Former Packers president and franchise legend Bob Harlan dies at 89

Bob Harlan, the former Green Bay Packers president and CEO who served the franchise in various capacities since 1971, died Thursday following an illness, according to the Packers. He was 89.
Harlan, who was elected as president and CEO in 1989, oversaw a revival of the most historic franchise in the NFL. The Packers registered 13 straight seasons of .500 or better from 1992-2004, and captured a Lombardi Trophy in 1997 by defeating the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXI, 35-21.
“The Packers family was saddened to learn of the passing of Bob Harlan,” Packers president and CEO Ed Policy said in a statement. “Bob was a visionary leader whose impact on the franchise was transformational. From his inspired hiring of Ron Wolf to turn around the club’s on-field fortunes to his tireless work to redevelop Lambeau Field, Bob restored the Packers to competitive excellence during his tenure and helped ensure our unique and treasured flagship NFL franchise was on sound footing for sustained generational success.
“We send our deepest sympathies to his wife, Madeline, and the entire Harlan family.”
Harlan’s hiring of general manager Ron Wolf in 1991 was critical, as he also hired Mike Holmgren as head coach, traded for quarterback Brett Favre, and signed the legendary Reggie White in free agency. Green Bay immediately snapped a streak of two losing seasons, made the playoffs for the first time in a decade in 1993, and appeared in the NFC Championship game the very next year. Following that loss to the Dallas Cowboys, the Packers went 13-3 in 1996 and won the Super Bowl.
“Bob Harlan’s leadership of the Green Bay Packers was outstanding,” Favre said of Harlan in a statement. “Hiring Ron Wolf and supporting the trade that brought me to Green Bay changed my career. The organization believed in me and gave me the opportunity.
“He was so supportive of me during the challenges I faced in my career. Challenges my family faced, too. He was always there offering his support. He was a great and kind man.
“I appreciated the way he represented the Packers and connected so well with Packers fans. I also truly enjoyed his sense of humor and cherished the moments we shared over the years.
“I know winning the Super Bowl and bringing the Lombardi Trophy back to Green Bay was a proud moment for him, what the team accomplished. It was incredible to be a part of the resurgence of this great franchise and Bob set the tone with his leadership.”
When Wolf stepped down in 2001, the Packers gave coach Mike Sherman managerial duties for four seasons before bringing former director of player personnel Ted Thompson back to Green Bay. Thompson’s first selection came at No. 24 overall in the 2005 NFL Draft, a pick he used on a quarterback by the name of Aaron Rodgers. Green Bay would go on to win its fourth Super Bowl (XLV) in 2011, making Harlan the only executive in NFL history to hire two different general managers that won Super Bowls with entirely different rosters, per ESPN.
Harlan did a lot more than just field a successful football team. Back in 2000, he helped produce and fought for a $295 million redevelopment plan of Lambeau Field. His successor, Mark Murphy, said Harlan was the “Most responsible for Lambeau Field becoming the most iconic stadium in the NFL.”
Harlan was elected to the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009.

EVERGREY Drop Explosive Single “Architects Of The New Weave” From Upcoming 15th Album
Swedish progressive metal masters Evergrey are ushering in a new chapter with the release of their latest single, “Architects Of The New Weave.” The track arrives alongside a visually striking animated video and serves as the title cut from the band’s upcoming fifteenth studio album, Architects Of A New Weave, due June 5, 2026 via Napalm Records.
More than three decades into their career, the Gothenburg outfit continues to evolve, blending soaring melodies, powerful riffs, and emotionally charged lyricism. The new album promises a cinematic journey through darkness and redemption — a plunge into “thinning air, burning worlds, and lingering guilt” before ultimately rising with fierce momentum.
Frontman Tom Englund describes the new single as an immediate standout. “Architects Of The New Weave – it’s a blistering first single from our 15th studio album… I am not afraid to claim this is a no-brainer, sing-along friendly, straight-up great metal song,” Englund says. “It came ignited from Rikard Zander‘s killer keyboard riff, which we hammered into a short, but massive headbanger.”
He also cites a classic heavy metal influence while crafting the song’s soaring chorus. “When crafting that chorus keyboard line, ‘Rainbow In The Dark’ was blasting in my head – pure epic inspiration, giving it that timeless, fist-pumping edge.”
The track features fiery dual guitar solos that trade off in classic old-school style, adding another layer of melodic drama to the anthemic arrangement. “There are dual guitar solos, trading fire… melodic and memorable. We can’t wait to let this rip live,” Englund adds.
The animated video for the single offers fans an immersive look at the intricate world created by artist Mattias Norén, whose elaborate album artwork comes to life onscreen.
“We went bold: a stunning, immersive introduction to Mattias Norén‘s absolute magnum opus of album artwork,” Englund explains. “Every tiny, intricate detail comes alive on screen, with the track thundering as the perfect dark soundtrack. It’s hypnotic, lets the art breathe, and pulls you deeper into our world.”
He adds that the band carefully chose the title track as the album’s opening statement. “We could’ve chosen any track from the album as the lead, but this one’s the perfect explosive opener to our new era of beautiful darkness. I’ve never been more fired up. Crank it loud, join the weave, and let’s build something unstoppable together.”
Architects Of A New Weave will arrive just days before Evergrey joins heavy metal titans Iron Maiden as special guests on two dates of their massive Run For Your Lives World Tour, placing the band in front of some of the biggest audiences of their career.
If the ferocious title track is any indication, Evergrey‘s next era promises to be as dark, cinematic, and emotionally gripping as anything they’ve released in their 30-plus-year legacy.

Gretchen Wilson Reveals Who Inspired ‘Redneck Woman’
Since her breakout in the mid-2000s, Gretchen Wilson has been known as country music’s whiskey drinking, butt-kicking “Redneck Woman.” But her inspiration for the career-making song is surprising.
It all started with a conversation with John Rich.
What Inspired Gretchen Wilson’s “Redneck Woman”?
“The day that we wrote ‘Redneck Woman’ was a day that John and I were sitting around watching country music videos, and Faith Hill‘s ‘Breathe’ was on,” Wilson tells Taste of Country.
“She’s gorgeous. She looks like a supermodel. She’s rolling around in satin sheets. And that was the inspiration behind ‘Redneck Woman.’ I looked at John and said, ‘This is probably never gonna happen for me because I’ll never look like that, and I’ll never be that. That is just not the kind of woman I am.'”
He looked at me [and asked], ‘Well, what kind of woman are you then?’ And I said, ‘I’m a redneck woman.’ Then he said, ‘What’s the matter with that?’ We, at that moment, decided to be as authentic as we could about that kind of a woman, and I felt like it was a responsibility almost at that point to speak to those girls who felt like me.”
Needless to say, it worked. Wilson’s 2004 album Here for the Party, which contained the title track and “Redneck Woman” as singles, sold 5 million copies.
“Redneck Woman” was released to country radio on March 5, 2004, and hit No. 1 on May 29, 2004.
“The reason why I became successful in the first place is I think women — and maybe some men — they accepted me because I was a voice that was speaking to them about them. For a long time, I feel like in country music, women had gotten so slick and soft and pretty. So being authentic and being real, that is what got me to this dance.”
