American Oksana Masters wins 20th Paralympic medal: “My emotions are just pure shock”

0

Oksana Masters, the most decorated American Winter Paralympian, surprised even herself by adding a 20th Paralympic medal to her overall tally at Milan Cortina on Saturday.

After overcoming a series of adversities that hindered her preparations in the leadup to the Games, Masters came through with victory in the women’s sprint sitting discipline in Para biathlon, finishing ahead of fellow American Kendall Gretsch.

“Oh my gosh, my emotions are just pure shock. I did not expect this. All I was hoping was just to have a good time in the shooting range,” she said. “I did not expect a podium finish to be honest, let alone a gold.”

It was her sixth Winter Paralympic gold medal to go along with her four victories at the Summer Paralympics. She has competed in every Paralympics since 2012, earning medals in Para cross-country and Para biathlon in the winter and Para cycling and Para rowing in the summer.

Masters was coming off a difficult season that included surgery, a bone infection and a concussion.

“I’m starting to realize that’s who I am. I have to have adversity going into the Games, although I don’t like it,” she said. “The summer started out with surgery and then the last three weeks have been just absolutely a lot of time away from training, with infection and with a concussion, and battling, and just trusting the process and waiting. This is why this just means so much more, I did not expect this.”

She thanked her “incredible team” to help her bounce back and triumph again.

“I’m the athlete that crosses the finish line, but we have an entire team with our coaches that are cheering with us, and our skis and our wax team,” she said.

Masters now has won 15 medals in the Winter Games and five medals in the Summer Games. She became the first American to win seven medals — in seven events — at a single Paralympics in Beijing 2022.

The 36-year-old Masters was born in Ukraine with birth defects believed to be related to the Chernobyl nuclear accident. She had to go through orphanages at an early age in Ukraine before being adopted by an American father. She had her left leg amputated at age 9, and her right leg amputated at age 14.

“For me, I have a very strong ‘why’, where every single stroke for me counts,” she said. “It’s for every Paralympian, every athlete with a disability that was overlooked and was told they were never going to be enough and didn’t belong. That helps me overcome those adversities.”

MATT ZANE Oversteps Yet Again, Shares Unreleased WAYNE STATIC Track While Looking For New Singer To Re-Track STATIC Songs

0

Yet again, Matt Zane has gone ahead and stepped over the line of what’s appropriate as he pursues the unapproved documentary surrounding deceased Static-X lead singer Wayne Static. This comes after Static‘s family has objected to the film – even ordering a cease-and-desist this past December –, as well as the band, and the family of Static‘s late wife, Tera Wray, who took her life in 2016. With so few people backing the film, Zane turned to crowdfunding which raised a whopping $400, ultimately pushing through because he says he was friends with both Static and Wray in their final years.

In a post to Instagram, Matt Zane wrote in the comments that he was releasing an unheard track of Wayne Static, despite quite literally everyone telling him not to, saying that he couldn’t use the unreleased music for the documentary. He writes complete normally in the third-person,

“An unfinished, previously unheard track recorded by late STATIC-X frontman Wayne Static has surfaced as part of filmmaker Matt Zane’s ongoing unauthorized documentary project.

“According to Zane, the song was intended to appear in his forthcoming film about Wayne and his late wife Tera Wray. However, the estates of Wayne and Tera, along with Static-X, have declined to grant permission for the unreleased music to be used.

“I want to make it clear, I’d love to finish and give Wayne’s fans his final recording but the families and Static-X aren’t allowing it,” said Zane. “I’d give 100% of the profits of the music to Wayne’s and Tera’s family as long as the recordings were kept in their original form. They were recorded as Wayne Static solo music, not Static-X.

The Backstory
Zane says the material dates back to 2008 while he was directing Tera Wray in her music series Radium. At the time, Wayne offered music to support the project.

“Warner Brothers stopped us but not before Wayne gave me a bunch of stuff,” Zane explained. “I cover the entire ordeal in the documentary. I have a video of Wayne publicly admitting he wrote music for the series.”

Now, years later, Zane has chosen to move forward with completing select portions of the material for inclusion in the documentary and its potential soundtrack.

“There are songs that I won’t touch that Wayne wrote 100% of,” Zane stated. “But all the misc. riffs and other ideas are what I’ll use. Wayne liked what I was doing with them so I figure I’m on the right track.”

Singer Search Begins
Due to legal restrictions preventing the use of Wayne Static’s original vocal tracks, Zane is now launching an open call for vocalists who believe they can step in and honor Wayne’s style and legacy.

“It’s just like what Jonathan Davis did for the Queen of the Damned soundtrack,” Zane said. “He wasn’t allowed to sing on that soundtrack so he brought in other singers, including Wayne!”

Fans and vocalists interested in participating are invited to submit a recording of themselves performing their favorite Wayne Static song to:

Albies’ walkoff leads Netherlands to World Baseball Classic win

0

Ozzie Albies hit a game-winning three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Netherlands over Nicaragua on Saturday.

The Netherlands began its two-out rally on Ceddanne Rafaela‘s single against reliever Angel Obando. Xander Bogaerts doubled, advancing Rafaela to third before Albies hit Obando’s first pitch over the wall in right.

The Netherlands improved to 1-1 in Group D. Nicaragua dropped to 0-2.

Jeter Downs hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth to put Nicaragua ahead 3-1. He drove a sinker from Netherlands reliever Lars Huijer over the wall in left-center. Huijer threw two innings of relief for the win.

The Netherlands stranded 14 base runners and were 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position before Albies’ homer.

Rafaela, Bogaerts and Druw Jones all had two hits for the Netherlands.

Nicaragua starter Erasmo Ramirez plunked Albies with the bases loaded in the third, giving the Netherlands a 1-0 lead. Ramirez allowed one run and five hits over five innings while Netherlands starter Jaitoine Kelly threw two scoreless innings.

Naylor brothers’ defense, Cassie’s 2-run HR lead Canada over Colombia

A run-saving defensive play by brothers Josh and Bo Naylor boosted Canada in the first inning at San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Owen Cassie hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the second off emergency starter Austin Bergner as Canada downed Colombia 8-2.

Julio Teheran was a last-minute scratch as Colombia’s starting pitcher, leaving 35-year-old Bergner, who last pitched in MLB in 2024, to take on the short-notice start after Teheran felt right shoulder impingement while warming up.

Canada won its opener while Colombia dropped to 0-2 in Group A.

Michael Arroyo led off the game with a single off Michael Soroka, stole second and took third on a wild pitch. Reynaldo Rodriguez grounded to first baseman Josh Naylor, who threw to brother Bo at the plate for the tag.

That was one of four Colombia outs on the bases. Rodriguez and Jesus Marriaga were caught stealing by Bo Naylor and Daniel Vellojin was thrown out trying to reach second on a dropped fly ball in the ninth inning.

Arroyo cut Colombia’s deficit with an RBI single in the third off Soroka, who allowed four hits over three innings for the win. Abraham Toro restored a two-run lead with a bases-loaded walk in the bottom half from Emerson Martinez.

Josh Naylor had an run-scoring single in the seventh that drove in Denzel Clarke, a cousin, after Marriaga dropped Clarke’s fly to right for an error.

Harold Ramirez had an RBI double in the eighth. With two on and two outs, Gio Urshela swung and missed at three straight sliders from Eric Cerantola.

Toro had an RBI triple in a four-run bottom half and scored on Bo Naylor’s single.

Phillippe Aumont, who last pitched in the major leagues in 2015, struck out Tito Polo for the final out.

Wrexham’s upset bid of Chelsea falls just short in extra time

0

Wrexham’s attempt to stun the soccer world with an FA Cup fifth‑round miracle fell just short, falling to Premier League club Chelsea 3-2 on Saturday, holding their own in the process, twice leading the Blues.

Sam Smith ignited belief in the 18th minute for the ambitious hosts, finishing coolly on the counter, but Chelsea clawed back through a cruel own goal before halftime. Wrexham would not be slowed down as Callum Doyle, in the 79th minute, flicked on a powerful shot into the box for the temporary lead before Josh Acheampong’s 82nd‑minute equalizer restored order.

A red card to Wrexham’s George Dobson in the 93rd minute due to a reckless challenge opened the door for Chelsea, in theory, to cruise into the next round, providing them with a one-man advantage the rest of the way. However, Wrexham looked up to the challenge, producing chances of their own despite being shorthanded.

But it was Alejandro Garnacho in the first half of extra time, finishing off a fine cross from Dario Essugo with a well-placed volley after being left completely unmarked, providing the winning goal.

After Chelsea’s go-ahead goal, it looked like this drama might have yet another twist to its already convoluted tale. But what briefly seemed like a Wrexham 114th-minute equalizer from Lewis Brunt off of a corner was eventually ruled out by VAR, breaking hearts around the stadium, and leaving owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac to wonder what might have been.

After that Chelsea left nothing to chance, tacking on a fourth goal before the final whistle with Joao Pedro finishing from the top of the box to ice the match. So, Chelsea roll on, and Wrexham are left to wonder what might have been.

Wrexham’s ascent has become one of the sport’s most compelling storylines, blending Hollywood star power with a community that’s been hungry for revival. The transformation began after actors Reynolds and Mac took over five years ago, pairing investment with a documentary series, “Welcome to Wrexham.” The celebrity backing helped fuel an extraordinary run of three straight promotions, lifting the club from the National League to the Championship, placing them on the edge of a historic push toward the Premier League.
