward the state of Israel.”

The U.S. military declined to immediately comment on the attack.

VOMITORY Return With Savage New Album In Death Throes, Drop Blistering Single “For Gore And Country”


In any credible death metal debate, Vomitory belong near the top of the bill. Since forming in 1989, the Swedish wrecking crew delivered eight full-length assaults between 1996 and 2011, helping define the genre’s modern extremity before bowing out in 2013. The silence didn’t last. A 30th anniversary return in 2019 reignited the fire, and 2023’s comeback crusher All Heads Are Gonna Roll proved the band hadn’t dulled their blades.

Now, just three years later, they’re back with their latest barrage: In Death Throes, due April 10 via Metal Blade Records.

If the previous record marked a triumphant resurrection, In Death Throes is the sound of a band tightening the screws. Drummer Tobias Gustafsson says the new material wastes no time picking up where its predecessor left off – only meaner.

“In Death Throes picks up where All Heads Are Gonna Roll left off, but we’ve turned the intensity up a notch,” Gustafsson explains. “[New guitarist] Christian [Fredriksson] quickly found his place and even contributed music to four killer tracks. These additions bring a bit of diversity to our sound without straying too far from the formula.”

Drums and vocals were captured at Leon Music Studios in Karlstad with producer Rikard Lofgren, a longtime collaborator whose résumé includes several of the band’s earlier high-water marks. Guitars and bass were tracked at Goff Studios, also in Karlstad, with Fredriksson stepping in behind the board.

For mixing and mastering, Vomitory once again tapped Lawrence Mackrory at Rorysound Studios in Uppsala. Known for his work with Paradise Lost, Bloodbath and Lik, Mackrory delivered a production that hits with concrete heft but leaves enough air for the riffs to breathe.

Visually, the band stayed consistent. As with its predecessor, the artwork for In Death Throes comes courtesy of Giannis Nakos of Remedy Art Design, whose past clients include Evergrey, Suffocation and The Crown. Layout duties were handled by Seiya Ogino of Ogino Design.

Ahead of the album’s release, Vomitory have unleashed the opening salvo: “For Gore And Country.” The track is pure forward momentum, weaponizing grind, D-beat chaos and groove-laden breakdowns into a single, unrelenting charge.

“‘For Gore And Country’ charges forward relentlessly just like the rotting hordes in the lyrics do,” Gustafsson says. “Starting off with a classic Vomitory grind, then diving headfirst into a total headbanging party, to then take off again into grind and D-beat turmoil. Oh wait! Another headbanging party towards the end of the song! For gore and country, we endure!”

UFC 327 has its main event. Jiri Prochazka and Carlos Ulberg will battle for the vacant light heavyweight championship inside Kaseya Center in Miami on April 11. UFC president and CEO Dana White made the fight official with an announcement on Friday night.

The title was vacated by Alex Pereira, who was on his second run as light heavyweight champion after having previously held the middleweight title, in anticipation of a move to the heavyweight division.

Prochazka is aiming for his own second stint as champion at 205 pounds, having previously won the title with a win over Glover Teixeira at UFC 275. Prochazka lost the belt in his first defense, suffering a TKO defeat to Pereira. Prochazka then lost a rematch for the title against Pereira two fights later.

Prochazka has been perfect in his UFC career outside of the two defeats to Pereira, compiling a 6-2 record in the Octagon with all victories coming via stoppage. He has won back-to-back fights, stopping Jamahal Hill via TKO and then scoring a dramatic comeback knockout of Khalil Rountree Jr. this past October.

Ulberg stumbled in his UFC debut, suffering a knockout loss to Kennedy Nzechukwu. Since that loss, Ulberg has rattled off nine consecutive victories, most recently knocking out Dominick Reyes in a UFC Fight Night main event.

Prochazka and Ulberg sit at No. 2 and 3, respectively, in the official UFC light heavyweight rankings, sitting only behind No. 1 Magomed Ankalaev.

Prochazka vs. Ulberg tops a card that also includes a flyweight title defense between champion Joshua Van and challenger Tatsuro Taira.

White also announced on Friday that former Bellator two-division champion Patricio Pitbull would return in Miami to take on a familiar name in Aaron Pico as both men spent years with the promotion. The two will meet at featherweight on the prelims.

As Europe readies tougher migration measures, a Greek island sees illegal crossings spike


TYMPAKI, Greece — An Israeli-built Heron 2 drone whirs off the tarmac on a new surveillance mission.

The aircraft’s sensors scan for boats along the 350-kilometer (220-mile) stretch of sea between Libya and the Greek island of Crete and can detect activity hidden below deck.

Crete, Greece’s largest island, saw a threefold increase in irregular migration last year, becoming the country’s busiest point of entry with about 20,000 arrivals, even as overall irregular migration to Europe fell by 26% in 2025 compared with the previous year, according to data from Frontex, the European Union’s border agency.

One of Europe’s deadliest migration corridors, where unclaimed bodies often wash up on shore, the passage to Crete is fueled by wars and instability across Africa and is growing busier even as pressure eases on other Mediterranean routes.

As the EU readies tougher measures to combat illegal migration, Frontex says it will focus resources on Crete in an attempt to end the surge in arrivals.

Eastern Libya has become a key launch point for smugglers, undercutting years of EU efforts to curb departures and making Crete a new pressure point.

Many boats leaving Libya are overcrowded and barely seaworthy, attempting a long, exposed journey across the Libyan Sea, leading to tragedies such as a sunken fishing trawler that killed at least 700 in 2023.

Greek authorities recently rescued 20 migrants and recovered four bodies from a vessel in distress south of Crete. Dozens of others are believed missing.

Each rescue underscores the same brutal reality: The crossing is a gamble with lives.

The route to Crete is significantly longer and more perilous than the short trip from Turkey to nearby Greek islands. It requires larger vessels capable of navigating open sea for days and a different operational response from Frontex, including bigger patrol boats and expanded aerial surveillance.

Standing beside a drone at Tympaki airfield on Crete, Mariusz Kawczynski, a senior Frontex operations official, said the technology was indispensable.

“This asset is of critical importance,” he said. “There is no substitute in modern technology to have eyes for Europe of the threats that are coming to our borders.”

Georgios Pyliaros, head of Frontex operations in Greece and Cyprus, said the bad weather led to an expected seasonal lull in activity in January and February, but the agency expects increased crossings in the spring.

“If we take into consideration what happened in the last two or three years, we will have some increase in the following months, for sure,” Pyliaros said.

The surge in Crete last year hardened political positions in Athens. Greece temporarily suspended asylum claims from migrants arriving via the Libya route for three months, scrapped certain amnesty provisions and introduced mandatory imprisonment for asylum seekers whose claims are rejected.

The EU also is taking a tougher line, with new bloc-wide migration rules starting in June aimed at stricter border screening and faster deportations.

Frontex’s standing corps is set to reach 10,000 officers by the end of the year — double the number employed in 2021 — reflecting the policy shift and expectations of sustained pressure along key routes.

A war-tracking project at Sweden’s Uppsala University recorded 61 active conflicts globally in 2024 — the highest number since World War II — including expanding militant activity in western Africa, a major driver of displacement.

The International Organization for Migration, a United Nations agency, estimates at least 2,185 people died or went missing in the Mediterranean in 2025. The agency said 606 migrant deaths already had been recorded in the Mediterranean as of Feb. 24, warning that limited access to search-and-rescue information means the true toll is likely higher.

“The continued loss of life on migration routes is a global failure we cannot accept as normal,” IOM Director General Amy Pope said. “These deaths are not inevitable.”
