Shiffrin wins World Cup slalom, but final race to decide title
HAFJELL, Norway — Mikaela Shiffrin vs. Emma Aicher for the most prestigious title in women’s skiing will go to the season-ending final race Wednesday.
Shiffrin won yet another slalom Tuesday — her ninth in 10 World Cup starts this season — by a massive margin of 1.32 seconds ahead of Wendy Holdener.
That earned Olympic champion Shiffrin 100 points in the race for the World Cup overall title, but Aicher’s impressive third place, awarded 60 points, kept the American’s lead in the standings below 100.
Shiffrin will start the season-ending giant slalom Wednesday 85 ahead of the German, who must win to deny the American superstar a women’s record-tying sixth overall title in her stellar career.
“It’s weird to say battle with somebody who I consider a friend,” Shiffrin said of Aicher. “These last races have been super exciting for me to be part of it.
“I’m so excited to watch what she does in the future but for now we have one more race to decide this one.”
The odds are stacked in Shiffrin’s favor.
Aicher has never won a World Cup giant slalom and has a career-best finish of fourth, achieved this month at Are, Sweden.
Shiffrin, the 2018 Olympic champion in giant slalom, can seal the overall title herself with a top-15 result Wednesday that will earn at least 16 points.
Swiss skier Holdener gave Shiffrin an assist Tuesday by taking second place ahead of Aicher by just 0.04. That kept 20 World Cup points off Aicher’s tally.
Shiffrin’s 110th career race win Tuesday is already by far the most in the World Cup by any man or woman. Ingmar Stenmark is next best with 86 wins in the 1970s and ’80s.
A sixth overall title Wednesday would match Austrian downhill great Annemarie Moser-Pröll for the women’s World Cup record.
Moser-Pröll won five straight titles from 1971-75 then a sixth in 1979. Shiffrin won three straight from 2017-19, then back-to-back titles in 2022 and ’23.
Shiffrin did set a women’s World Cup record Tuesday: Nine wins in a discipline is a single-season best in 60 years on the circuit. She long ago sealed her record ninth career slalom season title.
“This season has been so exciting, quite like a whirlwind,” she said. “I’m grateful for it.”
The sun is shining on Shiffrin as the season sets with warm temperatures of 7 degrees Celsius (44 F) and softening snow that barely slowed the greatest slalom skier.
Strikes hit Iran and Tehran targets Israel and Gulf states amid mixed signals over talks to end war
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Airstrikes battered Iran and Iranian missiles and drones targeted Israel’s Tel Aviv and sites across the Mideast on Tuesday, even as President Donald Trump said the United States was in talks with the Islamic Republic to end the war.
With thousands more U.S. Marines on their way to the Gulf, both sides firing barrages and Iran denying any negotiations are taking place, the war’s tempo remained high a day after Trump delayed his self-imposed deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran’s chokehold on that crucial waterway has snarled international shipping, sent fuel prices skyrocketing, and threatened the world economy.
Pakistan offered to host diplomatic talks, but Iran remained defiant, vowing to fight “until complete victory.”
Any talks between the U.S. and Iran would face monumental challenges. Many of Washington’s shifting list of objectives — particularly over Iran’s ballistic missile and nuclear programs — remain difficult to achieve. Meanwhile, it’s not clear who in Iran’s government would have the authority to negotiate — or be willing to, as Israel has vowed to continue taking out leaders after killing several.
Iran remains highly suspicious of the United States, which twice under the Trump administration has attacked during high-level diplomatic talks, including with the Feb. 28 strikes that started the current war.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif wrote on X that his country is ready to “facilitate meaningful and conclusive talks” to end the Iran war.
The U.S. had agreed “in principle” to join talks in Pakistan, according three Pakistani officials, one Egyptian official and a Gulf diplomat, while mediators were still working to convince Iran. The Pakistani officials said the “quiet diplomacy” had grown more complicated since news of it leaked.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to provide the details to the media.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s office said he has been talking about the war this week with his counterparts in several countries. But Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf called the idea of negotiations “fakenews” — and the spokesman of Iran’s top military command issued a newly defiant statement.
“Iran’s powerful armed forces are proud, victorious and steadfast in defending Iran’s integrity, and this path will continue until complete victory,” Iranian state television quoting Maj. Gen. Ali Abdollahi Aliabadi as saying Tuesday.
Aliabadi did not say what victory would look like, but Iran’s military could be trying to warn against offering concessions in any possible negotiations.
The Egyptian official said efforts are centered on “trust-building” between the U.S. and Iran, with the aim of bringing about a pause in fighting. Israel is not involved.
The official, who is involved in the efforts, said the priority is to prevent attacks on both Iran’s and Gulf Arab countries’ energy infrastructure and that they were working on a “mechanism” for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Talk of negotiations briefly drove down oil prices and boosted stocks. But that respite was short-lived, with the price of Brent crude, the international standard, nudging back over $100 a barrel Tuesday, up nearly 40% since the war started.
Israel said it carried out an extensive series of strikes on Iranian “production sites,” without providing more information. In Tehran, a massive blast was heard in northern neighborhoods and another in the city center.
Iran also fired multiple waves of missiles at Israel.
In Tel Aviv, a missile with a 100 kilogram (220 pound) warhead slammed into a street in the city center, blowing out windows of an apartment building and sending smoke billowing. Four people suffered minor wounds, rescue service worker Yoel Moshe said.
“It feels like you’re a (sitting) duck, waiting for the missiles to hit you, or someone next to you,” said Amir Hasid, emerging from a shelter.
In Kuwait, power lines were hit by air defense shrapnel, causing partial electricity outages for several hours. Bahrain said it was attacked with missiles and drones, the United Arab Emirates said air defense systems responded to similar attacks, and Saudi Arabia said it destroyed Iranian drones targeting its oil-rich Eastern Province.
Israel pounded Beirut’s southern suburbs saying that it was targeting infrastructure used by the Iran-linked Hezbollah militant group.
A strike on a residential apartment southeast of the Lebanese capital killed at least three people, including a 3-year-old girl, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry. Another five people were killed in the south.
Meanwhile, Lebanon declared Iran’s ambassador persona non grata and ordered him to leave by Sunday.
The dramatic move offers the latest evidence of the deterioration in relations between Lebanon and Iran. Iranian flights have been banned from landing in Lebanon, out of fear that they would carry weapons or funding for Hezbollah, and some top Lebanese government officials have been critical of Tehran’s role in the country, accusing it of dragging Lebanon into another war with Israel.
Authorities say Israeli strikes have killed more than 1,000 people in Lebanon and displaced more than 1 million.
Iran’s death toll has surpassed 1,500, its Health Ministry has said. In Israel, 15 people have been killed. At least 13 U.S. military members have been killed, along with more than a dozen civilians in the occupied West Bank and Gulf Arab states.
Trump’s announcement came as thousands of Marines headed to the region, raising speculation that the U.S. may try to seize Kharg Island, which is vital to Iran’s oil network. The U.S. bombed the Persian Gulf island more than a week ago, hitting its defenses but saying it had left oil infrastructure intact.
Iran has threatened to mine the Gulf if the U.S. appears to be on the verge of landing troops.
Trump said he would hold off on a threat to bomb Iran’s power stations while talks unfold — a delay that could be aimed at buying time for the Marines to arrive, the New York-based think tank the Soufan Center wrote in an analysis.
However, the center also noted that “Trump could be actively seeking an offramp.”
Trump has said he has no plans to send ground forces into Iran but has not ruled it out. Israel has suggested its ground forces could participate in the war.

How Kid Rock Got Cody Johnson’s ‘Blessing’ to Cut ‘Til You Can’t’
Cody Johnson says that it wasn’t an immediate “yes” when Kid Rock first asked his permission to record a version of “‘Til You Can’t.”
But when Rock explained why he wanted to record the song — and why it was so important to him to add another verse — Johnson was immediately sold.

Johnson broke down the timeline on how Kid Rock’s version of “‘Til You Can’t” came to be on a recent appearance of Dale Brisby’s Rodeo Time podcast, explaining that Rock had a conversation with him about recording the song soon after he first debuted it at Arizona’s Hondo Rodeo Fest.
How Did Kid Rock Ask For Cody Johnson’s “Blessing” to Record “‘Til You Can’t?”
Johnson said he was as surprised as all the fans watching when Kid Rock covered “‘Til You Can’t” at the Hondo Rodeo last November.
Rock was filling in for Johnson that night after Johnson had to cancel his set, along with several other performances, to undergo surgery for a burst ear drum.
He says he thought it was “really cool” when he realized that Rock had covered his song at the show.
But he knew there was more to the moment when his label head, Cris Lacy, gave him a heads up that Rock was going to call or text him about the song, saying, “He wants your blessing on him releasing this version of the song.”
Why Didn’t Cody Johnson Immediately Say Yes When Kid Rock Asked Permission to Record “‘Til You Can’t”?
His first reaction?
“I actually said, ‘What do Ben Stennis and Matt Rogers think about it? ‘Cause they’re the writers,” Johnson remembers.
Johnson’s label had already gotten the thumbs up from the songwriters, as long as Johnson was okay with it. So when he got on the phone with Rock, Johnson was enthusiastic about the idea.
Even more so when Rock pitched his idea of adding a new verse.
“He said, ‘Here’s the deal…I feel like that Ben and Matt did such a great job writing the song. I don’t want to insinuate that they didn’t write it good enough.'” Rock went on rattle off all the important things that the song brings up, like cherished moments with loved ones and family.
“But they just didn’t include God,” he continued. “I just felt like, you can only ask forgiveness and get to know Jesus until you can’t.”
“I was like, what a great — and coming from Kid Rock!” Johnson says. “It raised the hair on your arms. It was a conversation that I never thought I’d have in my life. And I was like, ‘I 100 percent sign off on it.'”
What Did Cody Johnson Think of Kid Rock’s Performance on the Turning Point USA Halftime Show?
During that same conversation, Rock told Johnson that he was going to sing his version of “‘Til You Can’t” during his headlining set of the Turning Point USA Halftime Show, which aired during the Super Bowl halftime show.

“I watched it. Had tears in my eyes,” Johnson recalls. “I was like, ‘Freaking Kid Rock singing my song, man. That’s cool.'”
“I wish he’d have worn a Cody Johnson hat, but I couldn’t talk him into that,” he jokes.
Rock released his studio version of “‘Til You Can’t” hours after he performed the song on Turning Point USA’s show.

2026 Houston Open odds, predictions: PGA picks from 10,000 simulations

A two-week stop in Texas leads into the Masters, and up first is the 2026 Houston Open beginning on Thursday at Memorial Park Golf Course. Texas native Scottie Scheffler is in the 2026 Houston Open field, and he’s a substantial favorite in the 2026 Houston Open odds this week at +350. Defending champion Min Woo Lee (+1500) is the only other golfer going off lower than +2000. Other Houston Open contenders include Chris Gotterup (+2000), Jake Knapp (+2200) and Brooks Koepka (+2700), who has just one top-10 finish this season in five tournaments since returning to the PGA.
Should you lay the pricy number on Scheffler this week, or is there better value on one of the many longshots in the field? Before locking in any 2026 Houston Open picks, entering any Houston Open one and done contests, or making any PGA DFS picks on sites like FanDuel or DraftKings, be sure to see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine.

2026 Houston Open predictions
One major surprise the model is calling for at the Houston Open 2026: Min Woo Lee, the defending champion and the second favorite, is not in the projected top five. He’s a golfer to fade this week. The 27-year-old Australian has had a strong season, but his last outing at The Players Championship was more of a struggle. He shot 70 or higher in each round, including a fourth-round 74 as he finished T32. See who else to fade here.
Another surprise: The model says Nicolai Hojgaard is a top-three favorite this week despite his longer odds at +3300. He had a tough weekend at the Valspar Championship last week, but hasn’t finished worst than T27 at any other event this season. That includes a T3 at the WM Phoenix Open and a T6 at the Cognizant Classic. See who else to pick here.

What we know about the LaGuardia plane and fire truck crash
Forest’s hometown, the small city of Coteau-du-Lac in southwestern Quebec, paid tribute to the pilot and offered condolences to his family, according to Canadian broadcaster TVA Nouvelles.
Seneca Polytechnic in Toronto confirmed that former student Gunther, who was the flight’s first officer, died in the crash. The college said he graduated with a degree in aviation technology in 2023 and joined Jazz through a graduate scheme.
“Seneca sends our deepest condolences to Mr. Gunther’s family and friends, and to his former colleagues and professors. He will be deeply missed,” Seneca said in its notice, adding that it would make counseling services available to its students.
‘The loudest boom I’ve ever heard’
One passenger on the Jazz Aviation flight told NBC News that she was snoozing on the plane when she was awoken by a flight attendant’s announcement.
“If this flight has an emergency landing, don’t take your luggage with you. Just exit quickly,” Rebecca Liquori recalled hearing. She described a rough descent and then the crash shortly after the plane touched down.

“It was like a grinding sound. Then, a couple seconds after that, you just felt the collision,” she said. “It was like the loudest boom I’ve ever heard.”
But it still isn’t exactly clear how the crash occurred.
Photos from after the crash show the plane wreck. The nose of the aircraft appeared torn off, leaving mangled parts of the front of the plane dangling toward the ground.
NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy said the investigation will span the aircraft’s operations, examine components of the plane and the flight control system, and analyze the accident scene, air traffic control and airport operations.
Aviation experts have said investigators will examine the possibility of radio failures, failed runway crossing procedures and human error, among other factors, to determine what went wrong.
Air traffic control audio recordings released by LiveATC appear to show a controller giving the truck the go-ahead to cross the runway, but soon afterward, a controller says, “Truck 1, stop.” After the collision, an air traffic controller is heard on the audio saying, “I messed up.”
It was the first fatal crash at the New York airport in more than 30 years, officials said Monday.
