As Iran keeps the Strait of Hormuz locked down, it’s borrowing from Ukraine’s playbook

0

Dubai – After President Trump backed off his threat to “obliterate” Iran’s energy infrastructure if it refused to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the vital shipping lane remains effectively closed to vessels not granted explicit permission by Tehran.

As the U.S. and its allies weigh how to get oil and other critical supplies moving through the strait again, there’s a growing question: Even with thousands more U.S. forces heading for the region, can any military force do the job?

The four-year war still raging in Ukraine suggests the answer may be, no.

When Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022, Ukraine’s military presence on the Black Sea was dwarfed by Russia’s, but Kyiv managed to push back one of the world’s most powerful fleets.

Using exploding sea and aerial drones and missiles launched from land, Ukrainian forces have damaged or destroyed numerous Russian ships and forced others away from key areas in the sea.

In April 2022, Ukraine sank the flagship of Russia’s formidable Black Sea Fleet, the missile cruiser Moskva, using Ukrainian-made missiles. Since then, Ukraine has launched a number of devastating attacks on Russian ships, often using much cheaper drones.

“Ukraine doesn’t really have a navy,” Yaroslav Trofimov, a Ukrainian-Italian author, Middle East expert and chief foreign-affairs correspondent for the Wall Street Journal, told CBS News. Nonetheless, he said, Ukraine has “been able to prevent the Russian Black Sea Fleet from even entering the western half of the Black Sea.”

And Ukraine’s disruption of Russian activity has not stopped at its warships. According to U.N. data, Moscow’s grain exports fell by more than half at one point as its ports on the Black Sea were effectively shut down for months.

Ukraine did not take control of the Black Sea, but it made parts of it too dangerous for Russia to use.

President Trump has said repeatedly that Iran’s navy is “gone,” destroyed in the war, but  Iran appears to be taking a page right out of Ukraine’s playbook when it comes to the Strait of Hormuz.

Even before the current conflict, U.S. military officials had acknowledged what the war in the Persian Gulf has made painfully clear: In modern asymmetrical warfare, large, expensive ships can be big targets for cheap, unmanned weapons.

Or as Trofimov put it as he spoke with CBS News in his current home in Dubai, modern naval warfare is increasingly “dominated by unmanned systems.”

“Iran is learning lessons of the war in Ukraine very carefully,” said Trofimov, who covered the Ukraine war extensively.

Those systems includes small drones that can be difficult to intercept, digitally or with conventional weapons.

“They don’t have a huge warhead,” he said. “But it’s big enough to blind a ship.”

In past conflicts, including the “Tanker War” of 1987-88 when Iran laid sea mines to block traffic, the U.S. Navy escorted tankers through the Persian Gulf.

That might not work today.

“Physically going along with tankers is not really that useful if you’re dealing with drones,” Trofimov told CBS News. “A drone … is just a flying mine.”

The U.S. has not yet attempted to escort any ships through the Strait of Hormuz during the current conflict.

In the meantime, Iran has floated demands that would effectively give it full control over the strait — turning it into a private “toll booth” for the Islamic Republic regime, Trofimov said, something the U.S. and its Gulf allies are unlikely to accept.

The Black Sea and the Strait of Hormuz are very different bodies of water, but the pattern is starting to look familiar: A vastly outgunned power using cheap tools and asymmetric tactics to thwart and frustrate a much better-equipped adversary — and not even needing to win outright, but just raise the risk level of any movement in the war zone.

The U.S. and Israel say they’ve struck more than 20,000 Iranian targets since the war began. And in narrow military terms, Iran appears to be losing. But as the strait’s closure keeps global fuel prices elevated, it’s having a ripple effect, pushing up the cost of consumer goods around the world, and Iran appears to be winning economically.

Jamie Lee Curtis to Star in ‘Murder, She Wrote’ Film

0

One of the longest-running and most popular mystery series in the history of television is now going to become a mystery film.

Universal is making a Murder, She Wrote movie, which will star Jamie Lee Curtis as Jessica Fletcher, the mystery writer who becomes a sleuth in her hometown of Cabot Cove, Maine.

The film will be directed by Pitch Perfect’s Jason Moore. Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo wrote the film version’s script.

Murder, She Wrote, created by Peter S. Fischer, Richard Levinson and William Link, ran for a whopping 12 seasons on CBS, plus four TV films that aired intermittently in the years after the show’s conclusion. This will be the first feature-film for theaters, though. All of the previous episodes and TV movies starred Angela Lansbury as Jessica Fletcher. Lansbury was nominated for an Emmy for every season of the series, although she never won a single award for the show.

At its height, Murder, She Wrote was one of the most popular shows on television. In its second season, it was the #3 ranked series on the air. Reruns continue on in syndication and on free streaming services like Tubi to this day.

Murder, She Wrote became so beloved at this point, in fact, that it even inspired its own theme park attraction, the Murder, She Wrote Mystery Theatre at Universal Studios Florida. The stage-based show explained how television shows were post-produced. It closed in 1996.

Murder, She Wrote (the movie) is scheduled to open in theaters on Dec. 22, 2027.

Brazil vs. France: Where to watch online, live stream, start time

0

Neymar may not be in the Brazil squad for this international break, which will see the team face France and Croatia, but that doesn’t mean that players in the squad won’t have a lot to prove to Carlo Ancelotti. Bruno Guimaras’ injury is a major blow to the midfield, but it does provide Chelsea’s Andrey Santos with a chance to improve his own standing in the squad, but no matter what, Brazil will go as far as Raphinha and Vinicius Junior can take them.

All that said, this is the window of the striker. Brazil were at their best over the last decade with Roberto Firmino leading the line while dropping deep to create for his teammates, but with that era over, Ancelotti has called in three more traditional strikers to battle for the coveted number nine.

How to watch Brazil vs. France, odds

  • Date: Thursday, March 26 | Time: 4 p.m. ET
  • Location: Gillette Stadium — Foxborough, Massachusetts
  • TV: ESPN2 | Live stream: Fubo (Try for free)
  • Odds: Brazil +180; Draw +250; France

In a way, while Brazil may have more strikers in number than in years past, but none reach the quality that Firmino possesses. Igor Thiago, Joao Pedro, and Endrick have all been called in, and while they’re excelling with their sides, there are reasons to be concerned.

CBS Sports

Endrick trails behind the other two when it comes to counting stats, but he has the fewest minutes after moving to Lyon on loan during the winter transfer window. However, the 19-year-old has quickly shown why he is one of the most exciting talents in the world, and he’s the best creator of the trio.

Thiago is in the midst of a breakout season with Brentford, but six of his 19 Premier League goals have come from the penalty spot. Of course, a striker doesn’t score 13 goals by accident from open play, and if Ancelotti wants to go with more of a true number nine, the Brentford man has a strong case.

Joao Pedro has been a mix of the two, which makes sense as he’s spent some time at the 10 for Chelsea. Taking high-quality shots, he has been able to make the most of them, but it leaves Ancelotti with quite a decision. Here’s a look at their creative numbers, which are just as important in a team where wingers are king.

CBS Sports

While Joao Pedro and Thiago are rounding into their prime, Endrick also brings the factor of having the highest ceiling of the trio. Signed by Ancelotti at Real Madrid from Palmeiras, this isn’t the same 19-year-old who didn’t seem ready for life at the Santiago Bernabeu; he’s taking the chance for first-team minutes at Lyon and running with it. If he can shine during these qualifiers, the path is there to lead the line for Brazil, but he’ll have to beat out more experienced players to do so.

Brazil are a team that could fall in the round of 32 or win the whole thing, and it all comes down to how Ancelotti balances his squad. Big decisions will be in front of the manager ahead of this international break, and facing a tough opponent like France to kick things off will be a worthy test for these strikers.

France are one of the most balanced teams in the world, so to get by them, Ancelotti’s men will need to be at their best, as in their heads, the World Cup might as well be kicking off Thursday when they take the pitch in Foxborough.

NBA owners vote to explore Vegas, Seattle expansion bids

0

The NBA’s board of governors has approved a vote for the league to explore bids and applicants for expansion teams exclusively in Las Vegas and Seattle.

All 30 owners voted in favor of exploring Las Vegas and Seattle expansion, sources told ESPN. A bidding process is expected to generate offers in the $7-10 billion range for each team, according to sources.

Sources told ESPN last week that the league is targeting the 2028-29 season for the two expansion franchises to start playing.

The vote starts the NBA’s process of expanding to 32 teams. Multiple high-ranking officials have termed expansion as “when, not if.”

“Today’s vote reflects our Board’s interest in exploring potential expansion to Las Vegas and Seattle — two markets with a long history of support for NBA basketball,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement Wednesday. “We look forward to taking this next step and engaging with interested parties.”

Silver will hold a news conference later Wednesday to discuss next steps. The league said investment bank PJT Partners has been brought on “as a strategic adviser to evaluate prospective markets, ownership groups, arena infrastructure, and the broader economic implications of expansion.”

The league will examine Seattle and Las Vegas bids over the next several months, and whether to execute the new franchise purchases in 2026 or in a few years. There will be a potential final vote later this year to finalize the transactions to 32 teams. In both voting rounds, 23 of 30 governors must vote in favor.

A growing number of owners are believed to support expansion because of the long-term revenue growth for the league from the Las Vegas and Seattle markets.

The NHL had two of its recent expansions come in Las Vegas with the Golden Knights (2017) and Seattle with the Kraken (2021). In the NFL, the Raiders moved to Las Vegas in 2020, and Major League Baseball’s Athletics are in the process of doing the same for the 2028 season.

Las Vegas also has been home to the WNBA’s Aces since 2018. The Aces are three-time champions (2022, 2023, 2025) since the move.

Seattle has been without an NBA team since 2008, when the SuperSonics relocated to Oklahoma City and changed their name to the Thunder. The Sonics played in the NBA from 1967 through 2008 before leaving because of a dispute about the lease for KeyArena, which owner Clay Bennett said was outdated. The venue underwent extensive renovations from 2018 to 2021 and is now Climate Pledge Arena, where the Kraken and WNBA’s Storm play.

Over the past four years, franchise valuations have surged. Mat Ishbia purchased the Phoenix Suns in December 2022 for a then-record $4 billion valuation. In 2025, that record was topped multiple times: The Boston Celtics were sold to Bill Chisholm for a $6.1 billion valuation, then the Los Angeles Lakers went from the Buss family to Mark Walter for $10 billion, which remains the largest sum ever for a U.S. professional sports team. The Portland Trail Blazers also sold to Tom Dundon in August 2025 for $4.25 billion.

Executives across the NBA expect either the Minnesota Timberwolves or Memphis Grizzlies to move to the East to realign conferences with 16 each when Seattle and Las Vegas become West teams.

The NBA last expanded in 2004 with Charlotte.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
