China to unveil priorities for coming 5 years at major annual political meeting

0

BEIJING — BEIJING (AP) — China’s ceremonial legislature is set to meet Thursday, where it will unveil the country’s policy direction and economic goals for the coming years.

The meeting is held in Beijing, where the National People’s Congress and its advisory body gather. The National People’s Congress will ratify new laws decided by China’s Communist Party leadership. While the near 3,000 member body technically votes, the vote is always almost unanimous.

Also meeting is the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, an advisory body composed of elite members of Chinese society, from businessmen to athletes. They also include representatives from China’s minority groups, but the body has little power on issues of public policy.

The gathering of these two bodies is called the Two Sessions. The political meetings have changed under President Xi Jinping’s rule, with tighter scripts and less scope for debate.

“A long, long time ago, it was a venue for policy deliberation,” and even controversial things, said Alfred Wu, a professor of public policy at the National University of Singapore. “Now it’s very much become a showcase, propaganda.”

The National People’s Congress is when the Chinese premier announces the country’s GDP targets and other economic targets for the year.

This year, observers are waiting for details for the 15th five-year plan, of which the government had revealed a draft in October. It is expected to be focused on building tech prowess and self-sufficiency.

China issues five-year plans to direct its economy, a legacy of its historical approach when it had a planned economy.

The Chinese economy remains sluggish, with high youth unemployment, weak housing prices and sagging domestic consumption. It also faces a trade war with the U.S., which has leveraged tariffs on all Chinese goods.

Experts have said China will have to strike a tough balance between its goals of boosting its tech manufacturing, such as in robotics, renewable energy and AI, and boosting domestic consumption as many ordinary people are feeling the pinch. Tech supply chains are narrow and the trickle-down effect is less pronounced.

China is likely to drop its headline growth target to a record low, predicted Neil Thomas and Lobsang Tsering, policy experts at the Asia Society. It will be significant as a step in a “shift from high-speed to high-quality growth,” they wrote.

China’s legislature dismissed 19 members last week, after a highly publicized removal of two of its most senior generals in January.

Now, only one member remains of the powerful Central Military Commission, which controls the military, but policy experts say they do not expect any personnel announcements in the upcoming Two Sessions. Observers like to closely watch attendance for any signs of possible purges, however.

Xi Jinping has removed possibly up to 100 senior officials in the People’s Liberation Army in the past four years, according to new research from the Center for Strategic Studies, with the most prominent being General Zhang Youxia in January.

Yet, there is likely no great rush from the leadership to find a replacement.

“I don’t think they’re particularly worried about this,” said Wu of National University Singapore. For example, he said, Wang Yi became foreign minister again after stepping down from the job initially because of the high-profile removal of Qin Gang, previously his replacement.

‘Marshals’ Did Monican Dutton – and ‘Yellowstone’ Fans

0

You’d have thought the creative team behind Yellowstone and Marshals would have learned their lesson.

Nope. The biggest mistake in franchise history just repeated itself. You bet this article contains spoilers about Ep. 1 of Marshals on CBS.

  • The series premiere of Marshals was on Sunday (March 1).
  • Luke Grimes returns as Kayce Dutton, who joins an elite team of U.S. Marshals in Montana.
  • Actor Brecken Merrill (Tate Dutton), Gil Birmingham (Thomas Rainwater) and Mo Brings Plenty (Mo) are three Yellowstone characters announced as cast members of Marshals.

READ MORE: Here’s How to Watch Marshals, the Yellowstone Spinoff Based on Kayce Dutton

Before beginning, I’d like to make it clear that, overall, I felt the premiere was strong. Network procedurals are often clumsy to start, but Marshals really wasn’t.

The action was captivating and the dialogue felt as natural as possible, given the premier’s larger goal of introducing a half dozen new characters to us while simultaneously trying to remind us how Season 5 of Yellowstone ended.

My criticism is laser-focused on the handling of Monica, as played by Kelsey Asbille.

What Happened to Monica from Yellowstone?

Hopefully you watched Ep. 1 of Marshals, because I’m about to reveal what happened to Monica Dutton.

Short version: she died in the space between the end of Yellowstone and the beginning of Marshals.

It takes a few minutes for viewers to get all the details, but eventually we learn that she was diagnosed with cancer and died fairly quickly. I say quickly because it would seem about one year passed between the two shows and her gravesite indicates the burial wasn’t fresh (more plants than dirt etc …).

Her death wasn’t too surprising. Monica / Asbille was absent from the show’s trailer and all promotional events. Additionally, a clip from the official trailer featured a body being covered up by a sheet.

Zoom in on the nightstand to find a half dozen or so pill bottles. If you squinted, you knew whoever died in Kayce’s bed was very sick.

The creative team explained Monica’s death as a necessary turning point to get Kayce Dutton to re-join a law enforcement agency so soon after he gave up the badge to protect his family at the end of Yellowstone S5.

This makes sense. Sure, one could argue a more creative solution that involved Monica is out there, but I couldn’t think of one …

How Marshals Did Monica Dirty

… at first. Why rush Kayce’s commitment to the Marshals? A short Season 1 could have featured a recruitment period and his emotional torment. The show did this anyway, but it was all boiled down to one episode.

Then, Monica dies — could you imagine the buzz and the cliff hanger! — and a switch flips. He’s out to avenge her death as much as he is to bring peace to Montana. Perhaps he’s chasing the same villain across two seasons. It works!

Kevin Costner‘s failure to reach an agreement with Paramount led to John Dutton’s off screen death during Season 5 of Yellowstone. That was disappointing, but understandable. The footage wasn’t there to kill him on camera, and the show could hardly switch actors at that point.

Producers had time and a willing Kelsey Asbille ahead of Marshals. In fact, Luke Grimes recalls having to tell his friend and on-screen wife she’d been fired.

“In true Kelsey fashion, she handled it like a pro and totally understood. She’s going to do just fine,” he told TV Insider.

Never mind that it’s absolutely wild that he had to make that phone call. Grimes is being a good soldier in saying he understands the decision, and to a certain extend Asbille is too, via radio silence on social media.

So I’ll say what Yellowstone fans are thinking: The decision to nix Monica is disrespectful to the actor, the character and fans who learned to love her over five seasons of Yellowstone.

“Learned to love” is the key phrase there. Early on, Monica was kind of whiney, and Asbille’s acting was a bit flat.

By Seasons 4 and 5 that wasn’t the case. She brought heart and warmth to a show that was at times cold and increasingly abrasive. Kayce and Monica were couple goals by the end.

Will Monica Appear in Flashbacks on Marshals?

There was another clip from the trailer that shows Kayce turning to acknowledge a shrouded woman approaching behind him. The form looked like Monica’s, although you can’t see the face.

Given what we now know — and given Taylor Sheridan’s penchant for flashbacks in the Yellowstone franchise — it seems possible Asbille joins the show as a spirit to help guide Kayce.

Then again, nobody is teasing that this could happen, and if the promotion of Marshals to date has taught us anything, it’s that this new show is allergic to surprises.

Sources: Braves’ Profar faces 162-game ban, 2nd PED violation

0

Atlanta Braves designated hitter Jurickson Profar is facing a 162-game suspension after testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug for the second time in the past year, sources told ESPN on Tuesday.

Profar, 33, would be the sixth player to receive a 162-game ban for PED use since Major League Baseball increased the penalty for two-time offenders to a full season in 2014. He will forfeit the entirety of his $15 million salary and will be ineligible for the postseason. Profar also will be ineligible for the upcoming World Baseball Classic, where he was set to represent the Netherlands, whose team includes players from his native Curacao.

According to multiple reports, he intends to ask MLB’s players’ union to file a grievance to baseball’s independent arbitrator, Martin F. Scheinman, to appeal any discipline.

The loss of Profar is a significant blow to the Braves, who have already lost starting pitchers Spencer Schwellenbach and Hurston Waldrep to elbow injuries, as they try to rebound from a 76-86 season. The 2025 season started inauspiciously as well with Profar’s 80-game suspension on March 31 for human chorionic gonadotropin, a hormone typically made during pregnancy that can encourage testosterone production.

Following that suspension, Profar said in a statement that “it is because of my deep love and respect for this game that I would never knowingly do anything to cheat it.” In a statement, at the time, the Braves said they were “surprised and extremely disappointed” but that they “fully support the program and are hopeful Jurickson will learn from this experience.”

Atlanta signed Profar to a three-year, $42 million contract in January 2025 after he had a career year with the San Diego Padres. His suspension came following the fourth game of the season and, after returning in early July, he hit .245/.353/.434 with 14 home runs and 43 RBIs while playing left field.

Following sports hernia surgery in the offseason, Profar was expected to shift to DH and bat toward the top of the Braves’ lineup — perhaps in the No. 2 hole behind former National League MVP Ronald Acuna Jr. While Atlanta has ample options to fill out its lineup — the eventual return of catcher Sean Murphy will allow reigning Rookie of the Year Drake Baldwin to spend some time in a hitting-only role — Profar’s absence puts even more of an onus on first baseman Matt Olson, third baseman Austin Riley, second baseman Ozzie Albies, center fielder Michael Harris II and free agent acquisition Mike Yastrzemski to produce.

Once the No. 1 prospect in baseball, Profar debuted at 19 years old with Texas and spent more time on the injured list than in the field during his first five seasons. After bouncing among Oakland, San Diego and Colorado, he returned to the Padres in 2024 and hit .280/.380/.459 and set career bests in home runs (24) and RBIs (85).

PED suspensions of major leaguers have decreased in recent years, with only two last year (Profar and Philadelphia reliever Jose Alvarado) and five in the past three years. Free agent outfielder Max Kepler was suspended 80 games in January for a first-time offense. The last player suspended 162 games was Milwaukee reliever J.C. Mejia in September 2023. He has not played affiliated baseball since. Others with 162-game penalties include Robinson Cano (2020), Francis Martes (2020), Marlon Byrd (2016) and Jenrry Mejia (2015), who later tested positive a third time and remains the only player banned for life for PED violations.

Profar has one year and $15 million remaining on his contract after this season.

What we know about the U.S. service members killed in the Iran war

0

Four of six U.S. service members killed in the Iran war died when a drone struck a port in Kuwait on Sunday, U.S. Army Reserve Command said Tuesday.

The U.S. government has said six U.S. service members have been killed in the military operation that started early Saturday with U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran. Iran responded by launching missiles and drones in nearby countries.

Four Army reservists died when a drone struck Port Shuabia, Kuwait, Army Reserve Command said.

They were identified Tuesday as:

  • Capt. Cody A. Khork, 35, of Winter Haven, Fla. Khork enlisted in the National Guard in 2009 and was commissioned as a military police officer in the Army Reserve in 2014, the military said.

  • Sgt. 1st Class Nicole M. Amor, 39, of White Bear Lake, Minn. Amor joined the National Guard in 2005 and transferred to the Army Reserve in 2006, Army Reserve Command said. She deployed to Kuwait and Iraq in 2019.

All four were assigned to the 103rd Sustainment Command based in Des Moines, the command said.

The identities and the circumstances of the other two killed U.S. service members have not been released.

In addition to the deaths, 18 other U.S. service members have suffered serious injuries, a U.S. official told NBC News on Monday.

“We honor our fallen Heroes, who served fearlessly and selflessly in defense of our nation. Their sacrifice, and the sacrifices of their families, will never be forgotten,” Lt. Gen. Robert Harter, Chief of Army Reserve and commanding general U.S. Army Reserve Command, said in a statement.

The U.S. and Israel launched attacks in Iran around 1:15 a.m. ET Saturday, using “precision munitions launched from air, land and sea” and one-way drones, Central Command has said.

Iran’s Red Crescent said nearly 800 people have been killed in Israeli and American strikes.

Iran responded to the U.S. and Israeli strikes by launching missiles and drones at targets in surrounding nations. Eleven people have been killed in Israel, officials said, and deaths were reported in the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Bahrain.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said Tuesday that it launched 230 attack drones on a U.S. base in Erbil, Iraq, and the U.S. Ali Al Salem and Arifjan bases in Kuwait, semi-official Iranian news agency Tasnim reported.

The military action could last weeks, President Donald Trump said Monday. “We projected four to five weeks, but we have capability to go far longer than that,” the presdient said then.

Trump and other administration officials have said that the U.S. attacked Iran because of an imminent threat and after nuclear talks failed to reach an agreement.

Some members of Congress have questioned that assessment and Trump’s power to attack Iran without seeking approval from Congress. Democrats and some Republicans plan to force a war powers vote that would restrict Trump’s ability to carry out further attacks in Iran.

Iran’s Red Crescent has said nearly 800 people were killed in Israeli and American strikes. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was also killed, Iranian state media has confirmed.

Use DraftKings promo code to get $200 bonus bets by targeting 76ers-Spurs, North Carolina-Clemson on Tuesday

With 12 ranked versus unranked college basketball games on Tuesday, the madness of March could start before conference play begins, creating plenty of intriguing matchups to use the current DraftKings promo code, which gives new users $200 in bonus bets if your first $5 bet wins. Two of SportsLine’s top experts have locked in their college basketball best bets from a pair of ranked vs. unranked matchups, including a pick on No. 17 North Carolina vs. Clemson (+2.5).

Tuesday isn’t only about college basketball, though, with a 10-game NBA slate as well. The SportsLine Projection Model has found value in one of the top NBA matchups for Tuesday NBA best bets, backing the San Antonio Spurs to cover as 7.5-point favorites against the Philadelphia 76ers. The Spurs are coming off a loss to the Knicks on Sunday, but they had won 11 straight before that result. Claim the latest DraftKings promo code, where new users get $200 in bonus bets if your first $5+ bet wins

Check out our DraftKings promo code review for full details.

The SportsLine Projection Model simulates every NBA game 10,000 times and has returned well over $10,000 in betting profit for $100 players on its top-rated NBA picks over the past eight-plus seasons. The model entered Week 20 on a sizzling 41-18 roll on top-rated NBA spread picks dating back to last season. Anyone following its NBA betting advice at sportsbooks and on betting apps could have seen huge returns.

Tuesday best bets at DraftKings Sportsbook

  • Clemson vs. North Carolina: Over 142.5 total points (-110)
  • Spurs (-7.5) vs. 76ers (-105)
  • Nebraska (+1.5) vs. UCLA (-115)

Combining the three picks into a Tuesday parlay at DraftKings would result in a payout of +664 (risk $100 to win $665, odds subject to change). Bet it at DraftKings here:

Clemson vs. North Carolina: Over 142.5 total points (-110)

“The Tigers have steadied the ship, it seems, after a four-game losing streak and now face North Carolina with double-bye ACC Tournament implications,” SportsLine expert Chip Patterson said. “With Senior Night festivities coming for Seth Trimble, I’m expecting a high-energy game from the Tar Heels and if recent series history is any indication, Clemson has been willing to speed up its game to match North Carolina’s pace. The five-game sample set between Hubert Davis and Brad Brownell is 3-2 in the Tar Heels’ favor as Clemson has won the last two, but the real key is that four of those five games have gotten to 150 points or more and the average across the set is 149.2 points per game.” Back the Over at DraftKings here:

Spurs (-7.5) vs. 76ers (-105)

The Spurs went undefeated in February, winning all 11 of their games before a 114-89 loss to the Knicks on Sunday. Six of those 11 victories came on the road, as San Antonio enters the final game of a five-game road trip against Eastern Conference teams. Victor Wembanyama continues to showcase his domination and versatility, creating the paint and scoring from beyond the 3-point line, averaging 23.7 points, 11.2 rebounds and 2.9 blocks per game this season. He had 25 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks in the loss to the Knicks. Meanwhile, the 76ers are without Joel Embiid (oblique), and although the 76ers are six games over .500, they are just 16-15 overall and 14-17 against the spread at home this season. The model projects the Spurs to cover in 69% of simulations, one of the highest of Tuesday’s NBA slate. Back the Spurs to cover at DraftKings here:

Nebraska (+1.5) vs. UCLA (-115)

“Nebraska is forecasted to be the No. 3 seed in the NCAA tournament, and UCLA is looking to be a 9th seed in the South,” SportsLine expert Micah Roberts said. “It’s Big Ten basketball in Los Angeles, and Nebraska has been there all weekend, beating USC, 82-67, Saturday as a 4-point favorite, and now they ride a three-game win streak. UCLA comes off a loss at Minnesota, and they’ve lost three of their past five games. Nebraska has been playing college basketball at an elite level and sits tied for second in the Big Ten at 14-4. Overall, Nebraska is 25-4. Nebraska should probably be a 4-point favorite here.” Back Nebraska to cover at DraftKings here:
