Public weighs in on Expo New Mexico redevelopment amid stadium debate

0

The Expo New Mexico State Fairgrounds redevelopment project is drawing public attention as discussions continue over the potential inclusion of a sports stadium, with public input being sought before finalizing the master plan. On Wednesday, County Commissioner Adriann Barboa claimed the state planned to add the stadium without informing the public, while the governor’s office countered that no plan has been finalized and discussions have been ongoing for months. Friday’s meeting was one of the final opportunities for public input before the master plan is completed, with more than 200 people in attendance. The redevelopment is seen as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to reshape the 250-acre site and the surrounding International District. Project ideas include upgrading fairground facilities, adding retail and entertainment options, a stadium, mixed-income housing, and more green space.A community survey with 902 responses and 26 in-depth interviews revealed that the top priority for residents is reducing crime, followed by housing, traffic, parking and water concerns. Target Hastily Removing Popular Cereals Off Shelves: Here’s Why

0

Target has just taken a small step for man and a giant leap for mankind by deciding to cease the sales of any cereals that contain certified synthetic colors.

Which Cereals Will Target Stop Selling?

According to All Recipes some of the major cereal brands that Target will cease to sell  moving forward include Apple Jacks, Captain Crunch, Froot Loops, and Lucky Charms.

This is based on their current list of ingredients, which do include the synthetic colors, unless their parent brands decide to remove those colors by May. That’s when Target plans to pull them off of shelves.

What is a Certified Synthetic Color?

They are basically classified into a few different food color dyes:

  1. FD&C Red No. 40
  2. FD&C Yellow No. 5
  3. FD&C Yellow No. 6
  4. FD&C Blue No. 1
  5. FD&C Blue No. 2
  6. FD&C Green No. 3

If you are a guy who grew up in the 1990s you likely have heard the rumor of what Yellow No. 5 is said to do to you — testicle shrinkage, lower sperm count and male infertility.

But scientific reviews have not found evidence in humans showing that normal dietary exposure causes those effects. The Nutrition Journal reviewed 28 studies and found that, while there was some evidence of negative effects, it wasn’t consistent enough to conclusively suggest that Yellow No. 5 was to blame. Other factors, such as the possibility that drinking large amounts of soda could lead to diabetes later in life, were in play.

Target’s executive vice-president and chief merchandising officer, Cara Sylvester has noted in the press release “We know consumers are increasingly prioritizing healthier lifestyles, and we’re moving quickly to evolve our offerings to meet their needs.”

There is a chance that General Mills and Kellogg’s will get those colors phased out in the near future, but likely not by May of this year, so if you fancy those specific cereals and you shop at Target, best to start stocking up.

Or you can do what any other red-blooded American would do, go to a different store to secure your certified synthetic dye laden cereal of your choice.

What other snacks came and went from our lives in the 1990s and beyond? Follow us as we look back at some ’90s snacks that have since disappeared.

2026 World Baseball Classic bracket, schedule: Team USA moves on for showdown vs. Dominican Republic

0

Team USA is moving on in the 2026 World Baseball Classic bracket. The Americans held on for a 5-3 win against Canada on Friday night at Daikin Park in Houston. Team USA’s win sets up the biggest game of the tournament so far: USA vs. the Dominican Republic on Sunday in the semifinals.

The Dominican Republic improved to 5-0 in the WBC on Friday night, smashing Korea with a 10-0 rout. Team USA and D.R. are the two biggest favorites to win the WBC title, but only one will reach the title game. Paul Skenes will get the ball for the Americans against the loaded Dominican Republic lineup.

Italy, Puerto Rico, Japan and Venezuela are on the other side of the bracket, and they’ll all play quarterfinal matchups on Saturday. Italy, which went 4-0 and took down Team USA earlier this week, will face Puerto Rico. Venezuela will try to knock out Shohei Ohtani and reigning champion Japan.

The quarterfinals are being held Friday and Saturday, the semifinals will be Sunday and Monday, and the 2026 World Baseball Classic championship game is set for Tuesday. The semis and title game will be held at Marlins Park in Miami.

Here’s a look at the 2026 World Baseball Classic bracket:

World Baseball Classic/MLB

Team USA’s advancement out of pool play was more nerve-wracking than expected, but the Americans are through to the semifinals thanks to Italy’s win over Mexico on Wednesday night. Team USA lost to Italy on Tuesday and had to sweat out Wednesday’s result. A narrow Mexico win would’ve sent the Americans packing.

Team USA finished in second place in Pool B, going 3-1 in group play. The U.S. easily beat Brazil and Great Britain before a close win over Mexico. The Americans then shockingly lost to Italy on Tuesday and set up a scenario where their quarterfinal fate was out of their hands. Italy, though, finished off a perfect round of pool play by beating Mexico to earn first place in Pool B. Italy’s win over Mexico prevented the knockout spots from being determined by the complicated WBC tiebreaker rules.

FanDuel considers Team USA to be the favorite to win the WBC (+125 odds). The Dominican Republic is second (+200), ahead of Japan (+400) and Venezuela (+1000). The Americans are considered -162 favorites in the head-to-head matchup with the Dominican Republic, with Skenes likely to be opposed by Luis Severino.

Japan took down the United States in the 2023 title game, with Ohtani famously striking out then-Angels teammate Mike Trout for the final out. Will the bracket provide a rematch? Or will the star-studded Dominican lineup or another team make a run at the trophy this year? We’ll find out in the coming days.

Inclusion of Russia in 2026 Venice Biennale art fair sparks outcry

0

ROME — The inclusion of Russia in the line-up of the 2026 Venice Biennale art fair has sparked international outcry, with the European Commission threatening to withhold funding and 22 European countries demanding Moscow stay away again over its war in Ukraine.

The scandal at the world’s oldest and most important contemporary art fair has put Italy’s Culture Ministry in the crosshairs. It comes just weeks after the Italian government had to stand by as the International Paralympic Committee allowed Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete under their national flags at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Paralympics.

Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli is trying to manage the diplomatic fallout, voicing clear opposition to the Biennale’s decision but acknowledging that its governing foundation is independent of the government and acted autonomously when it included Russia in the line-up for its 61st arts festival.

Russia has a permanent, historic pavilion in the Giardini exhibition area and under the rules governing the arts fair, has a streamlined process allowing it to participate in the show. But Moscow hasn’t appeared since the Ukraine war began: In 2022, the Russian pavilion was shuttered after its artists withdrew following Moscow’s invasion. In the 2024 edition, the pavilion was loaned to Bolivia for its exhibition.

The Venice Biennale Foundation on March 4 announced the line-up for its 2026 edition, which runs May 9-Nov. 22. Ninety-nine nations are participating, including seven for the first time.

Russia’s return to the fair was not highlighted by the Biennale, but it was merely included in the list of participating countries with an exhibition entitled “The Tree is Rooted in the Sky,” and some three dozen Russian artists participating.

As the outcry mounted, Giuli this week fired the ministry official who sits on the Biennale board, Tamara Gregoretti, accusing her of having failed to disclose to the ministry that Russia had indicated it would be participating and that she had supported its inclusion.

Giuli also launched an investigation to determine if Russia’s participation was compatible with the EU sanctions regime. Specifically, he demanded that the Biennale urgently provide all documentation, including correspondence with Moscow, about Russia’s plan to set up and manage the pavilion during the fair.

He spoke by telephone Friday with his Ukrainian counterpart, Tetyana Berezhna, and “reiterated the Italian government’s commitment to protecting Ukraine’s cultural identity, which has been under threat for over four years due to the Russian invasion, and reaffirmed his personal commitment and that of the government to the reconstruction of Ukraine’s cultural heritage,” the ministry said.

Berezhna, for her part, told Giuli that Russia’s participation was “unacceptable for Kiev and contrasts with the strong support for Ukraine maintained by the Italian government,” Giuli’s office said.

The head of the Biennale Foundation, Pietrangolo Buttafuoco, has defended the decision and framed it as an act opposing censorship.

He announced that this year’s edition will be accompanied by two dedicated exhibition spaces for “dissident” art. And he recalled that last year’s Venice Film Festival featured the world premiere of “The Wizard of the Kremlin,” an unflattering portrait starring Jude Law about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s rise to power.

But 22 European countries wrote a letter to Buttafuoco expressing their “profound concern” over Russia’s participation. They warned that Moscow could exploit it to “project an image of legitimacy and international acceptance that stands in stark contrast to the reality of Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine and the destruction of Ukrainian cultural heritage, as well as to European and international sanctions.”

The European Commission, for its part, condemned the Biennale decision and threatened to withhold EU funds for the fair, which would amount to some 2 million euros over three years.

“Should the Biennale Foundation proceed with its decision to allow Russia to participate, we will consider further measures, including the suspension or termination of ongoing EU funding to the Biennale Foundation,” said a statement from Commissioners Henna Virkkunen and Glenn Micallef.
