Kenny Rogers became one of the most enduring superstars in country music history, but he was a middle-aged man looking for an unlikely comeback when he scored his first No. 1 country hit in 1977.
What Were Kenny Rogers’ Early Days in Music Like?
Rogers was born in 1938, and he launched his career in 1958 with a minor single called “That Crazy Feeling.”
He went on to stints in a jazz band called the Bobby Doyle Three and a folk group called the New Christy Minstrels before splitting off to form the First Edition.
That group gave Rogers his first taste of mainstream success, scoring hits on both the rock and country charts with songs including “Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In),” “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town,” “Reuben James” and “Something’s Burning.”
But by the time the group disbanded in 1976, Rogers was just a few years shy of 40 and left to start all over again as a solo artist.
How Did Kenny Rogers Launch His Solo Career?
He scored some smaller successes at country radio with his first solo album, Love Lifted Me, but it wasn’t until Rogers released his self-titled second album in 1977 that he established himself as a solo country star.
Rogers hit No. 1 on Billboard‘s Hot Country Songs chart on April 2, 1977, with “Lucille,” a plaintive barroom song about a man whose wife has left him with “four hungry children and a crop in the field.”
Recorded at Nashville’s American Studio on Aug. 5, 1976, “Lucille” also became one of Rogers’ biggest hits overseas, hitting No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart the week of June 18, 1977.
What Are Some of Kenny Rogers’ Biggest Hits?
He’d go on to become one of the breakout musical superstars of the ’70s and ’80s, landing a long string of country hits that included “Daytime Friends,” “The Gambler,” “She Believes in Me,” “Coward of the County,” “Lady,” “Islands in the Stream” and many more.
Rogers sustained his run of No. 1 hits all the way through 1999, scoring his final chart-topper with “Buy Me a Rose.”

Kenny Rogers developed a taste for fine living early in his success. His ultra-lavish mansion in Bel Air, Calif., an estate called Lionsgate, was opulent even by celebrity standards. The 11-bedroom, 17-bathroom home totals 23,988 square feet of space, and it sits on 1.63 acres of some of the most expensive real estate in California.
The lavish interior includes a master suite that encompasses more than 3,000 square feet, three separate living rooms, seven fireplaces, a billiards room, a formal study, a private 12-seat theater with leather seats, a climate-controlled wine room that opens onto a saltwater pool, three steam showers and a large dry sauna. The property also features an outdoor glass elevator that leads to a large ballroom party space with an attached guest suite and a professional-sized gym.
The exterior of the house is just as lavish, including an outdoor living area with heated floors and a fully equipped bar, a tennis court with stadium lighting and a viewing area, a hot tub and extensive landscaping. Realtor.com calls Lionsgate the “most prestigious luxury estate” in Bel Air, boasting “possibly the best views in Los Angeles.”
According to Business Insider, Rogers purchased the estate in the 1970s, and he added the lions to the gate and christened the home Lionsgate. He sold it in 1983 for $5.8 million, according to Variety, and the property most recently sold in 2015 for a staggering $46.25 million.

Dutch authorities on Thursday showed off a recovered priceless gold 2,500-year-old helmet from Romania that was stolen last year during a brazen heist in the Netherlands.
Flanked by balaclava-clad police officers, a spokesman for Dutch prosecutors unveiled the 5th-century BC golden Helmet of Cotofenesti and two of the three gold bracelets stolen in January 2025.
Dutch police officer Corien Fahner said: “the Cotofenesti helmet and two Dacian gold bracelets have been returned and we are delighted to be able to announce this.”
The search for the third bracelet is ongoing, said Fahner.
The theft had sparked outrage in Romania and prompted a huge police search.
A gang of robbers used firework bombs to break into the Drents Museum in the northern Netherlands in January 2025, and smashed display cases inside.
Three men are on trial for the theft but have largely remained silent in court.
Museum director Robert van Langh told reporters that there was a tiny bit of damage to the helmet, “very difficult even to see.”
The helmet can be “completely restored to its original state,” said van Langh, who added that the two bracelets were in “perfect condition.”

Under huge pressure from Romania, Dutch authorities have made multiple attempts to convince the suspects to tell them where the treasures are stashed.
Police offered to halve the sentence of one suspect if he revealed the location of the helmet.
An undercover officer posing as a criminal mastermind reportedly offered another suspect 400,000 euros ($420,000) to tell him where the booty was hidden.
Police had also offered a reward of 100,000 euros for information leading to the helmet’s recovery.
“People are devastated”
The theft and the search for the Dacian artefacts has gripped the Netherlands and regularly makes headline news.
“This is a dark day,” Harry Tupan, general director of the Drents Museum, said at the time. “In its 170-year existence, there has never been such a major incident.”
In the aftermath of the theft, then Romanian prime minister Marcel Ciolacu voiced outrage that “priceless objects” had been stolen and was considering claiming “unprecedented damages”.
“You have no idea what the impact of this is on the Romanian community,” Romanian cultural journalist Claudia Marcu, who has lived in the Netherlands since 2003, told public broadcaster NOS.
“When I heard about the theft I thought: for the Dutch this would be like (Rembrandt’s) ‘The Night Watch’ being stolen. People are devastated.”
The Dutch government had set aside 5.7 million euros ($6.5 million) for a likely payout following the brazen theft.
The pieces were on loan from a Bucharest museum, whose head was promptly sacked for lending the works out in the first place.
Dutch museums and galleries have been targeted by thieves in the past — including in November when works by artist Andy Warhol were taken, as well as a Van Gogh stolen from a museum in 2020.
The heists have prompted calls for better security to protect valuable artworks.
Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Toiu described the find as “extraordinary news.”
“It is so important not to give up when something is so valuable to multiple generations,” said the minister.
“Indiana Jones of the Art World”
Dutch art detective Arthur Brand had confirmed the find to AFP hours earlier on Thursday.
“It’s amazing. It’s the best news we could have got,” said Brand.
Brand said he and police have been working their contacts to persuade the alleged robbers to hand over the helmet in exchange for a more lenient punishment.
“We were pretty sure it had not been melted down because there were only four days between the robbery and the arrests,” said Brand. “It’s a fantastic job by the Dutch police.”
Brand, nicknamed the “Indiana Jones of the Art World”, has made headlines around the globe for his high-profile recoveries of stolen pieces of art.
In July 2025, he recovered a priceless trove of stolen documents from the 15th to the 19th century, including several UNESCO-listed archives from the world’s first multinational corporation.
A few months before that, Brand helped Dutch police crack the case of the mysterious disappearance of a Brueghel painting from a Polish museum over 50 years ago.
Brand’s other accomplishments include returning a Vincent van Gogh painting to a museum in 2023, more than three years after it was stolen.
In 2022, he returned a Roman statue that had been stolen from Musee du Pays Chatillonnais in 1973. He also recovered Salvador Dali’s “Adolescence,” a Picasso painting and “Hitler’s Horses,” sculptures that once stood outside the Nazi leader’s Berlin chancellery.
In 2017, the art detective told CBS News that he’s brokered deals with terrorist groups, the mafia and a slew of shady characters in order to track down pieces on the black market.
“On one hand you have the police, insurance companies, collectors, and on the other hand you have the criminals, the art thieves and the forgers,” Brand said. “So there are two different kind of worlds, and they do not communicate. So I put myself in the middle.”

When Marshals was first announced, Yellowstone fans assumed that Kayce and Monica’s story would continue together. Their East Camp ranch was protected thanks to a series-ending deal the youngest Dutton son cut with Thomas Rainwater and the Broken Rock Reservation. During Season 4 and Season 5, Monica became a real source of strength and inspiration on the show.
Sure, she was a bit hard to love early on. That all changed by the finale. Asbille and Grimes’ on-screen chemistry was undeniable and Tate — their on-screen son played by Brecken Merrill — seemed most comfortable during scenes with his fictional parents.
As the new series drew closer, more actors were announced for Marshals but Asbille was never one of them. Executives and creators never addressed this. Instead they used the mystery to promote the premiere and media played a long to a certain degree. Instead, pre-show interviews and red carpet events suspiciously worked around the elephant in the room.
During the premiere, we learn that Monica died within the last year after a battle with cancer, likely caused by mining on the Broken Rock Reservation. Her death was shocking on two levels.
First, it was just surprising to see such a major character die. Second, it was also stunning to learn of another off-screen death so soon after John Dutton (Kevin Costner) was killed off between seasons of Yellowstone. Fans hated that plot twist — why do it again?
Why Did Monica Die On Marshals?
The first explanation for why Monica died on Marshals came from showrunner Spencer Hudnut who told EW they needed a reason for Kayce to reverse his position on joining law enforcement. This made sense to a certain degree; at the end of Yellowstone he chose family over badge and made a big deal of it. Why would he pivot?
Killing Monica seemed like a scorched earth solution to the problem, but later Hudnut would tell the Hollywood Reporter that Asbille wasn’t available.
At least that’s what fans thought he said. The actual quote was quite different and — with this new information — quite telling:
“Then, truthfully, as we were trying to figure it out, Monica was not one of the ingredients that was available to me.”
Odd phrasing, right? Hudnut talks about Asbille’s character Monica as if she’s just another jar in the spice rack, not a human making choices. Fans — and to a small degree, the Dutton Rules podcast — twisted this to indicate she didn’t make herself available, due to another acting gig, personal life etc … That’s not what he said.
The Real Reason Marshals Killed Off Monica Dutton
If you’re someone who believes lawyers ruin everything you’ll hate this. Puck’s Matthew Belloni has led the way with Yellowstone universe scoops and he suggests Monica was killed over streaming rights.
Yellowstone fans know that Seasons 1-5 stream on Peacock, not Paramount+ like every other Taylor Sheridan show. This weird little wrinkle is due to an agreement signed before the existence of P+.
As part of that deal, Belloni says, all continuations of the Yellowstone will also need to stream on Peacock. Paramount doesn’t want that so they needed to go to great lengths to ensure Marshals doesn’t feel like a Yellowstone continuation.
“Differentiation was partly why they killed her off in the pilot,” Belloni says.
This would also explain why the upcoming Dutton Ranch show featuring characters Beth and Rip moved from Montana to south Texas. If you recall, the couple had purchased land in Montana at the end of S5 Yellowstone but the new series finds them 1,500 miles away.

Many of this year’s group have made their marks for their respective sides last season, helping them win silverware as Arsenal beat Barcelona to win the UEFA Women’s Champions League, England retained their European Championship crown, Brazil won another Copa America Femenina, and some made some big moves as there was a record breaking transfer window over the summer.
But which players have done enough to land a place on ESPN’s list for 2026, and what makes them special?
With multiple teams and leagues around the world, you have to cast a wide net to find the best, so Yash Thakur examined and ranked the game’s youngest players with input from ESPN’s reporters in the Netherlands, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Africa, Asia and Australia.
What were the criteria?
While talent and potential played a big role in their rankings they weren’t the only factors considered. From an initial long list of 50 players, those who remain are the ones who best satisfied the main criteria: appearances at the highest level, consistent performance over a sustained period, and the potential to develop into a top-level footballer.
A sounding board composed of players, managers, journalists and fans was used before deciding on the final rankings. Personal preference also played a role.
Why did some players miss out?
Since the list was restricted to the top 21 players, some big stars naturally missed out. While their talent and potential is undeniable, injuries, lack of minutes, and inconsistencies in performances stopped them from making the final cut.
For example, England’s unlikely star at Euro 2025, Michelle Agyemang, had the world at her feet this summer, but unfortunately succumbed to an ACL injury early in the season; Japan international Maika Hamano had a brilliant start to the year but fell out of favor at Chelsea and eventually moved to Spurs on loan; while Bayern Munich‘s Alara Sehitler and Arsenal’s Smilla Holmberg are yet to fully establish themselves as starters at their respective clubs.

Camara joined Barcelona’s academy at the age of 15 and made her debut for the senior side in February 2025. This season, she has regularly stepped up into the starting XI and her versatility has allowed her to fill in at right back or center back without a tangible drop in quality.
A two-time U19 European Championship winner with Spain, she reads play well and is robust in her one-on-one duels, skilled at denying her opponents time and space on the ball. The timing of her challenges, decision making, and runs at such a young age make her seem far more experienced than she is, and she can impact things at both ends of the pitch.
In a veteran Barcelona defense, Camara fills an important role and she will surely become indispensable for both club and country.
One key stat: Camara has six assists to her name in Liga F this season, the second most by a defender behind teammate Mapi León (seven).
Jackson first showcased her talent on the global stage at the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in 2022, captaining the U.S. to the quarterfinals, and while she missed her penalty in that game, her character and class made an impact. Since then, she has grown into a fine defensive midfielder and started 23 of North Carolina Courage’s 26 games in the NWSL last season.
She exudes confidence on the ball, orchestrating play from the defensive third, and has impeccable range in her passing. Her accuracy and incisiveness, coupled with her defensive reading of the game, make her a key figure in both buildup and progression phases. Jackson’s excellent defensive positioning also helps her recover possession and disrupt opposition attacks.
Jackson might not be the flashiest player on the pitch, but she is the catalyst making everything tick.
One key stat: In 2025, Jackson attempted the third-most passes (1,194) and passes ending in the final third (619) in the NWSL — the third highest in both categories by any midfielder.
The younger sister of Chelsea winger Alyssa Thompson, Gisele caught the eye in the U.S.’s third-place finish at the U20 FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2024, while she made her debut for Angel City in the same year and went on to represent the senior USWNT side soon after.
She is lightning fast and can cover the space between the two boxes quickly; despite being a full back, she is an ultra-attacking player at her core who loves to run at defenders, twisting and turning her way into the opposition box. Her ability to produce an incisive final ball makes her a potential match-winner, and her decision making and defensive ability will only improve with more minutes under her belt.
Koga has transitioned well from youth to senior football to quickly become indispensable for club and country at a young age. She featured in all games for Japan in their 2025 SheBelieves Cup win, scoring a goal against the U.S. in the final, and recently joined Tottenham after an impressive year at Feyenoord.
At 5-foot-8, the defender is physically intimidating and robust in duels. Her excellent starting position, body shape and tenacity make her an excellent defender in the box, clearing and blocking everything that the opposition throw at her. She also reads the game brilliantly, tracks her markers, and has excellent timing in her challenges, allowing her to make vital recoveries.
On the ball, she brings composure and calm in the circulation phase, while she has the quality, range and execution to play passes through the opposition lines. With more minutes under her belt, Koga will surely cement herself as one of the best center backs around.
One key stat: Only Tottenham’s Clare Hunt (23) has blocked more shots than Koga (22) in the WSL this season.

Dragoni’s shock selection, at the age of 16, to represent Italy at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup showed how highly her technical quality and creativity were regarded. A transfer from Inter Milan to Barcelona that same year seemed a perfect fit as she has great vision, skillful footwork, incisive passing and can create dangerous opportunities for her teammates. But she has spent most of her time since 2024 on loan back in Italy with AS Roma.
An excellent ball carrier through midfield, Dragoni’s agility and sharp movements allow her to glide past incoming challenges and she loves to play quick exchanges in the final third, accelerating play and unlocking defenses. A real creative force, only time will tell if she is able to break into Barcelona’s long-term plans.
One key stat: Only Manuela Giugliano (13) and Evelyne Viens (eight) have more goal contributions for AS Roma in the Serie A Femminile than Dragoni (seven).

Her set-piece deliveries also tend to have the perfect bend and weight to them, which leads to high quality chances on a consistent basis.

Fiamma has emerged as a talismanic goal-scoring midfielder in a dwindling Atlético Madrid side. Consistently finding good positions in and around the penalty box, she covers every blade of the grass and is versatile enough to fill multiple roles across the midfield.
After moving to the Rojiblancas from Valencia ahead of the 2024-25 season, Fiamma’s creative output and end product have both improved. She is physically formidable, times her runs to perfection and has a thunderous shot to go with it. She’s also blessed with excellent vision to make a difference from set-pieces or open play.
Fiamma was involved in seven of Atlético’s 13 goals during the league phase of the UEFA Women’s Champions League this season, with her strike from the edge of the box against Bayern Munich helping her side earn a valuable draw.

Hutton is an orchestrator, someone who controls and dictates the tempo of the game. Her calmness, passing range and decision making in the buildup phases is almost peerless. The ball remains glued to her feet and her progressive nature means she can often take a touch under pressure and then use her spatial awareness to break through opposition lines. On the defensive side, her positioning is impeccable and doesn’t require her to jump into challenges; however, when she does, her timing is usually excellent.

Yohannes has been one of the most sought-after talents in women’s football in recent years. From what club she will join (OL Lyonnes from Ajax), to what country she will represent (USWNT over Netherlands), all eyes have been on her, and the 18-year-old midfielder plays with the vision and decisiveness of a veteran who merits that interest.
An attacking midfielder at her core, she has been used in a deeper role at OL Lyonnes this season, which has seen improvements in her off-ball work and passing ability. Generally, her passes have the perfect weight and timing on them to disrupt the opposition’s defensive block, and her vision and first touch are clearly a product of learning the game at a technical club like Ajax. She is also capable of testing the goalkeeper from any range, as she showed with a stunning halfway line goal vs. St. Pölten in the Women’s Champions League.
One key stat: Yohannes has three goals and four assists in the French Première Ligue this season, only four OL Lyonnes players have managed more (16 – Tabitha Chawinga; 10 – Melchie Dumornay; 8 — Vicki Becho and Korbin Schrader.

She has incredible pace and can ghost in behind the defensive lines in a split second, while she usually operates on the heels of the last defender and gets a lot of her goals from making those explosive runs. Her movement in and around the box is also brilliant, allowing her to lose her marker easily, and once free she can shoot from tight spaces, under pressure and with both feet. Indeed, her ability to get shots off quickly and with a variety of finishes make her a real goal-scoring threat.
As she continues to develop physically, she will only get better at her hold-up play, link-up play with her teammates and aerial ability.
One key stat: Schroder had the most goals (30) and the most goal contributions (39) in the Damallsvenskan last season.
Club: North Carolina Courage Country: Japan Age: 21
Matsubuko first gained attention for her performances with Japan’s U20 side — she played in two U20 FIFA Women’s World Cups, as Japan finished as runners up in 2022 and 2024, and scored three goals in the 2024 edition.
Her strengths include her ability to find space and, despite often starting as a central striker, she is dynamic and makes synchronized counter-movements to those of her teammates. That often means she’s in the right place at the right time to produce a variety of finishes, but she is just as good at dropping deep, playing quick exchanges and running in behind the defense.
She has excellent vision to play first-time passes or find her teammates in better positions, which makes her a threat when on the ball. Then, defensively, she doesn’t shy away from her pressing duties and is great at blocking passing lanes and denying opponents any time on the ball.
One key stat: Matsukubo finished second in goal contributions (15) and third in goals (11), was named as NWSL’s midfielder of the year in 2025 and became the youngest NWSL player to score a hat trick in the game against Bay FC.
Gaupset has been tipped for greatness for some time and was involved in all four goals (2 goals, 2 assists) for Norway against Iceland in their final group-stage game at Euro 2025.
She first grabbed headlines with some excellent performances for SK Brann in the UWCL, scoring crucial goals against OL Lyonnes in December 2023, and lit up the Norwegian Toppserien — Gaupset was the only player to hit the double digits for both goals and assists, finishing with second-highest number of assists (11) and third-highest goals (15) — last season before moving to Tottenham in the summer.
Gaupset’s quality shines through when she receives the ball deep and has the freedom to float across the pitch. Tanikawa was Japan’s standout star at the U17 Women’s World Cup in 2022, doing absolutely everything on the pitch, but 2024 was her true breakthrough season after signing for Bayern Munich and scoring 16 goals on loan at FC Rosengård to help them win the Swedish Damallsvenskan title.
The midfielder is now an indispensable part of Jose Barcala’s system at Bayern and is versatile enough to play in multiple positions, helping in build-up phases, ball progression and chance creation alike. Excellent with both feet, she has a deft touch and unrivalled vision, while her passes are played with the same finesse and accuracy as her deliveries from set pieces.

The Colombia international is an excellent ball carrier, with strong acceleration and a box of tricks in her repertoire. Her ability to bounce off challenges when driving forward with the ball makes her difficult to dispossess, while a crafty first touch and close control also allows her to maneuver out of tight spaces.
Caicedo has excellent vision and variety in her passes, allowing her to pose a threat from all areas of the pitch. Her dynamic nature and quality allows her to play in any position across the front line, while her excellent technical ability seeps into her shooting as well, and she can generate power and placement with minimal setup.
She has the clutch gene in her as well, and often comes up with crucial goals on the big stage. Whether it’s a UWCL quarterfinal goal against Arsenal last season or a strike against Germany at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, Caicedo is always there. López has been collecting individual accolades at every step of her young career to date. And despite the fact she is yet to turn 20, has already picked up three Liga F titles, two UWCL trophies, two Nations League titles, and a host of other team silverware.
Since joining Barcelona from Madrid CFF in 2022, the Spain forward has blossomed into an impactful player who can influence any game with her incredible ability on the ball. She has the footwork and vision to break opposition lines, while her purposeful dribbles often get the better of opposition defenses. In short: she is a creative behemoth, capable of producing chances from open play and set pieces. But López also works extremely hard without the ball.
The No. 1 on this list last year, López has long been the poster girl of next-gen footballers and still has room to grow. So it would be no surprise to see her here again next year.

MOSCOW — A German artist who created carnival displays mocking Russian President Vladimir Putin was sentenced in absentia on Thursday to 8 1/2 years in prison by a court In Moscow.
Jacques Tilly was convicted on charges of spreading false information about the Russian military and insulting religious feelings.
Carnival parades in Germany are famed for their floats mocking a wide variety of domestic and global political figures, and Putin has frequently been a target.
Tilly, 62, has been designing and building floats for Düsseldorf’s Carnival parade — one of Germany’s best-known — since 1984.
In recent years, his designs have depicted Putin scrubbing himself in a bathtub filled with blood and painted in the colors of the Ukraine flag, while another featured a red-faced Putin biting into Ukraine, which was decorated with the words “Choke on it!”
Tilly had previously told the German dpa news agency that the Russian criminal proceedings against him were “an authoritarian regime’s propaganda trial.”
“It’s very likely that the verdict against me has already been determined. I assume it will be many, many years of prison camp,” Tilly said. “It is an attack on our freedoms. On freedom of opinion, on freedom of the press, on freedom of satire, on jesters’ freedom. And that is how it is understood here in Germany.”
