Cuba begins to restore electricity after nationwide power grid collapse

0

Cuba started restoring power Sunday after the nation’s energy grid collapsed a day prior, cutting electricity to millions of people. The blackout was the third this month.

Some 72,000 customers in the capital, among them five hospitals, had electricity again early Sunday, according to a report from the state-run Electric Union and the Ministry of Energy and Mines, but it’s only a fraction of Havana’s total population of approximately 2 million.

In Havana and provinces such as western Matanzas and eastern Holguin, local power microsystems were set up to supply the most vital centers. Residents in some areas of the capital told The Associated Press that power returned during the early morning hours.

Cuba is currently facing an unprecedented energy crisis. Its aging grid has drastically eroded in recent years, but the government has also blamed the outages on a U.S. energy blockade, after President Trump in January warned of tariffs on any country that sells or provides oil to Cuba. His administration is demanding that Cuba release political prisoners and move toward political and economic liberalization in return for a lifting of sanctions. Mr. Trump also has raised the possibility of a “friendly takeover of Cuba.”

Protests have been reported in Cuba in the past week as frustration grows over prolonged blackouts and worsening living conditions across the island, CBS Miami reported.

Another reason Cuba has been struggling with dwindling oil is the removal by the U.S. of Venezuela’s former President Nicolás Maduro, which halted critical petroleum shipments from the nation that had been a steadfast ally to Havana.

President Miguel Díaz-Canel has said the island has not received oil from foreign suppliers for three months. Cuba produces barely 40% of the fuel it needs to power its economy.

Daily blackouts have a significant impact on the population, whose lives are disrupted by reduced work hours, lack of electricity for cooking and damage to household appliances, among many other consequences.

“With the blackout and low voltage, my refrigerator broke — that was today. The day before yesterday, the voltage also dropped around 10 at night,” Suleydi Crespo, a 33-year-old woman with two small children, told AP on Saturday. “If there’s no electricity tomorrow, we won’t be able to get water.”

Residents also expressed exhaustion from the constant outages, whether nationwide or partial.

The Cuban Electric Union, which reports to the Ministry of Energy and Mines, reported that the total disconnection of the national energy system was caused by an unexpected shutdown of a generation unit at the Nuevitas thermoelectric plant in Camaguey province, without providing details on the specific cause of the failure.

The last nationwide blackout occurred on Monday. It took several days to restore power.

Saturday’s outage was the second in the past week and the third in March.

“We have to get used to continuing our usual routine. What else can we do? We have to try to survive. Get used to events, with or without electricity,” said Dagnay Alarcón, a 35-year-old vendor.

Authorities and Díaz-Canel himself have acknowledged the seriousness of the current energy situation. The Vice Minister of Energy and Mines Argelio Abad Vigo explained this week that the country has gone three months without receiving supplies of diesel, fuel oil, gasoline, aviation fuel or liquefied petroleum gas — all vital for the economy and power generation.

Fuel sales for vehicles are rationed, airlines have suspended flights or reduced frequencies many workplaces have reduced hours.

Mr. Trump has for months suggested Cuba’s government is on the verge of collapse. After a previous time Cuba’s electric grid collapsed, Mr. Trump told reporters he believed he’d soon have “the honor of taking Cuba.”

María Regla Cardoso, a housewife in Havana, said she isn’t interested in politics and that Cubans have to keep living.

“I leave everything in God’s hands. Whatever form the situation takes, we just have to face it.”

UPDATE: Band Uploads Brand New Version Of Single After ‘Mix’ed Fan Reviews

0

Yesterday, Metal Injection reported that Boundaries and their newest single, “Skies cast amber black” had received quite a few critiques on the track’s mixing. To some, it sounded great, to others, they felt the mixing was dampening some of the best material of Boundaries‘ career – all publicly stated in the comments of the music video and on the r/metalcore subreddit. And, Boundaries frontman Matthew McDougal caught wind of this as he responded through a verified Reddit account, addressing people’s criticisms.

Now, McDougal has gone the extra mile, not only by interacting with fans, but taking their ideas to heart and releasing another mix that the band had been sitting on. In the caption of a post titled ‘Boundaries new song with a different mix’ is both a Dropbox link (which at time of writing is temporarily disabled most likely due to the fact that “the link has been shared or downloaded too many times in a day”) with the new mix, and an explanation from McDougal saying the following (edited for clarity):

“Hey guys, I’ll try to keep this as brief as possible.

“The connection we have with people who listen to us has always been at the forefront of our intentions behind what we make. We love you guys and everyone who has ever bought a shirt or sang a lyric at a show or just listened at home – ultimately, this doesn’t work without either of us, it’s 50% us, 50% you in a weird type of way.

“Obviously, we’ve seen how all over the place the reaction to the latest song mix has been. When we reached the finish line for turning in this latest song we had two mixes we were in love with and we were going back and forth over and over on which to put out. We felt the one that came out was something we identified with and love the sound of and are still completely willing to stay with.

“That being said, there was the other mix that didn’t make the cut. We loved it just as much to the point where I was sending both to friends and asking them to pick one because we just couldn’t.

“In this thread, I am putting the other mix. Do you guys like this one more? Because we loved both and could be happy with either, especially if one makes our listeners happier, in a way that might make us like it even more.

“Just to be clear, it’s the [version] that’s out or this one, there are no other versions we liked, and we don’t want to bring this to anyone else to mix – that’s not fair to who we made this music with. I know this is a unique situation we’ve found ourselves in, but we did not want to ignore how gentle and loving a lot of the reactions were to what we put out. It seemed to really come from the hearts of people this band means a lot to, that liked the song and wished they could like it even more.

“And it’s obviously completely fine to not like either mix, I’m not looking for people to feel like they need to say one is better to them – this is just such a specific situation where we happened to have two mixes we really liked haha.

“Anyways, thanks for your time and continued support, ya’ll are our world. Also I don’t know how to make posts with links in them and stuff so I just did my best.”

Posts from the metalcore
community on Reddit

Fans are already raving that they much prefer this newer mix, saying things along the lines of, “Holy fuck this mix is so much better,” and “both mixes are hard as fuck but this new one is a lot more raw and fits the original style you guys had, very nice.”

Edited at 1pm EST on 22 March: Matthew McDougal kindly fixed what was originally a broken Dropbox link by providing a link for the track on Samply. You can find that link here.

New BOUNDARIES Single Seems To Be Met With ‘Mix’ed Reviews; Band Responds

Everyone is a critic these days – and no one is immune, Boundaries included.

After signing to Sumerian Records and releasing their newest single, “Skies cast amber black” this past Friday (20th March), there were quite a few fans in the comments, commenting on the production and mixing of the track, disappointed by technicalities which, for some, overshadow what could be Boundaries best song yet.

Between YouTube and Reddit, remarks like “someone put a boundary on the low-end in the mix I believe,” and “awesome buildup and then just completely fucked by the horrible mix” were pretty common, and Boundaries vocalist Matthew McDougal caught wind of this while scrolling through the r/metalcore subreddit.

Commenting on a post of the band’s new video in the subreddit, McDougal says that (edited for clarity): “Really appreciate y’all for checking this out early, this sub has always been so supportive of us. I look forward to seeing how you guys react to our art more than I do any other platform at this point.

“As far as why Sumerian, it’s pretty much the new Sharptone because the guy that ran that label moved to Sumerian and we went with him, shopped labels for a bit but [in] real life we’d get responses back akin to “They don’t make r&b music over low-tuned guitars or stream well enough – not interested,” so the landscape for places that will take on what we do artistically is sadly not as wide as one might think.

“More and more labels are looking for overnight success-TikTok bands they can rob blind and dump after a year, which is largely what this song is about coincidentally. So far, [Sumerian] has been great to us and we are looking forward to making a home here for at least the next little while, and using the significant step up in resources to make even cooler stuff.

“That all being said, we had no clue the mix would be so divisive – we spent months on it and really love how it came out and we’re thankful for your honesty regarding how it hits people’s ears for the first time. I’ve been listening to this song in my room since fucking November and this mix really grew on me… maybe it will with everyone else as well? Who friggin knows.

“I can’t wait to be on the road playing it for you guys. We have so much more music locked and loaded.”

A few fans noted that the mix didn’t seem as bad with the YouTube music video, and McDougal pointed out that streaming platforms have their own settings which can impact the sound people hear, “All the platforms sound different, to be honest. Spotify has lossless listening now and they have their own EQ, YouTube has their own EQ – it legit sounds mad different on everything, but I can tell you the downloaded version on PC I am in love with.” A Qobuz user replied in turn that it sounded “fantastic,” through that streaming platform.

Guitarist Cody DelVecchio was also in the comments, confirming he was indeed providing screaming vocals throughout the track.

NHL reporter Jessi Pierce, 3 children die in house fire

0

NHL reporter Jessi Pierce and her three children were killed Saturday in a house fire in Minnesota, the league announced on its website Sunday.

Pierce, 37, covered the Minnesota Wild as the correspondent for NHL.com for the past decade.

“The entire NHL.com team is devastated and heartbroken by the loss of Jessi and her children,” Bill Price, vice president and editor in chief of NHL.com, said in a statement. “Jessi’s love of her family and hockey was evident in the energy and passion she brought to her work for us. She was an absolute joy to talk to and work with. She will be deeply missed.”

Added the NHL in a statement: “The entire National Hockey League family sends our prayers and deepest condolences to the Pierce family on the passing of Jessi Pierce and her three young children. Jessi loved our game and was a valued member of the NHL.com team for a decade. We will miss her terribly.”

Firefighters responded to a house fire Saturday morning in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. Neighbors called 911 and reported seeing flames coming through the roof. Fire crews located an adult, three children and a dog inside the house and all were deceased, the White Bear Lake Fire Department said. The department did not release the names of the victims in its statement Saturday.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

“Our hearts ache for those involved in this tragedy,” fire chief Greg Peterson said in the statement. “We ask for the opportunity to allow our community to come together and support one another during this difficult time.”

The Wild mourned her loss on social media Sunday.

“Jessi was a kind, compassionate person that cared deeply about her family and those around her. She served as an ambassador for the game of hockey during her time covering the Wild and the NHL,” the social media post read.

Minnesota is known as the “State of Hockey,” and the Wild have had one of the biggest fan bases since their inception in 2000. The North Stars had moved to Dallas to become the Stars in the early 1990s.

Syrian authorities’ new limits on alcohol sales in Damascus spark backlash

0

DAMASCUS, Syria — Crowds of Syrians rallied Sunday to protest authorities’ efforts to limit the sale and consumption of alcohol in Damascus, reflecting rising anxiety in the cosmopolitan capital that Syria’s new Islamist government may threaten long-held secular freedoms.

Hundreds of residents from a range of religious sects poured into a grassy square in Bab Touma, a Christian neighborhood in Damascus, chanting “Syrians are united!” and brandishing signs that urged the government to safeguard personal liberties and religious minorities.

“This is not about whether we want to drink alcohol, this is about personal freedom,” said Isa Qazah, a 45-year-old sculptor from the area who joined the protest along the medieval stone lanes near Damascus’ Old City. “We have come here to defend an idea.”

Heavily armed security forces surrounded the protesters. The demonstration passed without incident.

The controversy erupted last week, when the governor of Damascus issued a decree banning “the provision of alcoholic beverages of all kinds in restaurants and nightclubs” across the capital. Within three months, it says, restaurants must have tossed out their wine lists and bar and club owners must have traded their licenses for cafe permits.

The decision, which authorities said was made “at the request of the local community,” came as the interim government of former Islamist rebel and now President Ahmed al-Sharaa faces growing pressure from hard-liners to impose more conservative religious values. Al-Sharaa has not publicly weighed in on the alcohol debate.

More than a year after his movement ousted former President Bashar Assad, Syria is still reeling from 14 years of civil war and five decades of dictatorship as it struggles to define its future.

A member of the Alawite religious minority, Assad espoused a secular ideology to retain the support of fellow minorities in the Sunni-majority nation. Under his family dynasty, Syrians had little in the way of civic or political freedoms. But they could drink alcohol, party at nightclubs and dress how they pleased.

After being named the interim president, al-Sharaa vowed to unite the country and respect pluralism. He has so far tread lightly when it comes to imposing social restrictions. Yet Syria’s many religious and ethnic groups remain on edge.

Sectarian attacks by pro-government Sunni fighters have killed hundreds of Alawites and Druze over the past year.

Protesters on Sunday said they feared the latest alcohol restrictions could further fuel those tensions, as the decree allows alcohol to be sold in three predominantly Christian neighborhoods.

Still, establishments in Bab Touma, al-Qassaa and Bab Sharqi can’t serve booze on site, and shops in those three areas can sell alcohol only in sealed take-away bottles. Vendors also must keep at least 75 meters (246 feet) away from mosques and schools, and 20 meters (65 feet) away from police stations and government offices.

Some said that in singling out Christians, authorities are framing them as responsible for what the decree describes as “violations of public morals.” Although Islamic law prohibits the consumption of alcohol, Damascus is full of secular Muslims.

“How our are neighborhoods are violating public etiquette? The division this creates is unfair and irresponsible,” said Fawaz Bahauddin Khawja, a Christian lawyer at the rally. “This is the real face of Damascus. The only flag we raise is the Syrian flag.”

As criticism flared ahead of the protest, Damascus authorities issued a statement late Saturday apologizing to the city’s Christian population “for any misunderstanding or misinterpretation of the decision.” It also clarified that hotels will be spared the booze restrictions.

“This decision does not interfere with citizens’ personal freedoms,” the statement read. “The regulation of alcohol sales exists in all countries, with differences in how it’s applied and enforced.”

10 Stellar Artists To Support Throughout The Year, Regardless Of Women’s Month

0

Women’s Month feels like a double-edged, or even triple-edged sword at times (despite that not being possible) – there’s a certain amount of gratitude that we’re being recognised, annoyance that it takes a special occasion like Women’s Month to be respected, and irritation that we still need to bring gender into the discussion in 2025, in any way shape or form. True equality means not noticing a gender, and noticing a person, and their skills – period.

It’s the same argument that was outlined in Using Female-Fronted Now As A Genre Is Just As Lazy As It Was 30 Years Ago – gender is fucking irrelevant, and we can sing about that until the cows come home. There shouldn’t be the immediate reaction of, ‘Oh, damn!‘ to hearing that guitar solo you found intriguing to be produced by a woman, but there is. Gender became a marketing scheme, a cog in a greater plot of just selling products, something spectacular and unexpected in the metal genre. And while yes, metal is a predominantly male culture, it doesn’t belong to men. It isn’t men’s. Music isn’t men’s. It’s everyone’s. So, why highlight the obvious? Why is there shock and awe? Can’t we just pay some damn respect to good music? And just care about the good music.

So – that’s what this list is. An acknowledgment of skill and talent, things that make good fucking music. These are 10 artists that rip and are worth giving some time, love, and attention (maybe even a dollar or two) throughout not just the rest of the month, but the whole year, regardless of Women’s Month.

Roman Candle

Roman Candle is currently signed to Sumerian Records and are gearing up to release their newest record on the 24th of April. A melodic thumping post-hardcore essence carries itself throughout the heart of the band. Urgent in places and resigned in others, Roman Candle play with dynamics to make you feel what they’re saying as intensely as possible, but never in a way that feels controlling, but guiding. It works.

Heriot

Heriot have regularly been hailed as people’s “new favourite band” as their most recent LP received love from publications like NME, Pitchfork, The Guardian, Metal Hammer, Rock Sound, Kerrang!, Revolver, and Knotfest, and bands like Trivium and Lamb Of God have brought them on the road. Their most recent Audiotree session shows the dexterity and precision the post-metal group have developed since their beginnings in 2014 in the UK.

Crypta

Crypta has been a name that has begun circling death metal conversations as of late. From social media threads to internet forums asking ‘who are some of your favourite death metal groups at the moment?,’ Crypta is regularly mentioned. The Brazilian trio creates soul-incinerating blaze of death metal for those who are looking to melt into their chair and blast their brain with a symphony of death metal to drown it all out.

Cage Fight

Cage Fight are a UK-based, French-influenced (their lead singer Rachel Aspe is a French national) melodic metalcore group that features growls that wouldn’t be entirely out of place in a death or black metal setting. Signed to Spinefarm at the moment, they’re getting ready to release their newest record, Exuvia, on May 1st, their newest single, “Un Bon Souvenir” a promise of choruses that glide off the tongue and verses that howl.

Tetrarch

Tetrarch are Atlanta-natives, grinding since 2007, crafting out a charged blend of metal that grabs from thrash, doom, death, and classic subgenres. There’s a lot to unpack with Tetrarch, with skin-peeling guitar solos and melodic breaks that give you time to breathe. The now LA-based group released their most recent record, The Ugly Side Of Me, last year which was hailed by Louder as “no-nonsense, earwormy” piece of work.

Nervosa

Nervosa brings something a little new to the thrash table, the Brazilian group occasionally weaving their native tongue of Portuguese into their tracks that focus particularly on social issues such as “Cultura do Estupro” which translates to “Rape Culture,” and “Guerra Santa” which means “Holy War.” Despite the occasional inclusion of their culture, their thrash metal is nearly textbook – Nervosa are precise, unrelenting, and upbeat.

Calva Louise

Calva Louise have one of the most unique origin stories of all time – with the lead singer fleeing Venezuela at 14 to move into a convent with nuns in France and chastised for playing the electric guitar. While not classically trained, Calva Louise use classical Spanish elements on the guitar and piano, singing in Spanish, screaming like a banshee, and growling like a demon, there’s technicality and obscure aspects to their music as they dance around deathcore with electronic and cultural elements.

Bronco Forte

Bronco Forte is our obligatory stoner inclusion, with their gritty and groovy forthcoming record a necessity when appreciating good music. Their swinging guitars and smooth melodies make for a discography that is swampy in places with bright tones chiming in on occasion. Their newest single, “Lightning Scar,” is a gleaming, sunny track with thunderstorms that finish as soon as they start, a dynamic dance that glitters with essences of classic rock.

A.A. Williams

A.A. Williams is known for her epic, folk-rooted heavy tones, a trait that gained her notoriety from Robert Smith of The Cure and Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins for the release of her solo-cover collection recorded during the pandemic. Currently signed to Reigning Phoenix Music, Williams is already receiving praise for her recent singles off her upcoming record, Solstice, out on June 5th. Moody, ethereal, and cinematic, A.A. Williams‘ newest track will delight.

The Callous Daoboys

The Callous Daoboys have made a name for themselves as activists, and a band that puts their money where their mouth is. Their eclectic punk-fusion is as addictive as it gets, with funk and prog elements tucked into corners that aren’t always visible at first glance. Their protests and consistent action against the current administration aside, their punk exploration is balanced with soaring choruses that are easy to follow.
