MAC commissioner confident of 2 bids despite Miami (Ohio) loss

0

CLEVELAND — Mid-American Conference commissioner Jon A. Steinbrecher is hoping the success of Miami (Ohio) this season pays off Sunday and in the future.

Steinbrecher is confident that his conference will get two teams into the NCAA tournament for the first time in 27 years, despite the RedHawks losing to UMass 87-83 in the MAC tournament quarterfinals on Thursday after going 31-0 in the regular season.

“I believe Miami’s in the tournament,” Steinbrecher said Friday before the start of the conference semifinals. “I had communication with the committee chair and committee liaisons yesterday and just passed along some information. They’re not going to tell me for sure, but I just feel that they’re in. They’ve done the things they need to do to get into the tournament. I think history has shown that until we’re shown otherwise.”

The MAC has received multiple bids five times since the field was expanded to 64 teams in 1985. The last time was in 1999 when Kent State won the conference tournament to earn its first NCAA trip while Miami got in with an at-large berth after winning the regular-season title.

Miami made the committee look good by making it to the Sweet 16.

The RedHawks were the fifth team this century to go through the regular season undefeated but were the second to get tripped up in their conference tournament.

Miami’s detractors have pointed out its low strength of schedule — 344th out of 365 Division I teams, according to the NCAA Evaluation Tool — as a reason it should not be in the field of 68 teams. Steinbrecher and many of his mid-major brethren point out, though, that Tier 1 teams do not want to schedule Tier 2 and 3 schools.

The RedHawks faced no Tier 1 teams and were 2-0 against Tier 2 squads.

“We’ve allowed metrics to become the story as opposed to wins and losses. Well, the metrics don’t work real well when you have different schools who go out of their way not to schedule, and that’s what’s occurring,” Steinbrecher said. “We have a number of schools that have trouble getting quality games, so people aren’t willing to play them.

“For those schools that are traditionally Tier 1, what the metrics are driving them to do is continue to play other Tier 1s or play Tier 4s and then beat the daylights out of them. That’s their secret sauce. Anywhere in that Tier 2 or Tier 3, they’re shying away from it.”

The last team to go through the regular season unbeaten and not make the NCAA tournament was Alcorn State in 1978-79. That was because the Southwest Athletic Conference was in a transition period to Division I and did not have an automatic bid. The tournament field then also had only 40 teams.

Second-seeded Akron (28-5) will face fourth-seeded Toledo (19-14) in Saturday night’s championship game. The Zips — who had one conference loss in the regular season — are trying to become the first school to win three straight MAC tournaments since it started in 1980.

Wild boar roams into Berlin mall, prompting police response with blowgun, riot shields

0

A wild boar wandered into a Berlin shopping mall’s home decor shop on Friday, sparking a police response that drew in officers and veterinarians equipped with a tranquilizer gun, shields and even a blowgun but ended peacefully.

Police said they were alerted to the porcine intruder around 9 am when it slipped through sliding glass doors into the mall and started rummaging through the aisles, as staff quickly vacated the shop.

Berlin’s Tierpark zoo told AFP it deployed a team to the scene in the southeastern Koepenick district but quickly assessed “that sedating the animal was not possible due to the layout of the premises.”

Berlin police released an image on social media, showing the wild boar roaming through a store.

Officers used pallets and riot shields to divert the animal back outside after cordoning off the mall, a police spokesman told German news agency dpa.

Police said “the wild boar then returned to the forest, which we assume it came from.”

It was not the first time a wild boar has roamed built-up areas of the German capital, which is surrounded by woods. In July 2023, a wild boar prowling the streets of southwestern Berlin sparked panic after it was briefly mistaken for a lioness.

Germans have been told to be on the lookout for other wild animals over the years.

In May 2023, residents in the central city of Erfurt were jolted by the sight of a kangaroo hopping across a busy road after escaping from a private property.

In 2019, it took several days for a deadly cobra to be recaptured in the western town of Herne, where residents had been told to keep their windows closed and steer clear of tall grass.

In 2016, zookeepers shot dead a lion after it escaped from its enclosure in the eastern city of Leipzig and a tranquilizer failed to stop it.

Dutch police hunt suspect filmed setting off a blast outside a Jewish school in Amsterdam

0

AMSTERDAM — Dutch authorities were hunting Saturday for a person who was filmed setting off an explosion outside a Jewish school in Amsterdam. The mayor denounced the attack as a cowardly act of aggression against the city’s Jewish community.

A City Hall statement said the overnight blast against the outer wall of the school in the Dutch capital’s Buitenveldert district caused only limited damage. The person who detonated the explosion was caught on camera, it said.

Mayor Femke Halsema said in the statement that Amsterdam’s Jewish residents feel “fear and anger” and are increasingly being targeted by antisemitism.

“That is unacceptable. A school must be a place where children can learn safely. Amsterdam must be a place where Jews can live safely,” she said.

Security around Jewish schools and other sites was reinforced after an explosion near a synagogue in Liege, Belgium, and a blast that caused a small fire at the entrance of a synagogue in the Dutch port city of Rotterdam on Friday.

“Two nights in a row, a cowardly attack with an explosive at a Jewish building. First in Rotterdam, now in Amsterdam,” the Dutch justice and security minister, David van Weel, posted on X.

“The safety of Jewish institutions has our full attention. An investigation into the perpetrators is underway.”

Record Warmth Today and Winds Pick Up Sunday

Red Flag Warning In Effect This Afternoon.

HEY, GOOD MORNING, NEW MEXICO. IT IS 614 TODAY. IT’S GOING TO BE THOSE RECORD TEMPERATURES POSSIBLE FOR THIS AFTERNOON. BUT AS WE HEAD INTO THE OVERNIGHT HOURS INTO SUNDAY, THAT’S IMPACT. WHETHER WE’RE TALKING IT’S ALL BECAUSE OF THE WINDS. NORTHWEST WINDS AT 30 TO 40 MILES AN HOUR. WIND GUSTS COULD POSSIBLY BE REACHING 60 TO 70 MILES AN HOUR. THIS DOES INCLUDE THE ALBUQUERQUE METRO AREA. HIGH WIND WATCH WILL BE IN EFFECT OVERNIGHT TONIGHT INTO SUNDAY. SO AROUND 3 A.M. UNTIL 6 P.M. SO IT’S GOING TO BE BREEZY OUT THERE FOR TODAY. ABOUT 20 TO 30 MILE PER HOUR WIND GUSTS RIGHT NOW. AND THEN YOU COULD SEE 80 DEGREE TEMPERATURES FOR ALBUQUERQUE, POSSIBLY SETTING A NEW RECORD ACROSS SOUTHERN PORTIONS OF THE STATE AS WELL. YOU CAN SEE A LOT OF AREAS GOING TO BE HITTING THE 90S TODAY. PARTLY CLOUDY SKY OUT THERE. AND THEN WINDS PICK UP AS WE HEAD INTO THE OVERNIGHT HOURS. GOING TO FEEL COOLER AS WELL. 30S, 40S OUT THERE, LOW 50S FOR SOUTHERN PORTIONS OF THE STATE. WE SEE THIS BACK DOOR COLD FRONT PUSHING IN. AND THIS IS WHY AHEAD OF THAT COLD FRONT, THOSE WINDS ARE GOING TO START TO PICK UP. AND THEN AS WE HEAD INTO TOMORROW, WE’RE TALKING DANGEROUSLY STRONG WINDS. YOU CAN SEE SUNNY OUT THERE. STILL GOING TO BE PRETTY MILD IN THE 70S AND 80S ACROSS SOUTHERN PORTIONS OF THE STATE, BUT NOTICEABLY COOLER FOR NORTHERN PORTIONS OF THE STATE. WE’RE HITTING 40S AND 50S FOR OUR HIGHS TOMORROW AFTERNOON. BUT LOOK AT THESE WIND GUSTS. STRONGEST WINDS FOR THE ALBUQUERQUE METRO AREA GOING TO BE SUNDAY MORNING. YOU CAN SEE OVER 20 TO 30 MILES AN HOUR, ABOUT 60 MILE PER HOUR WIND GUSTS IN THE SANTA ROSA AREA. SO FOR EASTERN NORTHEASTERN PORTIONS OF THE STATE COULD POSSIBLY BE SEEING THE STRONGEST WIND GUSTS. AS WE HEAD INTO TOMORROW AFTERNOON. SO YOU CAN SEE ALL ACROSS THE STATE, WE DO HAVE HIGH WIND WATCHES IN EFFECT. THAT ALSO INCLUDES THE ALBUQUERQUE METRO AREA, THE WESTERN MOUNTAIN AREAS. THESE ARE ALSO AREAS THAT WE HAVE SEEN MODERATE TO SEVERE DROUGHT. SO THAT’S ALSO GOING TO ELEVATE THAT FIRE WEATHER RISK AS WELL AS WE HEAD INTO TOMORROW. SO TODAY WE DO HAVE A RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT FOR NORTHEASTERN THE EASTERN CENTRAL HIGHLAND AREAS. AND YOU CAN SEE THAT IS EXTENDED FIRE WEATHER.
