Carrie Underwood Fires Back After ‘American Idol’ Crowd Boos Her
Carrie Underwood isn’t backing down from the boos — she’s leaning into them.
During American Idol’s “Hollywood Week: Music City Takeover” episodes, the Season 4 winner-turned-judge clashed with the live Nashville audience more than once.
Her constructive criticism didn’t always land well — and the crowd made sure she knew it. Underwood, for her part, didn’t seem fazed.
Unbothered by the Crowd
“Boo me. I don’t care,” Underwood fired back via X on Monday (March 2), making it clear she wasn’t losing sleep over the reaction.
The tension built throughout Hollywood Week, which was filmed in Nashville this season. At one point, Underwood even predicted the response before offering her critique.

“You guys are gonna boo me. You’re gonna boo me,” she told the crowd ahead of feedback for contestant Mor, who performed an original song. “It’s coming. Bring it on. I love it! Your boos are feeding me.”
Underwood argued that singing original material at that stage of the competition was a gamble — especially with a full band behind him.
“In a room like this, for you to bring an original song with that incredible band sitting behind you twiddling their thumbs, I feel like it was a missed opportunity,” she said.
Despite her lukewarm assessment, Mor ultimately advanced to the next round.
Luke Steps In
Fellow judge Luke Bryan jumped in during one stretch of heavy booing to defend Underwood.
“She only won this. She knows,” Bryan reminded the audience, referencing Underwood’s 2005 American Idol victory.

The comment didn’t quiet the crowd entirely, prompting Underwood to draw a firm boundary.
“You’re not included in the discussions,” she told the audience as the noise continued. Later, she doubled down on social media.
“Singing original music is SUCH a gamble at this stage in the competition. Don’t. Waste. The. Band,” she wrote via X. “Mor’s voice and previous audition kept him in. I wanna hear his original music after he’s a big star!”
Underwood even teased the backlash before the episodes aired, writing on Feb. 16, “Spoiler alert…I get booed A LOT from our Hollywood Week audience @AmericanIdol.”
If the crowd thought the boos would rattle her, they may have underestimated the former winner.

Underwood joined the judging panel alongside Bryan and Lionel Richie, stepping in after Katy Perry’s departure in 2024.
And if Hollywood Week proved anything, it’s that she’s not afraid to stand her ground — even when the audience disagrees.
20 Things Carrie Underwood Has Done Since Winning ‘American Idol’
Carrie Underwood has been, well, busy since winning Season 4 of American Idol in 2005. Since the confetti fell, the country singer has released nine albums and embarked on seven tours. She’s also tried her hand at acting and launched a handful of businesses.
Over the years she’s become one of the biggest success stories to come out of the show, winning countless awards and amassing a staggering net worth of over $100 million.

Mark DeRosa sets USA rotation for WBC; Logan Webb to start G1
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — San Francisco Giants ace Logan Webb will start Game 1 of the World Baseball Classic for Team USA when it takes on Brazil in pool play Friday, manager Mark DeRosa said Monday.
Two-time American League Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal will pitch Game 2 against Britain. National League Cy Young winner Paul Skenes is set to face Mexico in Game 3.
“Yeah, it’s set up,” DeRosa said after Team USA’s first workout. “There’s obviously guardrails for the tournament … pitch count-wise, but there’s also guardrails for guys having to throw on certain days to get ready for their team’s Opening Day.”
New York Mets starter Nolan McLean is scheduled for Game 4 against Italy but is currently fighting a cold. He’s still in Port St. Lucie, Florida, where the Mets train. It’s not yet known whether DeRosa will have to make a change to his plan.
“He’s down there right now, and we’ll kind of reassess that day to day,” DeRosa said.
DeRosa wouldn’t reveal his batting order but indicated he’ll be able to go lefty/righty all the way down, with platoon opportunities in center field where Pete Crow-Armstrong and Byron Buxton will share time.
Team USA first gathered in Arizona on Sunday, holding a team dinner before playing in exhibition games Tuesday and Wednesday. Pool play starts Friday in Houston.
New York Yankees and Team USA captain Aaron Judge — who spoke to the team at dinner Sunday night — had trouble finding the right words to describe the stars who will attempt to avenge their loss to Japan in the 2023 finals.
“I wouldn’t even call it an all-star team,” Judge said with a smile. “This team is a lot of great players, a lot of greatness in the room, and it’s cool to see us kind of jumping in on the first day already.”
The excitement that revolved around the Olympics, combined with players’ gratitude toward military members, has players feeling even more pride in wearing their country’s jersey.
“Several of us probably have people who serve in the military or people we know that serve in the military,” Judge said. “And that was the first thing I thought of was there’s individuals out there that have sacrificed everything for this country to allow me to have my wife safe at home and my daughter safe at home, and I get a chance to come out here and play a kids’ game.”
Skenes and reliever Griffin Jax went to the Air Force Academy. It was one of the first things that came up when DeRosa invited Skenes to join the team.
“‘I want to do this for every serviceman and [servicewoman] that protects our freedom,'” DeRosa recalled Skenes saying.
“At the end of the day, that’s all that needs to be said. There’s something very special about representing your country.”
The men’s hockey gold medal game aired in clubhouses at spring training last month, adding even more hype for the WBC.
“People are super excited,” first baseman Bryce Harper said. “Everybody watched the Olympics and saw what the women’s and men’s team did winning gold. I was glued to the TV for those two, three weeks. So, I think it’s definitely a stepping-stone into what we’re doing right now.
“Hopefully, we can kind of do the same thing.”
Skenes will start Team USA’s exhibition game against the Giants on Tuesday. He’ll be followed by Chicago Cubs lefty Matthew Boyd, Seattle Mariners reliever Gabe Speier, Yankees righty David Bednar and San Diego Padres flamethrower Mason Miller. Another set of pitchers will throw Wednesday against the Colorado Rockies before the team takes off for Houston.
DeRosa summed up his feelings on the stacked U.S. roster.
“It’s a field of dreams, to be honest with you,” he said.
Notorious cartel leader “El Mencho” is buried in a golden casket in Mexico
The leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel was buried Monday in a shiny golden casket with enormous flower wreaths and a large military presence in the state that gave name to one of Mexico’s most powerful cartels.
A federal official confirmed that Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias “El Mencho,” was buried in a cemetery in Zapopan, a suburb of Guadalajara, Mexico’s second-largest city. Dozens of people accompanied the funeral procession, many carrying black umbrellas on a sunny day and with a band playing Mexican regional music known as banda.
The official who discussed the location requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case. The Attorney General’s Office declined to confirm the location of El Mencho’s burial for “security reasons.”
There had been stepped up security since Sunday around a funeral home where large flower wreaths had been arriving without a name. Some did include the image of a rooster in flowers and Oseguera Cervantes was sometimes called the “Lord of the Roosters.”
Almost all of the flowers were sent anonymously. There were so many that five trucks were required to take them to the cemetery, a local journalist told AFP. Earlier, eight people in black, presumably Oseguera’s family members, rode in two cars that followed the white hearse with his remains to the graveyard.
Refugio Ruiz / AP
The Mexican army killed Oseguera Cervantes just over a week ago while attempting to capture him. Oseguera Cervantes, who had a $15 million U.S. bounty on his head, died from multiple bullet wounds, according to the death certificate obtained by The Associated Press.
A crucifix, religious candles and a handwritten psalm were found in Oseguera Cervante’s home after the operation. Mexican authorities said they tracked one of his romantic partners to the hideout.
The killing set off violence in some 20 states. The death certificate fits with a description of the operation to capture Oseguera Cervantes given by Defense Secretary Ricardo Trevilla, who had said that the cartel leader and two bodyguards had been badly wounded in a gunfight with soldiers outside a home in Tapalpa, Jalisco. The three died en route to a hospital.
The certificate specified that Oseguera Cervantes had bullet wounds to his chest, abdomen and legs.
His body was taken to Mexico City where an autopsy was performed and then the body was turned over to his family on Saturday, the Attorney General’s Office said in a brief statement.
The death certificate also notes that Oseguera Cervantes was to be buried, standard practice in cases of violent deaths to allow for additional forensic evidence to be gathered if needed in the future. The document did not say where the burial would take place.
Authorities’ security concerns surrounding the burial location are well founded. Oseguera Cervantes’ killing set off retaliation by the cartel in numerous states. More than 70 people died between the military operation and the violence that followed. The government has said that security operations continue against other high-ranking members of the cartel.
It customary for an air of mystery to surround the burials of drug lords in Mexico, something their supporters take advantage of to try to elevate them to legend. Within hours of El Mencho’s death there were already ballads, known as narcocorridos, written about his killing.
In Culiacan, in neighboring Sinaloa state, home to a cartel of the same name, there is a cemetery known for its luxury crypts and mausoleums for one-time kingpins like Ignacio Coronel – an old associate of El Mencho – and Arturo Beltrán Leyva.
There was the drug lord who was famously killed twice, Nazario Moreno, leader of the violent and pseudo religious Knights Templar cartel who authorities said was killed in 2010 only to kill him for real in 2014.
Sometimes the bodies disappear, like in the case of Heriberto Lazcano, leader of the fearsome Zetas, whose body was stolen in 2012. Or they die under bizarre circumstances, like Amado Carrillo Fuentes, “Lord of the Skies,” who died in a botched plastic surgery.
